I always knew darkness crept through this city, like a shadow, it never really goes away, always watching, always waiting. People sin and people kill, it's a way of life. I just never expected to be thrown into the middle of a war I had no hope of surviving. Alexander Silver is as brutal as he is beautiful. A Devil in disguise. The man destined to end me. I didn't go looking for trouble and yet it found me nonetheless. I can either join it or let it crush me.
Lex
Wren Valentine. My sweet Little Bird. I had no right dragging her into my world of violence and bloodshed, but I did it anyway. I am the King, sitting on a throne of chaos. She was supposed to be the enemy, a means to an end but she became much more than that. In this life, you take what you want and strike down those who oppose you.
She is mine.
And I'll paint these streets red if anyone dares to take her.
Little Bird is Book 1 in the Twisted City Duet. If you like dark, dirty and suspenseful romance, this one's for you!
Warning! This is a dark romance and contains themes common in dark romances including, kidnap, violence, drug and alcohol use, sexual content and strong language. It is not recommended for readers under the age of 18.
Ria Wilde is an international bestselling author. You can expect heat, heart & heas! She currently resides in the UK where getting lost in her books, and plotting the next best way to break some hearts is a daily occurrence. A lover of all things steamy and sinful, she also has a big soft spot for small town romances & cowboys, but morally gray will forever be her favorite color!
HEA's & Spice, but there's no promise it'll be an easy ride, and be prepared to fall in love with her morally gray men and the sassy queens that steal their hearts.
I would have never guessed this is the author's debut novel. If she did this good with book one, I could only imagine what book two will be like. Read the trigger warnings; it’s a dark romance, and there are several. Also dirty and deliciously dark. On my dark scale, it’s medium gray.
What do you do in the mafia world when an enemy kills your loved one? You get revenge when they least expect it. Enters Wren. Lex kidnaps Wren to seek revenge on his enemy. Let's just say the kidnapping didn't go as expected. Wren is bat shit crazy, and the girl can fight and is an excellent marksman. I laughed so hard at Lex’s reaction I was crying. Everyone has underestimated this little killer; she is fierce and not scared of anything. She is my hero.
There is a ton of push/pull between the two. Both are drawn to each other like a moth to the flame and are pissed off about it. I usually say I am waiting for them to kill each other or rip their clothes off. But these two try and kill each other while ripping their clothes off. Lex and Wren are perfect for each other. Both are borderline on unhealthy behavior and relationship.
That cliffhanger is a doozy, I was literally sitting on the edge, and I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for us. My only constructive criticism is they were a small amount of repetition. Kudos to Ria Wilde; I am impressed.
“I’ll kill them all,” I declare. “Slowly. Painfully. If it’s war the Valentine’s want, then it’s war I’ll give them.”
“Once we’re done here,” he steps forward and I notice the limp, how he holds himself and favors his left leg. Good, I hope it fucking hurts, “there won’t be even an ember of life left in you. You can keep your fire now, Wren, but just know, I’ll snuff those flames out quicker than you can even blink.”
With Little Bird, what starts out as a typical enemies to lovers revenge plot is quickly distinguished by the author's atmospheric, smooth writing style. While this is a mafia romance, I appreciated the author's decision to leave the setting rather vague ~ this decision allowed me to suspend disbelief, and I imagined this taking place in a dystopian-like setting. (This may not have been the author's intention at all, but it's one of the advantages of leaving certain details vague in a story).
I feel I should point out this is a positive 3 star rating for me, and I'm going to do my best to point out the positives, since I think this will work for a lot of readers. One of the best selling points is the heroine. She has been trained to fight by her father, she has agency, and her own personality. She's strong and fights back with out being irritating. If you're craving a book where both main characters are a bit psycho and fight each other before falling for each other - this is your book:
He withdraws a blade, turning it over in his hand, the steel catching in the light as he rolls it, pressing the sharpened edge against his palm hard enough to slice the skin and allow beads of crimson to bloom on the surface. He smirks down at me, a cruel tilt of his lips that strikes fear right down to the pit of my soul. "You're funny."
