Us
¿Qué pasa cuando la vida que tenías asumida da un giro de 180 grados? Nada... Y también todo. Us es la historia de amor de Sara y Diana, y también la historia de la transición de género de Diana. Tras los primeros miedos de que ese repentino giro en su relación acabara con ella, se dan cuenta de que se siguen gustando y queriendo, y que nada ha cambiado entre ellas. Ahora, tendrán que salir del armario y enfrentarse a la mirada de su entorno familiar y social.
El origen de Us es un fanzine que publicó Sara Soler en 2019 para contar el proceso de transición de su pareja. Tras cuatro reimpresiones del fanzine, Sara decide hacerlo crecer y convertirlo en una novela gráfica que relata cómo afrontaron ese proceso juntas, con un compendio de anécdotas reveladoras: la difícil confesión de Diana, la reacción de sus abuelas, la primera vez que se atrevieron a hacer pis en un baño público de chicas o cómo Diana ha descubierto lo que es el mansplaining.

Sara’s longterm relationship takes a turn in her adorable and informative graphic memoir, Us, when Diana breaks some big news to her. After a lifetime of trying to understand themselves, Diana has realized she is a trans woman and is ready to make the transition but is nervous how Sara will treat her as well as all the social elements that will inevitably come into play. This is a really tender and touching look at Diana’s transition as well as Sara’s journey to realizing she is bisexual, all told through Sara Soler’s cute illustrations and translated into english by Siliva Perea Labayen (Sara and Diana are from Spain). The memoir proceeds with a bubbly and boisterous energy that makes it fast-paced, humorous and very accessible while still productively covering big ideas. From social stigmas and harassment (Sara points out how misuderstandings and disinformation have allowed people to ‘opt harmful attitudes’ that can be very hurtful and dangerous) to the discomforts around how to present oneself and the oppressive weight of social gender roles, Us covers a lot of topics through the story of Sara and Diana’s relationship and experience. It is careful to make room for many different kinds of experiences as well, discussing the topics in the way they related to them but showing that everyone is unique and may have different experiences. ‘There are as many experiences as there are trans people in the world. Each person chooses their own path.’ This is a really lovely graphic memoir and truly shows how much love and support goes a long way.
’You’re not alone’ is one of the most important messages in this book.
This story covers several years and does well by showing how coming to terms and transitioning can be a big process. When Diana first brings it up it is a full two years before she is ready to make any changes and the opening of this book dives into a lot of anxieties that can keep people trapped in their own silence and afraid to be themselves. What makes Us really work is how effectively it juggles a lot of big concepts on the intersections along the spectrum of gender and sexuality. It is a good look at how society comes into play as well. For example, Diana notes how finally seeing positive trans representation in media was a big opening for her to finally start addressing what she was feeling inside and Sara discusses how the stereotypes of trans people and usually only being seen as villains or murder victims can be really harmful. Especially in a demographic that has an alarmingly high suicide rate and rate of being victims to violence. Having positive representation isn’t the only thing though, and having the support of loved ones and space to accept yourself positively have shown to be a huge mental health benefit for lgbtq+ people of all varieties. I really appreciate how this book never deadnames or misgenders Diana, even in the scenes before her transition, which shows that it is actually not that difficult to get that correct if you try. And earnestly trying is what is often most important. Through Sara’s journey the book also discusses the stigmas against bisexual people (like myself), which I appreciated being threaded in for a larger scope of discussion on these topics.
Perhaps the biggest topic discusses is gender roles and how socially enforced stereotypes around gender can be harmful to everyone. Things like “boys don’t cry” or “girls should be delicate”, for instance, are shown as harmful and how beliefs on how someone of a gender should act are increasingly oppressive if that just isn’t who you are. There are also a lot of interesting looks at how, once she presents as a woman, Diana begins to experience the harassment and misogyny faced by women and it is really eye opening for her. Something I found this book does well is offer information and ideas in a way that reach a large audience and how it applies to them. It’s just a well done book but through all of it, the most important thing we learn about Diana and Sara is:
”We’re happy!”
I really enjoyed Us by Sara Soler and I feel this is an important book that many can get a lot out of as well as just enjoy the couple’s really loving relationship and openness about their experiences. Us is fun, funny and quite effectively done while being very heartfelt.

