The Girl Who Couldn't Leave

It was a yard. Only a yard to the kerb. What could happen to her in that distance? Was it too far away to still be safe?

Fiona Dexter isn’t the girl she used to be.

It’s been five years since she moved into the house on leafy Wellington Drive, with its bright red door and colourful flowers in the garden. Since then, she’s never stepped outside. It’s the only way she can live without constantly looking over her shoulder – the one chance she has of keeping the past in the past.

If she could only walk out of the front door, her life would be different. She could find her way back to the person she once was. She could trade nights on the sofa for a cinema trip with friends. She could meet her parents at the café around the corner, with its delicious brownies. Maybe she could even fall in love.

Except for Fiona, those few yards to her front gate might as well be a million miles. Outside, there’s no telling who might be waiting…

Then one day single mother Bethany shows up holding two-year-old Evie, desperate for help, and their arrival might just change everything.

Once Fiona lets them in, she finds the safety of her carefully planned days has lost its spark. Staying inside is still the safest option, but now she’s felt the warmth of Evie’s hugs and danced her socks off with Bethany, she realises what she’s been missing. But can Fiona let go of her past for a chance at happiness? And when she’s put to the test, will love be more powerful than fear?

This hopeful and heart-warming read will remind you that life continues no matter where you are, and opening the door is the first step on the way back to happiness. Fans of Jojo Moyes, Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain will love this emotional and uplifting story.

This is the most beautifully written, engaging and uplifting book that I have read in a very long time. Fiona hasn't left her house in years. Everything in her day is controlled and accounted for. Her life is ordered and neat until an adorable two-year-old girl and her mum enter Fiona's life. What follows is a warm, charming story of friendship, love and courage that will have you rooting for every one of the brilliantly drawn, true-life characters. Rather than reading a story I felt that I was witnessing the inception and growth of lifelong bonds and that I was right there with them all during every struggle and every triumph. It was emotional yet touchingly funny in parts and I enjoyed every single page.

I got this onsale, and was just going to glance at the first few pages, and found myself sucked into the story and the characters.

It's full of English banter, and it's sweet, heartfelt and very relatable. Our MC is Fiona, and she is the eponymous Girl Who Couldn't Leave. She's agoraphobic, and never leaves the limits of her property. We don't find out the full reason for this until later, and while it may seen a slight over-reaction, at the same time as someone who flirts with my own agoraphobia, it's easy to see how seemingly small problems can easily become big ones, when we allow them to manifest with fear and lack of connection and help.

While Fiona is alone, she doesn't feel lonely. She knows about all the goings on in her neighbourhood, and ensures she has fully scheduled days with her work as a Ghost Writer, including exercise and outside time in her garden. She can get everything she needs delivered thank you very much - including a hairdresser that comes to her door! She has companionship in her adorable blue Budgie, Wesley - and the weekly visits from her overbearing Mother, and more subdued father. Yet fear is quick to strike, and disallows her to change. She's safe inside her carefully constructed walls.

One day, she finds her barrier down, when the 'busy Mum' from across the road knocks on her door, asking her to look after 2 year old Evie for a half an hour, while she goes for a personal doctors appointment. Fiona is wary at first, a little scared, but finds herself agreeing - and actually enjoying the time spent with little Evie, and her alluring Mother.

The two spend more and more time, getting to know one another. Starting a very slow burn relationship, that takes the whole novel to truly fulfill, and even then it's very sweet and there's no actual love scenes on the page. We discover a lot about Bethany, Evie's mother and her circumstances. She works hard, and has little support - but what support she does have, and the blossoming friendship and more with Fiona seems fulfilling. But it's hard when someone you fancy doesn't want to leave the house.

What I love is all the intimate, yet seemingly boring details of everyday life - it's very much slice of life, and that style may not be for everyone. I felt it gave a tender approach to getting to know the characters and really helped us bond with them, and see what they are going through. My one complaint would be I wish for the romance to be a bit more impactful, and romantic. But at same time, I suppose it's real life appropriate. It's not all sudden roses and love edicts. It's more real and down-to-earth with just doing things for someone you like, because you can, and because it makes things easier for them and because you want to help.

It's a comfortable, lovely read, that I recognized a lot of my own issues in. It's probably not for everyone, but I related so keenly, to so many of the storylines herein, that I couldn't help but be charmed, and grateful.

This was interesting, well executed and I liked both MCs. But I'd appreciate if the "easing back into society" bit was a bit more detailed. Reading about those struggles could be very interesting.
My only big issue is with Fiona's mother because she is every bit as much of an arse as Bethany's, yet somehow there are no consequences for her "damaging behaviour".

