From USA Today Bestselling Author Jessica Wayne, comes a pulse-pounding, steamy, forbidden romance between a hunter and a vampire. So grab something strong, maybe some skittles (or your snack of choice), and get ready for a vampire romance unlike anything you've read.
Hunting vampires is her legacy.
Detective Rainey Astor walks a dangerous line between the human and supernatural worlds. As a vampire hunter, she’s a formidable opponent, having killed hundreds of their kind. Yet, when her latest foray into the supernatural world goes terribly wrong, she finds herself rescued by the very creature she’s vowed to kill.
Elijah Hawthorne is unlike any vampire Rainey has ever met. His sexy as hell exterior hides a tortured soul seeking redemption. Rainey knows she should avoid him at all costs, but fate has other plans. Together, they’re forced down a twisted path of ancient revenge and tainted love.
With Elijah guarding her back, Rainey must protect her heart, because giving in could mean a death sentence for them both. But if they don’t discover the hidden identity of their enemy before the clock runs out, she’s as good as dead anyway.
USA Today Bestselling Author of steamy PNR and fantasy romance.
Ever since my grandmother first handed me a Nora Roberts novel, I KNEW I wanted to write romance.
I love love. Crave it. For me, genre doesn't matter as long as there is a beautifully epic love story woven into the storyline.
Which is exactly why I chose to write across so many genres. Paranormal, fantasy, contemporary, suspense...no matter which of my books you choose you always know what you're getting: a love story for the ages.
And before I was an author, I was a reader! Please be sure to follow me here, or add me as a friend! I love to connect!
You ever finished a series and just sat looking at the last page wondering how the hell you got there? Dude Where’s My Brain cause I have no damn idea WTF I read, much less if I liked it. Granted, I’m at home with the flu, but this was beyond a fever-induced state of dementia. I feel like I’ve been trapped in the rabbit’s disco tunnel and slipped a ruffle by a pink purple people eater.
Let’s start at the beginning.
Book One
There’s something graphic and charismatic about this author’s writing that immediately draws me into her web. It’s very easy to get pulled into the scene to see everything through the character(s) lens. Some writers are tellers, and some writers are showers - this author is a shower even as she’s telling.
Elijah is a warrior with the manners of an aristocrat. A hero with the tongue of a villain.
Great take on vamps and hunters. It feels a little Van H, Mission Impossible, Underworld, Twilight, Romeo and Juliet all wrapped up in a unique package. There’s a lot going on in the stage setup, world-building, and character insertions. It’s not until after 1/3 of the book that there’s the first intro of romance, and it remains a sexual tension for almost the entire book.
Sounds normal enough, right? Yea, that’s the author going: ‘Here, kitty, kitty’ for the fuckery she’s about to slap your ass with. I’m getting ahead of myself ///
The FMC verges on TSTL. He verges on a a puppy following her around sniffing her ass. Yet, somehow, this shit works. Why? Just as I would be frustrated as fuck that I didn’t have an answer for why or how and be on the verge of throwing this shit in the book graveyard, the author would throw a piece of a bone out there for me to nibble on while she adds MORE damn layers to the story.
This shit is a disaster, but you can’t stop. It’s like looking at a fountain of chocolate and being a diabetic… knowing you should not stick your fruit kabob in the temptation, but damn if you don’t keep easing it toward it.
BAM… Ends in cliffhanger.
Book Two
I’m reading along thinking: Okay, this ‘who’s behind curtains 1-200’ as we devour Skittles is getting exhausting. It’s like peeling a damn onion with eight of your ten fingers paralyzed. I’m impatient, and I’m running out of analogies for this shit.
In addition to all the above fan fiction from book one, we gain some Fantastic Beasts, Jennifer’s Body, and a heavy dose of soap opera. * blinks rapidly* yes, I do need saving~!
Forget how many times the FMC must be saved. Whhhhooowe.
Forget that the MMC goes from badass doing the saving to being flung around like a rag doll at every turn. Hurhump.
