Gabi Kincaid’s life goal is making sure kids know they're loved. So, when tragedy strikes her best friend, Gabi drops everything to help her and her three young children. Even though that means moving into the home of the man who teased her relentlessly when they were growing up---her best friend’s older brother.

Max “Baz” Bastian is living the dream as one of the top defensemen for the San Francisco Strikers. His days are filled with hockey, pranks, and friends. Until a call from his sister changes everything. Now that he’s convinced her to move in with him, he’ll help her any way he can---even if that means paying for a nanny who’s stubborn and serious to a fault.

Teasing Gabi was entertaining when they were kids, but it’s different now. Not that she sees him as anything more than an overgrown child. Or does she? Tension blossoms between them. Opposites attract. But falling for Max could mean losing her best friend---and the found family she’s always wanted. Can she let down her defenses to take a shot at love?

USA Today Bestselling Author, Stephanie Kay has always loved a good romance, and she got hooked on the dirty ones at the tender age of 14, when she told her mother that if the cover wasn’t a bodice ripper, then there was no sex in the book. As an avid mystery reader, her mother never checked to see if Stephanie was lying. Twenty plus years later, Stephanie’s most prized possession is her Kindle, and she may have a Hallmark movie obsession.

She has called California, Maryland, and Rhode Island her home, but now lives in New Hampshire with her husband where she asks him incessant questions until he escapes to go hiking in the mountains. That’s the only time she can get him out of the house so she can get her writing in. Married couples shouldn’t both work from home!

Sports were never her thing, but after beta reading for another hockey author and buying NHL Game Center within one month of watching her first hockey game a few years ago, she dove into learning everything she could about the sport and the hot men that play it. Now she spends her spare time visiting hockey arenas in the name of research and loving every second of it.

*ARC received from author in exchange for my honest review. *

Max “Baz” Bastian is living his best life. He loves his job as defensemen for the San Francisco Strikers, he has great friends and a wonderful family. When he gets an unexpected call from his sister that her husband has passed away Max's life is about to get a whole new facelift. It took a lot of years for him to realize that his family is the most important thing to him and now that he has realized that nothing stops him from inviting his sister and her three kids to move in with him. Having a big house can get lonely and this way he will be able to be there for his sister and his home won't seem so lonely when he is home. Along with his sister and her kids comes a live-in nanny but when that nanny turns out to be his sister's best friend Gabi, things just might have gotten more interesting.

Gabi would do anything for her best friend including moving into a house with her and her brother. Max has always been the prankster that got under her skin since the moment that they met and now twenty years later things seem like that they haven't changed one bit. Gabi just wants to do her job as the kids’ nanny and her best friend out through the grief of losing her husband but what she never anticipated were these feelings for Max. He is still that annoying prankster but now there is so much more she never realized. Even if she was having those feelings, she can't exactly pursue a relationship with him since he is paying her salary.

Max & Gabi's playful banter starts to turn into subtle flirts and then not so subtle flirts and before either of them know what is happening feelings are involved and both are grasping at what could possibly be something real. Max has his goals set to win the cup this year and Gabi is just wanting to help her friend but as feelings turn to love can Gabi shut out the outside world long enough to realize that what her and Max have could be the forever kind of love?

Defensive Zone book 8 in the San Francisco Strikers was my first Stephanie Kay book and I am thoroughly impressed. It takes a lot for a sports romance to really capture and hold my attention because generally the players are a bit too egotistical for my taste but not this one. Stephanie made Max seem so relatable from the very first page. Yes, he was very hot, but he was also just a guy who loved playing hockey and got paid loads of money to do it. When an author can make a hero seem relatable it really amps the story up that much more for me.

4.5 rounded up to 5 stars for Max & Gabi in Defensive Zone. This won't be my last Stephanie Kay book, but I am glad that it was my first. If you are looking for a book that will give you all the happy and sexy feels then this book is for you!

A must read hockey romance. If you love the famous “best friends brother” trope plus hockey this is the book for you. This book is part of a huge hockey book series, but can be read as a standalone.

Defensive Zone was fun and overall an easy read. If you want to reach that goodreads goal, this book will help you meet it. The only thing I was a little mad about was the whole split second of miscommunication. At the same time, I understood her feelings and why ‘it’ happened. But other than that, I loved this one.

I can’t wait to binge the whole series! Thank you @ author for writing this!

