What a wonderful balance to the series. Characters develop and change more deeply, there's even more humor and good times, and more vulgarity and social commentary, even briefly upon transsexuality and homosexuality. The sheer diversity is exquisite.

A friend of mine asked me where this series is going, and that's a valid question. Unity, I think is the simplest answer. Chaos rules this series. Tragedies abound. But I think it's really about family, coming together, what it means, and the love and hate, glory and horror that families go through. Wrapped up in an intergalactic war, populated with a large and crazy cast.

And seriously, as a father, that last chapter got to me.

Hazel is such a cute kid, and I love Squire finally coming into the story. Also Petrichor is amazing too. Really all of the characters are well done in this series, those are just some that I like even more.

Original review: Brilliant, amazing, stunning, and whatever else that Lady Gaga meme says.

Saga is one of the best graphic novels/comics being published currently, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

We pick up again with our heroes as they try their hand at living a normal life on the planet Gardenia, with Marco taking up stay-at-home-dad duties while Alana wins the bread as an actor in shitty tv shows on the Open Circuit. Oh and Hazel is a toddler!

The first part here is really great as we tightly focus on the relationship between Alana and Marco and it becomes a wonderful look at how doubts, trust and insecurity can strain a marriage even outside of the fact that the two are star-crossed lovers from enemy alien races. But just when the relationship is at it's lowest, the past catches up and the story is off again on an intergalactic adventure that's even more action-packed than before, involving new alliances, space heists, and a dangerous quest for dragon jizz.

It's once again addictive, imaginative, and exciting, with characters you care about, proving once again why it's considered one of the top comic series being published right now.

It's also available in separate volumes:
Saga, Vol. 4 ★★★★
Saga, Vol. 5 ★★★★★
Saga, Vol. 6 ★★★★★

Very nice edition with some extras at the end.

Volume 4, Chapters 19-24, 5 stars:

Excellent. This volume was really good. Lots of action, the plot had some great developments, I really liked it. A little darker, family life, drugs, the ending of the last chapter was a nice cliffhanger.

Volume 5, Chapters 25-30, 4 stars:

Lots of drugs, some sex, reflection on the bad things people do during war, redemption... Some people got reunited. Some didn’t. Some were healed, some weren‘t.
Let’s not forget the dragon „medicine“. Yuk. Right there is some imagery that I won’t get rid of soon. I need some mental bleach.
And holy cow, I had a Game of Thrones moment. Or two. Or three. They are certainly not pulling their punches.

Volume 6, Chapters 31-36, 4 stars:

Some of it spoilerish! You might want to read after the respective chapters...

Chapter 31: Pretty horrific, those kids with their sketches chronicling their suffering.
And what was that with the intersex dudette, that was totally arbitrary. Was that to set the scene for Hazel taking off her shirt later in the chapter?

Chapter 32: I love the first full-page sketch. The colours are great, I love their facial expressions and the reflection in his glasses.

Chapter 33: Our intrepid reporters are back. Mostly a filler chapter. Why is The Will overweight all of a sudden? How did that happen?

Chapter 34: Another lovely frontispiece, this time with Güs and Friendo.

This chapter I liked. Diverse characters, many changing POVs, the plot is starting to come together nicely.

Chapter 35: The plot thickens! The Will is pretty weird in this. And I really, really don‘t like his hallucination.

Chapter 36: Yuk! No! Awwwww! Phew, not dead. Eeep. Sniffle. Wingnut bitch? Ooops! Awwwwwww! Sigh!

Yep, that‘s my spoiler free summary of this chapter.

**************
Bottomline, this is some seriously good stuff. But that is kind of a given with something this successful, right?

Alana gets a job acting in a very popular, illegal soap opera broadcast to support her family, and Marco becomes a stay-at-home dad to take care of Hazel. Things go relatively well until a resentful robot who lost his child due to the Landfall vs. Reach war, loses his shit and kills Prince Robot the IV’s wife, kidnaps his newborn child, then tracks down Marco’s family to kidnap Hazel, taking Alana and Marco's Mom with them on the wooden Spaceship.

