Collecting a lot of Brother Voodoo tales, appearances and team ups this was not a book on my radar at all but it was on the shelf at my local public library and I finally checked it out and enjoyed the deep dive into all things Jericho Drumm, voodoo, and Marvel goodness and oddities including his appearances alongside Jack Russell in Werewolf by Night #39-#41 against the odd sorcerer Glitternight.

Who knew Voodoo

Brother Voodoo is a product of his time. In the early 70's Black Power was in full swing. Voodoo while not new, was popular along with other supernatural themes at that time. Marvel was at the forefront of adding another Black superhero to it's roster, the first being Black Panther. This book captures the earliest appearance and adventures of this complex hero. He is a mystic like Dr. Strange, but has a more complex nuance to him. For one, he has his dead twin brother spirit inside him. This gives him superhuman strength and the ability to temporary possess other people. Another great thing about this story. Is the culture of the Haitian island is on full display. Having visited there in my youth. I witnessed a few Voodoo ceremonies. And while some of the things in the comic are not accurate. The tone and the history of how this was a real religion in Africa and not the mumbo jumbo that Hollywood portrayed in movies. Great read even though towards the end the new writers seem to not know what to do with him. They just started throwing him into anything supernatural. It's still cool to see him used as a guest star.

It's a shame that the character of Brother Voodoo didn't take off as they were obviously expecting and had only roughly a dozen adventures before his revival in thr 21st century. He is an interesting character with a great deal of up tapped potential. I really enjoyed these tales!
