This actually had a lot of potential considering everything that happens over the course of the story.
But that ending? I can't believe I wasted two days of my life reading this.
I still feel angry just thinking about it 🤩

Note: this is not manga, strictly speaking, since it was originally published in Korean.
The story starts with Aristia la Monique, consort to the emperor, being executed for treason. But it doesn't end there*. After a lengthy flashback which shows how things came to this pass for her, we find that we are in a time slip story where Aristia returns to being ten years old, with all the memories of her previous life--up until its gruesome end--intact.
* otherwise this would have been five pages long.
First of all, a word of warning: despite the beautiful shoujo art, and nothing being presented explicitly, The Abandoned Empress completely justifies its "Older Teen" rating. I had a hard time getting through the first half of the book because of how very unrelentingly grim it was. Aristia is never treated kindly, has no friends and no one to love her. She betrays because she has always been betrayed. There's dubcon, Aristia being forced to kowtow and lick the boots of the emperor, and two (CW: violence toward women) .
One thing that's unusual about this story--this isn't much of a spoiler, but if you are especially sensitive to that, skip this paragraph--is that along with being a time slip story, this is also an isekai (or whatever that might be called in Korean). The title of the story has to do with Aristia's position as a future empress being usurped by a Korean girl who came from Earth.
This really got my attention in its second half. The tone doesn't take a 180, necessarily, but it's pretty darn close. After Aristia makes a decision regarding the goddess of this world's fate for her, she goes about changing her life. This includes having an affectionate relationship with her father, training in the sword, and gaining her first friend (who . heh). Perhaps most importantly for her continued survival, she wants nothing to do with the emperor, who at this point in time is the heir to the throne since his father is still alive.
There's something that makes reincarnation and/or time-slip stories appealing to me. In part it's the ordinary thing of imagining how one's life might be if they made different, better decisions. Already Aristia's life is happier because of how she treats those around her, and although self-preservation is an obvious motive, things become better for them, too.
Presentation-wise this book is lovely. The cover is absolutely gorgeous, with silver floral highlights along the borders of the central illustration. The interior art is quite good too, for the most part, striking and atmospheric. Sometimes it seems to use computerized flair to cover up simple layouts and drawings, but that flair is quite good in itself, so I can't complain too much. The whole book is in full color, justifying its $20 price tag.
The translation is mucky at times. The formal language of the nobility has lines like "I was thinking about how much I'd like to spend cherishable time with my loving wife." Blargh... I'd help if they paid me. :D
I knew nothing about this before my partner got it in the mail from RightStuf. He's two for two this year. Good going, J! I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes, though the first half of this volume flavors that anticipation with not a little anxiety for our heroine.

I still remember the frustration I got from this book/manhwa, I just love Carsein.
Girl Tia really chose the one who r*ped, abuse, murdered or basically the one who ruined her in her past life. y'all can tell me that this version of Ruve is different from the past and had so much character development but that doesn't change the fact that Tia was emotionally and was physically abused by him, just imagine the trauma she'd been through just to end up with him. again.
I would've like it better if she ends up with Allen or Carsein and just be friends with Ruve (if thats possible.)
UPDATE: Tia really chose the most basic man when she had better options.

