Magical Husbandry #1

An Impractical Guide to Satyr Charming

Rate this book
With her magic stolen, Ivy Bennett is a witch doomed to die. But she isn’t giving up without a fight. One ritual could restore her power, all she needs is a little elbow grease and an abandoned house in the woods. Unfortunately, the home’s current resident -an arrogant satyr named Finn- will not tolerate a witch in his territory. Ivy will be damned if the goat-legged jerk gets in her way. If only he wasn’t as sexy as he is infuriating. Charming a satyr isn't at the top of Ivy's do-to-list, but it's either come to a truce with the insufferable male or knock on death’s door.

After witnessing the slaughter of his herd, Finn’s sole purpose is to protect his brother and his lands from deadly witches. But when one moves in, his fury rises. While the need to drive the witch away is strong, his desire for her is stronger. Soon he finds himself wanting the lovely, stubborn female more than hating her. But keeping Ivy as his own would forfeit everything he’s held sacred. And now her presence has attracted something in the forest… something that may destroy them all.

I enjoyed this a surprising amount, given how EH I can be about fantasy reads. I'm very particular about what I like in the fantasy genre.

AIGtSC is a slow starter, but it's full of humor and has enough plot to make the wait and build worth it while these two stubbornly wage war. Admittedly, some of the big plot points were predictable early on, but that didn't make them any less enjoyable to read.

OH!

Big Props for a heroine over the age of 40 who doesn't mention a diet, carbs, or hating her body even once in the story. Ivy is delightfully plump and an unrepentant cheese lover. My kind of gal.

I will definitely check out the future books about the Bennett siblings.

This was a cute read with an enemies to lovers vibe because of forced proximity. Ivy was a sassy but anxious AF 42 year old witch that was desperate to get her powers back. Finn was a shit-stirrer satyr with an understandable aversion to witches and a protective streak. They had the roughest of rough starts but eventually crashed into their happy ever after. I liked that Ivy wasn’t just defined by her anxiety disorder. Don’t get me wrong. Anxiety is overwhelming and can rule someone’s life if it’s not treated. But it’s nice to have some variety in the characters I see that have anxiety disorders.

Spice: 2/5

Triggers: panic attacks, horror themes, discussion of human & humanoid sacrifice and torture, murder (off page), death, creature attack, violence (not a lot), gore, pus

This book was such a delightful surprise. I don’t dip my toes into paranormal romance often, but this story made me want to add all of Cynthia Diamond’s books to my TBR.

Ivy is a cottage witch who has had her powers stolen from her and is now fading. Finn and Callum are satyrs with healthy fear of witches who happen to live in the basement of the house Ivy just purchased. Ivy needs to revive the house’s magic if she hopes to save herself. Finn just wants her gone in order to protect his brother. That is, until he doesn’t want her gone at all.

Fantastic characters, entertaining plot, and lots of magic make this book a must-read.

Ivy groaned, her teeth clenching hard enough to crack.

Crap, was that a damn pan flute?

Another squeal, one that sent needles right into her eardrums.

Yup. It was a pan flute.

And judging by the piercing melody he kept botching, Finn had no idea how to play one.

Ivy bristled. “Right on time,” she grumbled, tucking her blankets back into place.

And to think she was feeling horny for him only a few seconds ago. This concert was what she deserved for being suckered in by his pretty face and sad eyes.

“Asshole!” she shouted at the door, her head pounding with each clomp-clomp-clomp of Finn’s parade.

There was a sharp bang. The door bowed and Ivy almost leaped out of her skin, expecting an aggressive break-in. But the shrill high-pitched crooning resumed, moving back and forth outside her door. Ivy looked to the heavens for help. None came, which didn’t surprise her. She grabbed her robe from the foot of her bed, tossing it on before knotting her long hair on top of her head.

“Well, might as well get this confrontation over with,” she muttered.

Finn skipped up and down the hall like some nightmarish version of Fantasia, his horns and hooves outlined in moonlight. Spittle flew from his lips as he blew over his flute, his eyes squished tight in concentration.

Skip skip, tweet! Skip skip, toot toot!

“Really?” Ivy asked as he did a loop around her. “You’re really doing this?”

He paused in mid frolic to sweep a low bow. “Practicing one’s craft is never a waste.”

“I have earplugs!” she shouted.

“Then my musical escapades shouldn’t be an issue,” Finn replied.

Skip skip tweet tootie toot toot toot!

Ivy pinched her forehead as it started to throb. “I’m serious! This is a waste of time!”

"So why the complaints?”

He puffed out a particularly sour note right in her face. Strands of her hair blew back from the force of his breath.

Ivy stomped back to her room, retrieving her earplugs from her nightstand. She returned, blocking Finn’s path to make a show of putting them in.

“See? Earplugs! I can’t hear you! You can’t bother me now!”

He smiled, the brush of his tail flicking her chin as he passed. Ivy swatted it, sputtering as the bristles tickled her lips. Whatever angst he was experiencing earlier was gone, replaced with an arrogant grin and shrieking flute.