A great graphic memoir about Sara's relationship with her partner Diana as they both discover more about their gender identities and sexual orientations. I loveeee that this graphic novel focused on utilizing the colors pink, blue, and white as they are the colors of the trans flag. Us is also extremely informative about the bi and trans experience and how it specifically impacted their relationship with each other and others in their families and communities. It was a quick read, but one that I would readily recommend.

‘Us’ ha venido para recordarnos que no todas las vidas son iguales y que esa diferencia no solo es digna de respeto (¡qué menos!) sino que merece ser celebrada y visibilizada. Porque el camino de la felicidad no es siempre una línea recta para todo el mundo y son, precisamente, las personas que más obstáculos encuentran quienes más merecen nuestro cariño y comprensión.
Este cómic cuenta la historia del viaje de dos personas: desde que se presentaban ante el mundo como una pareja cisheterosexual hasta que, tras un proceso largo y difícil, abrazan su nueva realidad y empiezan a vivir su vida como una chica trans y una chica bi. Es una historia autobiográfica que tiene el enorme mérito de contar de forma muy divertida un proceso muy complejo. Y el humor no es su única fortaleza: Sara Soler aborda en este libro asuntos complejos y de importante calado social de una manera tan clara y tan pedagógica que si alguien no los entiende y los acepta es porque ha tomado la férrea decisión de enrocarse en su cerrazón.
‘Us’ es un documento valiente en primera persona que aborda sin pudor asuntos difíciles (la salida del armario trans ante la familia, la disforia, la autopercepción, los miedos en el día a día, los estereotipos de género…) y lo hace desde la generosidad, la simpatía y la honestidad, sin pintarlo todo de rosa ni eludir las dudas, problemas y roces que una circunstancia como esta pueda generar en una relación. Sara Soler se merece sobradamente todo el reconocimiento que su libro está teniendo. Y Diana y ella se merecen, también sobradamente, toda la felicidad del mundo.

i’ve read a few trans memoirs now but this was the first when the individual started transitioning while originally being in a cishet relationship. this was also sara’s discovery of her bi and demisexuality as a cis woman, so it was very enlightening to see the contrast of the two experiences, as well as how they navigated their relationship.

“Us” es de esos libros que se debería leer en todos los sitios, especialmente en entornos educativos, y no solo por su evidente toque didáctico, sino porque consigue acercar de una manera amena y divertida conceptos y realidades que, lamentablemente, a día de hoy mucha gente sigue sin entender, algunos por atraso y falta de voluntad, pero otros simplemente por falta de conocimiento, y es ahí donde “Us” puede hacer mucho bien.
Con un tono jocoso y sencillo, siempre hablando al lector de tú a tú, Sara y Diana nos cuentan su vida y la transición por la que ambas han pasado en los últimos años. Sara y Diana llevan muchos años de relación, y un día la confesión de Diana, convierte todo en un revoltijo de dudas, de incertidumbre. Pero también lo convierte en una oportunidad de aprender, de educarse, de ser un poquito más consciente del mundo que les rodea. Diana es una mujer y pese al caos inicial nada ha cambiado, el amor sigue estando ahí.
Es bonito, es tierno, es duro, es divertido, y, sobre todo, hay tanto gusto y acierto a la hora de contar y mostrar tanto lo bueno como lo malo, que es imposible no conectar rápidamente con la historia de sus protagonistas y cogerles cariño. No solo me ha gustado el dibujo, que lo ha hecho y mucho, sino que la elección de los colores que ha usado su autora para dar color a sus imágenes me ha parecido maravillosa. Aumenta esa sensación de calidez que constantemente la obra te hace sentir. Una obra muy necesaria. Mucho.