After trying to kill the emperor, Aristia meets her end at the blade of the guillotine. A tragic fate for one who was supposed to marry him until a Japanese girl showed up and usurped her place. So when she winds up back in the body of her ten-year-old self, years before her execution, she’s got plans to make a few changes around here…
Let’s clear the most obvious problem from our plates first - this premise is clearly Xerox’d from any number of villainess revenge stories that are popular in light novels right now. From the suitors in waiting to the ‘I am super clever because of foreknowledge’ angle, precious little is new in this book.
Does that mean it can’t be good? Of course not, and thankfully this is a pretty decent facsimile, helped by the fact that this is a print version of a Webtoon from Korea. Nothing wrong with that though - indeed, the art is decent and, more importantly, it’s 250 pages of full colour that adds some real pop to it.
(If anything it makes me hopeful that we’ll see a print release of the incredibly gay and incredibly bawdy Mage & Demon Queen at some point)
What I especially like about this story is that they take a lot of time before going back to Aristia’s past. Many similar stories blow past these opening proceedings within a couple of pages, but this one devotes roughly a hundred pages detailing the downfall of Aristia.
It consequently generates a lot of sympathy for Aristia, who literally does nothing wrong and devotes her entire life to being the perfect partner for Ruve, the privileged little twerp who takes the throne. He’s the perfect boo-hiss villain for the section, although be well aware that he basically commits a sexual assault at one point (it’s a thin line and the narrative dances it very precariously).
And when Jieun, our isekai insert girl, turns out to be less pure than expected, it’s a whole other kettle of fish. It’s a clever wrinkle that she starts off very nice, but slowly warps over time out of misplaced jealousy and spite. There’s an interesting idea behind the story that fate has gone completely haywire and the time reversal is there to fix it.
Of course, that’s not before Aristia has a shouting match with god and finds out that this is because of a very oddly complicated plan for a diety and she decides to make her own fate for herself. Which, hey, good call because the last one didn’t work so hot and finding out that your free will was totally jerked around would make anybody mad.
And then the suitors and pretty boys start showing up and things are a lot lighter post-guillotine and that’s, well, that’s okay. The first part is dour and miserable and a non-stop tragedy. It can be a little much, but it’s supposed to be - Aristia has an entirely compelling and believable motivation to change her life. I especially liked the way she started to bond with her dad now that she had the chance.
So, is this different enough from similar books? Well, maybe. I could read ahead, but will wait for subsequent volumes to see what happens - there is every danger that they’ll try to reform Ruve, which is probably going to leave a bad taste in my mouth since it’s one thing to erase an act and a whole other to suggest the intent was never there. That’s my biggest cautionary note, certainly.
Still, I had a good time; I like the heroine rather a lot, honestly, as she really underwent a change, and her own behaviour was never particularly villainous, she was just utterly pitiable and backed into a corner by worse people. It’s nice that it wasn’t all ‘learn a lesson’ and more ‘you get a do over because you did good but life screwed you’.
There’s definitely a lot left to explore with this setting and while reading something like this in book form that was designed for an online presence can be tough - the pages go right to left, but are read left to right, plus the ‘posting schedule’ nature of an online property can make the story feel choppy - it isn’t without its charms.
3.5 stars - no rounding based on some reservations, but I’d say the setting and copied elements are worth 3 stars and Aristia herself is worth a 4. Hopefully they come together a bit higher up next time.

The ending...the damn ENDING.

As addictive and frustrating as watching a K-drama but without those pesky real live people, it's a webtoon! And I for one applaud them getting book-length releases, because that's really how I prefer to do my reading. This one is an entry into the increasingly saturated subgenre of isekai known (in Japanese) as the "yarinaoshi loop," where a character dies, usually horribly and unfairly, and is taken back in time to start again in hopes of evading a terrible death. Aristia has it nearly as bad as Violette from I Swear I Won't Bother You Agan: mistreated by her fiance and goaded to the point where she has no recourse but to defend herself, she's then sent to the tender mercies of Madame Guillotine, because of course the jerk is the emperor. Furious with both fate and herself for ever falling in love with the guy, she wishes she could do it all over...and lo, she can.
Of course, that's because the god whose prophecy got her into this mess in the first place screwed up. They're remarkably unfazed by a mistake that quite literally ruined lives, but when Aristia announces that she's through with uncaring gods, she is granted a bit of a boon to use in her attempts to evade her fate. It's both a measure of how uncaring the god is and how smart and determined Aristia is that she takes that and immediately begins to do her best. She was hard to keep down the first time around, maintaining her poise and dignity until Emperor Ass pushed her too far; now she stands to be nigh unstoppable because she knows how bad it can get.
Naturally there are three other handsome young men she could potentially end up with running around, and of course she's going to use her knowledge of the future to put herself ahead of the game. The art is full-color and very pretty, even if the costumes are a very strange pastiche of many centuries: adult women's clothing incorporates fashions from the Tudor years up through the Victorian, while children all wear clothing from the 1860s. But most engaging is the story. After what Aristia was put through, I desperately want her to succeed and be happy...and if she brings down that absolute nightmare of a human being of an emperor? That would be the happiest ending of all.

