Have you ever felt like you woke up on the wrong side of reality? Have you ever felt like you were stuck in a world that was losing its bloody mind? Have you ever felt like, if you could just get a damned cup of coffee, that everything would resolve itself? Here, we meet a young man, named Danny, who inexplicably—for reasons that he cannot, will not, bring himself to fathom—finds his comfortably-constructed world tearing apart its very seams. The story that unfolds is an exploration of the importance of memories, the fragility of sanity, and the fleeting nature of identity.
Praise for Dysfunction:
"Brimming with humour, rich in idealism, earthy common sense, and vivid in its characterizations of its fascinatingly esoteric troupe of rogues and romantics. It is a tragically comedic tale of (seeming and being; of consequences and lack-thereof. As told through its cast of eccentric characters; including the likes of our protagonist whose conscience jeers at him in the voice of a female-David-Bowie, a samurai-sword-wielding anarchist, and an adorably-cynical bulldog-puppy sidekick. We embark on a story of love, life, and most definitely laughter." — Greg.
"This book read like a competition between the author and himself to see who could write the more clever lines. Neither won. It read more like a soapbox monologue, with an unnecessarily convoluted narrative thinly woven throughout, with varying degrees of success. All said, in the end, I admit, I wasn't completely flaccid while reading this. And for that reason alone, it's Five-stars for me!" — Rudy Bergerac
"Dysfunction" by Kyle St Germain is a mind-bending journey through the disconcerting corridors of reality, where the mundane meets the absurd, and sanity hangs by a fragile thread. The novel begins with a series of existential questions that resonate with the reader's own moments of disorientation, setting the stage for the tumultuous odyssey of its protagonist, Danny.
Danny, a young man facing the unexplainable unraveling of his carefully constructed world, becomes the focal point of this exploration into the labyrinthine depths of memories, sanity, and identity. St Germain's narrative unfolds with a blend of wit and gravity, leading readers through a tragically comedic tale where consequences and their absence intertwine.
The cast of eccentric characters, taunt the main protagonist Danny, from his inner female-David-Bowie, to the samurai-sword-wielding anarchist, and an adorably cynical bulldog-puppy sidekick, adds layers of intrigue to the narrative. St Germain skillfully weaves their stories together, creating a captivating ensemble that propels the reader into a world of love, life, and laughter.
In essence, "Dysfunction" is a literary enigma that invites readers to question the boundaries of reality and sanity. Kyle St Germain's ability to infuse humor, idealism, and earthy common sense into a narrative exploring the complexities of existence is commendable. While opinions on the book's narrative style may differ, the overall impact of "Dysfunction" lies in its ability to provoke thought and entertain simultaneously. Whether you find yourself captivated by the esoteric troupe of characters or amused by the clever lines, this novel promises an experience that is anything but ordinary.
Kyle St Germain's newly published novel 'Dysfunction' is slick, smart, appealing and well written.
As readers step through the looking glass into a tale that is observant, thoughtful and yet brimming with humour, they should be prepared to uncover cameo portraits of almost everyone they know within these pages, for are we all not one classic character or another?
The idealistic yet curious Danny who is both protagonist and antagonist in his own archetypal journey, appears to be well grounded in a P.G. Wodehouse quote,
"I can detach myself from the world. If there is a better world to detach oneself from than the one functioning at the moment I have yet to hear of it."
As could be expected from such a perspective, it is inevitable Danny's carefully constructed world begins to fall apart - this is when the sky falls, the ground shifts and the plot thickens but yet, the world still glimmers momentarily ...
I might be a little biased in my review, but what the heck, here it is... This is probably my favorite book! Top three at least! Okay... maybe five! Ten?