Marcus and Prince Robot team up to find the man who took both their children and get them back. Gwendolyn, Sophie, and The Brand (The Will’s sister) team up to find ingredients for a magical cure that could save the Will, which they do, but The Brand dies in the process. The kidnapper tries to hand Hazel over to the resistance, but they betray him, so he teams up with Alana and kills some of them, but the others escape, taking Hazel and Marco’s mom with them. Marco and Prince Robot catch up to Alana and the kidnapper, Prince Robot kills the kidnapper and takes his child, and Marco and Alana Reunite.

The will is healed, but pissed at Sophie and Gwendolyn for letting his sister die, so he cuts them off and goes hunting for Prince Robot, who killed his lover. Hazel and her grandma(Marco’s mom) are handed over to Landfall and kept in a detention facility where Hazel is schooled. After a few years of searching, Marcus and Alana finally find out that Hazel and her grandma are being kept in a Landfall detention facility, and enlist Prince Robot’s help to free them. Prince Robot leaves his now toddler-aged son with Ghus and helps them break Hazel out, but Marco’s mom decides to stay behind. The Will finds Prince Robot’s son, but then gives up on revenge after threatening the boy, and with Marco’s family finally reunited, they reveal Alana to be pregnant yet again.

Saga’s story is so expansive, and the world-building here is as intricate as it gets. Usually with books like that, things start to feel congested pretty fast, but Brian K. manages to still pace this book in a way that feels so fast that it’s a breeze to read. On top of that, it’s all here: lovable and relatable characters, an addictive and unpredictable story, flawless character development, and lots of action and drama. My only issue is the art style; it gets impressive at times, but looks kind of lazy for most of the book.

Saga: Book One : ★★★★½

⠀i'm not going to do a serious review like i did for the first one since... it's a graphic novel and not that much really changes. as noted above, i gave the first book four and a half stars, which rounded up to five stars. i really enjoyed book two, however, i didn't like the plot as much as i did for the first one. i couldn't bring myself to put this book on the same level as book one (hence the drop of half a star). i won't state why since it is kind of a spoiler. i will say that arguably the most important thing that happened made a difference for almost the entire book but it was "fixed" in the end. speaking of the end, boy did my mouth drop. i can't say i saw it coming since this is so fast-paced, but i wasn't really surprised. this will change probably everything... which might be why everyone says that Saga: Book Three is so heartbreaking. i started this in the last review and i will say it again: i really, really enjoy this but i still don't get the hype. it's very good and very intriguing but i feel like people think that this is the avengers: endgame of graphic novels and i just don't see that.

I want to say that I absolutely love Saga! I just recently finished reading the second Saga book (so a bunch of volumes put into one) and I really loved it (maybe even more than the first).

SPOILERS AHEAD

In this book of Saga, we pick up right where we last left our crew, in a lot of trouble (like always). Our main family is trying to live a normal life on a planet, hiding out from their hunters. However, what they do not know is the hunters are on kind of their own journeys at this point. (I really do not want to say a ton about the journeys they are because it may spoil major story points for people who have not read this series yet). As this book goes on Prince Robot experiences some series family trauma that sets him off on a new quest as well and forces him to team up with an unlikely crew to get what he needs. We also see Hazel grow up in this book and have her own plotline (which may have been my favorite, she is definitely in competition with Sophie’s storyline). I really love this series and I am sorry to be vague but I do not want to spoil anything, just go read these books! Pick up a volume and you will not regret it ever.

This book was five stars on Goodreads.

This is truly one of the best series for binge reading!

Honestly, I remember I didn't love the Fadeaway volume as much when I read it the first time. It still strikes me as just a bit "After School Special"-y because it seems to wrap up pretty quickly but I appreciate it more for what it showed about Marko. We get that Alana is more family oriented and it never really seemed like she was all that violent and war hungry before. With Marko, we know he took a vow against violence but we don't know exactly why. That arc shows why he was so adamant about staying away from violence. It's interesting that Marko learning to fight once more was, like Alana, due more to his family than any desire for violence.

This was the introduction of Miss Petrichor! I loved her! And Hazel was the cutest little bean! I love her so much!

This was the part where Prince Robot IV really started to grow on me, as well.