Forget that every new character just happens to know a dead character from Salem or some other part of the world and that’s a different species of supernatural they’re not even supposed to associate with. Mmkay.
Forget that this mofo has more exes that old Hef collected.
Forget that everyone seems to know a lot about nothing.
Forget that you are TOLD about the forbidden relationship results and the bounty on her head being more dangerous than juggling napalm as she just strolls on in to work day after day like this is some Nicholas Sparks book.
Forget it all because by midway, shit will be so damn soap opera that you’ll expect a secret baby to fly off a bookshelf riding a unicorn as it drinks a martini from Indiana Jones’s skull. Not just any soap opera, either. Remember that soap opera, Passions, that made Days of Our Lives look like a damn serious documentary. Unbelievable wasn’t in it. Here we are in book format.
Anyway, this is a para book, meaning I will go with a lot … a lot of crazy before I call it unbelievable. Jane and Bronywyn <—— that entire f’ing storyline was just Passions on crack. Too much. Way the hell too much. The attic bones… it’s starting to feel like this author is just throwing anything and everything at wall, watching as some shit sticks and others fall to a puddle of mud for the reader to trudge through.
Ends in cliffhanger that will have readers either pissed off with one or all characters. Personally, I’m not pissed at the MMC. If he was a woman, what this was wouldn’t even be questioned.
Carrie… errr… Heather has risen.
What I can tell you is that, albeit absurd, I’m stuck in this damn soap opera’s muddy bath water. Was I bored - no. Was I frustrated - hell, yes. Will I keep going to book three - duh, I got to know how they reverse this shit and get revenge.
I hate this f’ing author. Like legit want to tie her to a tree and shoot spitballs at her through a straw for making me semi-obsessed with this shit. I can’t look away. Yes, I tried. Yes, I failed.
Book Three
First, let me say that the caliber of writing found in chapter three is how I’ve made it through this shit show in one piece. I’m going to talk so much shit about this book and it’s creator. Before I do, I’ll admit that this author is some kind of damn word fairy, weaving a spell over the reader.
So, book three…
This is where the jumbled tangled web is supposed to finally be pulled taunt and make sense. Sadly, it just gets more scrunched up into nonsense to explain nonsense disguised as bullshit. Let’s take a look’c…
1) Wait just a damn minute. They’re in his house of silver, and I thought that was supposed to make all the supernatural powers be all but useless? So, how did granny do all her shit? How did Heather? Blinks while I wait for an answer.
2) “Agatha was born on Halloween during a full moon in nineteen-forty-four. <<< Agatha is the FMC’s grandmother.
“You could try my dad’s birthday. He was her son.” “Sure, what was it?” “August fourteenth, nineteen-oh-two.”
Ah, so, the FMC’s dad is older than his mother?
3) She’s the Astor matriarch; her husband was a hunter.”
I thought interspecies relationships were forbidden? Yet, here we have one that survived generations? The MMC’s parents were hunted down (a witch and vamp) but a witch and hunter is okay? How about that dead witch and shifter boyfriend from book two? There’s a damn lot of inner species shit going on here for it to be so forbidden. Just saying.
4) Souls in birds, witches stealing bones, power this and power that. Listen, this is cake and eating it, too. One minute the souls give someone else reason to die via its power… the next it’s that the souls are safely tucked away so that they can really not be dead (waves at Stefano DiMera off in the distance) … so which is it?
5) Lunar Divide witches - this entire plot point unravels the more the author tries to wrap it up. No one knows shit about it #huge mystery. Ah, no, everyone knows outside the MCs but no one can say shit about it. Whoops wait a minute, decades ago, the FMC’s great grandparents knew and protected the grandmother, but the grandmother didn’t bother to do the same for the granddaughter… but granny created this big cloak and dagger shit to supposedly secretly protect her, but it had the opposite effect and drug her straight to it. It’s like a dog chasing it’s tail.