Slowly, he pushes the blade down, the tip biting into my bottom lip and I have no choice but to open my mouth. There’s a sting on the sensitive flesh where he’s cut me, and I feel more blood rolling slowly over my lip and onto my chin. His shoulders square and his spine straightens as the pupils of his eyes seem to devour his irises."
-->Thus proceeds a violently bloody make-out session.
"You want me to say it?” He growls. “Yes.” Suddenly his hand comes around my throat and he shoves me onto the bed, flat on my back with his weight pressing into me. My thighs cradle his hips and I don’t miss the hardness pressing into my clit through the material of the sweats. Arousal floods me and my hips grind against the sensation, needy and wanton despite knowing how dangerous this is.The words push in at the corners of my mind, through the fog of lust running wild inside of me, I realize how much of an idiot I am being. His tongue duels with mine, heavy with shameless need and desire and I match the pace, pushing back. I dust my fingers up his side, feeling the muscles jump under my fingertips beneath his shirt and I follow them around to his back. The hard butt of his gun hits the heel of my hand, but I don’t linger long enough for him to realize I’ve felt it. I just need to get it.
-->Thus proceeds an attempted murder
There's a violent push pull between this couple that was slightly addicting to read towards the beginning.
Some mafia intrigue occurs, a twist, and the book ended.
Huge positives include the author's writing style (very impressive for her debut book) and her ability to describe characters (their looks, personalities), and the development of the chemistry between this couple.
My constructive feedback would be to try to write 'tighter' or...idk. Maybe create a faster pace that's more rooted in plot? Idk I sort of hate throwing out this criticism since I recognize it's vague and may not be helpful. Ultimately, I felt the writing could have been tighter. There could have been more development into the background of the two families and what lead to the revenge (though enough background was given), more character development for the male main character. I felt the female main character was very well-developed. Possibly if the male main character had been more developed I might have found this more compelling? Despite these criticisms this author has writing chops and I'll be keeping my eye out for anything else she publishes.

Idk. Just not feeling it. Some grammar mistakes and the writing doesn't completely flow. I didn't like how the heroine is supposed to be tough and yet has literally the worst comebacks. And I don't like how the hero is supposed to be smart and ruthless and yet does hard drugs (that was such a turnoff).

I had high hopes for this one, but it fell flat. I skimmed quite a bit and didn't feel like I missed much.
My review won't be long as I don't particularly remember much even though I finished it just yesterday. It took me a while to finish it too and I pretty much contemplated whether or not to read the second book, but I decided to go ahead since I needed to know more about The Syndicate and some side characters.
I was really disturbed by Valentine and his treatment of his daughter, and it honestly gave me massive creepy vibes from him.
The ending was intense and how it all played out, I feel like they might have gotten too comfortable and misunderstood the severity of the situation, especially when someone is cornered or desperate.
Also, the use of ‘’Little bird’’ was so excessive after a while.
Mafia romance ? I guess this is considered mafia !?!? Idk I just know I really liked. This is the story of Ren and Lex, she is the daughter of the enemy and he wants to use her for his revenge and kill her. She doesn’t know her real father, she doesn’t know he is the enemy, she doesn’t know Lex Silver owns the city and the crime in it. She truly is an innocent in this game. But being an innocent doesn’t mean she is naive or doesn’t know how to protect herself, she was trained in self defense, weapons and tricks in fight her whole life, she know how to use her size to her advantage and do what she can because obviously in a one on one fight with a bigger man she doesn’t have the advantage. I liked a lot, she is feisty and kinda funny. Lex can’t control her and obviously tale as old as time he completely falls for her. This book ends in a little bit of a pickle and I am going to the second immediately.
As far as debut novels go, this one sets the standard pretty high. Ria Wilde delivers a catching story, with a hot anti hero and a kick-ass heroine to satisfy a demanding palate; a nice plot with the right dose of mystery and suspense all this mix is balanced with a nice amount of steam and sexiness. The cliffy at the end quite a nasty fall.
Alexander Silver (Lex) packs the right gear to be an antihero worthy of this title, lethal, domineering, sexy as sin, like Wren rightly points out "𝑰𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒊𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂 𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔"
He’s the king, the city belongs to him he rules it with an iron fist and he shows no mercy. Furthermore what makes Lex the uncontested winner in my book is the fact that he isn’t intimidated by a strong woman! Quite the opposite, he’s so confident in his masculinity that he’s actually attracted by Wren’s strength and smart mouth.