I am really enjoying this one so far. I ABSOLUTELY ABHORE the Emperor, but I think you are supposed to. I'm really liking the twist that is presented in this volume, and it makes me want to continue the story a lot. The full color pages add a lot to this particular story, and I can't wait to see what happens! A solid start to what I think will be an amazing series.

So it’s that time, finally… the time to pick up the infamous webtoon known as The Abandoned Empress! You know, I really struggled over whether I should read this or not. If you’re familiar with the webtoon world, then you’d know that The Abandoned Empress is rumored to be no less than a trashy story, demeaning to all women by the way the main character was treated.
Spoilers about future volumes below—
From what I’ve heard, (and again, beware of spoilers) the female lead ends up with the same shithead who killed her child in her previous life, her dad and eventually her too. She was reborn for a reason! To enact revenge on this same piece of trash! But what does she do instead? She ENDS UP WITH HIM AGAIN! I mean, that’s what I’ve heard. And I hold no doubt that that is what actually happens. So why am I reading this when I know it’s shit? Well, you’ve asked a very good question. In all honestly, I just wanted to see what all the talk was about, and maybe I just felt like reading a trashy story. Then you may also ask, since you’ve admitted that this is trashy, why are you rating this volume four stars and not one? Again, good question. I am going into this trying my best to pretend that I don’t know how the story ends, even though I obviously do. Considering that, I will rate each individual volume honestly, based off of what I currently think it deserves. So far? I’d say this volume suggests the story has potential, seeing as the female lead does not want anything to do with the male lead again. I know that’s not how it will end, but had I been reading this not knowing that, this is what my rating will be, so I will leave it that way for now. What I rate the last volume does will not have anything to do with this rating.

