The early days of Cross Security, cramped space, minimum employees - Lucien, Justin, Gloria, Amir and a few operatives. Lucien had money, he had ambition, he had dreams, he didn't have Jade. He didn't know what to do, couldn't come on too strong & frighten her off, not too distant or she would think he no longer cares. The problem was, he wanted her to be with him permanently, to move her in, to tell her he loved her. He knew he couldn't do any of these things. She had come back for a few days, felt she was being followed and left again with no decision as to their future. In the meantime a new client had appeared, Trey Knox. Having had his large collection of sports memorabilia stolen, he wanted Cross to recover it. The police were not getting anywhere, and he wanted it back like yesterday. For some reason, his gut tweaked and he paused before accepting his new client. Sounded pretty standard gig, but as he inspected Knox's home he noticed the alarm was professionally disabled, as was other security equipment. He asked Knox if he had any debts, gambling or otherwise, any enemies who would do this, although answered in the negative, Lucien wasn't convinced. As following events proved he should have trusted his gut. In between locacating new premises, soul searching regarding his future with or without Jade, he finds the stolen property and illegal items in the storage locker. Conscious gets the better of him, and he phones the police with an anonymous tip off. He could leave multiple ousies, signs and many kilos of coke to find their way to killing people. And that is when the trouble really started... Well worth the read, if only to get some knowledge of Lucien Cross in his early days. G K Parks knows her stuff and always saves a little twist for the end when you think it is all over, but it's not quite.
I would highly suggest reading this story/series prior to starting the Alexis Parker series. I wish that I had known about this series before I read the other, but even though I read them backwards, they were both great series. I hope that there will be more books in this series in the near future. I would definitely recommend this book, series, and author.
Great to learn about Lucien Cross. Helps too know more about him when he meets Alexis Parker. Enjoyed both cross security books. Him and Alexis would make a good team. I just love Justin.
Calculated Risk was a good novel to read. I had to read this after "Fallen Angel." I enjoyed reading about his beginning as a Private Security Owner. Lucien is mysterious but I understand his character better. Excellent books !!!
Lucien gets caught up in a mob related crime when a man comes to him looking to recover his stolen sports memorabilia collection.
As he uncovers the fact that his client lied about why it was stolen, he gets himself on the mob’s radar for finding contraband when he locates the stolen sports stuff.
He also finds himself being followed by a friend of Jade’s ex, so wonders if it’s safe for her to be with him.
I enjoyed the book, but found the last part where there’s an added layer to the client’s deception a bit uninteresting. The suspense, danger, and Lucien’s paranoia are all exciting parts of his story. Love his friend Sarah, the introduction of Renner, and Freddy G.
Cross has been through a lot. Taking on what seemed like a simple investigation, with a new client, into a robbery. What happened next was a long difficult case which nearly killed him, not once but several times. The client turning out to be a complex liar who crossed a Russian mafia contingency dealing in weapons and drugs. Cross was out of his depth meeting dead ends and Russians that wanted him dead, determined to get to the bottom of it he carried on regardless.
Lucian and Jade part ways. He's working on his business, finding a bigger office and hiring specialists of all kinds. He takes a case that looks pretty straightforward but ends up with every complication in the world and finds that his client is involved with the Russian mafia and has an illegal import export business. He leaves Lucian high and dry but Lucian finds him and gives him a dire warning. On the way back home he contacts Jade for a few days in Vegas.