After the last year who couldn’t relate just a little bit to Fiona Dexter’s story. Fiona lives alone and only has visits from a handful of people. She rarely ventures beyond her garden but you don’t get to find out why until much further into the book. From the safety of her own house, she can see her neighbours going about their daily business, but doesn’t have anything to do with them. That is until one day when neighbour Bethany, asks if she’ll babysit her young daughter Evie while she attends an urgent medical appointment. A friendship begins to blossom but can Fiona build up the courage to begin a new life?

This was truly a heart-warming read, showing the power of true love and friendship. I loved the main characters within this book, initially being able to relate to both Fiona and Bethany equally. I was intrigued early on in the book as to why Fiona felt the need to stay at home, but all is explained as the story moves on. I loved seeing how Bethany’s daughter Evie did something to Fiona which no one else could do, and it was captivating watching Fiona’s confidence grow through her looking after Evie. Bethany’s storyline was emotional and brought tears to my eyes at times but as it moved on it became so much more uplifting!!

With an easy-to-read storyline, I was hooked into the story right from the beginning. A little bit of me was curious as to where the story was going, but mainly I was captivated by the growing friendship between two women who you would never have imagined being friends at all! I certainly didn’t expect how their story was going end, but what a wonderful way it did!! Completely different to what I imagined the book to be, but you’ve got to love a happy ending and this was certainly one with an abundance of love, happiness and new beginnings! Of course, the star of the book has to be Fiona’s budgie, Wesley, who must have been very tired running up and down his little ladder all the time! This was a captivating and wonderfully written book which I would definitely recommend!

The Girl Who Couldn't Leave by Catherine Miller is a beautifully uplifting story about what it means to finally find home in the most unconventional of ways.

Fiona has not left her home for five years, building a wall around herself as protection from an often cruel world. Working as a ghost writer out of her house, Fiona is caught by surprise when, approached by single mother Bethany asking her to watch her two year old daughter Evie, she finds herself opening her carefully contained world to the two strangers. But as little Evie charms the reclusive Fiona, she begins to imagine a world where she can find love and happiness in being with others, and a friendship is formed that will forever alter the life that she has constructed as a means of self-preservation.

This is a wonderful read that will leave you feeling hopeful in the possibility of new beginnings.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.

Has the pandemic changed you? Increased anxiety? Fear of leaving your home? I have a deeper appreciation of what the protagonist in this book is facing. Although Fiona has stayed inside by choice, staying inside as mandated by the government in an attempt to curb the spread of this virus has produced similar anxious feelings in me. Like Fiona, I found ways to invest in myself in order to survive. Reading has been a life saver!

Please consider taking a journey into 14 Wellington Drive and let Fiona tell you about the knock on the door that changed her whole life. Her neighbour across the street, ‘On-the-run-mom’ a.k.a. Bethany, claims that Fiona’s kindness may well have saved her life. A single mom with nobody to rely on, Bethany takes a chance on asking Fiona to look after her toddler while she goes to a doctor’s appointment. It’s a good thing Bethany didn’t cancel as she discovers she now needs surgery. Fiona has agoraphobia and it took everything she had just to open the door and talk to her neighbour. Once she allows the outside to ‘come in’ it changes everything.

I loved how nosy she became as a necessary part of her survival. I found being home made me more aware of neighbourhood patterns, too, and, like Fiona, I found myself naming my neighbours.

I laughed when I found out what Reuben in #16 was really doing!

I’m sure it’s no coincidence that this book is published in June. (June 25, 2021)

Miller will remind you that crossing the threshold, although difficult, is what it takes to finding friendship, love and new beginnings.

“Home isn’t always a place. Sometimes it’s a person.”

Review for 'The Girl Who Couldn't Leave' by Catherine Miller

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Catherine Miller, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 22nd June 2021.

This is the second book I have read by this author. I have previously read Catherine's 'The Missing Piece' which I highly recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Jojo Moyes, Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain will love this emotional and uplifting story.' I am a huge fan of all three of those authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Catherine and if this is half as good as 'The Missing Piece' it is sure to be an epic read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of 46 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I have actually visited and had holidays in England on several occasions so am looking forward to seeing if I recognise anywhere that Catherine has based the book on.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Fiona Dexter and Bethany. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

Congratulations Catherine on yet another fantastic page turner!!! An absolute must read with vivid descriptions that sets the scene for you. The cover, title and synopsis suit the storyline perfectly.

