The Omega rangers have a new mission to stop the Empyreals and so they ask Zordon for help but then it becomes a mission about breaking out Drakkon and on the run and then battling different monsters particularly the horrids who are these space vampires and there is a great moment for Trini and Drakkon there and then they come across some weird Drakkon prison planet and its an escape from that world, strange cosmic adventures while they are looking for Empyreals! Fun stuff! The writing is good and the art even better and some long run threat is being planed out here for sure.

So this series is mostly a continuation of the Go Go Power Rangers/Mighty morphin power rangers series but now both This (Power Rangers) and Mighty Morphin are running side by side to each other by same writer, to make the package work better.

And it does.

This focuses on Jason, Trini and Zack as they basically are trying to save the entire universe while the other power rangers focus on earth. The first issue everyone gets together but Jason has to make a huge decision that'll forever effect his relationship with people close to him. This leads to Drakkon coming aboard their ship and, well, let's just say this guy is still fucking crazy. Space vampires, Drakkon's world, and a new threat make this a epic first volume.

I loved it. A 4.5 out of 5.

While Mighty Morphin' hits that MMPR vibe, Power Rangers follows the Omega Rangers into space, and wastes no time in invoking In Space vibes as a result. Throw in Lord Drakkon for funsies and you're in for a good time.

The Omega Rangers and Drakkon head out into the universe to try and track down the big threat of the Unlimited Power era, the Empyreals. It takes a little to get off the ground, starting with a bit of a prison break-esque issue to liberate Lord Drakkon from under Zordon's nose, but then we're off and running. If you enjoyed the later arcs of the Go Go series with Omega Rangers, this is literally just more of the same; we've even still got Go Go artist Francesco Mortarino on deck to draw it.

It's hard to talk too much about this book - I've been singing the praises of all of the Boom! Power Rangers books since they started, and they're surprisingly consistent. This relaunch hasn't lost any of that magic at all, and instead seems to be embracing the wider Power Rangers world in a way that the line hasn't since Shattered Grid.

I don’t know whether I enjoyed the first few issues of this series or Mighty Morphin more, but they both do a great job of uniquely showcasing and keeping us entertained within two different Ranger teams. I love the Omega Ranger storyline, the horror incorporated in this volume, and everything going on with Drakkon here. Looking forward to more! Parrott is a genius.

This series continues to push the Omega Rangers into interesting directions. The art is still a highlight.

A great start to the series. I love this trio and throwing an unpredictable Drakkon into the mix only adds to the intrigue. The artwork and battles were top notch too.

I'm far less interested in what the Omega Rangers are doing than what the Mighty Morphin team is up to. That makes this series a bit of a harder slog for me. It's had some good ideas! Going to the Shattered Grid universe, Onyx, etc. all have the making of a really interesting story. But we kinda keep hitting roadblocks, like the Horrid (which, I get, cause that story shows where Drakkon is now), and the most interesting ideas all seem waylaid more often than not. But it's entertaining, but maybe slow.

Is it just me or is everything going to space these days? Black Panther went to space, the Inhumans went to space (where Marvel did the smart thing and left them there, never to beat up the X-Men again), MCU Thor went to space…

Actually, was it just Marvel characters who kept going to space?

Wait- no- Super Mario went to space too. Thank goodness. I almost lost all my “not-a-fanboy” cred.

Now Power Rangers finally gets a turn in Power Rangers: Volume 1. The rangers are flying through the stars for the first time.

Unless you count Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy… or Space Sentai Kyuranger… or Power Rangers in Space…

Actually, the rangers going to space isn’t that big a deal, is it?

No, the big hook of this book isn’t so much the location as the ongoing adventures of the original red, black and yellow rangers, Jason, Zack and Trini. This sees the three venturing to the furthest stars to seek out an alien threat known as the Empyreals- with none other than Lord Drakkon in tow, no less.

In Ryan Parrot's other Power Rangers book, Mighty Morphin', Parrot spends a good amount of time juggling the six main rangers as well as the hefty supporting cast so that no character gets left behind. He does the same here, technically, but... Well, I thought having fewer characters to juggle would mean that we get really in-depth character development, but Parrot doesn't seem to do a better job of developing characters here than he does with bigger cast. And because of this, I'm trying to figure out where the rest of the page space went to.

Action? No, the book actually contains less action than Mighty Morphin did...

Lore? Maybe, but I don't feel like I understand the Power Rangers universe any better by the end of the book.

Plot? I mean, I still don't have a really good idea about the direction this book's moving in.

This makes it sound like I'm down on Power Rangers, but really, I'm not. I'm just confused how Parrot can take a book that should, by rights, allow him so much creative freedom and end up doing that's at the exact same level as the less creatively-free book. The characters are well-developed to be sure and there's this interesting thing with Jason wondering if he's really cut out to lead (made more interesting by the fact that anyone he speaks to on the matter just basically says "Yeah, you're kinda terrible at this), but the book doesn't entirely live up to it's premise.

Actually, now I know what they're spending all the extra page space on: GENRE SWITCHING!!! In the space of four issues, this book goes from adventure, to space horror, to a kind of "behind enemy lines" war story and I wasn't entirely sure when one genre ended and another began. It makes the prospect of reading the next volume all the more tempting, because I have absolutely no idea where this book is going to go next. That's not something I can say for Mighty Morphin, which makes the plot for the next book abundantly clear.

And maybe that's the whole reason this book exists- to give Ryan Parrot a chance to experiment with these characters outside of the rigid, monster-of-the-week formula that has dominated the TV versions of these characters for so long. If that is the case, I support it full-heartedly.

Art in this book keeps just about perfect stride with the changes in genres. Francesco Mortarino's particular designs are universal enough to fit well in just about any setting and the colours stand out well enough regardless of whether the rangers are on earth, or outrunning space vampires (did I mention there were space vampires? Because there are. There are space vampires), and the action is equal parts bombastic and easy to follow.

And that's Power Rangers Volume 1, really. Good enough to enjoy- good enough to REALLY enjoy, in fact, but it doesn't quite measure up to the Mighty Morphin book.

The ongoing series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers continues in two different versions now. One focuses on the Omega Rangers while the other sticks with the original gang. The first few issues of both of these ongoing series go hand-in-hand at the start. I would recommend going back and forth between the two Vol.1s so you're reading the individual issues in the order in which they were released. By the end of these volumes the two teams each have their own stories to follow.

I loved seeing the Omega rangers interacting with the main Mighty Morphin team, especially the Stone Canyon trio. Zordon and Jason's relationship gets a nice focus. The role of the red ranger is also a focus for Rocky in this volume.

Will Drakkon be good? I give this volume a 5/5. Ryan is taking us on a whole new adventure. I'm excited to see how the more non-Earth elements of the Power Rangers multiverse come into play with the adventures of the Omega rangers.

This is the first volume in the Power Rangers spin-off series from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series. This one follows Jason, Zach and Trini at the Omega Rangers. This volume is the first where they headline and shows them coming back to earth after some harrowing adventures. Now they have a new villain who is destroying entire planets and their only help may be in the form of their arch-nemesis Lord Drakkon. A great read and I can't wait to read the next!

As a Ranger fan this was very disappointing and unsatisfying.

They take a great character like Lord Drakkon and make him some reoccurring foil that might have some redemption yet.

Keep him evil! Keep him a villain! I’m not opposed to villains having pathos, but let’s not shade them in gray.

Also the story is such a lazy “meh” story.