And so, what is the story actually about? Artistia (Tia) la Monique was assumed to be a child of prophecy, born to be the empress to the crown prince of the empire. When it is revealed that she is not the child of the prophecy, she is dethroned to an imperial consort. The prince marries the true prophesied maiden who takes her place as empress. Ever since she’d been betrothed to the prince, he treated her with no respect, and continued to look down on her. Out of jealousy, I assume. Even when she was empress, he never acknowledged her. After she was dethroned, she still did all the work of the empress due to the incompetence of the current empress. Even when she did nothing, the male lead physically abused her if she so much as looked in the empress’s direction. He is a true asshole. But you know what else he does? He rapes her. Yeah, you heard me right. A man who is supposed to not be attracted to her, and who literally abuses her out of hatred of her, rapes her despite having another women as his equal. HE RAPES HER! THIS DISGUSTING PIECE OF SHIT, WHO DETHRONES HER AS EMPRESS, STILL HAS SOME NERVE TO LAY HIS HANDS ON HER, WHETHER IT BE THROUGH FORCEFUL SEX OR ABUSE! And guess what, of course the asshole didn’t care to use protection, because he knocks her up. What does he tell her after he finds out she is pregnant? That her child will never be considered an heir to the throne, and only the empress’ children belong to the line of succession. As if she cares to have that kind of power, BUT WHAT INSOLENCE COMING FROM THE ASSHAT WHO RAPED HER IN THE FIRST PLACE! Believe me, I am not one to swear that often, but this scum truly deserves to be called the worst of names. What’s worse is that, due to this treatment, the female lead does not believe that she is someone of any value, and her self confidence is shattered at being treated that way by someone she apparently loves. Loves him for what I don’t know. But yeah, this dumb bit** loves him despite the way he treats her.
Anyway, she’s pregnant. The emperor and her at some point hold a conversation, I don’t remember about what, but she was about to faint due to fatigue from the pregnancy, and almost falls. The emperors catches her, flustered that she almost got hurt. I mean… what? EXCUSE ME??? So the asshole apparently worried about her. Well you’re funny if you think I’d change my mind about him just because he caught her on instinct. Rather, I hate him even more for what he does right after! The empress walks in on them and misunderstands, and he shoves Tia away to go after her. She trips and takes a bad fall, causing her to lose her child… REALLY? REALLY??? COULD IT GET ANY WORSE? You asked a great question because THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS! He notices and summons for a court physician—I don’t care! I still hate his guts! SO MUCH! So she ends up losing her child, and later on finds out that the empress is now with child. Of course, because the ugly bonehead can’t keep his cock to himself clearly. She falls into a depression, and her father, out of worry for her, expresses his true feelings towards her. That he regrets ever bringing her to the palace, and will bring her home to live back with him. This brightens her spirits. The fact that her cold-hearted father, who was only loyal to the emperor, put her first and had loved her all along. She was so overjoyed she didn’t even care anymore about everything that the crown prince (or emperor in current time I guess) did to her.
But the empress is ambushed, and loses her child in the process. Who gets blamed? Her family. More specifically; her father. Despite her begging for mercy, her father, the only person she has left, is unjustly killed to pay for a crime he didn’t even commit. She becomes infuriated, and in a moment of craziness, stabs the emperor. I mean… my QUEEN. YOUR MAJESTY! I DID NOT REALIZE YOU HAD IT IN YOU, BUT NEVER HAVE I LOVED YOU MORE DURING MY ONE HOUR READING THIS VOLUME! At this moment, she was a true queen. No one can convince me otherwise. Even if she is executed for her attempt, I don’t care. SHE STILL GOT HIM TO FEEL SOME OF THE PAIN HE SUBJECTED HER TO ALL HER LIFE. If only he died… but he doesn’t, and she does, at his hands. We all know that already, since it was the first scene in the volume.
But so she is given a second chance. She goes back in time 7 years ago, to when she was 10 years old. Yes, you’re right, she was 17 in the main story. Meaning, the disgusting emperor WAS ABUSING AND PREYING ON A MINOR THE WHOLE TIME! I have never hated a character more than this, at least within the last year. But anyway, the first thing she does is check that her father is alive. AW. Despite being educated on manners and proper etiquette and all that, and storms out in her pajamas to the training field and hugs her cold-hearted father, yelling out papa! He is flabbergasted, to say the least, and so are the rest of the knights and maids who laid witness to this event in history. Her father becomes worried at her behavior, and we found out that he… loves being called papa! How adorable!! And we also found out that he was a super hot dude… not that he wasn’t super hot during the main story but still. Please excuse that comment. ANYWAY, after that he’d grimace if she called him father like she usually did, so she started permanently calling him papa.
She is summoned to the palace because apparently a prophecy granted her a divine name, which somehow makes her a threat to the imperial family I guess. She doesn’t feign ignorance, and rather advises the current emperor (the douchebag’s father) of a current political and economical issue, and her proposal is enacted. I don’t want to go into further detail because it would take too long, but if you read the volume you know what I’m talking about. She also reveals to the emperor that she does not desire to be empress, even though they believe she is the child of a different prophecy, the shitty one that started this whole thing. They say she will be his fiancé in name for now, and they will end their engagement later. This was all at her suggestion I believe. What a smart girl! I wish her past self was this smart too.
So much happens in this volume, because I’m not done talking yet. She meets the chancellor’s genius second son, who becomes infatuated with her and proposes to her at first meeting. Yes, a 13-year-old proposes to a 10-year-old. You are not imagining things. Her possessive father (HAHAHA) hears this and disapproves immediately! He announces that he needs to learn to be good with a sword and not just his brain if he wants to go anywhere near his daughter, and only as a friend at that. The chancellor’s son takes on the challenge because he really wants to marry—I mean become friends with our female lead. How cute, HAHAHA. Of course, I’ll take anyone over the dipshit crown prince. I’ve run out of names to call him at this point.