I think one of the things I enjoyed most about this storyline is that although it was heart warming and very funny on several occasions it actually carries an extremely important message on how vital it is to get your smear tests done regularly. Congratulations Catherine, I don't belive I've ever actually read another book that highlights the importance of smears before especially during such an enjoyable storyline. Ladies get yourselves booked in!!! Nobody actually enjoys having them done but they can save your life. I can actually relate to Bethan to a certain degree as I myself have had to have a biopsy done after abnormal cells were revealed but thankfully that was as far as it went. Anyway enough about my medical history!!! The storyline is realistic and filled with love, laughter, tears, important messages, fun, tragedies, romance and more. I was completely absorbed from the first page until late at night when I could only put it down because I'd finished it. A light hearted full of fun page turner with a serious message. I loved the ironic ending with the reality of Covid and it was only when I noticed the date on the last chapter I'd mentioned to my partner that I wondered if Catherine was going to bring up Covid. I thought this was a brilliant move as it makes the storyline even more realistic and its only the second book I've read that has mentioned it, the first being the one prior to this I read. I loved the fact that each chapter told you where it was set and it helped me picture it all alot easier.

I was completely invested in the characters and I loved Fiona, Bethany and Evie's characters. They were all larger than life, realistic, strong and very likeable. I really enjoyed watching their friendship and relationship between not only each other grow but also Bethany's friendship with other neighbours. The storyline of the noises from Sarah was hilarious and I enjoyed getting to know Heather via it all. Kev was a complete waste of space and sadly very realistic. These are definitely very well defined characters who will stay with me for a long time. I really enjoyed Fiona's development throughout the book and loved watching her grow from strength to strength. It was a shame that both Bethany and Fiona's mothers werent very supportive of their children and grandchild but I did like Fiona's dad. A great eclectic mix of characters who worked perfectly for this storyline.

ABSOLUTELY loved this book Catherine and here's to hoping you've started on your next page turner. Watch out JoJo Moyes, Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain you have some serious competition here!!

Overall an unputdownable addictive romcom with a serious message.

Genres covered in this novel include Fiction, Romance and Humorous Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of JoJo Moyes, Jodi Picoult, Diane Chamberlain and anyone who loves a good read.

The Girl Who Couldn't Leave by Catherine Miller Heartwarming story of love, hope and overcoming fears. Engaging characters, Fiona, Bethany and especially little Evie who is adorable. Love the quote “Home isn't always a place. Sometimes, it's a person” which is a reality highlighted in the story.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

Fiona Dexter lives alone, with only a small handful of people visiting her, she spends most of her time alone. She rarely ventures further than her garden, and from the safety of her own home, she watches her neighbours going about their usual day-to-day lives, but still she has nothing to do with any of them.

That all begins to change when her neighbour Bethany knocks on her door, asking her to look after her young daughter whilst she attends an urgent medical appointment. Fiona feels unable to refuse, and before long, a friendship begins to blossom between these two women, but the question still remains - will Fiona be able to start living life again?.

This really was a powerful and incredibly emotional read. I can relate to Fiona in so many ways, as I too have found myself unable to leave my home for almost two years. We don't learn until much later in this book as to why Fiona has confined herself within the walls of her home, but when we do, gosh - my heart really connected with this woman.

I adored how this storyline focused on the importance of friendship and how it provided Fiona with the support she didn't realise she needed to begin living her life once more. As Fiona began spending more time with Evie - Bethany's young daughter, you really sense that something has shifted within her, and her confidence begins to grow steadily from this point forward.

With an utterly engrossing, immersive storyline that had me invested from the very beginning, this is certainly one of those stories that will remain in my heart for a very long time indeed.

Thank you Netgalley for the eARC of this book.

I was a little confused at first as I didn't realise that the chapters were from 2 different characters but as I was reading this it became easier to read.

I'm happy that I got the opportunity to read such a cute story, I loved little Evie she was just too adorable and I liked how the characters relationships as they grow throughout the story. What's not to love, there's cute kids, women's health and frisky neighbours. This book was easy to read and very easily able to grab anyone's attention.

Fiona leads a reclusive life, working and exercising at home, never venturing further than the front garden. Bethany is a single mum to 2 year old Evie, struggling to cope alone. These two neighbours are thrown together when Bethany needs help and an unlikely friendship develops.
The Girl Who Couldn't Leave is an emotional book about friendship and our human need for social contact.
Fiona hints at some trauma in her past which has caused her to retreat to the safety of her own home. Bethany is determined to give her daughter the best but medical concerns make her desperate for help. Despite both being young, they seem to have little in common except for living in the same street.
The plot is delivered from the third person perspective of both women, giving us insight into their lives whilst keeping a slight emotional distance. The panic of being left in sole charge of a toddler was amusing and relatable. I enjoyed the inclusion of Wesley the budgie which helps Fiona to bond with Evie. I had no idea that budgies and parakeets are the same bird!
There are some big issues dealt with in the book but they are handled sensitively which leaves a warm feeling due to the human qualities that shine from the lead characters.
The Girl Who Couldn't Leave is an uplifting story of friendship and I will be on the lookout for more of Catherine Miller's books.

