Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

Okay, so, the back of this book says Amy’s sister is coming for Thanksgiving, but there is no mention of Thanksgiving anywhere in the book (and that’s why I picked it up to read).

Anyway, Amy’s dad had a daughter from a previous marriage, but for some reason he never told Amy. So he Springs this on her one day and tells her Ashley is coming to visit. Amy has always been an only child, so she is thrilled to have a sister. Liz knows better. She tries to explain to Amy that with the good of having a sister also comes the bad, but Amy won’t hear it.

Ashley is a hit, particularly among the Unicorns and the boys of the school. I’m shocked that Jessica liked her, because she generally can’t stand not having attention. I honestly think the only reason she doesn’t care is because Ashley is modest and doesn’t want the attention. If she actually liked being popular, Jess would have to squash her like a bug.

Amy immediately begins to feel inferior, despite the fact that Ashley stays nice to her throughout the novel. She knows Ashley is better at her in everything - except writing. When Ashley announces her school essay about who she admires most will be about their dad, Amy quickly says hers will too.

Jessica’s sideplot involves... hairstyles. Yep. So to combat how boring this is, the Unicorns decide to recruit fresh blood into their group to make life more interesting. Who do they want? Ashley! Of course. There’s only one problem: Ashley won’t hang out with them without Amy. Amy wants to be the honorary member of the Unicorns, but only to impress Ashley. At every outing they go on Amy tries too hard to impress the girls. Only Liz and Ashley laugh at her jokes. Amy knows she should be happy for Ashley and love her, but she simultaneously feels so jealous.

Ashley is the lead in the ballet production of Sleeping Beauty. They even reference how Jessica took the lead way back in book two! But that was only because Jess was a cunt who HAD to get her way. When the recital location changes, Ashley leaves a note for Amy and the family to see. Amy gets there before her dad and throws it away. She’s fed up with being invisible. But then she goes upstairs to get a sweater and ends up reading Ashley’s school essay... which turns out to be about Amy and not their dad! Amy feels so awful and goes off in search of her father.

Turns out she worries for nothing because their dad makes it to the recital after all. Amy ends up not telling Ashley about it, but she does come clean to her father, who admits he should have taken her feelings more into consideration when Amy got to town (you think?!). Of course, in the end Amy is happy with her sister and realizes that she is okay with being good at what she’s good at.

Quotes:

Liz: What could be more incredible than finding out that your father was married to someone else before your mother?

Liz, honey, it happens all the time.

Lila: As soon as we open up our door to the whole school, we risk losing our exclusivity.

You also risk finding out that no one gives a fuck about the Unicorns.

Ashley: But living in Sweet Valley must be like living in paradise. It’s so incredibly beautiful.

You aren’t allowed to visit Sweet Valley without taking brainwashing classes first!

Steven: Someone might think you escaped from the Sweet Valley Mental Institution.

Breaking news: SV has a mental institution!!

Jessica’s thoughts: Besides, Ashley would be leaving Sweet Valley soon, so she wasn’t a real threat.

Lord.

Jessica: I wish we had interesting people in Sweet Valley to look at.

Isn’t that supposed to be the Unicorns??

Lila: I got my workout at the mall.
Jessica: I guess your hand must get pretty tired from taking your Dad’s credit card in and out of your wallet.

I remember thinking as a kid that suddenly finding out you had a sister would be SO COOL. Now as an adult, this book is extremely problematic.

First of all, Mr. Sutton meets and marries this woman, divorces her, remarries the new Mrs. Sutton, and has Amy in the span of about two years, since Amy and Ashley are only 18 months apart. The original wife doesn't bother to tell Mr. Sutton that she's had a kid for YEARS, and then there is no mention that he ever bothers to visit or even call in all that time. They're hiding all of this from Amy too, until randomly the ex decides it's time for Ashley to meet her dad and half-sister and sends her to them for TWO WEEKS.

What even is this nonsense!? What is wrong with these adults?

But if you view this book through the eyes of Little Alex, it's still a lot of fun to read. I love Ashley, even though she is never seen or even heard from again.
