In today’s complex and challenging world, we often find ourselves facing problems for which there seem to be no answers. In this practical and inspirational book, songwriter and author David Friedman explores the idea that there are ALWAYS answers, and they often come in ways we don’t expect, if only we are willing to be open to the possibilities. In 1990, David wrote the song, Help is on the Way, in response to the AIDS crisis. First sung by Nancy LaMott, it has since become the theme song for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and has helped raise millions of dollars for charitable and humanitarian causes around the world. Each chapter in the book is a line from the song, and is filled with stories, essays, anecdotes, quotations and practical advice. So whatever challenges you may be facing today, pick up this book, and know that Help is on the Way.

David Friedman wrote the song, Help is on the Way, in response to the AIDS crisis. First sung by Nancy LaMott, it has since become the theme song for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and has helped raise millions of dollars for charitable and humanitarian causes around the world. He has taken the song and written a book to give inspiration to those who are searching for HELP! Each chapter takes a line from the song and shares with us many stories, quotations, and practical advice on how to approach our problems that so many are facing today.
In today's crisis, we have been hit with so many insurmountable problems that we feel we will never reach the top or have peace again. David’s book shares an approach that everyone should use in their daily lives no matter what their life hands them. Each is a method that is easy to use and if you just step out of your own way, you might find your answer in places that you would have never thought to look.
What did I like? I am a firm believer in the old saying, if you can’t fix it today, just step away till tomorrow. Many times in my life I have been asked how I can remain so calm? I answer that question in the same manner that David has outlined in his book, but just with different words. I know that if I can’t figure out the answer today, I don’t let that problem work on me. I just file it back in a safe place and bring it out at another time. So many times when I have brought it back out, the answer is staring me in the face. I think to myself, why didn’t you see that in the first place. Well, as David so eloquently stated in his book, we just need to have faith that the problem will work itself out. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and some of his hints I have filed away for me to use in the future. It is a great approach that so many today can use.
What will you like? If you are searching for answers to many of the challenging problems that we as a world are facing today, this book will give you help in ways that you never thought of. Looking at problems in a way that does not stress the body and will give you motivational help in facing any type of situation. If you are stressed, you can’t see answers! If you relax and look around many of your answers are right in front of you. If not, they may come from places that you never thought of to look in the first place. Life is so short, take the time to enjoy it! Let David show you ways that you can do just that in this wonderful and enjoyable book about life and its problems.
I couldn’t put the book down. There are just so many beautiful, personal anecdotes that David presents from his life in Broadway! You can really see the levels of inner work he has done and how much more comfortable he is in owning his shadow.
There is a beautiful overlap of spiritual, religious, and just downright humane ideas that really see you through. Pearls of wisdom strung together using the lyrics of his song - this book was indeed the help I was seeking. It came the day I started envisioning what I wanted my book to look like, and throughout the process of reading has been met with countless synchronicities!
The book makes a perfect bedside read - something to deliver good vibes and offer perfect reminders on how to live a more Good Samaritan life :)
Caveat : some of the elements are repetitive when it comes to tips at the end of each section (intention good but redundancy a bit over the top). Also found the constant reintroducing in every single chapter of his partner Shawn the reverend to be quite annoying lol. All that said - nothing this book missed. Gold! Highly recommended for someone that is looking for an inspiring book with great spiritual reflections put into daily practice.
