Disciple Making: The Core Mission of the Church

Rate this book
TAKE HOLD OF THE CHURCH’S CORE MISSION

The early church did not approach church the way most Western churches do today. If they had, the church would not still be around today. Many churches today are producing church attenders, but Jesus called us to produce—and reproduce—disciple makers. In Disciple Making, Harrington and Sager make the scriptural case for disciple making as the church’s core mission. They define what it means to be a disciple and articulate the results among churches who shift toward cultivating a disciple making culture.

I love that these men have not only created a clear and concise theology for every believer, but also that they are disciple makers who seek to live out what they teach.

Jim Putman, author of Real-Life Discipleship

A short, compelling read that invites followers of Jesus into the life-changing call to embrace Jesus’ commitment to disciple making.

Dave Clayton, Lead Minister of Ethos Church and Leader of Awaken Nashville

This work is solid, short, and foundational. This practical tool can help church leaders to get on the same page.

Bill Hull, author and founder of The Bonhoeffer Project

BOBBY HARRINGTON (D.Min., Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is CEO of Renew.org and Discipleship.org, both national disciple making networks. Bobby is the founding and lead pastor of Harpeth Christian Church. He is author or co-author of more than a dozen books on disciple making.

W. SCOTT SAGER (D.Min., Southern Methodist University) is Lead Minister at the Green Hills Church in Nashville and Vice President for Church Services at Lipscomb University, where he teaches in the College of Bible and Ministry. Scott is the author of Jesus in Isolation. He founded Christ’s Family Ministries and serves with several charities.

This book for what it was trying to be is better than the 2 out of 5 stars I gave it. It’s nothing profound, but I don’t think it was trying to be. It is a very practical book for disciple making. It definitely has helped me. Read it alongside some of my buddies, and it was a good conversation starter.

A great resource on the importance of disciple making and the role it must play in the life of the Church. People do not naturally become Christ followers. Harrington and Sager powerfully reminded me that the hard work of intentional training and mentoring must be prioritized in order for Christ to be fully formed in others and myself.

Churches often outsource the care of souls to professionals who use rather than yield to the Gospel. Big mistake! That is NOT a mistake made in this book. The authors assume the developmental trajectory of Christians should be guided in the church by an understanding of discipleship modeled in Scripture. Discipleship as a spiritual development path integrates care AND purpose. Care matters and it matters eternally when placed in a Christian discipleship framework. What if the church reclaimed care of the soul and provided that care with a commitment to disciple making! THAT would, as it has done in the past, change the world!

Bobby Harrington and Scott Sager call the church to disciple making as core to the church’s mission. They challenge the idea of discipleship as a secondary or optional piece of Christian living. Two dimensions of the book stand out to me. First, they have done a great job of packaging the material in ways that are easy for groups to work through the book together for small groups, bible classes, or even one-on-one discipleship sessions. And, Renew’s value and faith statements at the end also provide great materials for class, small group, or individual study as each item could be studied in depth as part of one’s spiritual growth journey.

Second, the book provides an explanation of what these authors do day in and day out. They themselves are serious practitioners of what they explain and advocate in this book … and they do it effectively. Their impact is huge and their co-authored book comes from deep commitments to share what they are currently doing. Discipleship has become core to who these men are and it shows in the fruit of their lives. No wonder the resource they provide is something that could be read and implemented in a week by individuals who are serious about the call to be and to make disciples.

Disciple Making provides a good foundation for a thought-provoking discussion about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ and what is involved in making disciples of Jesus Christ. "What is a disciple of Jesus? Answer: a disciple of Jesus is someone who is following Jesus, being changed by Jesus, and is committed to the mission of Jesus." "Disciple making is entering into relationships to intentionally help people follow Jesus, be changed by Jesus, and join the mission of Jesus." It is quite persuasive in the position that all Christians are called to be disciples and disciple-makers. I also agreed with the urgency of the mission to bring "living water" to a world "under siege" by Satan.

A very important book urging and reminding us to get back to the basics that have been overlooked and watered down for centuries: to be a disciple of Jesus and what that means. Bobby Harrington and Scott Sager present a clear picture of the core mission of the church: to go and make disciples--part of the Great Commission. A book needed by every Christian, church, and small group. This book presents the scriptural foundations, thought provoking and reflective questions to ask ourselves, and practical ways to be a true disciple of Christ. "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31)

Very good book on importance of being disciple makers.

This is a short, but very concise book on the importance of focusing on the importance of being a disciple maker.

This is something we have talked about in our church for a while. It is time to quit talking and start doing.