From what I’ve heard, (and again, beware of spoilers) the female lead ends up with the same shithead who killed her child in her previous life, her dad and eventually her too. She was reborn for a reason! To enact revenge on this same piece of trash! But what does she do instead? She ENDS UP WITH HIM AGAIN! I mean, that’s what I’ve heard. And I hold no doubt that that is what actually happens. So why am I reading this when I know it’s shit? Well, you’ve asked a very good question. In all honestly, I just wanted to see what all the talk was about, and maybe I just felt like reading a trashy story. Then you may also ask, since you’ve admitted that this is trashy, why are you rating this volume four stars and not one? Again, good question. I am going into this trying my best to pretend that I don’t know how the story ends, even though I obviously do. Considering that, I will rate each individual volume honestly, based off of what I currently think it deserves. So far? I’d say this volume suggests the story has potential, seeing as the female lead does not want anything to do with the male lead again. I know that’s not how it will end, but had I been reading this not knowing that, this is what my rating will be, so I will leave it that way for now. What I rate the last volume does will not have anything to do with this rating.

And so, what is the story actually about? Artistia (Tia) la Monique was assumed to be a child of prophecy, born to be the empress to the crown prince of the empire. When it is revealed that she is not the child of the prophecy, she is dethroned to an imperial consort. The prince marries the true prophesied maiden who takes her place as empress. Ever since she’d been betrothed to the prince, he treated her with no respect, and continued to look down on her. Out of jealousy, I assume. Even when she was empress, he never acknowledged her. After she was dethroned, she still did all the work of the empress due to the incompetence of the current empress. Even when she did nothing, the male lead physically abused her if she so much as looked in the empress’s direction. He is a true asshole. But you know what else he does? He rapes her. Yeah, you heard me right. A man who is supposed to not be attracted to her, and who literally abuses her out of hatred of her, rapes her despite having another women as his equal. HE RAPES HER! THIS DISGUSTING PIECE OF SHIT, WHO DETHRONES HER AS EMPRESS, STILL HAS SOME NERVE TO LAY HIS HANDS ON HER, WHETHER IT BE THROUGH FORCEFUL SEX OR ABUSE! And guess what, of course the asshole didn’t care to use protection, because he knocks her up. What does he tell her after he finds out she is pregnant? That her child will never be considered an heir to the throne, and only the empress’ children belong to the line of succession. As if she cares to have that kind of power, BUT WHAT INSOLENCE COMING FROM THE ASSHAT WHO RAPED HER IN THE FIRST PLACE! Believe me, I am not one to swear that often, but this scum truly deserves to be called the worst of names. What’s worse is that, due to this treatment, the female lead does not believe that she is someone of any value, and her self confidence is shattered at being treated that way by someone she apparently loves. Loves him for what I don’t know. But yeah, this dumb bit** loves him despite the way he treats her.
Anyway, she’s pregnant. The emperor and her at some point hold a conversation, I don’t remember about what, but she was about to faint due to fatigue from the pregnancy, and almost falls. The emperors catches her, flustered that she almost got hurt. I mean… what? EXCUSE ME??? So the asshole apparently worried about her. Well you’re funny if you think I’d change my mind about him just because he caught her on instinct. Rather, I hate him even more for what he does right after! The empress walks in on them and misunderstands, and he shoves Tia away to go after her. She trips and takes a bad fall, causing her to lose her child… REALLY? REALLY??? COULD IT GET ANY WORSE? You asked a great question because THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS! He notices and summons for a court physician—I don’t care! I still hate his guts! SO MUCH! So she ends up losing her child, and later on finds out that the empress is now with child. Of course, because the ugly bonehead can’t keep his cock to himself clearly. She falls into a depression, and her father, out of worry for her, expresses his true feelings towards her. That he regrets ever bringing her to the palace, and will bring her home to live back with him. This brightens her spirits. The fact that her cold-hearted father, who was only loyal to the emperor, put her first and had loved her all along. She was so overjoyed she didn’t even care anymore about everything that the crown prince (or emperor in current time I guess) did to her.
