Once there were boundaries…but now that their chains are broken, these alphas refused to be contained.

Eight years ago, Ransom was only a teenager headed for the alpha territory of the Boundarylands when he was captured and held prisoner by a power hungry madman. Since that day he’s been kept deep underground, subjected to experimentation and torture.

But now his prison has been to reduced rubble, and there’s only one thing he wants more than freedom…revenge.

Gretchen Conrad is following a story about an explosion at a remote government site when she discovers something terrifying…something impossible—an alpha outside the Boundarylands. But even though Gretchen knows she should be afraid of this scarred beast, she can’t deny the primal pull she feels when he comes too close.

But the more time she spends with Ransom, the more she feels herself changing…until she’s no longer sure if she’ll ever be the same again.

RANSOM is the first book in The Unchained Omegaverse, a hot new ABO romance series featuring knotting, heats, and possession. Wear gloves, cause this sh*t is hot.

I am loving the spin-off!!

So we finally finish taking out the trash....as in Fulmer got what was coming to him!! Ransom wasn't gonna back down or walk away into the sunset until it was finally over and Fulmer was worm food. But along the way we find out some impressive new traits these 'Extra' Alphas were accidentally given. How about the ability to change a beta woman that you have strong feelings for into an Omega, for one? Oh the possibilities this opens!! 100 special enhanced extra alphas just escaped and running free from the middle of nowhere Nebraska. I can't wait for all the rest of the crazy stories this is gonna spring. And it seems Fulmer wasn't the Boss, and he seems to be replaceable. Uh Oh!!

I loved the progression of Ransom and Gretchen's relationship. I loved that there was a build up, unlike the instant Omega trait triggers. I enjoyed watching both of their senses and instincts come to life, watching their feelings blossom along with their trust. As Ransom and Gretchen relaxed into their instinctual roles they realized there wasn't anything better than being together as Alpha and Omega, and it was a better future than they could have ever imagined.

Ransom de Callie Rhodes Serie The Unchained Omegaverse libro 1

Argumento:

Definitely an easy read with some elements I enjoyed. I haven’t read the series this is a spin-off of so there’s definitely some parts where I felt like I was missing some of the world building. This is also really short so there isn’t too much relationship development, especially since this takes place over about a day. I would read more from this author but this wasn’t anything special.

I thought this story was ok. Ransom and Gretchen were pretty interesting and the world was interesting. But I just wasn't crazy about it. There wasn't too much in this story that made it seem like an ABO story. Might return to this series later.

2.5? I liked the MMC; I thought he was interesting. The book would have benefited from being longer because I wanted to learn more about him. The FMC was meh, one of those typical spitfire "I have to live up to my parent's legacy" types, but her real interest in journalism didn't stretch beyond anything more complex than some vaguely expressed desire for the "truth."

The writing got repetitive at times, especially when they had one of their thought monologues. The stakes are put up so high the plot seems impossible to be resolved so easily. It was also like the gravity of the situation wasn't understood by the FMC or she should be freaking out more. There are sadistic people in the government who want her dead for asking a few basic questions, and she’s still worried if her regular small newspaper editor wouldn’t publish her long and incriminating essay that could apparently turn the world upside down.

Gretchen also gets horny at random moments, such as when she’s running for her life or literally when he’s making dinner. One of the tensions in the plot is that earlier on, they can’t have sex or it would ruin Gretchen’s reputation to have a romantic relationship with an alpha. But…who would even know if they had sex or not, besides the murderous government workers they've slipped past at this point??

As an aside, this is the second omegaverse book I’ve read lately in a semi modern setting where women are routinely discriminated against and have suffered a regression in rights. Ngl but that’s pretty annoying and personally cuts into escapism, especially in this time and age.

Anyway, as likeable as MMC was, he couldn't save the book. I don't think this book packed a punch. Maybe it was the short length inhibiting plot and character development. I didn't realize until now that this is actually a spin-off, so maybe if I read from the main series I would've liked this book better. Idk.

The couple: Ransom and Gretchen

Romance genre: Omegaverse
Series: The Unchained Omegaverse
Length: 156 pages

Plot: Gretchen is a reporter who has been sent to cover an explosion at a nearby government facility. When she gets there, she finds that it is not a simple fire like she first assumed. Rather, it is a deliberately-set explosion of a building that is far more extensive than it seems at first glance. Not only that, she manages to upset the scientist in charge, who then send soldiers after her to kill her. She is rescues by one of the alphas who has escaped the facility, and he decides he can use her to tell his story of captivity and torture. What follows is the story of a government cover-up as well as a burgeoning love affair.

