The Rose Room Rogues #4

A Rose for Laura

Rate this book
Keniel Singh, a bi-racial by-blow of the former Earl of Huntington is unknown to his three brothers. He was born to Chloe Singh, an artist mother who was Jamaican. She had a brief affair with the former Earl of Huntington when he was there to check on one of his plantations.

On her deathbed she tells Keniel of his heritage and encourages him to find his family. He sets out for London and is soon employed at The Rose Room, while his brothers, the owners, do not know who he is.

Miss Laura Benson is an almost spinster who champions children on the London streets. She’s raised enough money to rent a house for an orphanage. She is upset to learn that a Mr. Keniel Singh has put in a bid to buy the house for himself. She visits him and finds a young, handsome, charming man who won’t give up the purchase of ‘her’ house.

Keniel is attracted to the spirited, beautiful woman, but holds back, sure she would never consider any sort of relationship with him because of his heritage. However, to keep her in his life, he refuses to break the contract for the house. Instead, he offers to help her find another one.

Laura is equally attracted to the man, but his refusal to allow her the house that she deems perfect for the children, and the fact that he manages a gambling house patronized by the very men who produce these cast off children warns her to keep her heart close.

As Keniel's feelings grow, can he change her mind?

Hi Romance Fans,

My historical romances are full of heat, humor, and quirky characters. I’ve always loved history, which was my college major. Things of the past fascinate me. Not those boring history classes in high school, but the history of people. How they lived their lives, what they ate, what they wore, the challenges they faced, what they worried about.

I have recently delved into Historical Cozy Mysteries. My very first one, For the Love of the Baron, a Historical Romantic Suspense novella, spurred me to try a full length, non-romance focused cozy mystery. A Study in Murder released last year from Crooked Lane Publishing, and the reviews have been excellent. The second book, The Sign of Death, released this year and the next book, The Mystery of Albert E. Finch will release in January of 2022.

I've also been busy keeping up with my Regency/Victorian romances. Check out my latest series, The Rose Room Rogues. Four brothers who own a gambling club and find themselves caught in the net of love.

Watch for my new Highlander series, The Sutherlands of Dornoch. The first book in that series, To Deceive a Highlander, will release March 30th.

Take a look around my website and check out some of the books I write, and their lovely covers. www.calliehutton.com

Just so you know – I would have given this book 5-stars just for the epilogue alone! As the last book in the series, I did so want an epic epilogue – and this author delivered! We’ve seen each of the Rose brothers find their HEAs and thanks to this wonderful epilogue, we get to see where life’s journey has taken them and their families six years later. OH! Just so I don’t forget – there is a wonderful, romantic, heartwarming, and witty story that comes before that epilogue. You DEFINITELY don’t want to miss that.

Keniel Singh is of mixed origins – his mother was half Jamaican and half Indian and his father is white English. Keniel lead a comfortable life in Jamaica even though he had no idea who sired him. His mother, a gifted artist, was part of Jamaica’s aristocracy and therefore Keniel was as well. Keniel never had any issues with not knowing anything about his father, but, on her death bed, his mother told him all about his father and made him promise to find his English family. Reluctantly, Keniel made the promise and after her death, he made the journey to England. He had no intention of immediately making himself known to his English family because he wanted to assure himself that these were honorable and upright people. The best way he found to get the measure of them was to take a job in their club – The Rose Room. There is nothing like working with someone day after day to get their measure. He came to like and respect his half-brothers but was having a hard time convincing himself to tell them the truth. He intends to do so – just not yet. He is still unsure how they would react to hearing they have a multi-racial half-brother.

Miss Laura Benson is the much-loved only child of a very, very wealthy businessman. Their business ventures have given them exposure to all cultures and they have admired all of those cultures and enjoyed learning more of them. While they are not members of the ton, they are accepted by them and receive invitations to all of the best venues. Laura is growing more and more tired of the social side of the ton and therefore accepts fewer and fewer invitations. Her main focus at the moment is the children’s orphanage she and her two other committee members sponsor. The building that houses the orphanage is due to be torn down by the end of the month and she has to find a new home for the children – and fast.

