Incendiary Attraction

Rate this book
Everything about this mission stinks. Including falling for his sexy new boss. FBI Agent Jace Quinn has a massive chip on his shoulder. Held back to an inferior rank because he hasn’t finished his degree, the decorated former SEAL has a problem with authority, especially the female kind. So when his new boss turns out to be the woman he flirted with at a cousin's wedding, he's horrified. Worse, so is she. Assigned to infiltrate a dangerous white supremacist group, Jace seizes the opportunity to prove to her this lone-wolf lawman doesn't need handling. ATF supervisor Heidi Hall is still reeling from the suicide of an agent under her command, and her quest for redemption means that in this joint task force op she's going to work extra closely with the arrogant hottie who nearly talked her into bed. But in getting past Jace's defenses, every intimate debrief only deepens her desire. And her rookie undercover agent seems headed for disaster—personally and professionally, which will bring down both their careers. When Jace's intel reveals a staggering terror plot is about to go down and Heidi discovers a traitor on her team, the pair race against time to thwart the deadly conspiracy before the city is blown sky high.

I gobbled this book down as quickly as I could while being able to still savor it (is reader’s indigestion a possible thing to have?). Jace is an alpha all the way, and Heidi cannot be categorized as anything but herself. The author did a wonderful job showing the nuances of people-how we read body language, why some of us are more adept at it due to varying life experiences, how some of us show love, and that our weaknesses do not negate our strengths. I’m a training counselor and love the mental health aspect. Also, Jace is freaking hot and I hope this is made into a movie.

I could not guess at who was trustworthy or who would be acting undercover for a hate group. At one point I suspected everyone, and am happy to report that not everyone in the book is a member of a group perpetrating hate crimes. The conflicts were authentic and the suspense was real. I could keep going, but instead I’m going to go back and reread the series from the beginning.

I picked this from a book club after reading another by the author in this same series, “A Savage Trick” which I really enjoyed, so I went in with high expectations.

The Premise
FBI Agent Jace flirts with a beautiful older woman at a wedding, only to find out shortly thereafter that she is his new boss. ATF supervisor Heidi, fresh out of a past situation that ended badly with her agent’s suicide, is seeking redemption in this new case to solve the terrorist bombings by white supremacists — but as a woman in the field, she is often slighted and it is hard to earn respect. Now, with the hot-headed hottie agent Jace under her command, she is struggling to maintain her professional demeanour while overseeing his undercover operation. As Jace gets deeper into the terror plot, he and Heidi must race against time to solve the case before another bombing occurs — but will their attraction to each other get in the way?

The Pros
This was a fast-paced romantic suspense filled with dramatic twists and turns. The author clearly did her research to make the situations and dialogue sound realistic — something that is a pet peeve of mine for any subject matter that deals with law enforcement! I enjoyed reading the action scenes and I felt that each character was aptly fleshed out, even the antagonists. I also enjoyed the interaction between the two main characters, which builds slowly throughout the story until it finally — finally — explodes!

I was glad to see glimpses of my favourite character from the last book — Zamira! Zamira! Zamira! — as well as others in the Quinn family. There were also some shocking moments the author explores that are far too easy to picture in real-life — a young man being led astray, disillusioned and needing to feel like he belongs; and the additional danger women face in their daily lives while practicing their religious faith.

The Cons
I do have to admit, however, that I went in with high expectations, and overall it didn’t quite measure up to the one I read previously. Jace’s insubordination and tightly-wound alpha-male behaviour was infuriating rather than attractive sometimes, and Heidi’s decisions were questionable at times. Also, while for the premise of a suspense novel, I understand that having this kind of plot unwind over a year or more would be difficult to write, still it struck me that Jace supposedly gained the trust of these terrorists FAR too quickly, which was the only thing that felt unrealistic to me.

Conclusion
Despite my tiny niggles, this was overall a terrific story, well written and fast-paced. The elements the author explores and winds together into a cohesive, fluid plot combine to present an excellent depiction of issues that we face today — prejudice, terrorism, and the fragility of life. I could feel throughout the novel that the author poured so much heart into the story, and I really appreciated the tiny nuances to make this kind of story feel realistic. I would highly recommend to other readers, and look forward to reading more by this author.

Terrific Story & Narration🎧A Gripping Suspense!

Incendiary Attraction
Damaged Heroes, Book 4
By: Sarah Andre
Narrated by: Michael Joss

Sarah Andre has outdone herself once again, penning another thrilling romantic suspense set in her “Damaged Heroes” series. This fourth book of the series is Jace Quinn’s story, and I have been looking forward to it since meeting him in the earlier books, sometimes behaving like a jerk in those books, I knew there was going to be more to his character and Ms. Andre does not disappoint. We learn there is a lot more to Jace and why he has a chip on his shoulder. Working for the FBI has its challenges, including rules and bureaucratic red tape, which is slowing down his advancement in his career, but he catches a break when someone puts their trust in him for an undercover op. Heidi Hall, an ATF supervisor, is called in to lead a joint task force op, and she met Jace before knowing he would be on her team. She had her reasons for choosing Jace to infiltrate the white supremacy group and despite Jace’s supervisor’s lack of faith in him, she believed he was the right choice, and they were both committed to seeing the mission through. Ms. Andre brings you alongside these characters, giving you a bird's-eye view of them working the case, investigating leads and tracking down others involved. It was great watching that and seeing Jace and Heidi navigate a relationship, both work and personal. There is never a dull moment in this book and the story has plenty of drama, angst, thrilling suspense, heartfelt emotions, and a slow burn romance. As always, the writing, plot and world building are incredible, as are the character growth and development. Sarah Andre, thank you for another intriguing story and wild ride.