Character development: This was a different aspect to an omegaverse story: Gretchen had been tested and believed she was not an omega and Ransom had been experimented on and believed he could not awaken an omega. For whatever reason, they were both wrong, but Gretchen's awakening was different from ones we've seen in the past - slow and steady rather than instantaneous. I also like the direction that this series is taking with the additioinal focus on women's places in society. Gretchen thought and talked about how things have gotten much worse for women recently in hersociety, and it's something worth examining in omegaverse in general. The dynamic lends itself to possibilities of ill-treatment even in the best-intentioned cultures. I mean, I'm not going to stop reading because omegaverse is one of my favorite tropes, but ignoring the set-up in a society that mirrors our own leaves out a lot of possibilities for plot. So kudos to Callie Rhodes for incorporating that here!

🐺 “Go ahead… You know you want to look.”
~~~
Gretchen is feisty, brave and determined to prove to everyone that she’s a great reporter. I loved how she managed to overcome her fears regarding the alpha and step out of her mother’s shadow.
Ransom has suffered for years and everything from his past was horrible and heartbreaking. Now, finally free, he’s hell-bent on revenge. He’s strong and violent - a one-man army. But he’s also honorable and protective and I liked that about him. And he had some unexpected abilities that I loved so much.
The development of their relationship was great. There was a lot of tension but their attraction was undeniable and scorching hot. Both had a past to deal with in order to discover their strengths and find peace and happiness.
And when Ransom finally got his revenge… Oh, so satisfying!
Overall, the story is a great start of the new series. It’s filled with fast-paced action, danger, drama, steamy romance, unexpected twists, revenge and wonderful characters.
I loved it and can’t wait to see what happens next!
Good but…
I like this author and this general universe, but I feel we missed the mark on a few key points. First, the characters are not very bright. There is no strategy, they just wait around until the bad guy comes get them. H has been waiting 8 years for his revenge, you would think he be more proactive. Then I have an issue with h’s age. I think she’s 23 but supposed to be a seasoned reporter? Even if she had been reporting since she was in high school it sounds like her experience is limited, so she should be overwhelmed and asking how her mom would have handled it. It bothered me all the references to her being a hard edge reported because she wasn’t. And it distracted me. There were also a couple of typos that I was surprised to see.
Other than those, it was a fun read and a great introduction to a new series. I read the story in a day, so obviously not turned off by the few shortcomings. I definitely recommend.
Interesting Twists & Turns
This is the most exciting Boundarylands story I've read in a while. Ransom & Gretchen's adventure had many surprises. Spoilers: The huge reveal that it's likely that 'Fulmer the Psycho' unintentionally made the alphas who escaped his inhumane government lab nearly invincible through each sick experiment they survived was a really great surprise. I was STILL trying to figure out how Ransom made Gretchen an omega when she tested as a beta until the moment Ransom realized Fulmer's experiments gave him the power to turn any female into an omega, dormant omega or not. Beyond Gretchen & Ransom's HEA, that was the best part of the book. After all the years these alphas lost due to torture & abuse by a hateful mad "scientist", they deserved to get SOMETHING back. I can't wait to see how the alphas take down evil beta males like Fulmer w/ new powers.
Rules don't apply to some alphas
This is a spinoff series and it seems that some of the rules have changed.
Ransom has sworn vengeance on the man who experimented of him and hundreds of other alphas.
Gretchen is a female beta reporter relegated to weddings and other social type items. When she gets a chance at a possible "real" story, she takes it. Only the reporters are not given the truth. So she starts asking questions and finds herself marked for death.
As I said before, some rules are changing but....
Spoiler Alert
Why was there no biting by the female in order to claim her alpha? Was this a mistake by the author? Or is it not needed now? I would love an explanation, maybe in the next book.
Quick read, perfectly done.
📚 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Omegaverse romance
📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Ransom has been held in an underground cell for the past 8 years. When he escapes, he'll bent on revenge, he's surprised to meet Gretchen, a reporter covering the situation. Beneath their obvious and indescribable connection is the need to get the truth out.
🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I love series like this - books hanging at about 200 pages, which reads with some spice thrown in for good measure that are perfect "in-between" reads or the cure to a good book hangover.
If you go in with that expectation, you'll be fine. I think the synopsis promised more spice than I got, but whatever. Otherwise, it was perfect for what I needed now.
𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 3.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐
Oh, I liked this :)
I enjoyed this one. So much so that, I plan on going and reading the Boundrylands series now, while I continue reading this one.
