This is a CME-on steroids book, though the actual science that would explain the extreme damage to the ozone layer from a CME is a bit murky. The fact that a CME could originate from the sun and hit the earth in minutes and not days, is bad science. I had trouble with the characters. Barry is an abusive and obnoxious toad. Meredith is a passive, milquetoast woman willing to accept abuse. A wronged former cop and his underground fight promoter (what an odd couple) spend most of the time below ground unaware of the danger above. It wasn't hard to figure out who had wronged Jake, the former cop, after he told his story to the crime boss promoter. Then there are vicious, escaped convicts...seems like they are a requirement in this genre, but I am really tired of them. I need someone to cheer for so had to settle on Jake and on Colonel Morris. Not sure that is enough to continue this rather ordinary series.
This book has a world-ending CME event that the reader knows is a local event, but doesn't really know if its a world-wide event. The characters are an atrocious mixture of stereotypes written most likely by an old white guy.
I had better hopes for this series based on the premise of the sun doing some really interesting stuff on Earth. That part didn't fail me, it was interesting.
I doubt I'll bother with reading the rest of this series as I refuse to set myself up for disappointment.
I do love a well written post apocalypse of any sort and this one is tops! It has all the ingredients that make it a possible event. There’s more than one very nasty character, same with the good guys. Lots of action, fist fights, gun fights, dead bodies here and there. It’s going to be hard to beat.
Once again, two superb authors come together to bring another outstanding series. Survival is only possible in the dark, what will happen during the day. I was caught up with how survivors did their best.
Dawn's End wasn't like your ordinary post apocalyptic story. In this book, Justin Bell gave us a look at what would happen if the sun wasn't so friendly any more. This is a terrifying look at a CME on steroids'. Dawn's End is a must read!
Picked this one by mistake. I had read #2 and really enjoyed it then saw this and started reading realizing this was book 1 now I know where they all started. Great read.
I’m a fan of mike. Kraus but I’m afraid this was not his best. It kept going in circles without getting anywhere. I got tired of the characters and skipped to the end after about half way and didn’t feel like I missed a thing
What a mix of characters: a contingent from Cheyenne Mtn, a crooked councilman & his pregnant wife, a disgraced former cop & mobster, & a Secret Service agent in search of the missing President. Whew!

Good story. Fancy being stuck with violent escaped inmates. Worst nightmare. How are they going to save themselves from extinction. Look forward to the next
A great book full of action and interesting/sympathetic characters. I'm so glad I read the prequel as it added much to my understanding and enjoyment of the story. Go read the prequel if you haven't and then read this book.