So far, I'm enjoying this re-read but I know the pain is coming... the part with Sophie always gets me.

Grrrrr!

Comics like this are the reason I love comics.

I'm always nervous about diving into a series that basically everyone says is one of the best the medium has ever produced, but Saga: Book One was amazing and unique and vibrant and rich with character and worldbuilding and more. And, somehow, Saga: Book Two is even better, I think? Or just as good? They're just so, so, so good. Some of the most organic, immersive storytelling on the market. Vaughan's script reads so naturally and his dialogue is so real, and Staples' art is just otherworldly good. The way she brings this wild universe to life is next-level, and she captures everything from facial expressions to action better than just about anyone else. And those covers! I would frame just about every single one of them on my wall in a heartbeat

This series is just amazing. I think Vaughan gets a little too carried away sometimes, especially with some of the sexual content on display. I'm all for sex in comics, and Saga does it better than most, thanks to Staples' beautiful and, when needed, appropriately sexy art. But some of it feels more comedic and juvenile in nature, and it's more distracting than anything. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But those moments are few compared to every other moment that delivers science-fantasy content on a level that continues to blow me away.

now is almost 3am, and in one day I read Saga Book One and Book Two, maybe I have no self-control and my uni work is suffering because of that, but I can’t help it because this story is so fucking good - it’s a perfect combination of action and character building, every main and side character is relevant for the ongoing story, everyone is morally gray, clever usage of sex scenes, amazing artwork, Hazel’s narration throughout the comic is one of my favorite parts, using literature (romance book!) for a criticism of political and social structure and as a device that brought Alana and Marko together, facts about fantasy world that don’t feel like info-dumping and boring, complex world with almost flawless exacution, queer characters, etc

also marko, alana, klara with tattoos??? dear authors thank you for blessing my eyes

Saga Book Two collects issues 19-36 of the Image Comics series written by Brian K. Vaughan and art by Fiona Staples.

After successfully escaping assassins sent by both of their home planets, Fiona and Marko are trying everything they can to raise their daughter as normally as possible. Fiona is working for The Open Circuit, a wrasslin/superhero soap opera series, while Marko is a stay-at-home dad. But things won't stay peaceful for long and our favorite family will be tested to the max.

I am continuing my reread of Saga in preparation of issue 55. If the first book is A New Hope, this book is The Empire Strikes Back. Our characters are split up, new alliances are made, new enemies are encountered, and there a lingering doom hovering above everyone. Fiona Staples has really hit her stride and every page is beautiful, but it's always something special when we get a full page spread. My favorite Saga character, Ghüs, is also featured heavily in this book which is a true treasure. The back of the book contains an art gallery featuring the works of many of BKV and Staple's comic friends and peers.

Not as compelling as the first omnibus, but only because the first one is pretty much all five-star issues. The plotting and character work is still there, as are the cliffhangers and banger opening scenes. It’s slightly off the rails and convoluted but gets back to it by the end.

It's somewhat difficult to review this book for others. If you've read the first giant volume, then you know whether you want to read this one. This is more of the same, and that's not a criticism as far as I'm concerned because I love this series.

My only criticism is that it needs more Ghüs. Yes, I know he gets plenty of screentime but he's just so awesome that I want to read a spinoff series that follows his adventures. Even if it's just looking after his heard on Quietus. He's the best.

Saga: Book Two contains chapters nineteen through thirty-six plus about 30 pages of additional content. The additional content is guest art and interviews with the guest artists.

This book took me a long time to read. Partly because I was purposely reading it slowly, partly because book two is darker and more uncomfortable than book one. Still excellent.

Someone needs to write A Nite Time Smoke by D. Oswald Heist. Something like what Philip José Farmer did with Venus on the Half-Shell by Kilgore Trout.

Man this story just keeps on kicking. Characters who may have seemed like a bad guy now have you caring what happens to to them. At no point can I predict what’s about to happen. So many twists and turns. I absolutely love Hazel. She is just so precious. I also like Ghüs. Such a cool character. But the reunion near the end damn near had me in tears. But the actual last panel then last page?!??? Can’t wait to start Book 3!!!
