The Accidental Text

Wrong number. Right guy?

Once upon a time, Maggie Cooper lived for adventure. Jumping out of planes was child’s play. Now she can’t even work up the nerve to ask out her coworker. For a bit of self-therapy, she begins to text her recently deceased mother’s phone—the only problem is that the number has been reassigned and for weeks she’s been unknowingly texting a stranger her deepest thoughts and feelings. There have also been some not-so-deep texts, like the ones about her appreciation for her coworker’s butt.

When Chase Beckett, the unsuspecting stranger who has more in common with Maggie than he’d like to admit, texts back, Maggie is beyond mortified. But message after message and night after night, Maggie realizes that Chase’s wit, charm, and advice are exactly what the doctor ordered. Is it enough, though, to get her back up in the sky? And what about her heart? Can she risk taking a leap of faith for the man on the other end of her accidental texts?

By day, Becky Monson is a mother to three young children, and a wife. By night, she escapes with reading books and writing. In her debut novel, Becky uses humor and true-life experiences to bring her characters to life. She loves all things chick-lit (movies, books, etc.), and wishes she had a British accent. She has recently given up Diet Coke for the fiftieth time and is hopeful this time will last... but it probably won't.

The Accidental Text is very good actually. I like it. Miss Monson done a great job bringing a story about grief, friendship, growing up and love.

The idea of texting your deceased mother'phone is some sort of therapy to let go grief and begin the journey of adventour.

I love the sweet simple yet honest plot from Miss Monson. I think this book is for NA audience.

I wish I could remember who it was I heard say that a story should start "on the last normal day". I remember it because I translated it my head as "no earlier than" because sometimes you want to start past that if the pace and characters warrant it. But yeah, the point is that starting before that gives you a long ramp up without much happening. Oh. And I generally translate that in romances to "introduce both protagonists asap."

So I wish Monson had heard this excellent advice instead of letting me plod through 15% of her story establishing a normal that's mostly Maggie being a giant coward and lamenting her loss of adventurousness before anything changes and we finally "meet" Chase. Monson doesn't bog down again, fortunately, and actually does an admirable job picking her scenes after that. But until that point I was seriously wondering when the pivotal moment mentioned in the cover blurb would finally happen. That's a long time to wait.

Once the story hit second gear, I was mostly engaged. Both main characters are a little one-note and that dragged a little bit. Maggie is being a giant coward and can't figure out why. Chase is a great guy but avoidy on the emotional front, which isn't going to play well in a romantic relationship, should one crop up (you know, like if he's a lead in a romance novel, for example). One-note issues aside, I enjoyed seeing them come to rely on one another and support one another. I liked seeing the growing appreciation and connection between them. So it wasn't all drag.

And I'm not sure that Monson supported the catalytic moments entirely. Maggie's realization and catharsis was a little obvious and should have been a realization she could have found her way to before the drastic moment. And I think the groundwork for what was holding Chase back was a bit thin and should have caused actual friction beyond Maggie wondering if he wasn't being a bit closed off about a thing.

And now it sounds like I hated the story and I didn't. I liked Maggie and Chase and I liked them together. I think part of that is that Monson surrounds her main characters with a vivid setting and secondary characters and gives them lots to do in that setting to bounce around in. And that fun was enough to keep me engaged. Still, it's a three star read when all's told.

A note about Chaste: Chase and Maggie have a lot of emotional processing to do so they don't get intimate until the end and they don't get physically intimate at all. A nice kiss is all. So I consider this very chaste.

I feel bad for even rating this low because I really wanted to love this but it was so... boring? Forced? Anticlimactic? There was just so much useless stuff jammed in there that it took away from what could have been a great story. It also took slow burn to the next level and when something finally happened it wasn’t even worth the mediocre build up and I was already checked out. They finally get together at 98% and then he proposes at 99% and then it’s the end 👀 I’m so confused. It was like a bunch of filler and then boom bam the end.

Woosh! This book! 💗 It wasn't quite what I was expecting but I love to be happily surprised. Author Becky Monson typically writes books full of humor, sarcasm and wit and while there was witty banter and some humor, this book definitely had subdued overtones. Not in a bad way at all. Maggie lost her mother and I could feel her struggle with sorrow and missing that vital piece of her life.