The Girl Who Couldn't Leave is the first book I have read by Catherine Miller and I was a great read. I was hooked within the first ten pages and was beautifully written throughout. Fiona Dexter isn’t the girl she used to be and she has not left her house Wellington Drive, for over five years, every day is planned on what she is going to do, staying inside is the safest thing Fiona can do. Until one day there was a knock on the door which catches her by surprise when she opens it, to find a single mother called Bethany asking a total stranger to look after her two year old daughter Evie, who is desperate for help. Fiona can not turn them away and finds herself opening up her safe place her home to two strangers. As little beautiful Evie charms the reclusive Fiona, she begins to imagine a world outside her front door again, where she can find happiness and love being with others and a friendship is formed that will forever alter the life that she has constructed as a means of self-preservation.

But, does it have a happy ending?

This book is very emotional with a good ending. I will be reading more books from Catherine in the future and I really enjoyed this book.

I highly recommend this book.

This is a charming, warm hearted book that dealt very sensitively with agoraphobia, single parenting, fear and harassment while creating a pleasing story about love and family. Fiona has spent years never leaving the confines of her home and garden until a neighbour, Bethany, approaches her to ask for a favour. Could Fiona watch Evie, Bethany’s two year old daughter, so that she can make her medical appointment without dragging her along? Will Fiona open her home to a stranger? Will she ever be able or willing to again enter the outside world? The author has created some expertly crafted characters for this story including my favourite, the adorable Evie. I liked the pace of the tale and the imaginative situations that the author dreamed up for entertaining at home; skills that would come in handy during the pandemic. I wish I had had some of these ideas myself a few years ago. I enjoyed the ending but wished that it had been expanded upon with more details. All in all, this is a captivating story with rich characters and just the right amount of tension and love to make a memorable tale. The author is new to me and I look forward, in future, to checking out some of her other books.

Such an emotional, yet uplifting story that captured my attention right from the very beginning of the book. I could identify with Fiona at times, her dependency on her home and routine is something I find myself relying on too at times. It was marvellous to see her eventually overcome her fears and let others into her home and life. Evie was the key that opened Fiona’s heart, and it was lovely to see their connection grow and flourish. Bethany has her own background stories, and like Fiona she too is living a restricted life and her situation changes too when she knocks on Fiona’s door in desperation.
This is a beautiful book about friendships and taking a chance. It was wonderful to see all the characters lift each other and to progress with their lives, stronger and happier for finding each other.
Wesley the budgie was completely adorable, and I loved how his situation mirrored the story at times, very clever writing!
One thing that you will need while you read this is cake! 🍰 just to give you all a heads up!!🧁

A big thank you to Netgalley for offering a digital copy of this amazing book.

It’s a story about a girl Fiona Dexter who hasn’t left her house in five years. Everything changes when a single mother Bethany and her daughter Evie, enter’s Fiona’s life. Their is reason for Fiona to lock herself from outside world. Bethany and Evie’s presence in her will make her realise it’s time to face her past and to overcome it.

The two main characters of this story are Fiona and Bethany, and how wonderful they are, tangled, scared, resilient, persistent and beautiful. Evie is adorable and budgie I would love to have a pet like that.

This is most beautifully and a feel good story I have ever read. It’s a story of friendship, love and courage. Writing is simple yet effective as all the emotions were connected so gracefully. There is a quote in this book, “Home isn’t always a place. Sometimes, it’s a person” which is in a way true and not far from reality. I do highly recommend this book for a light and happy reading.

Fiona has a problem with leaving her house, she hasn't left it in 5 years. She also doesn't let other people into her house (other than her parents) until the knock on her door from a cute 2 year old.....

Bethany is a single mum of two year old Evie. Her ex, Kev, turns up when he feels like it and is a bit of a waste of space, all in all. Bethany makes amazing cakes and she juggles her job with the demands of single parenting, until a health scare upsets the balance.

This story was beautifully crafted, with all the feels that this author is known for. It explores what it means to be family, in whatever form it takes, and how important it is to look after your health. I thought Bethany and Fiona were just lovely and I felt for them both, with their mothers the way they were and the lack of support in some quarters. Everyone should have a Jill and Will in their lives, those two were so cute! I would have liked the author to explore the source of Fiona's issues a little more though :)

4.5 stars from me.