Bueno. Y aquí estoy yo para dar la opinión impopular.
Normalmente, cuando hago reseñas en GR las escribo a vuelapluma y en el idioma en el que leí el libro, es mi única norma. Esta vez no lo he hecho así y me pregunto por qué es (jaja. No. Es broma. Sé por qué es). Pensé en dejarlo pasar y quedarme con lo bueno del cómic pero después de dormir sobre ello, he decidido que no, que por qué, que yo también tengo mi voz y mi opinión.
Vale ¿por dónde empiezo?
Por lo bueno, claro: Me parece un buen comienzo empezar el libro dejando atrás estereotipos. Efectivamente, un niño puede jugar con muñecas y una niña al fútbol o al escalestrix y es genial. Todas las criaturas deberían crecer libres de estereotipos. Ya sé que es difícil pero soñar es gratis.
Está bien que recalque que cada persona tiene su experiencia personal porque tú y yo, querido ser que me lee, tenemos una experiencia distinta de este mundo que habitamos.
Además los dibujos me parecieron monos y la historia está contada de forma graciosa.
Y ahora lo malo e impopular:
Me disgustó la falta de reflexión. O sea, Diana se da cuenta de que es una chica ¡¿viendo una serie?! ¡¿Y ya está?! ¡No le da por leer fuera de internet! ¡Aprende en reddit (y se traumatiza, obvio, mira que investigar donde los incels y los fachas campan a sus anchas...)! Hay muchas referencias a la cultura popular, series, pelis... y ni por un momento se plantean POR QUÉ de repente nos bombardean con este tema *saca su gorro de papel de plata* ¿no os preguntáis quién gana dinero con esto?
Luego está el tema de los estereotipos: primero nos dice que no, que caca. Y yo no puedo estar más de acuerdo, y luego lo primero que hace es maquillaje, pelu (sort of) y ropa. A ver si nos aclaramos. ¿Estereotipos sí o no? ¿Qué es ser mujer? No me queda claro y mira que nací siéndolo. Ojo. Yo creo que puedes vestirte como quieras o expresarte como quieras, de hecho creo es que sanísimo y liberador hacerlo. Igual es que ya tengo una edad (en la que te compras vaqueros en la sección masculina PORQUE TIENEN BOLSILLOS. Y no creo que eso me convierta en nadie que no sea yo).
Otra cosa que me pareció chunguísima, de hecho es una cosa que me horrorizó, es que se compare el uso de hormonas con el de ibuprofenos. A ver, muchachas. No. Las hormonas NO SON SUGUS (ni el ibuprofeno). Igual es porque nunca se han leído un prospecto de anticonceptivas (que también son hormonas) y no saben que muchas mujeres no las toleramos sin efectos secundarios chungos (que van de trombos a depresión, quistes ováricos, alteraciones en el ciclo...). Con esto no digo que no sean un tratamiento para algunas personas pero SERIEDAD, señoras. ¿Acaso saben sus efectos a largo plazo? Yo le daría unas décadas de recorrido antes de defender su uso indiscriminado.
Por algún motivo, esta historia me ha traído una frase a la cabeza: "cambiemos todo para que no cambie nada". Creo que es porque una de las protagonistas cambia a la fuerza para no perder a la otra, me ha dejado triste, la verdad.
Hay más cosicas, pero son menos importantes.
Pd. Cuando yo veía Ranma pensaba que era superguay poder encender y apagar el interruptor de chica o chico. Supongo que la lección que saqué fue diferente a que sacaron las protas del cómic.
También os propongo reflexionar sobre por qué mientras Ranma se pasa la vida en tetas, ninguna de las chicas con las que comparte su vida lo hacen (vamos yo no recuerdo ni a Akane, Kasumi, Nabiki, Shampoo o Kodachi por citar algunas...)
Lo revisaré porque creo que me dejo cosas.

