Shuggie Bain By Douglas Stuart, Nomadland By Jessica Bruder 2 Books Collection
Shuggie 'We were bowled over by this first novel, which creates an amazingly intimate, compassionate, gripping portrait of addiction, courage and love.' The judges of the Booker Prize 'Douglas Stuart has written a first novel of rare and lasting beauty.' - Observer It is 1981. Glasgow is dying and good families must grift to survive. Agnes Bain has always expected more from life. She dreams of greater a house with its own front door and a life bought and paid for outright (like her perfect, but false, teeth). But Agnes is abandoned by her philandering husband, and soon she and her three children find themselves trapped in a decimated mining town.
Nomadland tells a revelatory tale of the dark underbelly of the American economy – one which foreshadows the precarious future that may await many more of us. At the same time, it celebrates the exceptional resilience and creativity of people who have given up ordinary rootedness to survive, but have not given up hope. From the beetroot fields of North Dakota to the campgrounds of California to Amazon’s CamperForce program in Texas, employers have discovered a new, low-cost labour pool, made up largely of transient older adults. These invisible casualties of the Great Recession have taken to the road by the tens of thousands in RVs and modified vans, forming a growing community of nomads.

This book was magnificent in every way. I will never forget the experience of reading this story and immersing myself in Suggie’s life. He will remain in my heart and thoughts forever. I can’t wait for Douglas Stuart’s next book.
I just finished reading Shuggie Bain in under 4 days! I really couldn’t put this book down. It really got you in the feels & made you feel for young Shuggie. Great read & would highly recommend
A dark and sad story, a worthwhile reading however I’ve only given it 3 stars as I just found the story to be very flat rather than any twists and turns, it very much plateaued all the way through.