🎧📚🎧 Michael Joss and Elizabeth Russell continue to do a great job bringing these characters to life and do so with a complete understanding of who they are portraying, giving each a voice that is fitting. Nailing it as the two leads, Jace and Heidi, grasping every aspect of their personality and demeanor, and were just as great performing the roles of the side characters, too. They set the right tone for the story and they captured all the character’s emotions. They are a terrific narration team, with voices and talent that complement one another and an entertaining performance that keeps you glued to the story.

Not high action but plenty of high drama

Jace Quinn is a Special Agent Associate in the FBI. He has no hopes of rising out of that “associate” position without a college degree, which he is in the process of getting. He kinda resents this since he’d already been trained and paid his dues in the SEALs. But, for now he’s keeping his head down—pretty much—and doing the job. Then one night, at a friend’s wedding he meets a somewhat older woman who heats his blood. Nothing happens, though he has plans. The following Monday he meets her again, in the form of ATF Case Agent Heidi Hall. Well…

Heidi is taking over the task force organized to find and capture a white supremacist group called Race. After her initial brief with Jace, she believes Race is behind a mosque bombing in Chicago. Though he has no experience, she talks her superiors into allowing Jace to go undercover in the hate group. The problem comes when she finds Jace may have been a SEAL, but he doesn’t take orders well, from men or women. He could end all their progress, as well as get himself killed. Then what would she do? Much as she hates to admit it, she’s developing feelings for him, too.

Incendiary Attraction isn’t the usual shoot-em-up FBI gun battles type book. Instead, it’s a thoughtful, well-researched book with developed characters and a sturdy plot and focus. Heidi Hall is a particularly well-drawn character. I’ve never read one of Ms. Andre’s books before, but I truly enjoyed this one. My only picky comment was in the character of Jace. He’s brash and hot and daring, as we’ve come to think of in the SEALs, but he was a bit too over the top for me to totally believe. Still, the book is very good and tackles a tough subject.

I was provided this book for the purpose of providing a fair and honest review.

This was an excellent book to review. It starts out in Chicago, where FBI Special Agent Associate Jace Quinn is attending a wedding reception. There he meets Heidi Hall who is an ATF Supervisor. She is in town to investigate the bombing of a mosque that recently happened. Jace dances with her not knowing that she will become his boss a days later.

When he reports to work he is surprised to see her there. Heidi holds a meeting to discuss the bombing and assigns people to their positions. Her plan is to get Jace Quinn a position as an undercover so that she can keep her hotness for him in check. His job is to become a member of the White Supremacist group known as "The Race", and get them to admit to the bombing while acting like he can help set up a grander, more elaborate one. Jace's time in the Navy SEALS makes him a good recruit.

As the story goes on though, things start to go very wrong. Jace Quinn is kind of a hot head who has problems following orders from his commander's. He prefers to go with his intuition and do things on his own. He realizes this is a mistake when he meets Calvin Sheer. Sheer acts all excited about the plans, secretly however, he is on to the fact that Mr. Quinn is an undercover agent about to spoil their plans.

This book is full of modern lust, murder, and even terror as we discover the amounts of hatred and lengths that White Supremacists can go too. If you are looking for a cozy book that edges on suspense, this is it, hands down.

Incendiary Attraction
Damaged Heroes, Book 4
By: Sarah Andre
Narrated by: Michael Joss, Elizabeth Russell

The fourth book in this romantic suspense series is packed with angst, danger and building passion. This is Jace's story, and his intimidating personality is here full force. Meeting him in other books, we know he is an FBI agent, but he isn't happy there. He wants to learn and move up, but his career is at a standstill. It could be he doesn't follow orders well. But when he is given an opportunity by Heidi Hall from the ATF to take down a white supremacist group, he is all in. At least that is what he thinks. There are some doubts of whether he can handle such a difficult undercover operation, but he is on task. How does this end? I will say, Sarah Andre doesn't pull any punches. She jumps right into the frying pan, and it's awfully hot! I loved this one, full of cringes, relevance and a slow burn. It's fantastic.

Michael Joss and Elizabeth Russell narrate this and truly do the story justice. It's packed with all kinds of feelings and these are brought out in each scene with their talents. Great listen!

Jace Quinn meets Heidi Hall at a raucous wedding party and then finds out she’s his new boss. Buzz (and attraction) stopped in their tracks! Our FBI hero and ATF heroine walk a fine line between career passion and obsession because both their reputations are on the line. When Jace goes undercover as a white supremist terrorist, Heidi’s job is to coach him as well as keep him out of danger. Problem is, there’s a leak in the task force, compromising every effort to capture the terrorists. Andre’s research on ATF and FBI systems is sterling, and her characters are utterly engaging. You won’t be able to put this book down until the surprising ending!

This is a very detailed story of Jace and Heidi. She's older and also his boss, then add in all the typical bias and rumors and you've got one non-stop action story. He's an alpha, but he is also not overly confident in some situations. Heidi is fighting for everything, every day, every way, and it's exhausting but it does show her inner strength. Various truths in today's society are brought forward in this book and they won't be easy reminders for every reader. Well thought out book and I enjoyed the intensity. This was my first read by this author and I hope it won't be my last.

I voluntarily reviewed this book.

Yessss! Everything I was hoping for and more! I loved all the action and suspense plus the Inside look I to a different lifestyle. These two really went through the wringer to become coworkers and get along. I liked see what Jace went through for his UC work. Plus showing the difficulties that women have in a male dominated workplace. I enjoy this series. Hopefully the last two brothers will get their books.

I listened to this on audio. Narration is well done and I did not struggle as much with Michael Joss vocals as I fid in previous books.