Defensive Zone
Max (Baz) and Gabi, enemies to lovers/best friends brother.
Book 8 in the series.
I’ve loved Baz since the first book. I was a bit worried about a book where he was the main character. Sometimes when you take that comic relief character and give them their own book, it’s too much. Too over the top. But being in Baz’s world was actually refreshing. He was surprisingly low key at home. He’s smart, loves his family and is loyal to his team. He really steps up when his sisters world falls apart. Moving her and her three children into his home. Giving her everything she needs. Including a nanny. His sisters best friend. The best friend who has hated him since she was six.
Luckily Gabi was between nanny jobs when her best friend called needing help after the sudden death of her husband. She’ll do anything for her bestie. Even living with that overgrown child she calls brother. Gabi has never liked Max. He’s childish, makes everything a joke. Doesn’t seem to have a serious thought in his head. She’s just waiting for the pranks to start.
These two really don’t get along. But they can’t deny the attraction they have for each other. When they get out of their own heads, and throw away the preconceptions, they got along really, really well.
I loved Baz. He was funny, extremely smart, and focused. He was so good with the kids.
Gabi I struggled with a bit. She was so hyper focused on the “old Max” she refused to see, or to admit that he’s a good guy. She keeps their relationship a secret. Sneaking in and out of his room. And letting others opinions sway her feelings. I got tired of her real quick.
After 8 books. I was hoping to start to see some closure with these couples. Yes they are all still together, but up until this book, there was only one engagement (two after this book). I wanted to see those happy ever afters.
Was this the last book? Not sure, but we are leaving San Francisco and heading to Houston, for a new team and a new series.
It’s told in dual points of view, no cheating and they are happy and together in the end.

This is my first read by the author and even though it’s book 8 in the series, I didn’t have any problem jumping right in! Since I enjoyed this book, I do want to go back and read the others since they involve the teammates mentioned in this book.

This is a best friend’s brother, boss/employee, and opposites attracted romance, and boy are they about as opposite as two people could be! Max is a fun loving prankster who doesn’t take much seriously while Gabi is very serious with very little sense of humor. While I loved Max, I didn’t really like Gabi until sometime after the middle of the book. She just didn’t seem right for him, and even gets upset that he fought one time in a hockey game (it’s part of the game)! Eventually we see them bring out the best in each other; Gabi learns to loosen up a bit and have some fun, while Max takes some thing a little more seriously.

This book is low on angst (most of the angst involves Max’s sister/Gabi’s best friend) with a lot of steam and some laugh out loud moments and a HEA. Best of all, hockey fans will love that The Defensive Zone is a romance that includes a lot of details of hockey from Max’s team’s Stanley Cup run!

Oh, I’m so glad that Max got his own story! I’ve loved his antics since the first Strikers book. And pairing him with Gabi, his sister’s best friend, who he’s known since childhood, made it even better. The banter between these two is priceless and adds so much delicious decadence to their ultimate shift from friends to lovers.
I always say secondary characters can make or break a story, and all of Max’s teammates add such wonderful flavor to the book. And they get a chance to razz him just like he did to each of them in their own stories. The addition of Max’s nieces and nephew shows that he’s not always the jokester he presents himself as. I would have liked a little bit more about Ava, although I adored her bond with both bff Gabi and her big brother.
All around fantastic story with deserves more than five stars! If you haven’t started the Striker series yet, Defensive Zone can definitely be read as a stand-alone. But I’m pretty certain you’ll go back to devour the rest of the series soon after!

Max aka "Baz" to his team mates is the known prankster of the Strikers hockey team, so I was very curious to see how his story would go as he's always been such a fun side character in previous books and it didn't disappoint!!

His sister, Ava, is suddenly widowed with 3 young children, so he offers to help them out by giving them time to grieve at his home in San Francisco. To help his sister out, he agrees to pay for a nanny to help with the kids. Ava chooses Gabi, her best friend since childhood and someone Max has always loved to prank, because she is rather serious in nature. Naturally, Gabi is reticent to get involved with Max, because he is the brother of her best friend and technically her boss. What happens when these opposite personalities attract? Sparks completely fly and combust and all kinds of sexy times ensue!

Having read all of the books in this series, I think it's become my favorite book! All of the books in the series can be read as stand-alone, but I highly recommend them all.

When Gabi Kincaid's best friend suffers a tragedy in her life she drops everything to be there to help her and be a nanny to her 3 young kids . Even when that means she has to move into Max "Baz" Bastian's house, the home of her bestie's brother who is a professional hockey player for the San Francisco Strikers. Max who loves hockey is the biggest prankster on the team, also to his friends and Gabi is no exception but it's not the same as it was when they were kids.
There's a lot of tension along with attraction between Gabi and Max but will this cause trouble and will she lose her best friend? Is Max even ready for a relationship? Is Gabi?

I enjoyed the story, some heartache but also lots of laughs.

I have been waiting for Baz’s story and this book didn’t disappoint!

Max, the eternal prankster, invites his little sister to move in with him with her 3 kids after her husband’s death. And with her comes her best friend Gabi, the nanny - who Max has tormented her entire life with his endless pranks!

What happens when your nemesis turns out to be not what you expect? And you find yourself falling in love with his alter ego? And realize maybe he was just what you always needed?

Max and Gabi’s story is great! Sometimes sexy and sometimes funny - and best of all we get to catch up with the rest of the Strikers and their WAGS.

I hate to see this series end but look forward to the meeting the players of the new expansion team in Houston!