Rainey’s great grandmother—knew of the target painted on the Lunar Divide witches and had her during a home birth. They altered the birth certificate to show Agatha’s date of birth as being November fifth. The only reason I know about it is because I was there the day Agatha was born.”
^^^ That moots the entire f’ing plot because the same could have been done for the FMC and avoided all these f’rs trying to kill her for two books.
I won’t even get into the fact that granny is doing the same shit the evil Heather is doing…
I won’t even get into yet another forbidden romance emerging out of nowhere. I guess when you have Carrie… I mean Heather… on the loose, it trumps the rulers of the supernatural world putting bounties on your heads for forbidden romances, right?
6) The Council… who the fuck cares? So, let me get this straight, this Council is worried about a sex slave escaped centuries ago… interspecies dating… Hunters born on Halloween… and all the other completely TRIVIAL shit when compared to the original witch going on killing sprees for world domination. You’re shitting me, right?
7) Heather is in a box. Heather needs the FMC’s body. So, how the hell is Heather out of the box killing mofos? I’m lost as a goose in a duck blind.
8) How many f’ing best friends does Delaney have? Asking for a friend of a friend.
9) Hunters hate other supernaturals. Hunters hunt other supernaturals to kill their asses. Yet, we have hunters hunting mofos for breaking that rule as they team up with other supernaturals (thereby breaking the rules they’re enforcing) so that they can whoop ass against said hunted supernaturals of mixed breeds teaming up or falling in love. Wtf ever.
10) Just so everyone is clear. This shit goes in circles upon circles upon circles to never make a damn bit of sense.
11) Does anyone really die here. How many ways and times can these f’rs come back to life. Seriously, how many?
Anyhoo….
One thing makes this series something you can’t put down, and it’s not the mofo plot devices aligning for a well-oiled machine <<<—— cause that shit is like the graveyard of dead junker cars smashed up as square peg going into a round garbage dump.
It’s the author’s writing of the shit. I swear this woman had to have been a writer for Passions, that show that everyone recorded while at work, but no one admitted to actually watching.
It’s addictive and full of so much flavor that you shrug your way through the nonsense just to see wtf happens next.
Here’s what I mean…
Jack’s eyes widen as a bird lands on my shoulder. Delaney’s presence gives me a bit of calm in this fucked-up storm. “I believe you remember Delaney,” I say dryly, and he stumbles back, eyes widening almost comically. Except, I kind of feel for him. Or would if he wasn’t a massive fucking asshole.
Delaney, who died in front of her lover (Jack) is actually not dead. She’s trapped in a fucking bird. Jack shows up to Delaney’s sister’s boyfriend’s house to save the day with his new forbidden girlfriend only to come face to beak with his dead girlfriend (as a bird) sitting on the shoulder of a vampire who could’ve been his brother in law if this book didn’t like to kill everyone and resurrect them at the most inconvenient times.
Fuck Passions…. This is Jerry Springer….
Another knock on the door. “That would be the pack,” Jane says as she heads toward the door. She pulls it open and Paloma rushes inside, her husband beside her. “Where is she?” she demands. “The bloodsucker lost her,” Jack says dryly. Paloma’s eyes meet his. “And who the hell are you?” “Dad?” Willa whispers as soon as Josiah steps into the room. He stops mid-step and stares at her, tears in his eyes. “Willa?” They rush toward each other, clashing in the middle, tears slipping freely down both sets of cheeks. I want to urge them to hurry up with the fucking reunion. After all, we have a much bigger issue here.
*shakes head* *reads onward*
Mary, Jane, and Tupox… we go from Jerry Springer to Cyborg to I don’t know what the hell to some Mockingjay Hunger Games shit being turned down to the HEA.
OVERALL
Whew. I’ve never been so damn exhausted. This is NOT the shit to read with a fever.
Craziness.
I don’t know if I want to slowly kick the author’s shin until it falls off or high five her ass. Despite all the above, there’s really no damn words to sum this up. None. If all of this was in the author’s head… bless her heart.