The initial meeting between Keniel and Laura is priceless and you’ll read it and all of the subsequent meetings with a huge smile on your face. Laura is sweet, lovely, giving, and very forthright. Keniel is caring, handsome, and very pragmatic about his reception by London society even though he has the full support of his half-brothers. It was a delight to see Keniel and Laura find their HEA.

I thoroughly enjoyed the read and can highly recommend it. My only, only, only complaint is that we saw four very nasty women walk away from a truly despicable act without any punishment at all. Surely there was something that could have happened to them – maybe they all got the pox from the same man or something. Happy reading!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and o/pinions are my own.

Excerpt:
She shook herself and smiled. "I am here about the property as well, Mr. Singh. I am Miss Laura Benson." She didn't extend her hand, not sure if it was proper with a man to whom she hadn't had a formal introduction. "But I can tell you that I have decided to lease the house, so I'm afraid you are too late."
His brows rose. "Indeed? However, I just left the property agent who told me the residence was still for sale."
"Sale?"
"Yes, Miss Benson. I am looking to purchase a townhouse."
She shook her head. "No. The property is no longer for sale. It is now available for leasing." She offered him a tight smile. "And I have decided to lease it." She moved to go around him. "So, if you will excuse me, I shall be on my way to sign the lease."
Being a gentleman, he offered her a slight bow and stepped aside for her to pass.
"Have a good day, Mr. Singh."
"You as well, Miss Benson." The door closed behind her and she hurried down the steps. If Mr. Singh was interested in the house, she had to get to the leasing agent's office first and sign the papers.

Another Rose brother steps into the arena, and Callie Hutton wows us again with her creative imagination and storyline! Keniel surprises his three half brothers when they find out who he is, and that he has been working at the Rose Room as Club Manager, for over a year!

Their acceptance of him was all he hoped for but knew if may be hard for society to accept him due to his mixed heritage, his mother having been Jamaican. Now he just needed to find a home.

Miss Laura Benson was determined to find a home to lease for the orphanage. Unfortunately, it seem in two instances she ran into Keniel who was trying to buy the home! It seems though, she is finding him most attractive as he is het!

A delightful story of the heart that brings all the brothers back together and the epilogue is simply stellar and sigh worthy. Well worth reading as all of the series!

A lovely story about Keniel and Laura. The family characters were so wonderful and caring. Mainly a nice vibe to the story, but also some horrible characters that didn't like the racial pairing of Keniel and Laura. I loved Callie Hutton's writing of this story. A lovely HEA, which I thoroughly enjoyed. 5☆

I have really enjoyed this series, though somehow I missed Hunt and Diana’s story, so I’ll have to read that one now. I’m quite sure that it’s got to be as good as all the other brother’s stories. I really enjoyed this book, with the here-to-fore unknown brother accepting his place within the family.

What a fabulous book with a satisfying epilogue! Keniel Singh and Laura Benson are encountered in a leased property where Laura requires it for her orphanage meanwhile Keniel requires it for his permanent residence. Keniel irritates Laura because he doesn’t want to withdraw his intention to purchase the house that it always leads them to dispute the property.

Throughout their search for finding the house, they both have compelling attraction that they couldn’t resist. What I love the most from this series is the Rose heroes couldn’t hide and keep their hands off of the heroines including Keniel. Keniel wants to have more than friend relationship with Laura however his insecurities of his heritage and the status quo make him evade Laura because she is an heiress of successful businessman and is welcome in the ton whereas he isn’t but he cares for her and wants her to be happy.

Callie Hutton did amaze me over again with this latest series, not only does this book tell how the volatile of the cast off children in the past matters but also how the racial issue arises. Nevertheless I was overjoyed when Keniel and Laura conquer the status quo. What an enjoyable reading with the unusual hero and all the issues arise within this historical romance, I personally recommend this! Thank you, Callie Hutton for this ARC which I voluntary reviewed.