C'était si émouvant ! Révoltant et très beau à la fois, un roman graphique qui raconte l'expérience de deux femmes face aux questionnements de genres, face au regard de la société et au poids de la transphobie / biphobie. Un ouvrage important en pus d'être très beau (autant dans le sujet que graphiquement).

November 13, 2023I originally heard about Us before it was translated and so desperately wanted to read it, because there's not enough representation of relationships between cis and trans women and I wanted to get my hands on every little bit I could find. Still do.
Two years of wanting to read it later, I found it a bit... after-school special? Don't get me wrong. I do think that we need coming out stories, and this is one that's informative and cute and does a thorough job of explaining that this is only one transition story, all are different and all are valid. It depicts both the hardships and the joys of the changes in Sara and Diana's lives, both as individuals and as girlfriends. And with the exception of a couple of well-meaning but unexamined "welcome to womanhood" sorts of statements that would piss off some trans women I know, I think it's generally free of missteps.
I guess that it just didn't feel like the most hard-hitting book for me at this point in my life because I've been the cis girlfriend rooting on a trans partner early in her transition (albeit a cis girlfriend who had already come to terms with her lesbianism and thus didn't have some of the same struggles as Sara). It kinda felt like old news to me.
However, I can see how Us would make others feel seen in a powerful way, and it did bring up some emotional memories for me. People who need a transition story for either education or moral support could do worse than this for sure.
As an added bonus, there is also a cute black cat!

Regal de Sant Jordi de la mama i el papa. Diu la mama "està fet per l'An i tu". Una mica sí, o això sentíem mentre no paràvem de plorar quan el llegíem. Llàgrimes grosses de poder-nos abraçar en aquest procés, del que hem rigut i plorat, i de tota la felicitat que hem compartit i compartim. No hem dubtat en escollir-nos, i cada dia flipo amb el que m'ha tocat amb aquesta sort.

La obra "Us", por Sara Soler, es una novela gráfica auto (y hetero) biográfica acerca de la historia de la dibujante y su pareja, Diana, que después de siete años de relación se da cuenta de que es una mujer trans*…, y de lo que ello puede conllevar de cara a estar con Sara. Una vez Diana logra empezar con su transición, comienza a afrontar toda una serie de situaciones cotidianas en las que la disforia de género, la misoginia y la transfobia son el plato principal.
Esta es una novela gráfica a medio camino entre la divulgación y la revelación personal, que funciona a las mil maravillas en ambos ámbitos. A través de la historia de Diana y la suya propia, Sara muestra muchas realidades de las que las personas no LGBTQIA+, y muchas personas queer que no pertenecen a los colectivos más vulnerables de la comunidad (en especial, los colectivos trans*, bi, y aroace), no son conscientes. Diana duda de si realmente "merece la pena" vivir su género si con ello pierde a la mujer de la que está enamorada; Sara afronta una crisis respecto a su sexualidad; una vez deciden seguir adelante con todo lo que ello implica, las dos tienen que lidiar con actitudes y comentarios homófobos, tránsfobos, y bífobos… La vida no es un camino de rosas, y eso queda reflejado en esta novela.
Pero igual de importante que denunciar lo malo es resaltar lo bueno, y "Us" también hace mucho hincapié en los momentos de euforia de género que vive Diana. Lejos de hacer ver que las personas trans* solo pasan penurias, esta obra se asegura de ofrecer una perspectiva equilibrada en la que se ven rayitos de esperanza en forma de personas que sí aceptan, de momentos que sí se sienten bien, y de amores que sí se quedan.
La obra está tintada de azul, rosa y blanco, los colores de la bandera trans*, y me resultó un detalle tan ingenioso como tierno. También me encantó que Diana, desde el primer momento, tuviese una paleta rosa; y que, si bien se está hablando del proceso de transición, en ningún momento haya deadnaming o misgendering más que por parte del personaje tránsfobo genérico. No se olvida de cómo impacta todo esto a Sara, que está viviendo además su propio proceso de aceptación de su identidad queer y de lucha contra los comentarios que ella también recibe por estar saliendo con una mujer, que además es trans*; pero ni una ni otra hablan más alto, sino que se ofrece una perspectiva equilibrada y complementaria de las dos cosas. Asimismo hay claros tintes feministas, que falta hacen, y se explora cómo la transmisoginia es particularmente perversa.
Me gustó mucho, también, cómo Diana pudo explorar en paz su feminidad. Creo que una de las cosas más graves que se vende desde algunos sectores del feminismo es que las mujeres que no rechazan lo tradicionalmente femenino, sino que lo abrazan, no están rompiendo los estereotipos sexistas y son, por tanto, cómplices. Esto no es así en absoluto, y me gusta que en esta obra se deje claro. (He visto quejas al respecto en otras reseñas, y uf de verdad)
En general, creo que es una obra muy importante de cara a visibilizar la realidad de muchas personas trans* como Diana, narrando su experiencia sin hablar por encima de ella. Totalmente recomendada, y qué ganas de que Sara saque algo más pronto.