Wren Valentine is intelligent, sharp and a beautiful sexy bomb, don’t let her small frame deceive you into thinking she can be easily overthrown. She can kick your ass and knows how to look after herself, she isn’t naïve but there is a lot she doesn’t know.
Lex puts his plan in motion to take Wren out, that’s only the first step into bringing his mortal enemy down, shame things don’t always go according to plans… Wren has no intention to become a puppet for some alpha egomaniac, 𝒏𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒔𝒆𝒙𝒚 𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒔... with a superiority complex. Her life was perfectly fine before Lex bulldozed into it.
Two people who hate each other, both want to get rid of the other … then what is that pull bringing them together? Why can’t their bodies get the memos their brains are trying to send? Wren and Lex may declare war to each other but neither can deny the chemistry drawing them together.
The story is told in dual POV, the narrative tempo steady making this tale an easy to enjoy reading, there were some repetitions here and there, and sometimes I had difficulties adjusting to the abrupt change in tense in the same sentence.
Overall this was a very good debut novel, I can see some nice potential in this author, I wish her the best for her writing career and I’ll be patiently waiting for book two of this duet.
Little Bird was absolutely fantastic. I loved the chemistry between Wren and Lex and could not read this fast enough. This was an amazing enemies to lover romance with a connection that could not be denied. I also loved how there were so many secrets in this story that exploded when they came to light. Wren and Lex were crazy sexy and I can't wait to jump into book 2! ~Ratula ❤️
Holy crap! I freaking loved this!! I listened to the audiobook narrated by Lucy Rivers & Joe Arden (a ROCKSTAR pairing for dark romance). They absolutely killed it. I couldn’t stop listening. Joe brought his dark, growly side out to play, and he held nothing back! And Lucy’s voice is just the absolute perfect counterpart, it soft and sensual and together these two are hot AF! They set out to destroy us, and they succeeded 🔥🔥🔥.
Lex is a true king. Alpha and dominating, he knows he owns the city and he will stop at nothing to make sure everyone knows it. Wren! Wren is so strong willed! She has a stubborn streak, and she’s feisty! Yet she still had that soft feminine side.
This story had so many twists and turns that kept me hooked and wanting more. Plus it’s EXTRA SPICY 🌶️. Makes for an absolutely bingeworthy audio experience!
“I’ll follow,” I promise. “Wherever you go, I’ll be one step right behind you.”
I was disappointed I didn't enjoy this read as much as I wanted it to. The plotline was definitely hot and cold; one minute I love it, but the next I'm kind of what am I reading and why am I reading it. It's a short read, and the pacing of the book is fast. Hence why, the romance was instant.
I sometimes don't mind the romance was instant, but the problem with Little Bird's instant romance is there doesn't feel like there was chemistry. Their romance started with lust; the turnover of love felt sudden and out of nowhere. Which turns me off.
The likeable part of the plotline definitely happened towards the end of the book. I enjoy the action we still get in the mafia world and that cliffhanger definitely up the game of the read.
"She doesn’t hate me. Not at all and the feeling is mutual. The feeling is dangerous. It’s what’s likely to get me killed at the end of this but I’ve never been good with warnings. I’m the motherfucking king and this is my kingdom and all kingdoms need a queen."
I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review****
Wow! It starts off with action! It pulled me in and had my attention very quickly! Has an alpha hole, possessive I’ll burn the world down for you, anti hero. Wren is not a helpless female lead, she is badass and smart mouthed. She’s tiny but trained to fight back. Lex Silver is YUM! The I hate that I want you feels! And did I mention THE SPICE?! 😍 I really enjoyed this book, the cliff hanger is a killer though! I need the second book ASAP!
(I was gifted an ALC of this audiobook, and this is my honest review).
I was HOOKED on this audiobook! There are definitely triggers, so please check warnings. It is a dark romance set in a mafia world with families in a war over control of the city. Lex is a very dominant, possessive, hard man who wants revenge on his enemy by kidnapping his daughter. There is a lot of violence and fighting between them, but also a very strong attraction.