This is the 4th book in Callie Hutton’s wonderful Rose Room Rogues series, this tells the story of Keniel the unknown Rose brother and Laura, strong minded suffragette. It’s a story about acceptance and how perceptions can lead to hurt and harm. It is especially poignant today where we have the “me too” and Black Lives Matter movements where people of color and women strive to be treated fairly. In no way is this book political or trying to make a statement, as a reader it struck a cord with me personally. Above all it is a work of romance and fiction, two people meet fall in love and find obstacles in their path to happily ever after. Keniel and Laura fight for their love and with the help of their loving families marry and enjoy a full blissfully happy life together. I have enjoyed this whole series, seeing how the brothers find love and work together. It is always sad when a great series ends, I loved the epilogue which allowed the reader to see how the brothers and their families faired over the years.
Although I received an advanced readers copy of this book, this is an honest review of a series I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Keniel is one of the famous Rose brothers and the secret he’s carried has just been revealed to Hunt, Dante and his other brother. They have always treated him as equal and now they welcome him with open arms!
Skeptical to read this at first I will admit because well when you know you know! I have been this complexion and race for over 50 years and I love the author but hmmm can she really do this justice?
That’s my story and I was sticking to it until I wasn’t….
Laura also surprised me along with her father it wasn’t like she wasn’t aware of some odd looks and raised eyebrows she was just focused on Keniel Singh as a person, a man and his qualities.
Keniel in his mind already knew the implausibility and impossible choices his heart seemed to making without his head being involved!
His brothers true to form could tell this was different and teased him over it.
Laura was passionate about saving orphan babies before meeting him and that did not dim one bit after she couldn’t stop thinking about him!
This is a slow burn. I loved it! Yes the author nailed it and I say BRAVO! Well done! With all the turmoil in this world over race relations. Well this was a pleasure to read!

While I'm sad this is the last of the Rose brothers, I can't deny the wonderful ending Ms. Hutton brought us with Keneil and Laura's story. I've enjoyed all the Rose brother's stories and how they found their HEA, and this one also did not disappoint. Keneil is an illegitimate by-blow of an affair his father had while in Jamaica checking up on one of his plantations. When he learned of his heritage, he came to London and secured employment at The Rose Room as a means to really get to know his newfound siblings without telling them who he really was. Laura and Keniel's meeting was invaluable, and I loved all their interactions afterwards just as much. They had such great and witty dialogue, it always made me smile. These two were wonderful together and undoubtedly had amazing chemistry. Ms. Hutton truly captivates with her well-written prose and brings the characters and scenes to life. And the epilogue was fantastic, really doing justice to the Rose brothers and each of their journeys.
Wonderful story and amazing series, I definitely recommend!

I received a complimentary copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Keniel Singh, son to an artist that is half Jamaican half Indian. He is the only child and they were happy. He never knew his father until the death bed confession of his mother. Making a promise to meet his brothers he travels to England. He gets hired as the manager for The Rise Room gambling establishment. Now with his possessions, in his crowded rooms off house hunting he goes.

Laura Benson, daughter of a wealthy businessman, suffrage movement supporter, and head of the orphanage committee. Their current home for the orphanage is being demolished and she has a short time to find a new place. While out looking for a new place she meet Keniel at a few of the locations.

Both are wanting each of the three locations the bump into at. The first two get sold before they can put a claim to. The third Keniel gets due to him buying instead of leading per the owners preference. Now Keniel offers to help Laura find a place.

As the two work to find a place for the babies different occurring situations that have both of them thinking what next, what can I do to make it better and what does he/she think of me?

So enjoy this fun, witty, and discovery of secrets romp through London searching for the perfect home. Does Keniel find his family and does he tell them or so they find out before he can. Does Laura find the perfect place for the orphanage? Do they become friends? Does Laura get support for her orphanage to help more?

AI really enjoyed this last book in the series. If you haven't read the previous three books, why not?! They are all great reads, but you can read this as a standalone.

As usual with this author, the book is well written with great characters and some humour.

Kenial and Laura are great main characters. They are considerate, kind and compassionate at a time when not everyone was.
Laura meets Kenial whilst looking for a new home for orphaned babies. They have a mutual attraction that only increases during their house search.
They encounter some prejudice due to Kenial's mixed heritage, but these are overcome with the help of their true friends.

