For George Guilbert life at an all-boys school, all-consuming religious convictions and a natural reticence mean that his student relationships with the fairer sex are stumbling and inept. Frustrated and dismayed by the lack of heavenly guidance he takes stock of his life and his beliefs, hardens his heart and tries to re-invent himself. When at last he does fall in love his troubles seem to be over. But unless he has really left behind his old ways of thinking, the relationship will struggle to survive. More than fifty years later, at a promotion for his novel, a young woman makes a startling revelation which leads him ultimately to a new appraisal of the events that changed his life.

A bit slow at first, but once I got into the story, it was a gentle, enjoyable read. I liked exploring the main character's battle with innocence and angst. Couldn't help thinking about Holden Cauldfield and how Salinger would have approached his character had Cauldfield been in 1950s England!