But the empress is ambushed, and loses her child in the process. Who gets blamed? Her family. More specifically; her father. Despite her begging for mercy, her father, the only person she has left, is unjustly killed to pay for a crime he didn’t even commit. She becomes infuriated, and in a moment of craziness, stabs the emperor. I mean… my QUEEN. YOUR MAJESTY! I DID NOT REALIZE YOU HAD IT IN YOU, BUT NEVER HAVE I LOVED YOU MORE DURING MY ONE HOUR READING THIS VOLUME! At this moment, she was a true queen. No one can convince me otherwise. Even if she is executed for her attempt, I don’t care. SHE STILL GOT HIM TO FEEL SOME OF THE PAIN HE SUBJECTED HER TO ALL HER LIFE. If only he died… but he doesn’t, and she does, at his hands. We all know that already, since it was the first scene in the volume.
But so she is given a second chance. She goes back in time 7 years ago, to when she was 10 years old. Yes, you’re right, she was 17 in the main story. Meaning, the disgusting emperor WAS ABUSING AND PREYING ON A MINOR THE WHOLE TIME! I have never hated a character more than this, at least within the last year. But anyway, the first thing she does is check that her father is alive. AW. Despite being educated on manners and proper etiquette and all that, and storms out in her pajamas to the training field and hugs her cold-hearted father, yelling out papa! He is flabbergasted, to say the least, and so are the rest of the knights and maids who laid witness to this event in history. Her father becomes worried at her behavior, and we found out that he… loves being called papa! How adorable!! And we also found out that he was a super hot dude… not that he wasn’t super hot during the main story but still. Please excuse that comment. ANYWAY, after that he’d grimace if she called him father like she usually did, so she started permanently calling him papa.
She is summoned to the palace because apparently a prophecy granted her a divine name, which somehow makes her a threat to the imperial family I guess. She doesn’t feign ignorance, and rather advises the current emperor (the douchebag’s father) of a current political and economical issue, and her proposal is enacted. I don’t want to go into further detail because it would take too long, but if you read the volume you know what I’m talking about. She also reveals to the emperor that she does not desire to be empress, even though they believe she is the child of a different prophecy, the shitty one that started this whole thing. They say she will be his fiancé in name for now, and they will end their engagement later. This was all at her suggestion I believe. What a smart girl! I wish her past self was this smart too.
So much happens in this volume, because I’m not done talking yet. She meets the chancellor’s genius second son, who becomes infatuated with her and proposes to her at first meeting. Yes, a 13-year-old proposes to a 10-year-old. You are not imagining things. Her possessive father (HAHAHA) hears this and disapproves immediately! He announces that he needs to learn to be good with a sword and not just his brain if he wants to go anywhere near his daughter, and only as a friend at that. The chancellor’s son takes on the challenge because he really wants to marry—I mean become friends with our female lead. How cute, HAHAHA. Of course, I’ll take anyone over the dipshit crown prince. I’ve run out of names to call him at this point.
But that’s what happens in this volume. A whole lot. It was hilarious to read to be honest, and infuriating at other points. However, as long as I enjoyed myself, it should be fine. I’ll give the second volume a shot.

The art is so beautiful and FULL COLOR I was so excited to get my hands on this!!!! Artisia is re-incarnated as her ten year old self and has to stop the disastrous betrothal of her to the emperor that will happen in the future. I loved the execution of this concept and I can't wait to see where the series goes next!

