Ever wonder what that creepy department store clerk does when he goes home?
When Max Harmon took the detective job in Rohm, he figured it was a nice little all-American town and a great place to spend his days until retirement. Boy, was he wrong! The department is riddled with antiquated, sexist, misogynistic, good old boy ideas and favors. His partner is as close to worthless as he can be, his predecessor killed himself, and the Chief of police is a yes many for the mayor and city council. What could go wrong?
The one saving grace is Max makes the acquaintance of the retired Chief of Police. Max is faced with a case of two high school kids that have disappeared without a trace and a sexual assault that the Chief would just as soon sweep under the carpet. All on his first day! Never short on opinions or wise counsel. Will Max stick around, or will he fall into the When in Rohm… mindset.

Micheal Maxwell has traveled the globe on the lookout for strange sights, sounds, and people. His adventures have taken him from the Jungles of Ecuador and the Philippines to the top of the Eiffel Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge, and from the cave dwellings of Native Americans to The Kehlsteinhaus, Hitler’s Eagles Nest! He’s always looking for a story to tell and interesting people to meet.
Micheal Maxwell was taught the beauty and majesty of the English language by Bob Dylan, Robertson Davies, Charles Dickens, and Leonard Cohen.
Mr. Maxwell has traveled the globe, dined with politicians, rock stars, and beggars. He has rubbed shoulders with priests and murderers, surgeons and drug dealers, each one giving him a part of themselves that will live again in the pages of his books.
Micheal Maxwell has found a niche in the mystery, suspense, genre with The Cole Sage Series that gives readers an everyman hero, short on vices, long on compassion, and a sense of fair play, and the willingness to risk everything to right wrongs. The Cole Sage Series departs from the usual, heavily sexual, profanity-laced norm and gives readers character-driven stories, with twists, turns, and page-turning plot lines.
Micheal Maxwell writes from a life of love, music, film, and literature. Along with his lovely wife and travel partner, Janet, he lives in a small town in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.
If Max Harmon thought that Moving from a busy city like Tampa to small town Rohm would be a cushy number, he was soon proved wrong. Max was to start his job as detective in the Rohm PD and what a culture shock it turned out to be, he had a partner who was the only other detective at the station and who was worse than useless, he was soon to discover that there was no digital database, no backup SWAT team, no media affairs to deal with the press, there wasn't even an interview room, it wasn't needed, there was no crime in Rohm.....except that there was and the whole PD from the chief downwards and also the City Hall, were dens of corruption. Max learned that the detective whose place he was taking had committed suicide, but he had left Max with a conundrum that worried him. When two young people disappeared without trace Max was appalled that no one seemed to care, no wonder there was no crime, it was being ignored. Add to that an allegation of rape from a young woman who also alleged that indecent pictures of her had been taken of her without her consent and that she was being blackmailed to keep quiet and more important that the perpetrator was very close to home, Max knew that he was about to uncover a can of worms and that his life could be put in danger. The saving grace was that Max had made three good friends who would would help him, his landlord ex Police Chief John Tower, the only decent cop in the PD Greg Ross who had been demoted from patrolman to sit at a desk and beautiful reporter for the local press, Wendy Turner. I knew that I would enjoy this story from the first few pages, it is convoluted and contains sexual harassment, rape, pornographic pictures, nepotism, blackmail and violence but all the ends tie together beautifully at the finish. A great start to a new series.
Lots of irreverent humor and mysteries to solve. Max is new to Rohm, a nice little town where corruption seems to keep everyone happy. Everyone except those that aren't on the take. They seem to get stuck in a corner. Two high school kids disappear and no one seems too concerned. Max's partner is no help. Throw in the police chief's son-in-law being accused of rape, and this isn't the quiet town Max expected it to be. He isn't alone, though. Greg, the desk clerk, is one of those that got displaced when the new chief took over. Max ended up renting a cottage from the former police chief, who retired early and Wendy, the reporter who is also new to town. Maybe together they can clean up Rohm. Highly recommend this book!
