If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, then I'm as insane as our MC.

I read each of these hoping that this will be the one where the hint of promise finally blooms and overtakes the exhausting and repetitive internal monolog, plot inconsistencies, and lazy deus ex machina, and come away disappointed.

Oh well, I'll probably hope the same thing for the next one too.

Finally forward

He’s back on track and finally advancing. Alex continues to fight above his weight class. Nice pivot at the end. A bit surprised he didn’t learn at least a rudimentary level when being trained at night.

There were some typos. ‘Steed’ when it should have been ‘stead’. Could be cleaner, but it’s not bad.

I tended to skip some of the long passages where the MC was considering his plight. It gets a little verbose and poetic for my taste.

Better than the last book. I will continue to read the series.

Wonderful

Series is one of my all time favorites. This edition saw the MC face more of the extreme challenges that we have come to expect. Alex is once again forced to face death at seemingly every turn. His resolve and determination has helped him overcome all adversity, so far, but as his power grows, so does the animosity of the gods. Mayhem, destruction, and brutal confrontations are just par for the course for our incomparable hero.

One of The best Cultivation series out there

People define series by comparison. Usually I hear “if you like the Cradle Series...or other popular fictions in this genre. Well this series belongs in the category. It is among the best and a must read. Genre defining story. Can’t say enough good things about it.

Another forest trek where nothing gets done.

Most of this book is Alex wandering forests with another caravan, the plot doesn't advance significantly, and I'd just wait for the next one.

The story is starting to go places. MC has finally made it out of his starting city and is doing a small amount of traveling. It feels like he can't sneeze without hitting a sidequest and getting distracted/bogged down, but its still mostly fun and it's nice to see some progression to the plot. So far, I'm still enjoying the books and will keep reading.

Amazing sequel

So glad to see the novel take the direction it did, especially after everything that happened in the last one. Many of the events in book 4 had a good answer in book 5.

Awesome!!!

I don't think I could say enough about this book. It's the fifth book and I wish it was longer but I did definitely enjoy it. I only wish it was longer because I want to know what happens next. I am hoping that the next book comes out sooner than later

Another exciting and fulfilling adventure

This is such an excellent book I am writing my first review. This series gets better and better! It has a fine balance of power versus progression. I look forward to the next one.

I'd like to rate this higher. Underneath it all, there is a decent story but you have to have perseverance to get to it.

The Pros: There is actually a good story here. The world is interesting and the ideas within are well-thought out. The mix of lit-rpg and story is mixed in a less jarring manner than many other similar books. However...

The Cons: the amount of rehashing what happened mere chapters ago is painful. All women in these books fall head over heels for the MC for unknown reasons, with him falling in love with them too but can't be with them because he has to stay a virgin. Honestly, it borders on a possible concerning fantasy of the author. The amount of flowery words is immense and everything is over-worded. Everything is a life-time ago, or many other repeated words/sentences that I might make a drinking game out of them. The previous books were similar but I've persisted in reading them because the story could be good. A good editor would cut out all the scrap and give these books a decent shot at being a better series.

Will I keep reading? Yes, but only when I have the patience to handle the utter word dribble the author keeps using.

Book five

Mistakes: The author tells a good overall story, but I got tired of the flowery prose and the characters almost constant need to hold himself back from giving in to temptation with every girl he meets. We get it! He's a horny teenager.

Plot: It's full of the MC being able to do the impossible.

Characters: He's so good it makes your teeth ache.

I wasn't sure what to expect after the Gotterdammerung that was the previous book, and it stretches credulity that Alex could remain so idealistic after everything he's gone through. Being severed from the rewards/consequences of karma is touched upon, but I really think that Alex really doesn't understand what he'll need to do to become as powerful as he needs to be.

He doesn't need to turn into an evil asshole to get there, but if he hares off after every damsel in distress that he encounters he'll never get'er done. Spoilers follow.

After everything those f-ing gods put me through, I would have likely wiped out the city if I had the chance to take the biggest asshole out. Alex of course wouldn't, and doesn't. He has shown repeatedly that he doesn't value his own life, so of course allowing massive threats to his existence to live is just how he rolls.

It is said over and over that strength is EVERYTHING is this wold, ergo giving up power because you are too soft-hearted to stick it to beings who have repeatedly tried to erase you from the cosmos is a fatally flawed strategy. Somehow he's ruthless enough to rip peoples' souls out, but to not (really) kill the gods (who are more of a threat to him and his than any mortal) when he has the chance smacks of hypocrisy, or something similar.

WiFu has given him terrible guidance from the word "go" so taking his advice at this point doesn't seem rational. Alex is a masochist of the highest degree, and that's the only reason I can see for his choices. At this point I would fuck off to my private dimension (now that he has one) and only come out to kill stuff so I could level it up. I also don't know what kind of supposed 18-or-so year old guy he's supposed to be, as he should be laser-focused on making it to Silver so that he can put out for some of these women who keep throwing themselves at him.

