French Quarter Mystery #3

A Deadly Check-In

Rate this book
Samantha’s unexpected family reunion should have been full of joy, not ghosts and murder. To prove her innocence, Sammy must investigate a haunted hotel. Can she solve the mysteries of the past and present, to save her future?

A surprise visit from Sammy’s relatives causes more trouble than she imagined. When she discovers her cousin dead at Hotel Jeanne, she becomes the prime suspect. Not only does the family reunion bring up terrible memories, Sammy’s romantic relationship is put to the test.

But she’s not the only one who needs help. The hotel’s new owner is overwhelmed with his antagonistic employees and disruptive ghosts. By organizing the inn’s long-neglected library, Sammy plans not only to clear her name, but learn who, or what, is haunting the hotel.

With the support of her New Orleans family, Sammy must track down the killer and discover the real reason behind the spiritual disturbances at Hotel Jeanne. Can she find the murderer before they try to turn her into a ghost?

A Deadly Check-In is the third book in the The French Quarter Mysteries featuring West Coast transplant Samantha Richardson. Join Sammy as she explores the Big Easy by solving the mysteries of the past and present in this new modern, cozy mystery series.

A Deadly Check-in Earns 5+/5 Tomb Flowers… Engaging Gem!

Life is paradoxical. Sammy’s Thibodeaux family is loving and supportive, but her newly discovered St. Martin family is challenging, even murderous. Her brother is somewhere unknown (don’t ask), and although she’s reticent about contacting an aunt she knew nothing about, Aunt Charlene decided to make a surprise visit along with cousins, Jasper and Scarlett. It was far from a happy reunion with Scarlett’s cruel attack, a dunk in the pool, and knowledge of a previous affair with Conner, Sammy’s boyfriend. It’s the family inheritance Scarlet really wants, a family mausoleum in a prime location that realistically could fetch a five figure payday if sold. Jasper is more consoling, offering to meet, even Scarlet texts, too, about meeting with just her ahead of the family, but when Sammy arrives, she finds Scarlett in the pool … dead. With one confrontation with the victim witnessed by several and the disagreement over the ownership of the tomb, Sammy once again is scrutinized by the NOPD.

This series is at the top of my “best” list, and in this third book, the mysteries surrounding Sammy have brought together her Thibodeaux family with her biological St. Martin family with obvious contrasts between the two setting up a dilemma of which side Sammy owes her loyalty. Sammy’s past and her real identity as Sarah Jane is a unique element complicating the story with issues related to her adoptive parents’ secrecy, her uncle’s complicity and his death, differences in the cousins’ upbringings, and her family’s inheritance. Although sadly she’s family, the victim seems a karmic choice with her personality, attitude, and treatment of others rubbing many the wrong way. Those in the line of her fire are added to the suspect list oddly on which puts Sammy and Connor, too. I was intrigued by how Jen creatively kept an air of suspicion around the aunt and remaining cousin, and even others warn Sammy about the family, especially the aunt having a hidden agenda, but is that all? Intense interactions, ghost stories, hidden secrets, and a treasure mark the path all the way to a surprise conclusion … Whew!

Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author Jen Pitts. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

The third in the series following Sammy as she tries to solve the murder of her cousin at a New Orleans Hotel.

Set against the backdrop of a French Quarter Hotel filled with ghosts and secrets, Sammy tries to uncover the murderer and gets to know her Aunt and cousins who are staying at the hotel with an agenda for themselves.

I love the different personalities of the characters and how they interact. It shows that family does not have to be blood-related.

I recommend this whole series and am looking forward to the next book. It would make a great series for Hallmark or a similar channel to pick up.

Families & Murder

As a Native New Orleanian, I love this series. Though landmarks are scattered through out the stories, it's the vibes of the many eccentric characters that make the French Quarter a unique community. Add to that a cracking good mystery and the series keeps getting better. I recommend reading the whole series in order but any of the is a great stand-alone read.

I love this series!

This is the third book in the French Quarter Mystery series, and I hope that they keep coming! These stories are set in the French Quarter in New Orleans, which is one of my favorite places. I love the descriptions of the city and the small details that bring me right back to the city.

This is a great continuation of the series and I love the regular characters development, but I also love the new characters who occasionally get introduced into the story.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a good cozy mystery.

I'm continuing to enjoy reading the French Quarter Mysteries by Jen Pitts. Elements of the history of New Orleans are woven into the mystery story and the main character's "Nancy Drew" tendencies are not only tolerated, but helpful to the police. The ambiance of NOLA is more tolerant to differences.

Trust

Knowing who you can trust can be a daunting task. Sammy has to learn who she can trust and who she needs to avoid. I was glad she figures it out. This series is so full of great characters, intrigue, and drama that I couldn't put it down. More please!

Got To See What Happens Next

I love visiting a part of New Orleans vicariously through Sammy’s adventures. The descriptions engage all of the senses, the diverse characters are colorful, and the genealogy/ghost angle adds the sugar to the beignet!

Much quicker read. Things are settling down for Sammy with her boyfriend in town and her new job. Then some of her real family shows up. Wonderful characters and the hotel is a charming location for a good mystery.

the sudden arrival of her aunt and cousins is a less than happy series of encounters for Sammy

are they looking to connect? or do they have other things on their list

family and romance in complicated connections are explored and mourned
