This one has been my favourite so far! The action was great and I love the character building and banter between everyone. I hate the cliffhangers tho! It makes me so stressed!!
I'm having an emotional breakdown right now. I had cried that tears are streaming down my cheeks and snot is coming out of my nose. I had my heart beating so loudly because the intensity of this volume is even beyond 10. And I enjoyed every bit of it. Everything about this volume is just excellent!
The continuation of Raid on Tachikawa Base arc is nothing but perfection! I love that I finally see the side of Mina that believes in Kafka. And may I have the opportunity to say that she's so freaking mesmerizing at the conclusion of Raid on Tachikawa Base Arc? And I love that glimpse of her and Hoshina from the past! That I literally cried. That's all I wanted to see. I get it now how deserving Hoshina is to stand beside Mina. And I can't wait to see Kafka progress even for the better and stand beside her. I'm still crying, okay. I just love how Mina, Kikoru, and Ichikawa trust Kafka. And dang, he deserves their trust.
And the opening of Kaiju no. 8 Captured arc will leave you breathless! So, what a cliffhanger?!
It's been so long seen I felt these overflowing feelings for a manga series, and it's so good to be here and be part of this thrilling ride.
I didn't expect Kafka's secret to get out so soon!! I was worried about how the defence force would react when it eventually did (and rightfully so with the way things ended this volume), though I'm also happy Mina's still willing to let Kafka try becoming her equal. Cool fight scenes as usual; I'm looking forward to how Kafka will get himself out of this rough time 🙏
Kaiju No. 8 continues to be a super fun, bombastic, yet emotional adventure.
We have the leader of the crew going head to head with a Kaiju, and things aren't looking good. He eventually works together with someone and they might be able to overcome certain death. But then the secret is out, and our hero might be exposed as a Kaiju to the world!
This is an exciting volume with some great fight scenes that are super easy to follow. Always a plus in my book. I also loved the emotional bits here, and felt for the main character and his crew, they're doing a great job giving us a true friendship feel here.
Overall it's fun, exciting, looks great, and has the emotional beats I hope for. A 4.5 out of 5.
Even though there are still some slogans that sound at once a bit funny and adorable in English, Kaijuu no 8 keeps going great. The resolution to the crisis brewing for the last two volumes was surprisingly swift, but the probation period for Kafka seems to be shaping up according to the Chinese curse about interesting times - it's very interesting indeed.
Kaijuu no 8 is an incredibly fast read; I've ran out of chapters already. The art is very clear and dynamic, and Matsumoto seems to be equally skillful with dynamic action scenes and emotional, intimate moments. I really love his version of monster-infected Tokyo.
Mangaka Naoya Matsumoto continues to crank up the stakes with this latest kaiju battle that forces the vice-captain to step up and demonstrate his raison d'être among the Japanese Defense Force. Kafka Hibino goes into the background but is pushed to his moral limits as his actions will have grave consequences going into volume 5.
Once again, mangaka Naoya Matsumoto brilliantly balances action, humour, and individual growth in another pulse-pounding volume in what's bound to become a phenomenal shonen series. I honestly can't imagine how stunning this manga will be once adapted as an anime.
Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshino really steals the show in the opening chapters as we find out a little about his background and a lot about his level of dedication to his captain. A terrific battle against Kaiju No. 10 full of sacrifice and soldierly comradeship segues into a testing of the strength of various friendships as the status quo gets abruptly topples and protagonist Kafka Hibino faces a new deadly challenge. Good stuff!
With masterfully illustrated action and incredily important revelations, this manages to mix heart, tension and combat in a way that keeps you absolutely hooked. It takes a big step narratively, meaning that the events of this book will likely shape what's to come for the next few volumes. Each entry raises the bar higher, although it's hard to see how this could be topped.
There were a couple of things that really made this installment stand out -
The amount of characters we haven't heard much from getting more time in the spotlight Plot progression for Kafka in multiple ways New kaiju threats and more information about how the defense force views them/deals with them Overall raised stakes for all the major players in this story HUGE action to open this volume (Soshiro quickly becoming a favorite of mine) Mina is finally featured and Kikoru is showing some personality (including squaring off with her dad) General Director Isao is finally here for more than a couple panels and it's a BIG step forward for the story.