No recordo haver plorat mai tant amb un llibre o còmic. Ahir el vam llegir del tiron amb la Paula fent parades per plorar, abraçar-nos i recordar el camí de l'últim any i mig. És una història d'amor sàfic entre una noia cis i una noia trans que transiciona enmig de la relació. Està narrat amb tendresa, cura i una gran capacitat pedagògica. Espero que totis lis transfems sàfiques i les seves parelles llegiu juntis aquest còmic i espero que tingueu la sort que he tingut jo d'haver fet el camí amb la Paula.

I like the art that is inside the book much more than the art on the cover, and although they are both drawn by the author, it’s a weird choice to have the art style be so different on the front of the book. I didn’t pick this up for a long time because of the cover art. I was put off by very sudden changes in which was narrating the story: sometimes the perspective would shift from the author to her partner in the middle of a panel, with no indication that the other character has taken the narrative reins. This is likely an issue with the translation, but it happened a lot.

I think I continuously, lightly cried throughout this entire book. So sweet and a wonderful discussion of one experience of transness. Or for a relationship to “become” queer.

Really a cute story while also showing the daily problems of transitioning, wether it’s transphobia or simply finding clothes that fits you correctly. You have both perspectives of each partners throughout the comic which I thought was a great idea.

I really enjoyed this memoir in graphic novel form! Loved hearing the love story of the author and her wife.
Heads up that this book does include some very basic education about what being trans means, so if you’re already familiar with terms like cis, trans, dysphoria, etc. you might find those parts a little simple. On the other hand, if you aren’t familiar with those terms, you will still understand the book because it explains them.
This was a quick read that made me happy and I highly recommend it!

This is a fantastic and wonderful graphic memoir about Sara Soler and her partner Diana, following their journey after Diana comes out as trans. It's a successful blend of personal and informative, giving a strong emotional heart to the more informative sections.
The art is very cute, and very much NOT like the cover. Sara's artwork is much more stylized, in cute comic form that is round and bouncy and dynamic. The color palette is also great, using only the trans flag colors to bring everything to life, and it works.
I much preferred the personal story of Sara and Diana's relationship to the mini lectures, mostly because I'm already aware of the explanations and ideas being brought up in them. However, this is written in Spanish by a Spanish native, and I have no idea what transgender life is like in Spain - it may be the case that the simple lecture style married with the personal memoir style is exactly what some people may need to understand the broader picture, or to empathize more deeply.
Overall, this is a fun and emotional and lovely graphic novel. It's a great memoir of a relationship, it's educational, and I think would work for any age group from young teen and up.