I fell in love with Maggie. Her raw emotion, her longing to keep connections with her mother, and her desire to find the bits of her that felt lost. Maggie is kind and works hard to create harmony and peace in her family. I loved her adventurous spirit that clearly came because of her mother. I felt like throughout her story, I came to know her mother too.

This whole story came together so wonderfully for me. From the beginning where that first text came in from Chase (Chase! 😍) to their first meeting and on to the end, I felt like the relationship between Maggie and Chase progressed naturally and it felt good around my heart. I was so invested in Maggie and Chase, wanting the very best for them. And by the very best, I might mean kissing and love. 👄💙 There were so many awesome moments in this book. I loved it all. ALL.

Don’t get it

So many good reviews. I’m in chapter 10, 28% in, an I just keep skipping more and more of the story to get to a good part. Haven’t found it yet, so I’m giving up. DNF

The MC is okay. Her Mom died 3-4 months ago, and she’s sad. Grieving. Everything she thinks is tinged with sort of a defeatist attitude. I get it; that’s not totally bad. But everyone else? Sheesh. Kick them out. They don’t deserve to be part of the story. The Dad: breaks promises, is on a dating site three months after his (apparently beloved) wife dies, and ignores his kids. The sister: self important narcissist. The brother: self involved, that’s it, just self involved. The best friend: judgmental, unkind. Not a single supportive word from any of them. Just manipulation and judgement and belittling, and the MC says to all of them ‘it’s ok, you can treat me like dirt, it’s my fault for not getting over it.’

If you want a book to make you sad, mad, and frustrated, then this is the book for you.

I liked it!

I admit, I was expecting more of a RomCom, but it felt more like a regular contemporary romance to me. Maybe because it was dealing with death and handling grief, etc. Maggie was a likable character who is having a hard time missing her mom. I loved the idea of our H/h meeting via mistaken texts. I don't think I've read that in a book before, which is a little surprising. I like how Maggie and Chase really form a strong friendship and their feelings naturally grow into more. I personally would have liked a bit more focus on the romance, it felt more like watching two people fall-into-friendship, which of course is a good foundation for a relationship. But, I like when we can see them falling in love at the same time. But, overall it was an enjoyable read with likable characters and a unique plot.

Unexpected, but totally sweet!

(4.5 Stars) I love it when a story takes me by surprise like this one did. I was expecting light-hearted, embarrassing RomCom humor, but a slightly deeper, heart-felt story emerged instead. The book was very subdued at the start and I wasn't sure where it was headed, but don't worry--Monson swirled in the wit and charm. And I ate it right up!

Maggie and Chase do meet in an unconventional meet cute, but the way their friendship progressed was natural, sweet, and perfect. I loved the way they pushed and encouraged growth in each other. I was hoping for a tad more romance, but the whole package was such an enjoyable journey that struck me right smack in the middle of my heart. It made me think and it made me feel. And now I'm hoping for a companion book with Hannah's story.

Content: mild romance; mild language

Super boring. She loses her mojo to jump out of a plane to spread her moms ashes. and starts texting her dead moms phone number. Of course a hot guy is on the other end and then he loses his mom. That's it. That's the story. There is a quick kiss of lips and nothing else. 😬😬😬😳 I thought my word search for c0ck, thrust, and p€nis just wasn't working.

Its a clean romance. Da fuqq

The only good parts were halmoni (grandma in Korean) and Hannah and reading about fabulous Korean food cuz Korean l food is the best. Like.....seriously. Who.hasn't had Korean bbq and loved it? Anyhoo. I digress.

Anyway. Im so fuckinngggg mad at all those people who said this book was so great. Its boring and I'm mad that its a clean read

This is a well written sweet, wholesome contemporary. The story is great. The writing well done. The characters were good! It's not my favorite type of writing tho. I need a book that makes you want to cry or laugh or feel the romantic tension. I didn't get that from this. There is a nice love story that builds very slowly but it had so much potential for some great swoony moments and you don't get them. So I liked it but it is not the kind of writing that I crave:}

Y'all. I did not read the description before I started reading this book. Had I done so, I would've been a little more prepared. I lost my mom unexpectedly when I was 27 years old. So many emotions and feelings came floating to the surface while I was reading but also a sense of peace. While this wasn't what I was expecting, I still enjoyed it.

