For Argen Halasello the end of the war was only the beginning of the hardship. When the ghost of his past - the vile sorceress who ruined his military career - is placed in his city’s prison, he sees it as his chance for revenge. A duel to the death. That was what it was supposed to be. And yet neither died. Argen is spared by his mortal enemy, who has far more sadistic plans for him. Once a noble, he is now a prisoner’s slave. And her plaything.
Argen Halasello (MMC) gets his chance to witness the trial/execution of the powerful demoness that defeated him in battle and plagues his nightmares. Shivadra (FMC) is a cunning, ruthless siren that outwits Argen and he becomes her slave.
I don't know how dark I would consider the story, because it is actually a lot more light-hearted than it sounds. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the sharp banter between all of the characters, especially Argen and Shivadra. Argen is a sweet, naive, but noble to a fault man; none of that changes even when he's expected to serve his mortal enemy. I can understand why Shivadra loves playing with him so much.
I do think it could've been edited down in some parts where it dragged and the author has a habit of describing almost everything in a scene, things that didn't need to be included. These were only minor gripes for me as I loved the book.
I am grateful for the recommendation I had on this book, the story brings something new and creative, having some more "dark" elements, but still bringing something refreshing in terms of story for someone who is tired of reading more of the same.
Personally curious about the possibility of a sequel
“Flushed cheeks, tear-stained eyes begging for mercy, his perfect lips parted in a silent, wordless prayer, his teeth grit, his beautiful hair tousled, his face soft and fragile; defenseless.”