Esta historia no se merece menos de 5 estrellas. Es espectacular la forma que tiene Sara de contar lo que fue y es su historia con Diana, me llegó profundamente al corazón. Se sintió increíblemente cercano y real y no solo por ser una autobiografía. Recomiendo esta obra a todo el mundo, me parece muy necesaria y aparte es divertida porque tiene mucho humor, qué más quieren

Si queréis saber más acerca de la experiencia trans, este es vuestro libro. Que absoluta maravilla, estoy en shock. El cariño, el cuidado, la paciencia, el amor que desprende esta novela gráfica es abrumador. Igual de abrumador que todas las situaciones horribles que ha tenido que vivir Diana en su transición. 😞 Me pone tan feliz pensar que ahora mismo vive como su verdadero yo :(( no sé, hay algo en las historias de personas lgtb que, como chico gay, me hace conectar muchísimo y siempre me siento como con ganas de apoyarles y que todo les salga bien 🥹

Estoy entre un 4 y un 5, pero le voy a poner el 5 porque creo que es de esos libros que todo el mundo debería leer porque trata un tema importante y necesario y creo que lo hace de una forma genial, cercana y explicando todo en profundidad pero de manera sencilla.

un cómic que plasma a realidade da autora, sara, e a súa moza, diana, unha muller trans, ao longo de todo o seu proceso de transición. gustoume moito a perspectiva coa que se trata o tema, moi autobiográfica e, ao tempo, algo didáctica tamén, plasmando os episodios máis bonitos e tamén os máis duros que enfrontaron no camiño. ademais, pareceume súper chulo e simbólico que só se usen tres cores no cómic: as do colectivo trans. en xeral, pareceume cukísimo e desfrutei moito de lelo <3

The translation work here really is very good.
I spent most of the book thinking it was set in Portland, OR.
It reminds me a lot of the work of Erika Moen and other queer cartoonists like her - in illustration style, in color work approach, in narrative voice, in subject matter.
I kind of want to read it again with the awareness that I'm seeing how a queer awakening plays out in Spain.
It's candid, charming, relatable. I realize I'm a sucker for illustrations of water, but I really dig the sequence on page 120. Nice variety of panel layouts. Engaging and easy to follow. Love that the limited color palette is in the colors of the Trans Pride Flag.

une BD assez sympa pour raconter une expérience de vie de couple pendant une transition. J'accroche pas trop graphiquement mais ça fait le travail, disons que l'esthétique est un peu trop blogs bd 2010 et que sans la renier, je suis content que cette période soit derrière moi et derrière le monde de la bd.
Je suis pas complètement convaincue malgré tout. Je trouve le récit de leur vie de couple vraiment touchant. L'autrice est vraiment sincère sur ses premières réactions face à la transition de sa meuf, et sur comment son regard se transforme peu à peu. Mais ça me fatigue que dans la plupart des récits d'expériences de ce type, qu'on va souvent refiler aux so called alliés pour mieux comprendre, il y a un niveau théorique sur le genre aussi confus. Le bouquin est plein de contre-sens politiques et de takes éclatées, notamment des trucs born this way vraiment nazes ou un discours sur les "stéréotypes de genre" niveau féminisme de maternelle (oh la la se serait tellement plus simple si en fait on avait plus de stéréotypes de genre vraiment je me demande pourquoi personne n'y avait pensé avant). Je demande pas que chaque récit intime nous réecrive du Delphy hein, mais là c'est une grosse soupe qui n'aide franchement pas grand monde et participe à construire des discours hors-sol.
Alors oui vraiment c'est super la représentation tout ça tout ça mais je pense qu'on à le droit d'être un peu plus exigeantes et de dépasser des discours biologisant à la "on ne devient pas trans on naît trans" et où le patriarcat est une simple affaire de stéréotypes et de garçons qui n'ont pas le droit de jouer à la poupée et pas d'un système d'exploitation organisé contre lequel peut être on pourrait s'organiser politiquement.

A nice book that seems intended for people who don't know much about LGBT stuff. I imagine it would a fairly sensitive "crash course" for that audience. Some of the definitions in this book strike me as not so exact, but that seems okay for this level of discussion. Rather than leaning into the memoir framework, this book uses Sara and Diana's story as a template for spreading advice and awareness. I was interested in (and expecting based on the description) a more focused exploration of their personal experiences.