Finally: five books in and he's still in Bronze? I can't read 20+ more of these (even if the author could/would write them) so something has to change in pacing. Phoenix Academy better just be a chapter or two in the next book.

Alert

First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Second, I am not a bot...at least I don’t think I am. Yes this is copy pasta (just learned that term, so fun!) simply because I feel like any book I read deserves acknowledgement but at the same time my feelings on reviews conflict with the normal review process.

I enjoyed this book, so my goal is to promote it and help the author. If you are a potential reader, just stop reading now and take the above as all you need to know. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. It is my opinion that Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. Or not if you don’t think this book is for you. That choice is all yours and the beauty of art appreciation. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

If you are a member of the IAK Guild (thanks, Jason) or part of the review police, feel free to criticize me and challenge my philosophy on reviewing art. I think we all love a good debate. The forums are open and I welcome your comments. I was wrong in my previous request to get you to stop. Your blatant disregard for that request has led to some fun discussions. Growth is important for us all.

Cheers

Solid Story with just some minor editing issues

Another good addition to the series. I really only have two issues with this book. The first is that it could use a little polishing in the editing department. There were a couple of places where entire passages seemed to have been doubled up. And it took me out of the story for a minute to sort out why we were rehashing things like that. The second is a story issue and if you have read the other four books its not a spoiler. I'm not a fan of the way the main character had such strong feelings for the princess but then as soon as they were separated he seemed to forget about her. Then he spent this book pining after her while having a new girl on the hook. It makes it feel like he is just wishy washy and that his feeling for the new girl aren't really genuine. Having said that I have enjoyed the whole series and look forward to another installment.

OMG, loved this book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Alex continues to grow from the constant crucible of battle. Every progression is hard earned, and well deserved.

I also was so happy to not have to read too much about Hao Chan. I really hate the fact that she hasn’t gone through the sufferings Alex has gone through, but somehow, is magically being able to power level like Alex. I guess I really hate the way the author keeps insinuating that she and Alex might be equal in power and potential . She is not. At least, she shouldn’t be.

Also, I would prefer literally any of the other female characters Alex has met, over her.

Anyway, enough of my rant. This book was awesome!!!! (More so without Hao chan)

Not my favorite

Installment, but okay. There was a little too much of the end of the previous book. I feel like in the first four books, obviously there was some variance in power levels, but in this one it felt like it was all over the place. And so many times where Alex is crying, fearful, or bashful it was like reading about a fifteen year old boy going through puberty. Honestly I was embarrassed for him. It’s like the author can’t decide if he wants an OPMC or not so he keeps waffling. I still like the series and will pick up the next book, but this was certainly the weakest book so far.

Fabulous says it all

This is just fab from beginning to end. Fast paced and free flowing even with the full on descriptions of the world, cultivating & battles it just reads so well. The worst part about noting it’s the new one so early is having to wait for the next.

Also the small Easter egg 3/4(??) of the way through left me laughing with delight.

Keep up the great work MHJ and release the next one soon please..

Enjoy 😁

Amazing Story

M.H. Johnson has done an amazing job as per usual to create a gripping story. The action sequences were so well written and combined with the amazing tempo of the story I could hardly put the book down. From beginning to end I was constantly kept on the edge of my seat wondering if Alex’s was going to make it or would drown in the river. The problem I have is that I am going to have to wait for the next book to come out.

Great Book, Great Action, Great Series

This latest book in the series stuffs so much breathless action between its pages that you find yourself cascading from one amazing moment to another. For adventure or cultivation fans this series is the epitome of all you could ask for. It has action, magic, romance, cultivation, drama, and character growth in spades.

Extremely recommended (15+) for everyone, with the strongest advice to begin at book one for best results.

non stop action

Since book 7 came out I’ve been rereading the series and I live the action just as much the second go round. My only complaint is Alexis’s love life. I get that he’s not allowed to make love to anyone but jeez does he fall in love every book. He has way more important things to focus on in my opinion.

Great read

This is one of my favorite series that I always devour as soon as I get the notice for the next book. Alex grows in different ways than I had initially hoped, but he's poised for an even bigger step next book. Bring it on.

A must read series.

For a while there I was afraid that book number five wasn’t going to come. I was extremely excited to see this book pop up in my Kindle app. This is one of those book series that I hope goes to 20 books at a minimum. My hats off to you as the author.

Good book

Another wild ride with more great fights and development. Nice to see less involvement from the gods as that was getting old. Disappointed there wasn't more with his old friends from book 1 but hopefully in the next book.
