Trauma and intrigue bring an unlikely couple together in a sleepy Illinois suburb…
Bex Mahoney knows all too well what it’s like to be a loner. As a girl who’d much rather get lost in books and Netflix than makeup and school dances, it’s taken her all of six months to adjust to a new high school and the friends who come with it. But as much as she wants to find some peace following the death of her father, she can’t seem to grasp hold of it like she should. That is until she’s partnered up with a boy in chem who seems to carry more weight on his shoulders than Bex ever has.
Midnight Turner is lost in a dark world that Bex can’t even come close to touching. It’s because of his mysterious persona, though, that her intrigue with him grows stronger by the day. But when a flashback into Midnight’s past has him yanking Bex under chem tables and crying in Latin against her neck, Bex makes it her new life goal to figure him out.
When Bex’s closest friend tells her to steer clear of Midnight, a former member of a dangerous cult, an already insatiable curiosity in Bex grows deeper. But with this curiosity blooms new love. The kind that neither of them ever saw coming. Torn between a past he can’t change and a future she desires, both Midnight and Bex must learn to live in the present where the demons from Midnight’s prior life return to either haunt them…or worse.
Well, if that wasn’t a surprising little book! I thoroughly enjoyed Midnight and Bex; it was a dark and twisty tale with shots of light through it. Trauma, abuse, and grief mixed with new love.
Midnight is a loner, though not by choice; his past is filled with pain, grief, and trauma that no one should ever have to go through, especially someone so young. Kidnapped by Emmanuel, the man who's been hunting down his mother, Midnight finds himself trapped with the Children of His Mercy, a twisted cult led by Emmanuel, or The Prophet. The guy is twisted as fuck, a murderer, abuser, and rapist, not to mention hella fucking delusional. Midnight spent a year of his life under the abusive rule of Emmanuel, being tortured physically and mentally until he was finally rescued and taken to live in Altoona, where he meets Bex.
Bex Is also a loner, though, by choice; she’s salty, sassy, and never shuts up when you get her going; she’s also filled with grief over her dad's death. Bex is intrigued by Midnight, but her friend warns her off, not that it does much good, Bex is hell bend on discovering Midnight’s secrets, but as he opens up to her, she starts to feel his pain and wants to help him. The two grow closer, and a beautiful relationship blossoms. But not all is well that ends well; someone from Midnight's past shows up to ruin what has bloomed. Will Bex and Midnight have a happy ending, or will the trauma of their past become their future?
I loved how this story was told, with chapters from each character's point of view, Bex telling the present and Midnight sharing his past. I was fascinated by the weird, twisty cult that held Midnight captive and his journey. I didn’t so much enjoy Midnight and Bex's relationship, to begin with, but as the story unfolded, it made more sense to me and was so sweet and just everything Midnight deserved. My only bugbear with this book was how many times the word ‘dude’ appeared, which was a lot. Other than that, I really enjoyed reading Midnight and Bex and would recommend it to anyone looking for a tale that weaves together trauma and first love beautifully.
This book has a lot of challenges that the characters face. For example, Midnight being in the cult and meeting Bex, he has to face the fact that someone is willing to be there for him and be his friend.
Well, wow. To say I absolutely devoured this book would be an understatement. I loved every single thing about it. Heather Van Fleet is an absolutely talented writer.
This book had my heart by the balls, you guys. It really did. I wanted nothing more but to hug Midnight and Bex and for them to really get a happy ending because damn, they deserved it.
The horrid things that Midnight lived through were just...gut-wrenching. He'd gotten kidnapped and had been trapped in a cult, where to say he'd been abused mentally and physically, just doesn't do it justice. My heart physically ached for him.
Bex, man, I loved her character. Yes, the girl was hurting, grieving and a tad lost herself, but she was that ray of sunshine Midnight needed all along. I love how sassy she was and how once she set her mind to something, she wouldn't stop. She was adamant on getting to know Midnight, despite what her friends told her, and well, she ended up becoming his saving grace in a lot of ways.
I loved the twists and turns the author weaved into the storyline. It definitely kept me needing to read, read, read, so I could find out how it would all wrap up. There were times I felt as if I was holding my breath, anxious to see what would come next...and I LOVE it when that happens.
Trauma, suspense, and young love made this an absolute must-read for me!
I really liked this book! I personally liked how it jumped between time periods and perspectives. This was not a lighthearted romance, so don’t go into it thinking it is. This is heavy stuff, but I feel like it is handled with care. I wish the present day story line was more plot driven and their relationship more developed in the beginning, but that’s my only criticism! I really liked this story and the “twist.”
Thank you to the publisher for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received in advance copy to read and review these are all my personal opinions and honest review.....
Toxic
I really hate giving bad reviews but this book was very toxic and I don't think a younger audience should read it.
The cult sickened me especially taking scripture out of context but cults do that and you aren't suppose to like them (so that's good writing I just had a hard time reading it). There were other things I didn't like but it was my own personal reasons the crude language at times was one of them and when a character said "the pain pills were badass because not only did they help me sleep but they also helped me forget the pain inside and out." For a book that talks about consent as much as it did and respecting people's boundaries this comment from one of the main characters seemed odd and not needed in the story and also concerning to put in a ya novel. I did not connect with the characters because of how toxic they each were through the whole book and not a good parent in sight just these teens being abused or being neglected even outside the cult. I didn't want to connect with these characters because I did not want them to stay with me after reading.
The author is a very good writer the story flowed nicely and I didn't get board reading and finished it rather quickly (to me that's good that means it flowed nicely and didn't drag). The story made sense and the time jumps fit in beautiful. I don't want to hate on her ability as an author because she did do a fantastic job writing. The story itself was just not for me and I don't think appropriate for a younger teen audience but that's just my own opinion. Like I said I really hate leaving a bad review because these are just my own opinions someone else could enjoy the story I just can't recommend it.
I'm trying to be fair with my stars because like I said it was well written and executed but my personality didn't mesh with the story itself

Review: I wasn’t sure what exactly to expect from this book and I’m glad I went into this book without knowing much! At first I thought the relationship between Midnight and Bex was a little fast! I also thought Bex was a bit annoying. However, once I read more into the book Bex grew on me! I really enjoyed the pace of this book it started off slow in the beginning but then things happen and I discovered more about Midnight with his story I was invested!! I finished this book with a smile on my face! Although I wish I could read another book on Midnight and Bex I am not ready to let these characters go!
Thank you so much Wise Wolf Books for allowing me to read this book!
Wow. This was really unexpected in the best way. The cover may have you thinking this is a lighthearted romance but it’s definitely so much more. Beautiful but with some really heavy situations and topics, I couldn’t put it down…I loved the writing, the characters, and the way I related to them as well in certain aspects. I don’t want to give anything away, but just know you’ll feel a lot of different emotions while reading. A little dark and twisty with young love, healing, trauma, and so much more…Loved it.
Even though it’s about high school kids. It deals with cults, kidnappings, dysfunctional families, and kind of everything in between. Well written and kept me interested enough as nighttime reading that I almost couldn’t wait for bedtime so I could read some more of it!
Not a fan. Came off as too fast and too convoluted for my reading tastes. Also ticked the box of repeatedly referring to a character as 'broken/damaged' and that's a big NO for me.