I’ve heard a lot of bad things about this webtoon/manhwa and I got spoiled on the ending which may affect my opinions. I’d say the main reason I decided to read the first volume is because it is one of the very limited selection of published webtoon (which saddens me), and I really wanted to experience reading one and physically seeing gorgeous art on paper. If only judging by the first volume, I’d say it was pretty good and entertaining and the art is amazing. The main complaint here, is the male lead. He is disgusting, abusive, intolerable, and a rap*st. And even after going back in time, his young self is equally as insufferable. I don’t care what kind of “trauma” he’s been through and I don’t care about his superiority complex, nothing can make me forgive what he did. He is absolutely disgusting and is the reason this was given a 4 star and not a 5. I don’t mind Tia so far but I do not understand and can’t excuse her for actually LIKING the smelly musty nasty ratty ugly blue headed horse face rat face sewer smelling Ruve (Idek if that’s his name).
I’d like to talk about Marquis Monique, he is literally gorgeous and the perfect definition of a dilf. I’d say that the ugly crown prince emperor- whatever (male lead) WISHES HE WAS DRAWN LIKE THIS MAN. He’s such a great father and his relationship with his daughter Tia is goals. He literally carried this whole volume and if I read any more it’ll be for him. I also will NOT HESITATE to offer myself to be Tia’s stepmom. She already deserves so much better than to be betrothed ever since she was born to that horrifying guy who TREATS HER LIKE GARBAGE AND ABUSES HER. The fact that I know the ending already throws me off. I know this is supposed to be a spoiler free review but I can’t help typing out my rage for the revolting guy whom I seriously already forgot the name of. AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON JIEUN YUCK. Yk what we’ll leave it at that.
There’s so much more I could say about the smurf and his actions but if I started ranting I’d never stop. Even though I know the ending, I’d like to see how this develops not just with him whose name must not be spoken but also with the other male leads. Plot: Deposed Empress of a protagonist is displaced to her 10-year old self, and devotes all her time and effort to not be completely in love with her asshole fiance of an Emperor this time. In the process she gets closer to people she valued in her previous life, and also makes a few new friends.
1. It's interesting to note that the actual world traveler from Earth is the woman who replaces the plot position (female lead to emperor) of the protagonist here, which is an interesting take on PoV. The protagonist also starts off as an Ice Queen, which appeals to my tastes. Her determination to do better in this life and her hatred and anger and fear of her ex-husband she still may have feelings for are pretty well done too. Less enthusiastic about every guy in the vicinity falling hard for her as soon as she becomes less of an ice queen. Let me have my relentless Ice Queens please why can I not keep them. But I guess at least she is nowhere near as saccharine as some of the other girl reincarnated into younger body stories?
2. I'm not a huge fan of multiple love interests battling over the same person, so that series of subplots makes me want to roll my eyes. However, every love interest is an interesting person with a distinctive personality, so it could be a lot worse. Carsein is fairly straightforward (shonen hero), but I would have liked to see more of Allendis being an asshole because that's way more interesting than the image of perfection he shows our heroine Tia. The Emperor-to-be (ie, Tia's asshole Ex) is not an interesting person on his own but his role in the plot (being VERY CONFUSED as to why this fiance he's been perfectly nice to thinks goes into actual shock when he's around) is fun.
3. The pathos of the old life adds an element of plot urgency to this story that I didn't find in the last few manhwas I tried reading. And while there is plenty of fluff, there's also enough character and plot progression in here to not make the whole thing collapse like a cake made entirely of whipped cream.
4. It also features a low-key Dad-Daughter relationship that is very adorable and it is a Weakness so...

