A deviously clever story featuring the beloved forensic detective Lincoln Rhyme.
When the FBI comes to Lincoln Rhyme with the news that a mysterious assassin is targeting him, the detective is not particularly concerned. With his long career putting away criminals, he is accustomed to threats on his life, and has designed his Upper West Side townhome to be secure against nearly any threat. But when the assassin gets too close for comfort, shadowing Rhyme and his wife Amelia Sachs as they go about their daily life, Rhyme determines to find out why this person is after him. He must put himself inside the mind of a killer in order to save his own life, and possibly the lives of those he loves most.
#1 international bestselling author of over thirty novels and three collections of short stories. His books are sold in 150 countries and translated into 25 languages. His first novel featuring Lincoln Rhyme, The Bone Collector, was made into a major motion picture starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. He's received or been shortlisted for a number of awards around the world.
The life of forensic expert Lincold Ryhme is threatened in this average short story. There are a few twists, but nothing very exciting. Hopefully the new Rhyme novel, The Midnight Lock, will be better.
A short story in the Lincoln Rhyme series by author Jeffery Deaver. This author is one of the few writers that manage to satisfy me with short stories as I find many of them shallow and lacking substance. Unfortunately eve Jeffery Deaver fails to meet my requirements sometimes I found this no more than an ok read. I was already familiar with the characters having read all the books in the series, so that was a good start but the story itself was a little too straightforward and simple.
A mysterious assassin is targeting Lincoln Rhyme but surprisingly the detective is not particularly concerned. He is used to receiving threats and shows no signs of letting this latest one upset his daily plans. Together with his wife Amelia Sachs they try to discover the threat and determine why his life is being threatened. Putting himself inside the mind of a killer he sets out to save his own life, and possibly the lives of those he loves most.
An ok read but lacked the thrills and twists of other novels in this series.
This was the absolute worst short story ever. Boring, without any fascinating twists or turns and with an end that wasn‘t even satisfying in the slightest bit… Please spare yourself that hour and read or listen to something else, really! 🙁👎🏻 I really hope the authors full books are better than that…

Lincoln Rhyme 14.5. A prologue perhaps for Book 15 due out tomorrow, a reminder that he hasn’t forsaken his famous forensics expert altogether or a stand alone short story doing both remarkably well.
The Midnight Lock is book 15 in this series and I shall start this tomorrow.
This has whetted my appetite for more and got me back into the Rhyme groove.
A conspiracy is uncovered than X has employed Y to kill Z.
The trouble being is that no details are known other than person Z is Lincoln Rhyme.
A tense unfolding story of drama and criminal vengeance and how a mind bent on evil and murder can thwart the best investigators and New York’s finest.
The question is will Rhyme survive, book 15 suggests he might but perhaps revenge is content to destroy a reputation before it takes the life.
I'm always happy to be back in Lincoln Rhyme's world, even if only for a short time. I find with these books I have a harder time picking up what is going on because things are so subtle. That was sure the case with this one. In fact I listened to the audio twice (glad it was only an hour). I really like the plan that Lincoln came up with, where he was sort of aware, but not really too. It was amazing the things that were missed by the team that hurt them, became really eye opening for them all. But it the last little bit that worries me. I feel like there is one person that is playing leaps ahead of Lincoln and Lincoln doesn't know it, which could really hurt him in the end.
So confusing for me. A fake assassination plan, a long time drug cartel that seems to be involved but Oliver knew it was fake? Too much for my simple mind.
Started off great and flowed very well until the end making me feel ripped off totally. Just a $1.99 promotion of somehing to come. Save your money! Wish I could get a refund!
Okay I did it again...didn't look closely at the blurb with the book, and didn't realize it was a novella, or short story. That really irks me when I make that mistake an I think Amazon should make it significantly more clear that these books are short...
Otherwise, the writing by Deaver is as per usual...good succinct plot, lots of involvement by the known characters in Rhyme's life, loads of action. Someone is out to kill Lincoln Rhyme, and they don't care who they take with them. Unfortunately, no one knows who...so Rhymes sets up some scenarios with multiple plots, which ends up surprising everyone. The killer and the person who is paying said killer also seem to be conversing with one another aware that Lincoln and company are trying to find both of them.
I assume there is another short book that shares the ending of all this, because this book left you hanging...and that bugs the daylight out of this particular reader!
A great short story from the Lincoln Rhyme stable. Face with a threat against his life, Rhyme and his police colleagues need to work out who may want to kill him and why before they have a chance to make good on the threat.