It was a long drive from Tampa to Rohm and Max went straight to meet the police chief to report in for his new job as detective. Rohm is a small town with a small police department, just the thing Max needed after events in Tampa. There will be only two detectives, Max and Paul Talbot. It doesn’t take long for Max to realize that the chief is a political appointee who really doesn’t know how to run a police department and doesn’t seem to care. His partner, Paul, doesn’t seem to like to do much work either. So it looks like Max will carry the burden of work for now. The chief told him there’s not much action in the sleepy little town, anyway. As he is settling into his new desk he finds an envelope taped to the side of one of the drawers. It’s filled with bundles of one-hundred-dollar bills. The very next day two high school kids disappear without a trace and a woman reports a sexual assault against the chief’s son-in-law. What has he gotten himself into?
This is the first book I have read by Micheal Maxwell and it definitely won’t be the last. In fact, I went straight from this book to the second book in the series and now am anxiously awaiting the next one. In the meantime, I’ll be checking out some of the other books Micheal has written. I’m betting they’ll be great as well. Don’t miss this one folks, Max Harmon is a character you’re going to like.
Hero cop Max Harmon, is the MC in Micheal Maxwell's epic new series opener, When in Rohm.
Max comes to the small US town of Rohm, to find he has a lazy partner, a corrupt Chief, a crooked, deceased predecessor and a wave of murder, kidnap and perversion, (the latter perpetuated online) that it seems he'll have to resolve virtually by himself.
Gradually other characters, (good, evil, or misguided to say the least) are introduced, each playing their part in developing this riveting story. Halting twisted acts that destroy families and divide communities on many levels, is achieved, for now, thanks to Max & Co's determination to clean up Rohm.
A gritty, realistic, crime-thriller series that you're sure to enjoy...get your copy of When in Rohm, today!
Detective Max Harmon lands in a small town after serving many years as a detective in a large Florida city. 2 teenagers come up missing and Max feels like no one cares. The Police Chief is totally unconcerned and the whole department seems backwards to Max, who then has to take on all the crime in the strange little town, much on his own.
It's an interesting plot and a good story. I've read other books books by this author and I'm going to go read the next Max Harmon Mystery right now.
The main character, Max Harmon, is a decent guy who just wants to do his job. But many around him lack character and honorable intentions. So Max becomes the hero simply by doing the right thing. The book, like Max, is not flashy or complicated, leading to the average rating. But I will read the next book in this series because it is clean and because evil, while present, is not glorified.
Detective Max Harmon moves to Rohm and begins to clean the town up. He works on a double kidnapping, and a rape case and that leads to a pornography ring, as well as a potential criminal payoff. He befriends John Tower and Greg Ross as well as reporter Wendy Turner.
This series will be a good one, with a small town police force solving crimes with a small group of friends.
Max Harman is my kind of police officer…self aware, dedicated, and not afraid to push back at those in high places that needn’t be there. While the first chapter or so seems a little slow it’s because of the character development the author made use of. Really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what’s next in Rohm.
Micheal Maxwell does it again! A tantalizing glimpse of a man ever so slowly coming to terms with some traumatic event in his near past, establishing himself as a beacon of righteousness and truth in a small, lovely-appearing town with a calm façade hiding, apparently, deep and deadly secrets.
This book was a fun read. It is a story about a big city police detective who moves to a small town police department. He has to deal with small town politics, two kidnappings, a lazy partner and other issues. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read the next book.
A very well written story, with lots of intriguing problems for the new member of Rohm police department. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of Max Harmon
Small towns have secrets, and this small town is no exception. Loved the characters and the writing. This was my first book of Micheal Maxwell's, but it won't be the last. I highly recommend it!
The local police really don’t act like it, do they??? There is really something rotten in Rohm, isn’t there??? Max certainly shakes tings up!!! I enjoyed the story and recommend the book.
Excellent story with a complex plot! Good mystery and lots of action. I loved Max, the REAL police detective, and look forward to meeting him again between the pages.