This has the biggest cliffhanger yet between chapters and it's a really satisfying installment
ITS KAIJU NO. 8 ANIME RELEASE WEEK!!!! in honor i am reading further in the manga as i impatiently wait for the dub to release🤗🫡 and it’s eating as per usual!
With the base under siege and the captain away, Vice-Captain Hoshina steps up to the plate. He’s got the skills, but those skills might not be enough. And when everything is forced into the open, will Kafka have a place left to call home?
Shonen is (always) gonna shonen, and this volume is another massive throwdown between kaiju and man, focused on Hoshina’s efforts to keep the base and its soldiers from harm. It’s pretty genre standard, honestly, with the continued escalation of conflict to what will undoubtedly become ludicrous levels at some point.
Kaiju No.8 keeps me coming back because it has such strong art - I say this every time, this series isn’t exactly a creativity wellspring, but few series can convey what the hell is going on as well as this one. I’ve read enough terrible action sequences to know quality and these do the job and then some. It doesn’t hurt that it has strong female leads too.
The mangaka also remembers to do something besides please the eye and we get a lot of backstory into the nature of why Hoshina is who he is and his loyalty to Mina, the base commander and Kafka’s raison d’être. It’s not high art, but giving us a reason for what’s going on is smart.
There’s also a brilliant double bluff where it looks like Kafka will have no choice but to reveal himself, then gets a last minute reprieve in the form of some classic action movie stuff… then it turns out that the situation was worse than expected.
I have to say, I figured that would be strung out a little longer, but it definitely takes the story in a whole other direction. Kafka turns out to have won the trust of his squad just in time for the greater administration to decide he’s a danger and take him in.
Does this lead to yet another action sequence? It does, fight books are gonna fight, but, again, sometimes you have to accept your genre. It’s not deep stuff - the bulk of this story is easily just panels of stuff blowing up, but it’s still good at doing what it sets out to do. Not as easy as you think.
3.5 stars - I don’t have much else to say, really. I miss the broad comedy from the first volume, honestly, but this isn’t bad and, given my track record with shonen, that’s actually pretty strong praise.
I am convinced that no volume of Kaiju No. 8 can be less than five stars because it's just THAT good! 😤😤😤😤
This series definitely continues to be my favorite ongoing shonen series and feel rightfully so! Every. Single. Time. I pick up a new volume I am completely immersed in this story and have to echo Kafka's words he thinks in the beginning: "Everyone is so amazing!"
I honestly don't even know who to talk about because everyone is always kicking butt and feel I get so starry-eyed reading only for this mangaka to excel in dropping these HUGE plot twists that have me completely done for.
Hoshina was AMAZINNNGGGGGG!!! I have really loved his character, but in this volume, he was absolutely incredible! He better not think anything bad about our man Kafka after what happened (😤😤😤) and boy does something happen!
Kafka has always been super awesome, but this situation changes EVERYTHING yet he is still showing a strength that is beyond what I expected. While he is showing this strength, he is also unashamed to shed tears in one conversation and think it makes his character even more compelling. I'm cheering for you Kafka! NOTHING better happen to you because...
THAT CLIFF HANGER!!! *flips table*
I know I can go just see what happens next on the SJ app, but I LOVE reading this series physically so I will endure and HOPE all will be okay in the next volume. Realistically that's probably wishful thinking because when is ANYTHING in this series okay? Ha! However, can I just say I hate Kikoru's dad? 😡
All in all (and as always), another excellent and highly engaging volume! Definitely continues to have zero disappointment and desperately wanting the next volume!
OH! Almost forgot to mention our boy Ichikawa! We didn't see him much in action, but he is amazing as always and love how he wants to get stronger. Also what he tells Kafka was so moving and love his character even more! 🥰🥰🥰
This series is so fast paced and fun, easy to recommend for action fans. This volume in particular was quite go go go, with huge enemies and huge plot twists abound. I'm surprised at how fast the pacing is, but it serves to keep me engaged in a crowded genre!