There is a bit of misdirection and a lot of tension packed into this short story, with readers aware of far more than the protagonists, but at the same time, armed with far less information too. Be prepared to be surprised and to find yourself smiling. It sets readers up perfectly for more in the series but also acts as a great taster for the styling of the books for the uninitiated. top stuff
The FBI gets word that someone in England has contracted an assassin in New York to take out Lincoln Rhyme. The police buff up security around Rhyme's home as he and his crew wrack their brains to figure out who is after him and what holes may be in their security that can be exploited. But a true master of crime has devised the perfect plan to finally get Rhyme. I wish I had found this short story when it came out, as it does sort of pave the way for things that happened in subsequent books. But it was a gripping tale once it really got going, and made we want to see more short fiction featuring Lincoln Rhyme.
I glad I didn’t pay for this disappointment, which I listened to via borrowed audiobook. This supposed short story—about a death threat against forensic specialist Lincoln Rhyme—begins nicely, then ends abruptly without a denouement. This must be part of a longer work, either a novella or a novel, so it’s an unappealing amuse-bouche.
I chose to listen to the audiobook, because the narrator is Edoardo Ballerini, who is brilliant as always. Mr. Ballerini is worthy of 5 stars, but author Jeffery Deaver gets 1 star.
To call this a "book" is a misnomer. Books, even short books, have a beginning, middle and end. This had a beginning and the start of a middle but no end. More of a teaser than an end. It was like watching a commercial for a highly anticipated movie and then calling the commercial a movie. I was hoping this book would be like an appetizer to a highly looked forward to meal. Instead I got a single cracker with mildly sharp cheese. However, this succeeded with what Mr Deaver was probably trying to attain. I am looking forward to reading the next Lincoln Rhyme book!
Lincoln Rhymes, the iconic wheelchair bound forensic evidence specialist and his wife Amelia Sachs are always fascinating and no less so in this perfectly set up story. An overheard phone call leads the then British intelligence agency(s) to share with the FBI a possible professional hit on Rhymes. I have no trouble imagining such an event. So the Rhymes reaction was.unpredictable.and interesting, hooking the reader.for the short reveal.
A short story that for me was a bit short on the plot. The story revolves around a supposed plot to kill Rhyme with the supposed killer using less than stellar options to try and see if the team were actually paying enough attention to foil his plans. It turns out the “killer” was in fact the Watchmaker in disguise as one of Rhyme’s students from a class he teaches at a local university. Recommended to keep up with appearances in the series.
Another example of Jeffrey Deaver's exemplary talent for writing crime fiction short stories. I regularly buy Kindle short story collections but end up reviewing them along the lines of "some good, some not so much". Jeffrey Deaver's short stories consistently hit the target and "A Perfect Plan" is no exception.
I like this author and Lincoln Rhyme but the book was too short. Only less than an hour. Lincoln is on someone's hit list and they are trying to figure out who the assassin is and the man who has ordered the hit. And then it stops. Don't know if it was a prequel or a first chapter in the book but I was bummed.
This story was fantastic because there is no crime to solve at least not at the moment. Someone wants to have Rhyme killed, but Rhyme knows about it kind of sort of. The who, when and how is what must be discovered. The pace of this story awesome you just can't wait to see how it is figured out. And no I not going to say any more about for now.
This 80-page short story seemed to be depicted as a novel, so I was surprised when it ended so suddenly. Also, now that Lincoln Rhyme has its own TV show, what is the need to make the written story any better than a joke?
Person X is hiring person Y to kill person Z. Unfortunately for Lincoln, he is person Z!
And that's about as good as it gets. The story builds quickly, but ends just as abruptly! I guess it's a 'cliffhanger', but for me, it felt more like a rip-off. Or a cash grab. Not cool at all.
A short Lincoln Rhyme story , information from UK alerts New York police to a threat on Lincoln's life . Very interesting twist at the end. Wonder what the NYPD thought of all the cost they invested? The end sets up another battle for Lincoln against his nemesis. Can not wait.
I am a big Jeffrey Deaver fan and love this series. I would of given 2.5 stars as this novel felt like a cash grab. An entertaining read but I hope Deaver doesn't sell out and rush out stories as this would be a disservice to his many fans... Respectfully, Thomas
A Perfect Plan by Jeffery Deaver is an excellent short story. It is interesting and intriguing, another masterclass in storytelling. Highly recommended