Binge worthy! It will keep you hooked till the very end! If you love vampires, hunters and werewolves this one is for you! Its fast pace and non-stop action! Rainey and Elijah will rock your world!
The world building lacked. The characters were plenty and diverse but the world it took place in was boring and under represented. Especially how this all worked without becoming public knowledge the way it was described and influenced the human world in such a big and unrealistic way.
And then I had my problems with the impulsive and reckless female lead. It felt like every character was acting with a degree of maturity but our heroine. Her defiance just simply to oppose someone was more often silly than attractive. The characters hundreds of years old didn’t act like they had seen and lived the world and it’s ever repeating mechanisms, it simply was unbelievable and not really compatible with the characters descriptions and their behaviour and thought process.
Otherwise it was an undemanding way to waste time for free.
This series is super great!! I love every book!! It’s great to get all of Rainey and Elijah’s books in one book set!! All 3 books are 5 stars! I wrote individual reviews for each book, so sorry if it’s long and repetitive! For a short review, extremely entertaining, kick-butt female and male characters, sweet and passionate romance with a deep connection, and really cool magical world!! Definitely recommend reading!!
Blood Hunt - Book 1
Loved this one! Strong, intelligent kick butt heroine! Drool-worthy, strong sweetheart of a hybrid hero. Hunters, Vampires, Shifters, Witches! Action, danger, and suspense! All good fun things! Rainey is a hunter and a detective; when more and more odd attacks start to happen in Rainey's life, she's in for some surprises and some unexpected allies. Turns out there's lots of things Rainey isn't completely clear on in her life; some things she's been kept in the dark about and some things she refuses to see. Rainey's preconceived notions do get in the way sometimes, but I love that she actually listens to her gut. Vampire/witch Elijah tries to help and protect her, but she's not making that easy. They are supposed to be enemies, but Elijah will do whatever he needs to do to prove he can be trusted. It's a tough road for these two! Loved getting POV's from both Rainey and Elijah. Loved how the story unfolded. Loved the characters. This book is just the type of story I love to read! I'm excited to see where this story is going to go in the next books. This one has a cliffhanger, so be prepared for that. Fully entertaining and totally awesome!
Blood Captive - Book 2
Ahhh man!! I’m so angered by that ending! Too many secrets causing too many problems; withholding information is never a good idea. Plus, there’s a major cliffy. I’m just sad. And I’m so ticked at these characters and their dumb actions. Still a very entertaining book though! Love the passion and the deep connection between Rainey and Elijah. So sweet and sexy; some hot stuff! I was not a fan of some of Elijah’s past intruding into the present, and his idea of a good date place, but loved how protective he is of Rainey. Rainey is still kicking butt, but there’s a bit more weakness shown because of her kind heart; she doesn’t handle it very well when those she cares for are harmed. Still a tough lady though. In this book, there’s lots of witches being killed, and there’s still the mystery of the box; which was stupid to open in my opinion. Bad Rainey! I’m also not very trusting of what Delaney did, and for some reason I don’t trust Tarnley; not sure why, it’s probably nothing. Just too many characters thinking that withholding things is the way to go, but it’s just creating so many problems. There was just so much information given that the characters should’ve been able to handle things a whole lot better, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. I’m hoping the ending of this book will be turned around very quickly in the next book; I’m not a fan of suffering, and I hope the characters start handling things better and making better choices. Here’s hoping!! Super excited to read the next one!!!
Blood Cure - Book 3
After that cliffy from the last book, I’m so glad this one came out fast! Oh man! Things are not good for Rainey and Elijah! This is book 3, so make sure you read the previous books if you haven’t yet because it’s definitely needed! Plus, you’ll want the full story! So, where we left off in the last book, Rainey’s body has been taken over by an evil witch; Elijah is beside himself! And things just straight suck for Rainey! If I was Rainey, I’d be straight pissed at all the people that lied and withheld important information that would’ve helped her body from being possessed. It’s going to be quite the adventure and quite the fight to get back to any type of happy for Rainey and Elijah. Rainey is still a strong kick butt lady, so don’t count her down. She does do some stupid things, but ultimately, she’s great. Elijah is still his wonderful, protective sweetheart self. Love this series! It’s super entertaining! Awesome characters! Fun action! Cool, unique ideas! So Dang Good!!