La emperatriz abandonada es una historia sobre el destino y como Aristia decide romper esa línea impuesta por el dios Vita para poder forjar su propio camino.
En el primer volumen de este manhwa nos encontramos a Aristia La Monique, una noble que fue educada para ser la futura emperatriz y casarse con Ruve. Y es así hasta que aparece la niña del oráculo, una chica bendita, venida de otro mundo (el nuestro) para traer prosperidad al reino. A la llegada de Jieun, relegan a Aristia a una simple reina menor, hace todo el trabajo de la futura emperatriz y es tratada con frialdad. Todo parece ir a peor, hasta el punto que la mandan ejecutar. Cuando todo está a punto de terminar, Aristia recibe una segunda oportunidad y decide seguir su propio camino. ahora que vuelve a tener 10 años no va a dejar que nadie le diga qué hacer, ni que la humillen de nuevo.
Tengo que decir que adoro esta historia. Ya la conocía en formato webtoon y la he leído entera, por lo que esto es como una relectura en papel. Me gusta mucho la historia, como la protagonista decide romper con todo y cambiar, aunque en la primera parte Ruve es una Red Flag andante y me da repelús. Aristia pasa de ser una chica frágil que hace lo que le dicen sin discutir a luchar por su familia y proteger lo que ama. Me encanta el cambio que sufre en su reencarnación. Uno de los puntos fuertes de esta historia es la evolución de los personajes. Otra cosa que adoro es el estilo de dibujo y los diferentes trajes que se van mostrando, la estética de este manhwa es mi perdición.
Si os gustan las tramas palaciegas, secretos, espionaje y personajes que rompen con el destino, os la recomiendo mucho.

First things first, before I address this volume, as a warning to anyone who comes here, the ending of the series is somewhat spoiled in the reviews of this volume by other people. Reader beware, I'm not sure why people did that, but here we are.
That said, *this* review will be only about this volume, volume 1 of The Abandoned Empress. I had never heard of this series before seeing this volume at my local bookstore (admittedly I don't read a lot of web comics), and was delighted by the cover art and the artwork throughout. Fully colorized! What a novelty.
We start out in a bit of a lengthy prologue, where Aristia is living her young adult life as consort to the prince. Things go terribly awry (and also contains some problematic plot elements that I wasn't pleased to see), and Aristia is suddenly wrenched backwards by the world's deity to relive her life differently, starting from age ten, with the memories of her adult life intact. Sort of an "oops, my bad" moment on the part of the deity, but less levity and more seriousness. The rest of the manga involves Aristia getting used to this second chance at life, and the setup of her love interest(s) in the way these types of stories go. Some minor mystery elements about Aristia's past(? I think?) are introduced, which is interesting as well.
I'm pretty positive I'll be picking up the next volume, whatever the reviews here say.

I loved this so much!! Also I don't think I've ever read a Korean webtoon before so I'm really glad they're releasing this series in physical editions (and lo, what pretty editions they are — the cover is matte and paper-y and the silver flower line art on it is sparkly; I love how it contrasts with the brightly colored, smooth comic pages on the inside).
Volume 1 introduces a girl named Aristia who lived her whole life for the Emperor thanks to a prophecy that was misinterpreted to mean that she was destined to be Empress. When the real to-be Empress shows up, however, circumstances lead to Aristia being guillotined...except she finds herself back in her ten year old body in the past. This time around, she's determined to dictate her own fate and not love the Emperor.
I love that Aristia is growing closer to her father in this timeline and that she's discovering emotions and different sides of people that she wasn't able to experience previously!
I've heard grumbling about how this series ends so I am trying very hard not to google the ending!! Anyways I can't wait for volume 2.

کامل خوندمش ولی به زور تمومش کردم
سه فصل بود که فقط فصل اول اش نسبتا خوب بود ، هرچه جلوتر می رفت بد تر و ضعیف تر میشد ، آخراش که دیگه واقعا مسخره بود
البته، انگار آرتیست مانهوا از طرف خواننده ها نامه تهدید آمیز هم دریافت کرده بوده و قسمت های پایانی رو با عجله انجام می داده که زودتر تمومش کنه که خب همین باعث ضعف بیشتر تو قسمت های پایانی شده بود ولی اگر تهدید نمیشد و با آرامش کارش رو انجام میداد باز چیز خوبی ازش در نمیومد . مشکل خواننده ها با نویسنده و روند داسنان بود نه این بنده خدا که تهدید شد .

March 25, 2022I liked this volume well enough (the relationship between the MC and her dad was super cute), but based on who I've heard she winds up with at the end I don't think I want to continue reading.
I know there was a time reset and all so technically he's not the same person, but the level of utterly vile he was to her in the previous life makes it so I can't be the slightest bit happy about them winding up together. Just... ew.