I liked the setting and how the dynamics of the world are laid out. I cared about Ransom and Gretchen's journey. It was quick but given the subject, that made sense. Showed the dynamic between alpha and omega. It's biology.
I also like the parallel to what's going on in our world irl. It had a ring of truth to the persecution alphas suffered, and how a government with too much power can wield it, unimpuned, with devastating results, and unintended consequences.
A steamy love story, danger, discovery, and passion. Quick read that was just right.
On the run
Gretchen is a reporter but not covering anything good, just women's stuff. She was sent to start coverage of a story of a raging fire out in the middle of nowhere. Ransom started it and was now in hiding to get his revenge on the man who took away his life and made him watch as his twin brother died. He was an Alpha and taken to a facility to be experimented on. Gretchen was targeted to be killed but not on Ransom's watch. There was this pull towards her. They had to fight their way out of situations. Gretchen was changing becoming an omega. Will they make it out alive? Very nice story.
I have read other stories by this author and have liked the stories enough to over look the grammatical errors. Unfortunately I have gotten hung up on some of this stories issues first is what self-respecting reporter does not go back for their bag which has notebook or cell phone or some sort of recording device…second is the trope of living up to parent’s legacy..make ur own quit coat tail riding on ur mother’s legacy…it’s not yours..also the constant in her head about getting recognized for her awesomeness…All I seen was mediocre riding coat-tails expecting to be recognized as greatness…this ended up in DNF pile as I could not get passed the 50% mark.
Unexpected
I don’t think there is anything about this book I didn’t like. It was different then I usually read. I’m more into werewolves and other shifters but this book took me by surprise. I read the reviews and decided to give it a chance and I’m super glad I did. I definitely wasn’t disappointed when I finished this book (other then the fact it was over!) I can’t wait to see what else you have in store for this series! Hopefully a little bit of Ransom and Gretchen as well! Thank you for a great story!
A good story for Random
This book is a good read about an alpha male that has been abused. His story actually hurt my heart. Ransom telling the horrors from his captivity was heartbreaking. After Ransom saves this female reporter Gretchen, things start to look better for him and her. The bulk of the story has this couple on the run. However they do get to know each other and build a connection that neither of them knew was possible. The book was a good length, serious angst especially consistent with the danger, and push-pull relationship. Read On!
Awesome!
This series kickoff picks up on the former Boundary lands series albeit with different characters. I loved Ransom's evolution into a full forged Alpha despite the torture, loss, and deprivation he endured at the hands of Fulmer. And the courage, strength, and determination Gretchen displayed really earned my admiration as a heroine. Women rock! This author has the ability to grab your attention from the first page and keep it to the last. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
Really enjoyed this!
This book was recommended to me when I was searching for an omegaverse book that was not RH. It really sucked me in! The plot held my interest, the world building was decent (although I hope the Boundarylands get fleshed out more in future books) and the dual POV was well done. The main characters' relationship was a nice medium burn that developed in a believable way (for a paranormal romance).
Overall, I definitely recommend this book if you're looking to try an omegaverse with a M/F romance.
Oohhh a great start to the new series which is a spin-off from The Boundarylands. Ransom's story after escaping is a complex one after being in caged underground for 8 years. Are the changes in his body because he's an Alpha or because of the experiments he was forced to endure. After escaping and meeting Gretchen things just heat up. The structure of the book is similar to Callie's other books but is nevertheless a great read.
Ransom
This was a good read but it drug in many places with a running dialogue of the male/female thinking about or remembering things. Page after page of it. Found myself skipping thru to get back to the action.
I’m ok with the character thinking thoughts but not 6-10 pages of thinking.
Ransom
This book was lukewarm for me. Decent writing, without glaring errors or overused cliches; interesting plot; developed characters . It just didn’t keep my attention. It wasn’t riveting. I didn’t fall in love with the world building or the H and h’s love story. So just a 4. Not bad, but it wasn’t amazing.
I found the pacing of this book strange.
The majority of it takes place over 2-3 days but somehow still drags on unnecessarily.
I appreciate the need to build the back story and the basis of the series but when the showdown/climax is over within a couple of pages it feels like it was finished in a hurry.
Truly suspenseful
In the grand pantheon of stories about the omegaverse, this story gives all the best of the genre. Add to that the dystopia of a society terrified by governmental propaganda and you have a great story with compelling characters and solid world building. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