“I told you, this was war,” Finn sang, his voice muffled by the orange foam expanding in her ears.

“I didn’t want this war!”

“You should have thought of that before you decided to stay, witching!”

Her face itched, sleep clinging to her eyelids despite the insistent tooting tearing through her earplugs. Another sleepless night. Three in a row now thanks to this bastard.

Skip skip, toot toot, squeeeeeal!

“I’m not leaving!” she screeched. “Spite is my motivator! Spite puts me in motion! I eat spite for breakfast!”

Ready for hail the horny goat man or will you be like Ivy and not want to deal? ;)
I'm so excited to release this new trilogy and explore this new world! I hope you all enjoy too!

Her magic stolen, Ivy Bennett is a witch doomed to die unless she goes to an isolated cabin to perform a ritual. Standing in the empty room of the old cabin in the woods, Ivy dove out of the way as a huge chandelier crashed down where she had been standing. Just an accident; it couldn’t be an omen. The hair on her neck prickled as she felt eyes on her, yet there was nothing visible. Looking up the stairs, she vaguely saw something tall and broad with horns… ghosts don’t have horns, do they? It growled and ran toward her, but her magic failed to put a shield around her and she ran. It came after her, grabbing at her shoulder with sharp claws. She made it outside and tried to draw protective runes on the ground, even without the magic to invoke them. She kept doubting herself, ready to give up and accept the death that was coming for her. But the invisible thing didn’t follow her and she defiantly screamed that she would be back. She had to, or she would die.

Callum joined Finn to see what the noise was all about. With their herd having been slaughtered by witches, Finn will protect his older brother and their land. Callum was fearful that Finn had taken on a witch, terrified of the thought of dark magic being used against them. But Finn reassured him the woman had not used magic against him. As they tore open her boxes to take their plunder, he found the witch’s spell book! When his brother went to make them stew, he grabbed the book and ran outside, throwing it in a pond. That woman was a harmless human, not a witch. She had no magic. But why was he afraid?

This is a good start to what seems to be a fascinating story line. Finn is attracted to Ivy from the start. Not finding the evil he sensed in the other witches he had dealt with, he assumed she was not a witch. But when her presence brings danger, will they work together to defeat it? And what book did he throw away… because Ivy desperately needs the spell ritual to regain her magic and save her life?

This story was so much fun to read! Between Finn’s giant ego and sassy remarks and Ivy’s snarky and lust-filled thoughts, I was kept thoroughly entertained wondering just when they were going to give in and decide that hating one another was just the flip side of the coin to loving one another! I loved that there was also a bigger storyline going on that will be continued in the other books. I loved the HEA in this book and can’t wait to read following books to find out what happens next!

All Hail Horny Goatboys!

This book is a lovely romp in the woods (literally) and an introduction into a very witchy world. Finn and Ivy make a great pair and it is hilarious to see them interact. Who knew old houses could be so demanding? This book has a lot of laughs, but it is also a good depiction of dealing with anxiety and showing how it affects people differently. I am excited to learn more about the Bennet family and look forward to diving into other stories from this world. More please!

I was lucky to be an Advanced Copy Reader for this book so my review is early 😁 I loved it! Saucy, bawdy, funny and tender. The main character Ivy is very relatable with both her age (42) and her struggles with mental health. Throw in a sexy satyr and that adorable familiar and what more can you ask for? You'll GET a lot more but I'm not spoiling anything! Very much looking forward to this series, and of course more of the Wyrd Love series!

An interesting book

this is not really my kind of book. But I decided to read because it sounded good
and I was right it is good. This romance between a Seder and a satyr
and a witch I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I’m happy to recommend it.

“Things were good today. Maybe they would be good tomorrow too. If Finn was around, she had hope. And that was an amazing feeling.”

First read of 2022 happened in two sittings in less than 24 hours because I could NOT put this book down.

Think Naughty Narnia. I said what I said.

Think epic banter.
Oh the banter. I laughed out loud and smiled a ton. Finn is a satyr who is overly confident and sarcastic and it’s delightful. The heroine is over 40, struggling with an anxiety disorder, oh, and a witch who had her powers stolen from her.

Sentient house. Sentient magical naughty house.
Bonkers story (in the BEST way) with a true enemies to more (none of that “rough meet cute to friends to lovers”… this story boasted a significant portion of the book with the hero and heroine at odds- interspersed with delicious chemistry and tension and all the things readers love…).

The author has written a larger than life creative and unique world- I can truthfully say that I have never read anything like it. It’s hard to accurately write a review because there is much going on and I just say- go- read it. I tend to stick to fluffier/mild reads and this brought darkness and magic, grief and pain but in very doable interludes. Angst done well. All this being said- I don’t want to dissuade the romance readers as this is at its core- truly an extremely romantic tale. All the swooning. It looks like book 2 is set to release year and I cannot wait to read more.

“Something inside him unfurled, releasing emotion he had never felt the likes of before. It filled his heart, flowing through his every breath. Love. By Dionysus he loved her. She was his. And he belonged to her.”