The biggest critique I have of the writing, is that the author tends to repeat words within the same sentence. For example, "he pushed me behind him as someone closed the door behind him." I didn't really notice it much at first, but then it became very obvious when it happened. And it may have just been more apparent with the audio.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, so you'll want to have Twisted King ready to go. I would also say that if you liked Haunting and Hunting Adeline by HD Carlton, you will probably love this duet as well. It has a lot of similarities in the personalities of the characters and in the plot. The biggest difference is that in Little Bird/Twisted King, there is a CLEAR message of consent btw the two main characters. There is also discussion of sexual assault/rape, but this does NOT happen to the MFC. It happens to side characters and there is discussion about it.
So if you were curious to read/hear HD Carlton's duet, but felt nervous that they may be too intense, but you like the idea of the storyline, this is a much better option for you.
As far as the narration in the audiobook, Joe Arden and Lucy Rivers did a fabulous job with the emotion and content of the story. It is duel style narration. I really enjoyed Lucy's female voice and how she expressed the strong willed nature of the FMC. Her male voice matched Joe's pacing and tone pretty well, even though I feel like her male voice is not one of my favorites among female narrators. This is completely a matter of personal preference.
This was my first dark romance narrated by Joe Arden and he did not disappoint! His breath control is very impressive, and I love that he tends to narrate much faster than the average. He is also amazing at enunciating hard consonants, which added to the anger and dominance the listener feels from the MMC.
There was also incredible spice in this audiobook! So be prepared for that.
Death didn't scare me. I am death. I am a monster. The devil. And that little bird is mine.
Ria Wilde is brand spanking new to the scene and for her grand entrance she has gifted us a deliciously dark debut!
I got the pleasure of BETA reading this and let me tell you, it's got everything us dark romance lovers are after:
🖤 A Sinful romance with unbelievable steam 🩸 Bloodshed 🗡 Rival mafia families 🔥 Sexy AF Alpha 💄 A strong, sassy and an absolute firecracker of heroin
I'm limited on what I can say because we're a little way off release, and I've sat on this review for a good few weeks now but I can't hold it in anymore, especially since we've just had the cover reveal!!! And isn't it a beauty 🔥
I have to tell you guys what you've got coming your way because you need to be getting hyped the hell up for it!
Lex is SO FINE! He is dominant, brooding, cold, calculating, on a war path for revenge. Everything you're going to want from a mafia king and so much more. He's going to have your kindle melting with how hot he is 🥵
Wren is feisty, strong willed, small but damn mighty! She's not the type of girl to roll over and do as she's told, in fact she'll go out of her way to do the opposite. Even in circumstances she never saw herself in, she still manages to thrive. We stan a strong female and Ria has definitely given us one!
There's insane tension between these two, which leads to twists and turns that you won't even see coming, so buckle in and be prepared for some shocks along the way.
Coming August! Add it to your goodreads, preorder it, sign up for the book tour, hell even book the day off work to read it and make sure this masterpiece is on your radar!
This DEBUT READ by Ria Wilde, was WILD. I instantly connected and got hooked with the first sentence. This is a Suspense filled Captive/Captor Romance with Mafia vibes.
5/5 ⭐️ 3.5-4/5 🔥
TW I would consider light to me but maybe not for you: captive/captor, kidnapping, murder, violence, drug/alcohol use
“Little Bird” AAHHH, this nickname is just so HOT
Wren Lawson is out enjoying a night of fun and relaxation but is kidnapped instead. The sexual tension Wren and Alexander had was making my kindle HAWT. Alexander Silver is out for revenge and it involves Wren who is now caught in the middle with secrets getting exposed and the truth being revealed. I’m obsessed with the way Ria wrote this and no less being her first book. It’s absolutely amazing and beautifully suspense-fully written.
The suspense, the action we get in this Enemies to Lovers Romance had be turning each page. THE ENDING WRECKED ME!!!
“She’s a means to an end. Not even a bargaining chip. She’s revenge. Cold hard revenge”
“Welcome to my twisted city, little bird, together we can be formidable”
🗡Mafia vibes 🖤Enemies to Lovers ❤️ Family Rivalry 🗡Captor/Captivity

Also, they don't talk, they just fuck harder. She talks more to his second in command.