I’m of mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it was a pleasant story about overcoming fears, finding friendships, and learning to trust people. Fiona’s growth was interesting in this regard. I particularly liked Fiona’s interactions with another neighbor because they illustrated that all people have problems to deal with and it’s how the individual chooses to address their issues that defines their self-worth. While I thought that the themes and messages of the story were highly worthwhile, I am not sure that all of the mechanisms used to convey those messages worked. In all, it just seemed like the author was trying to do too much, especially at the end where the pandemic is mentioned. In fact, the entire last chapter served as a wrap-up that I could have done without. It actually felt quite preachy and took me away from the gentleness of the book. But, others may have a different opinion of it all, so I would still recommend it. For a detailed review, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks. The girl who couldn’t leave is a heartwarming read that proves one can triumph over adversity with time patience and love!
Agoraphobia is such a limiting condition, preventing the sufferer from doing normal everyday things outside of their home/castle,this is particularly more poignant after recent covid 19 restrictions enforcing people to stay home so that the home can actually feel more like a prison than a haven!
Fiona lives alone, has a very structured orderly life and doesn’t go outside of her garden, due to deep seated issues! Whilst content with her lot and well adapted to living such a solitary life, Fiona is missing out on so much! One day unexpectedly Fiona is asked to babysit little Evie by her harassed single mum, this sudden change to her life and routine is the catalyst that changes Fionas life for the better!
A really inspiring feel good read!
Thank you netgalley for this early read.

Triggers: Agoraphobia
The Girl who couldn't leave is a cute story of Fiona, Bethany and Evie. Fiona who has agoraphobia has anxiety to cross her threshold and her boundary is her garden. She knows her neighbors only by nicknames and one day everything in her life changes when Bethany asks if she can watch Evie for sometime. This starts a chain of events in Fiona's life that brings love and new changes in her life.
This novel is a really good contemporary novel which deals with issues like single motherhood and anxiety disorders. Romance between Fiona and Bethany though is a key element of the book it isn't the focus. I loved how the author paid attention to the beautiful relationship that these two characters start forming and the bond between Fiona and Evie is so heartwarming. A really good novel.

This book was absolutely brilliant. I stayed up way past my bedtime to read it, it was that good.

It tells the story of Fiona who, thanks to a past event, doesnt feel safe to go outside. It also tells the story of Bethany, a single mum to the gorgeous Evie, battling health issues with very little help, that is until she's forced to ask Fiona for help. You follow the story of these 2 women, Evie and Wesley (Fiona's budgie).

I really enjoyed this, it was emotional at times but also quite light and funny at other times.

One bit of the writing I really loved was the location at the start of each chapter, I've never seen that before and I hope more authors do this.

I will definitely be recommending it to friends and family.

This was my choice as a light read for our second pandemic summer and I did enjoy the story. I have known a couple of people with agoraphobia and remember the struggles they had trying to do many of the things we take for granted. I smiled when Fiona made small steps (and actual steps they were) towards resolving some of her issues. It was a heart warming story that progressed towards a happy ending. I did believe that the cause of Fiona’s phobia seemed weak and undefined but know that such phobias may never have a defined cause. I also thought that the initial request Bethany made of Fiona, her neighbour but almost 100% a complete stranger, was unrealistic. Rounded down from 3.5**

"Just let her play out in the front like she has before if you don't want her inside." REALLY??? Who says this to a stranger?

I can't even imagine asking a neighbor that I have never met or seen in passing before, especially in today's world, to watch my child. Someone I don't know, to watch my child, no matter how desperate I was. I realize for story purposes this is a necessary act, but I find it hard to believe. The story was interesting but I can't get past this. For me it made the story less than it could have been.

I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.

Wow! Just wow!
The Girl Who Couldn't Leave is everything I was hoping it would be.
I love the way everything develops and the connections made.
It's truly a beautiful story.
Fiona's experiences are so well written, with plenty of compassion and care.
And the way little Evie and and her mom, Bethany worm their way into her world, is wonderful.
I quickly devoured this book and loved it all!

Sweetly told, old-fashioned drama that I thoroughly enjoyed, despite this not being my usual genre - I chose it specifically for a bit of escapism and it certainly provided that - I suspect I'll be reading more Catherine Miller novels this summer!

Many thanks to the author and to the publishers (Bookouture) for the opportunity to review.

While not exactly what I was expecting, it is a wonderful and heartwarming story. It tells the tale of resilience, persistence and overcoming adversity. There is also love thrown in there too. This is my first book by Catherine Miller but I will be reading her more often! Well written and engaging.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