Maggie and Chase were fantastic! I couldn't help but fall in love with these two from the very beginning. I loved watching them go from strangers to friends to lovers. (Yes... I know Hannah is probably giving me the death stare right about now... I couldn't resist! 😂) These two were absolutely perfect for each other. They were just what each other needed when they needed it the most. I seriously adore these two!

But y'all. I've come to a conclusion. I am not a fan of slow burn romance. I find myself getting extremely frustrated at the characters, shaking me kindle, and growling at them to JUST KISS ALREADY! Was this book swoony? Yes. Was I letting out little dreamy sighs? Again, yes. Did I enjoy the book? Absolutely! But I feel gypped dang it! I wanted more kissing! Lol.

All in all, it was a cute book and I had a really hard time putting it down. I stayed up past my bedtime reading and woke up extra early just so I could sneak in as much reading time as possible.

I have loved every book of Ms. Monson's that I have read so far. I really do need to catch up on her books! They always give me that break from reality that I crave. I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next!

As for my casting... *dreamy sigh* I. Am. In. Love! What do you think?

This book was SUPER adorable. It seriously just made me grin like a fool as I finished it.

And as someone who has lost a parent I felt automatically drawn to Maggie and Chase. I just loved their connection. I loved how they "met" and how their relationship bloomed. I cried and laughed. I got those swoony feels... and the ending was one of the best endings in romances I’ve read in a while.

It was a clean romance with all the feels!!

I really enjoyed this story. There's not a lot of flash to it. In fact, I would say that it has more of a feel of a YA book even though these characters are in their 20s. The characters, and especially Maggie, the first person narrator, seem young to me. The way that Maggie handles her romantic crushes seems young to me ... more like a high school romance than an adult one. But, having said that, I still liked Maggie and Chase enough that this didn't really bother me. I felt like I was just reading the story of two people becoming really good friends. It's true that Maggie and Chase meet through a wacky coincidence. After Maggie's mom dies she continues to text her mom's phone as a way of feeling connected to her. Chase ends up getting her old phone number, and eventually he has to tell Maggie that he's on the other end of the texts exposing some of her innermost thoughts. It's a bonus for both of them that the person on the other end is actually kind and intelligent and super cute. In real life that is not as likely to happen. It's more likely the case that you'll end up getting collection calls from debt collectors for the person who had your phone number before, but I was okay living in this fantasy world.

I was happy for the simplicity of this story. It's not really romantic most of the time. In fact, for the first 4/5 of the book Maggie believes she is pining for another guy, but all along she was becoming super friends with Chase. Eventually she realizes that love isn't something you have to manufacture. Love is what springs from true connection, the sort of connection that she has been forming with Chase all along. Despite feeling like Chase was lovely for the entire story, he really is a bit of an enigma. He never really opens up about anything until the very end of the story, but he was such an obviously good friend to Maggie that I trusted that it would be okay when he finally decided to talk about deeper things. His lack of openness leads to the one blip in the budding relationship, and, to be honest, it was super frustrating because in every other way Chase and Maggie seemed obviously perfect together. Why could Chase not just SAY how he was feeling? I still don't think he adequately explained why he left Maggie high and dry after she took the leap and told him how she was feeling, but I was happy enough with the HEA ending. It made me smile, and that's always a good thing.

This is a pretty average contemporary romance that was an enjoyable read with likeable characters and a fun story line that kept me reading. I loved that it focuses on the relationship growth instead of any physical chemistry between the characters. I give it four stars. I really liked it.

So I don't read the back cover copy so I was expecting something humorous just based off the cover and some of Ms. Monson's older books. What I got was something deeper with humor sprinkled here and there. It was a great read and one I'm happy I spent time in between the pages with.

The latest addition to the author’s brilliant repertoire of clean romantic comedy stories is one that hits you with all the feels. Cliché though it sounds, I literally did laugh one minute and cry the next. For me, this author is a guaranteed 5 star read. Every. Single. Time. I honestly don’t know how she does it. Maybe it’s because she doesn’t publish her books like a fast food restaurant hands out cheap hamburgers, and she takes her time perfecting her craft. Each book is relevant and I always have a hard time putting them down once I start reading. I’ve said it before, and I’ll announce it again: Becky Monson is one of the very few authors whose work I haven’t ever given less than 5 stars to. I’ve loved every single one. I will certainly read this one again. And again. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Well worth the read.

