The Spurgeon thru the Scriptures series is an effort to make the Prince of Preacher’s sermons a bit more approachable for the average reader. The aim is to reorganize all of Charles Spurgeon’s 3,535 sermons from his massive 63 volume Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit Sermons set into canonical order. This way an average reader is able to gradually wade into the indefatigable preacher’s work, and can begin with any Scripture they choose.The language of the volumes has also been lightly updated, replacing the deeply archaic words with a more modern rendering, however leaving the majority of the original text, retaining the character and flavor of Spurgeon’s powerful unction without the distancing which aged language usually produces. Spurgeon’s preaching was so prolific, that very little of the Inspired Volume was left unpreached - resulting in an amazingly robust journey through the Scriptures. It is our hope that Spurgeon’s words through these volumes will resound yet again, working profound enrichment and renewal in Christ’s Church.Volume II of the series, On Abraham, contains twenty-four sermons of Charles Spurgeon covering Abraham’s history before the birth of Isaac - from Genesis 11 to Genesis 20.

About the author

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.

I like these “Spurgeon Through the Scriptures” volumes. I grew up my whole life hearing Spurgeon quotes, and only in the last year or so have I really been reading his sermons. He’s brilliant! This series organizes the sermons in canonical order, which I like. The only possible drawback is that Spurgeon sometimes preached on the same text multiple times, years apart—usually he comes at the text in different ways in the different sermons, so I usually don’t mind. However, in this volume I discovered that Spurgeon really liked to use Lot’s escape from Sodom as a picture of salvation, and he preached several sermons from that text over the years. It did start to get a bit tedious at that point, I admit—but I’m still a big fan of organizing his sermons by Scripture reference. My brain just likes it that way.

This series pretty much leaves the sermons in their original form, with only some light editing. The most noticeable change is the replacement of the name “Jehovah” with “YHWH.” (Not sure why they deemed that necessary.) It also includes, at the end, a list of resources and commentaries that Spurgeon recommended, which is pretty useful. I’ll be reading the next volume pretty soon.