Prank Sinatra also know as Max or Baz has found his other half. This is a great love story of opposites attracts, almost enemies to lovers. Max is the jokester of his hockey team and it spills over to his family. Gabi is a serious by-the-rules girl. Gabi is his sister's, Ava, best friend so they have known each other most of their lives but were like oil and water. They all end up at Max's home after Ava's husband dies, leaving her with a baby and 4-year-old twins. Gabi moves in to help. The attraction dance begins with some drama but a great outcome. I really enjoyed the visit with old friends from the previous books in this series. The great thing about Stephanie Kay's books is there is actual hockey being played and she puts the reader right there behind the glass. Great Book!

I am a sucker for a man bun and a beard and Max Bastian (Baz) delivers both. This was a fun read with well written characters. The banter between Gabi and Baz really added to the romantic tension and the love hate thing Gabi has going for Max made their chemistry even hotter-hello laundry room! At times I wanted to give Gabi a good shake and remind her that her position as a “nanny” in her current situation was different and less traditional and she just need to get past that and give Baz a chance. In the end she does keep him on his toes and turnabout is fair play in love and pranking and I loved seeing Baz go down.I have enjoyed the books I have read in the San Francisco Strikers series thus far and will probably go back and catch a couple I the middle that I missed.

So many tropes in this book that are like little beacons of light that draw me in. I knew I had to get my hands on this story but what I didn't anticipate quite so much was the roller coaster of emotions Max (Baz) & Gabi's story took me through.
The heart breaking way these two come to be in each others lives again had me fighting back tears, but as the story goes on and Max & Gabi's relationship changes it was honestly a beautiful thing to read.
I am a hard core sports romance fan, and hockey is my absolute favourite sport to read in this genre. Stephanie is a pro with this sport but above all else she is a damn good storyteller. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book

This the eight book in the SanFrancisco Strikers series and the story revolves on Baz. I love sports/Hockey stories and this book made the top of the list. We meet the heroine of this book Gabi who is best friends with Baz’s sister and comes to help Ava as a Nanny when there is a tragedy in the family. This book had it all emotional, fun, witty jokes and sexy. It had a nice flow to the story and a good story line. Thoroughly enjoyed the book, loved both characters and saw some of the previous characters from the other books making an appearance. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a wonderful sports stand alone book

PrankSinatra & his match 😁

Baz (Max) has been pranking his teammates and family for years. Gabi (his sisters BFF) has hated him since she was 6. Well opposites attract and both soon realize that there is more to eachother than pranks and stoicism. Gabi & Max are combustible in the 🔥🔥🔥s ways. Max has a heart of Gold and I loved that he got his HEA.
Sad to see this being the final Striker book but it was totally worth the wait. Loved this series and am excited for the next one based in Houston. Could Dom be next 🤔...
I received a ARC for my honest opinion.

I was lucky enough to read an ARC of Defensive Zone. This book is funny, sweet and tugs at your heart strings. Max is funny to Gabi's serious. When tragedy brings them together to support his sister, there was no stopping the fireworks. They haven't seen each other in years but once they do there is no stopping them. I love Max's antics! He's the prankster who loves with his whole soul. I loved it!

O Baz! I absolutely loved this book. When Stephanie mentioned that the next book of the Strikers was going to be about Baz, I had no idea what to expect but boy did she deliver! I’m so happy I stumbled upon Stephanie’s San Francisco Strikers Series. I have read other hockey romance novels but none of them have actual lingo and good commentary of the game. She is definitely a fan of hockey. Cannot wait to see what she does next!

Loved this series, this book, and these characters. The story started in the first sentence and I love how again and Max came together. The history they had, the banter, and the sexual tension made it all come together so well. I giggled a few times and I tried to picture these two together, sneaking around, trying to behave but being so drawn to each other.
Love the way this author creates such vivid situations it feels like you’re right there with them, good and bad.

4.5 stars and my favorite male lead. Best friend's brother romance and a bit of enemies to lovers but not completely. We see a completely different side of Baz from the other books in this series and in a good way; doting uncle, caring brother, and sexy beast. This could have been 5 stars but Gabi was a bit off putting for a good part of this book, had she been softened up a bit sooner I would have enjoyed the romance more.

This book was fabulous! Baz has always been my favorite fun Striker and it was terrific watching him finally get taken down by the love of a good woman. Watching the jokester of the team get things turned around on him was perfect. This book has romance, steam, comedy and a little tension. Max and Gabi will soon be a favorite of yours too.

Defensive Zone was such a fun and heartwarming book. I absolutely love and adore Max. I love how relatable he was especially for a hockey player because sometimes they come off as being douchebags but Max was definitely the opposite. The banter between Gabi and Max had me laughing out loud so many times. I was rooting for these two from the beginning especially with that chemistry.

I have to give some props to Gabi she held out on Baz longer than I expected! Their banter made the book so much fun. Max and Gabi are the perfect opposites for each other. So much sexual tension in it! Delicious! Another amazing read by Stephanie Kay! And oh my gosh such a “hoppy” ending!