This book was so cute! I loved how it dealt with difficult topics but did not feel heavy. And I was impressed by how invested I was in Chase and Maggie when all they were doing was texting! Their banter was so cute and the storyline was believable. I really got into Maggie's head and felt what she was feeling. I especially loved her friend and siblings, whose personalities were really well fleshed out. Looking forward to reading more from this author!

I lost my mom at 26, so I could completely relate to the characters in this book. Grief is hard. And it hits us all so differently. I didn't feel like myself again for 3 years, so I understood everything Maggie was feeling.
Loved this book based on how real it felt.

Helped me in my grieving

I finished this book a month ago but couldn’t bring myself to review it. I’ve really wanted to write a review on this book but it was such an emotional read for me I had to let some time pass first. I read this book a couple weeks after loosing a close family member in death. The two main characters in this book both having lost a loved one and going thru those steps of grieving hit so close to home. But the book was full of hope and how to work thru the emotions that hit in these circumstances. I actually felt like this book helped me sort thru my feelings and get me on the road to heal. It was like the characters were my little extra support group besides just my family and friends.
I just want the author to know how much I loved this story and how much it touched me in ways I wasn’t expecting. Thank you for this story that deals with such heavy subjects but in a way that had humor and lightness. Thanks for keeping it real.
Even if you aren’t going through something right now, this book was just a great book to read. Very entertaining and about filling that hole left in your life when a loved one dies.

this is my first 5 star book for 2022.

i am a firm believer in signs and things happening for a reason, so maggie and chase finding each other when they were both at their lowest really made me happy, because it shows that the universe always has a plan for you.

this wasn’t an extravagant love story but one that gradually developed and was based on seeing each other at their lowest point and still choosing to love each other and want to be with the other person.

Again another unexpected book that actually it wasn't. I thought this book is going to be more hilarious side but it's actually a sad, heart breaking but at the same time heart warming even thought it still has some funny cute moment.

Despite of writing style I honestly don't like but when I try to think from the story and the author direction going, the writing is actually very fit and the language is very suitable in today's era so for me it's a passable.

What makes me give 5 star instead of 4 like I initially before, because I love how even its a fiction but this story in real life it's more accurate in our every day life. When we lost someone (It's not have to be about death) our personality going to be distant and a part of us is gone like our energy got suck up so I can't blame totally if the story might seem too slow at first.

Luckily there's a growing characters in this story so you guys no need to worry. The development is done in a warming way. I could totally imagine if this story could have a movie with a christmas theme.

Meet with someone in our lowest time but still choosing to be together and decide to heal each other growing, that's kind of love that seems so easy but hard to reach.

If you like a heartwarming story in hope for wishes, I totally recommend this and hope it works for you too

Honestly I had really high hopes for this book bc it’s rated so high, but it was really just “fine”.

The story is great and had so much potential, girls mom died she’s texting her moms old number about her life and then some guy gets the number and responds. Their romance is cute too the problem with the book is the terrible side characters.

Her dad was a mess. He was meant to be a great dad, loving / grieving widow, but instead he was neither of those but the book kept implying he was while his actions showed something completely different.

Her bestfriend had that terrible personality where they do nothing to help and support the mc making bad decisions because “you needed to learn this on your own”, I wish authors would quit making characters like this. They’re trash.

Her siblings and coworkers were bad characters as well.

Her personality wasn’t great but their romance and the story would have been a 4-5 star read if the rest of the characters weren’t in it.

I'm really surprised I managed to finish this in one sitting. Also surprised how wholesome The Accidental Text is. It's been a while since I read a clean romance so this book was really refreshing.

I liked that there was more to this book other than the romance itself. The meet-cute was cute and I like how it turned into some unexpected friendship. But other than that, it also tackled grief, acceptance and how different everyone copes with loss. It was a really nice story of acceptance and the romance between Maggie and Chase was a sweet addition to it. Although there were scenes that I find unbelievable but nonetheless, it was a nice, sweet read.

_____
Mom: Hey there. So, I’m not sure how to tell you this, but I just recently changed my number, and this is the number they gave me.
Maggie: How long have you had this number?

_____
“I need a kiss for good luck first,” he says. Pointing to his cheek.
“You don’t really deserve one,” I say.
“Just give me a kiss, woman.”