What a ride. You would not believe that this is a debut novel. It is fantastic and ends on a cliffhanger that will have you begging for more.
Sinfully dark and dirty, the story is about Wren who has been relatively sheltered her entire life until she is thrust into the criminal underworld by Alexander Silver. The devil incarnate who kidnaps Wren to send a message.
With all intentions of destroying Wren, a spanner is thrown in the works when they each have a darkness that calls to each other. Will they give in to the desire, or will they burn the world down with their attempt to fight against each other.
This book was pure fun, even though I did have a few small complaints here and there. But, for this being one of Ria's earlier works, I am still impressed at what was executed! I am a big fan of cliffhangers and I felt that the one at the end of Little Bird (Twisted City #1) left enough want, that once I decide to pick up the second half of this Duet, I feel that I will have that satisfactory conclusion to this story.
THE REVIEW FOR THE BOOK: Little Bird GENRE: Dark romance AUTHOR: Ria Wilde TROPE: contemporary romance, dark romance, mafia, enemies to lovers, kidnapping TYPE: Twisted City Duet #1 POV: Dual POV MY RATING: 5.0 Stars
This is the debut novel by Ria Wilde. I was blown away!
The story of Lex whose mother was murdered by Marcus Valentine. Alexander Silver and his family have run their city like Kings for over a hundred years. Marcus wants to take control of the city and rages war on the Silver family. After months of planning, Lex kidnaps Wren Valentine (Marcus’s daughter) for the purpose of torturing and killing her. Somewhere along the way, hate turns to an uncontrollable lust. Lex knows that he shouldn’t keep Wren. The easiest thing to do would be to kill her and send a message to Marcus. Somehow, he just can’t bring himself to do it.
I was really impressed with Ria’s debut novel. The first bit of the book was cryptic and took me a few chapters to really get into the story. This first book in the Twisted City Duet really focuses on the relationship between Lex and Wren. The two of them are so hard headed and stubborn. They shouldn’t want to be with one another but the sexual chemistry is something that neither of them can deny. The smut scenes in the book were spicy. I absolutely enjoyed the fighting between the couple. It felt like a form of erotic foreplay. There is this underlying mystery involving this other secret organization that leaves the reader with more questions than answers. The ending! The reader is left with a massive cliffhanger. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I’m in love with Lex and Wren’s story.
This is a dark romance novel so there are trigger warnings. If you’re a fan of dark mafia romance, then you’re going to enjoy this book.
I was provided an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
A veces.
Gahhhhh!!! I loved Wren and Lex sooo much!! That ending is brutal AF! These two are seriously perfect for one another I love the story, the plot the characters freaking brilliant!!! Absolutely can’t wait for the next one!! Seriously I was on the edge of my seat holding my breath and then the ending hit and my heart was in my throat!!!
This debut by Ria is intense, hot, action packed and not what I was expecting - I loved it and am left begging for the next book (there is a cliffhanger). Wren is one of helluva heroine - this young woman is a fighter that can hold her own, isn’t afraid to take chances, and is very smart. I adore her smart replies and fierce spirit. Lex is the monster that everyone fears - he is ruthless, smart, and not afraid to go to great lengths to keep his crown on tight. When it comes to Wren, he finds his softer side that he though he lost long ago. I enjoyed seeing how these two tore down each other’s defenses - all the while the plot gets thicker. The twists are insane and the ending was definitely a jaw-dropper of the year. Ria has me in her grip as I am on board for this intense series. I can’t wait to see what is to come for Lex and Wren in this intense series.
This is my first time reading her book but lemme tell you I'm shocked. This book y'all is so good. The overall plot was so well thought. Falling in love with your captive is something that always intrigued me. Gotta say one of the best enemies to lover book I've read. This book is more than just heat. The attraction between the Wren and Lex is so intimate raw passionate!
Also the cliffhanger at the end!! I can't wait to read the next book!!
First book I have read from this author and omg it won't be the last!! I love a good dark mafia romance and this hit the the spot, from the action to the spice it was just perfect. I couldn't put it down.
