Firefighter Shane Sumner has a secret. He's not the brave, hometown hero everyone thinks he is. He's fireproof, and possibly crazy, or telepathic. Now the dog is talking to him, along with the plants, threatening to upend his sham of a perfect life. Can he conceal his strange abilities or will they expose him for the freak he knows he is?
One hot mess deserves another... Life isn't easy for a fire shifter. Fiona and Aislinn's powers keep them homeless, and the streets are full of Rogues and other unsavory characters. Prince Charming isn't coming to save them. Or is he? A handsome, flame-retardant stranger may just be the answer to all of their problems.
And where, oh where has Hugh gone? Kat struggles to find the answers while chasing a boatload of Rogues. Join Kat, Hugh, Dale, Jacob, and the rest of the gang as the adventure continues!
Kimberly Gordon is an author, veteran, IT professional and mother of five boys. She lives in a hundred-year-old farmhouse in rural Illinois, where she enjoys coming up with outrageous stories to tell to anyone who will listen, including her chickens, who sometimes come up with ideas for their own.
When she's not busy taking dictation for the Supers, she's also troubleshooting networks, writing, or chasing kids and farm animals. She also enjoys digital art, gardening, music and poetry.
This title is okay but is really interleaved threads, or arcs, of four stories. I found it difficult to keep up with it all reading it in that manner. Thus I mapped out the main characters of each thread to read them independently. This helped me greatly. None of the threads reach any significant resolution. One of the threads is given over to Rogues which leads to glorifying evil.
While it is interesting, it is unsatisfying. More of a stepping stone than a real story.
Being a part of kindle unlimited! It has entertaining and varied characters. Although this book, in particular, was not well edited, at least it didnt contain duplicate dialog that lasted for two or more pages like, either the previous two books, or the second and third, can't really recall which two it was. But the author repeated about two whole pages in two books. I really hate that in a series! But, remove the typos in this book and the duplicate pages in the other two, and you have a wonderful, entertaining, easy read of enjoyable new characters in exciting worlds.
These books are fun to read, but there are some serious weak spots. There is a lack of consistency between the story arcs. I almost felt like I was reading the script for a TV show.
This was an exciting roller coaster ride. The author needs a proofreader. I was all excited to start reading the next book in the series, and saw that it won’t be released until next Spring! Oh well, it is said that all good things come to those who wait.
An interesting concept with great action and intrigue. There are a few grammatical errors but they are easily overlooked. Otherwise I highly recommend it.
“Playing with Fire” the fourth installment in the “Black Kat” series by Kimberly Gordon, is a great paranormal romance adventure, with a new refreshing approach to superheroes’ powers that have its source in the elements of nature.
The book focuses on the story of fire-shifters. Aislinn and Fiona unable to come to terms with their own powers are derelict and homeless, at the mercy (or more accurately the lack of) of the Rogues in the street, waiting for a wonder that overturns their destiny. Shane Sumner is not wonder but can be just the right solution to their problems. Shane is a venerated fire fighter, a brave guy that goes into each fire as it were fireproof, but Shane lives unravels as dogs and plants begin to speak to him, he maybe telepathic but sure it looks crazy.
On the background the Supers are burying Hugh’s (empty) casket while trying to find out where exactly their missing leader, and Kat still has to solve her own familiar problems on top of the disappearance.
The “Black Kat Series” takes place in a version of our own world, in which so called “supers” have superpowers that can be used for both good and evil. The alternated verse is well-constructed with appealing characters, fast-paced action, interesting twist and a fresh view on superheroes, who don’t have the need to rely on tights and masks to use their powers 😊
Read books in order. Wow, this is a fast paced twisted ride. whose on first, which one is seaking who, who is missing assumed dead, what happened to Hugh? is he still alive? where is he if he is alive. The Rouges are trying to regroupe. The Supers a.k.a Rouge hunters are trying to regroup and find them and finishe the battle-losses on both side make the battle even more intense. The Furies have sent a message-find the Phenix- bring the Phenix to them. Kat the new Leader since Hugh is MIA, is trying to get the Rogue Hunters together, make a plan to finish the Rogues. The unexpected happens. Did Kat really find her brother that has been missing? Is it reallu Hugh who has returned with an unbelievable tale, is it true? What about the "other lost children"? I cant wait for the next books!
Playing with Fire: A Superhero Urban Fantasy (Black Kat Book 4), my first read from author Kimberly Gordon, an author I'd not heard of before getting the opportunity to read & review this book! December seemed to be my month for new authors, January continued the trend, and now February. I quickly realized I'd missed much, coming into a series on the fourth book. None-the-less, a well-written, entertaining read. “I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." I look forward to reading more from this author and in this series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
