Shy and Spirit are facing off against the youthful reincarnation of Spirit’s dead mother in an Arctic wasteland, in case you were wondering if you were reading a manga. But, as usual, it’s not the big stuff that Shy excels at, either the character or the series.

Shy certainly feels like it would not exist on this earth if My Hero Academia hadn’t come ahead of it and it doesn’t quite achieve the reliably strong action of that series and the overarching plotline here remains needlessly convoluted.

It is doing that annoying ‘dole out secrets in the most piecemeal way possible’ and what we’ve already learned has been inscrutable to my ancient eyes, so to say that I could probably care less about all the shenanigans is very close to a lie.

Why bother then? It’s true that if I just wanted something to complain loudly about I would start reading my perennial whipping boy Rent-A-Girlfriend again, frankly. No, this is a whole other sort of story. One where a good character is in an okay-but-only-just plotline.

Teru’s journey to overcome her lack of confidence is a nice character struggle and it’s made all the better by the fact that she is, in every way, a genuine hero. The way it comes across in ways both big and small is really the best parts of the story.

Arguably the best chapter is when she gets pinned down by a would-be reporter for an interview after saving a young boy. It starts off great because the part where she saves the kid is probably the cleanest action in the entire volume and it looks sharp on the page.

As she’s deftly being put on the spot and handling things as awkwardly as ever, Shy quietly reminds the reporter, without really trying, of what writing means to her and what her dream has always been. It’s very clever that, even as she proclaims she’s no hero, Shy is helping somebody.

That inner strength comes through in the moments where she’s wrestling with trying to be a better friend and not be so withdrawn at school as well (you’d think somebody else would put two and two together given how many absences she must take).

Teru learns that she isn’t really alone any more and her developing friendship with Koishikawa is another fun part of the volume. It emphasizes Shy’s dichotomy as somebody who shuns the spotlight, but won’t let their issues get in the way of doing her job when it’s unavoidable.

And, yes, there’s lots of punching at the start, although the evil harlequin doesn’t get hers, which is a shame. I couldn’t tell you much of what happens there - see previous comment about inscrutable action - but if you are all for the power of love and alcohol, I think you’re covered.

That’s probably a slight disservice to the emotional core of Spirit’s story, honestly, but it does come off as a little trite and predictable. Parts of it are okay, while other parts are aggressively hokey. I did like the little flourishes at the end of this plot, but that’s also stuff after the action parts.

Make no mistake, I am not coming back to Shy for the fight scenes. It’s the character growth that makes this and I have liked Teru/Shy since the start and continue to do so. She tries so hard it’s impossible to not want to see her succeed.

3 stars - lots of great little moments here and there, amidst the usual nonsense, makes for an enjoyable yet mixed volume. When it’s good, however, it is really darn good.

The confrontation from the previous volume ends, showing Teru isn't the only one who can end these resolutions peacefully. It's followed by the usual bunch of little stand-alone chapters showing how Teru's life is going, but the last one ends with an intriguing new development.

Heart-warming mother and daughter moment. Even heroes get sick sometimes. Trust grows with experience.

Interesting resolution to where we left off. Not a meh volume, but good progression. Our heroine is growing up! Her relationships are solid and it's good that she can rely on others. A good read.

This part has a very cute scene between Spirits and her mother. Also the new character Ai Tennoji is an interesting addition to the story.
Curious to find out more about Ai in upcoming parts.