Ivy (h) inherits an ancient mansion tucked deep in the wood and expects a refuge, a place to hide away and lick her wounds after losing her magical powers. But the mansion, with its hidden past and arcane secrets, is anything but serene. Almost immediately, Ivy's quiet retreat is shattered by a falling chandelier and the presence of two mysterious satyrs, Finn (H) and Callum, who claim the mansion as their own. As Ivy navigates life with her new, mischievous roommates, she discovers that the mansion is a nexus of magical power that many dark forces desire to control. Thrust into the role of protector, Ivy must reawaken the mansion's dormant magic and forge alliances with beings from the magical world to defend her new home. Ivy's relationship with Finn moves from adversarial to romantic, and things heat up between the two. As threats mount, Ivy, Finn, and Callum are not just fighting for her sanctuary but also for a chance to regain her lost powers. The cover drew and title drew me in, so I didn't read the description - my fail, since I'm just not a big fan of witches/magic (doesn’t affect rating since it was clearly in description). Hot and steamy monster romance with plenty of magic, unexpected friendships, and claiming one's destiny.

I'm so glad I made time to read this book, finally! I won a copy from a GR giveaway and it promptly kept getting pushed to the back burner, until several bookstagrammers I follow kept mentioning how much they enjoyed it, so I made a point to push it to the front of the queue. And it did not disappoint!

Ivy is a cottage witch who's lost her magic, and is reviving an old mansion in the woods in an effort to restore her powers. Finn and his brother Callum, are satyrs who've been squatting in the abandoned mansion for decades and have a deep-seated mistrust of all witches on principle (and rightfully so, we later learn). And thus starts a beautiful enemies-to-lovers tale that was so fun to read.

The supporting cast of characters--Ivy's twin brother Rowan, her aunts, the house itself--added fun color to the story, and seeded some fun for the next 2 books, which I can't wait for now! The world building is a lot of fun and I enjoyed that it was based in a modern day, very real universe.

I just read the cutest freaking book!!!

Um, I just read the cutest gods damn book and I am now obsessed.

These characters are so loving and genuine and sweet!

First and foremost, I loved this book. If you are a fan of monster romance and like fae, cryptids, shifters etc. you will like this book. Ivy is a middle aged plus sized sexy ass cottage witch who had her powers stolen and is going for a hail mary to get them back. Finn is a disgustingly sexy satyr who lives in the cottage that Ivy just purchased, with his brother. They have both been there for a long long long time and are a little out of touch. They hate witches and are doing everything in their power to force her out. Much hilarity and prankiness ensues.

Their attraction to one another was instantaneous, but just because you want to touch someone in the pants doesn't mean you actually like them or care about their feelings or how good they smell, or how beautiful their eyes are, or how their laughter ignites your whole body, or how soft they feel when you nuzzle up to them, right? RIGHT?!

Read this cute ass book. Just do it.

how you just made this a sequel needed…

Dude. This was adorable. Spice was nice. The story was fun. Writing was healthy and fun. And somehow. You just turned this into an obvious sequel needed. Actually. I guess at least 3 books. Can we please get the gargoyle first? Cause like. I’m excited hard core for that.
The plot was interesting, characters enchanting. It reads a bit like how a tv show would go. A little faster paced but still solid and absolutely worth a read. Now I’d like a special edition of this made somewhere it’s legit one of those books I’d proudly display. Super fun.

Wow! I loved this book. I am honestly really excited for future books in the series. Cynthia Diamond did a really good job balancing incredible worldbuilding with a cute enemies to lovers romance and comedy! This book was funny and the characters were very genuine. The representation of mental illness hits close to home, and I think it really enhanced the story.

This book ended up being pretty fun. I liked that the characters trauma connected them and the twist at the end. I think the writing could be improved, the satyrs have been alone in this house forever but then use the same jargon as the witch sometimes? Just small things like that. It was overall a funny and charming book.

Fun, steamy and enjoyable read.

This was a delightful read; with complex and interesting characters, an engaging storyline, plenty of humor, and some serious steam. Took a moment to get into, but the story then picked up and really pulled you in. Ended up being a very quick read!

I loved that the main character isn’t 20 and doesn’t spend half the book lamenting over a diet or her thighs. She’s relatable, and funny and I deeply appreciated the discussion around anxiety. Looking forward to the next two in this series.

I received this book for free through Goodreads giveaways. My opinions are my own.

I don't normally read paranormal romance, but when I do they're by Cynthia Diamond. I love satyrs, witches and love stories and this book did not disappoint. This was a super fun read and a great break from reality. I read it at the gym and constantly was able to work out much longer than I had meant to. This was definitely a "just one more page/ chapter," book. Do yourself a favor and have fun with Ivy and Finn. This book is charming!

I love the romance tropes!

I really enjoyed reading this. This not only felt like a great paranormal romance, but it felt like a romcom with the way the leads fought with one another before falling in love. One of the things I love in all of Cynthia's books is the moment one of the main characters goes from being really turned on one moment, and then really angry the next. I love these characters and can't wait to revisit them in the following books.