Man it's so hard to sum up 3 books but i really loved this trilogy. I loved that at the beginning of the books there was only a couple of people involved in the story and by the end they had so many people in their lives helping them.
Rainey Astor is a natural born hunter but she doesn't kill without a purpose and that purpose is protecting innocents from Vampires who recklessly kill humans. By day she is a cop and by night a hunter. When she finds herself in more than one situation barely making it out alive Rainey questions is something sinister is at play especially when a certain vampire keeps turning up at the worst times. Enter Elijah Hawthorne he's very old and is not your typical vampire he possess magic thanks to his witch mother. He seeks Rainey out wishing to form an alliance for a bigger plan in which he needs Rainey's help but first he'll have to gain her trust something she doesn't freely give out. With a bounty on both of their heads and a forbidden bond forming between them the feelings that begin to form between them could very well send the whole supernatural community gunning for their deaths. Rainey trys to seek answers into her past only to uncover a few truth bombs about her so called hunter lineage but what Rainey unleashes is far more dangerous than anyone could have anticipated, with a evil darkness possessing her body and many hidden secrets coming to light, Rainey will have to trust many she would normally hunt to ensure that the one out for revenge doesn't succeed in taking over her body permanently and killing all those she holds dear.
Such a good read 👏 you won't be disappointed... Can't wait to read Delaney's story next.
I’m not sure if reading all the books in the series back to back was the best idea. I usually love binge reading series because the wait for the next one kills me, but this series while very entertaining with all the twists and turns and the action, some parts frustrated me to no end.
I can’t get into any specifics because of spoilers, but I feel there was so much extra drama that it drowned the story a bit. So maybe if I had taken a break in between books I wouldn’t have felt so frustrated with the characters.
I went into this with zero expectations and ended up really enjoying it. It was also nice to have an MFC that was over the age of 25, even if Rainey (37) did still make some unwise decisions. It even had a lot of the tropes that I look for in a fantasy/romance series.... Vampires, shapeshifters, fae, witches, magic, lost and found family, enemies to lovers, chosen one, fated mates (sorta), touch her and die, and the list goes on. Overall, it was an easy, fast-paced enjoyable read.
The energy and action in this book is one of the highest I've ever read! The storyline is very fast-paced and well written, filled with magic, murder, intrigue and romance. The characters are so we'll developed they all but leap off the pages. I enjoyed this book so much that I can't wait to see where the rest of the series takes us!
This was a good series. I enjoyed each of the books and definitely the relationship between Elijah and Rainey. There were moments where I laughed, then cried. This was my first series by this author, and I'm hoping she wrote books about other characters in the series (I'll definitely be looking into it).
Elijah & Rainey are amazing throughout these books! I love the dynamic between them, the growth & that despite his past Rainey doesn’t jump straight to jealousy or insecurities with what they share. I’d had been looking for a book that had grown characters who didn’t act like children & I definitely found that with these! Highly recommend!!
Am in absolutely love with these characters. Rainey and Elijah so hot, sexy and the best dialogue. Even the side characters all held my attention. I can't wait to read more.
Audiobook. The narrators did a nice job! The stories were interesting and entertaining. The characters have depth and complexity. I appreciate the author using correct anatomical terms instead of slang.
I really enjoyed this series, which I wasn't expecting. I liked Jessica's writing style. My inky comment is the end felt a little bit rushed but in general a solid 3.5 stars from me
I have submitted reviews for each title contained within this series set box after listening to the audiobook of this title. The reviews can be found on the individual title's pages.