The Rose brothers reappear in this story and there is a great epilogue 6 years later, that gives an insight of all their future lives.
This is a lovely end to an enjoyable series.

A Rose for Laura (The Rose Room Rogues Book 4)

The courtship of Miss Laura Benson and Keniel 🌹, youngest brother to Hunt, Driscoll and Dante has run into a snag with the ladies of the Upper Crust in London. These women are all about sabotaging the relationship, but it won't work. Or will Keniel and Laura let the ladies of society's class distinction tear them apart? There are several lessons to be learned about affairs of the ❤.

This was a pretty good 📖 by author Callie Hutton. I would recommend this series for readers of history/historical fiction.

This was wonderful. I loved how the author handled Keniel's mixed heritage and how Laura was color blind and did not let the differences bother her. Keniel was such a gentleman and he worried about a relationship with Laura and how it would affect her standing in society. Even though some people try to get between them, well meaning family members work to get them together. The Rose brothers are so accepting of their illegitimate brother, Keniel and do not care about his Jamaican and Indian heritage. In the end Laura and Keniel's love cannot be broken.

A Rose For Laura is a fantastic historical romance by Callie Hutton. This is a fairly quick read, perfect for those with limited reading time. Ms. Hutton has provided readers with a well-written book filled with lovable characters. Keniel is of mixed heritage and leaves his home in Jamaica to find his brothers as he promised his mother before she died. He's worked for his brothers for a year without telling them who he is. Laura is the daughter of a businessman and is involved with an orphan's home. Laura and Keniel's story is loaded with drama, humor and spice. I enjoyed every page of this book and look forward to reading more from Callie Hutton in the future. A Rose For Laura is book 4 of The Rose Room Rogues but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Ya’ll know I suck at reviews. I read a lot of really good books and a lot of really good authors so I want to recommend those reads to others. :)

I have read 30 books by Callie Hutton so I obviously like her writing. I really enjoyed this book.
I had written in my review of book 3 that it was my favorite so far but this was definitely my favorite.
I loved Laura and Keniel. I loved their story. I like that Callie put a little final ending of what was up with all the characters at the end.

I would definitely recommend this series. They were all good. But this was definitely my fav.

A tug of war over a house they each want. One will win, but will they both lose their hearts?
Keniel Singh, a bi-racial by-blow of the former Earl of Huntington is unknown to his three brothers. He was born to Chloe Singh, a Jamaican artist who had a brief affair with the former Earl of Huntington when he was there to check on one of his plantations.
On her deathbed she tells Keniel of his heritage and encourages him to find his family. He sets out for London and is soon employed at The Rose Room, while his brothers, the owners, do not know who he is.
Miss Laura Benson is an almost spinster who champions children on the London streets. She’s in need of a new home to lease for an orphanage she manages. She finds the perfect house, but Mr. Keniel Singh is also viewing the property and he plans to purchase it.
Keniel is attracted to the spirited, beautiful woman, but holds back, sure she would never consider a relationship with him because of his heritage. However, to keep her in his life, he refuses to break the contract for the house. Instead, he offers to help her find another one.
Laura is equally attracted to the man, but his refusal to allow her the house that she deems perfect for the children, and manages a gambling house patronized by the very men who carelessly produce these cast-off children warns her to keep her heart close.

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

Will he let others’ restricted view pave his path …

When I began reading this series, i thought it was to be a trilogy but the last book offered an expected surprise with the revelation of a fourth Rose brother.
Keniel learned only upon his mother’s final days the identity of his sire. And a promise to her saw him now in London, working for his half brothers, all of them unaware of their bond. He did well for himself and while has received a warm welcome by all his half siblings, he is still half Jamaican. And in the upper crust, it might be much an impediment.
Laura, while not from aristocratic bloodline, her trade origins might not be as shunned as a few decades ago, still she is more appreciated for her heiress status than anything else. Why quickly the ballrooms lost their glitters, so she turned her interest to more useful accomplishments like the right to vote for women and the management of an orphanage.

Their first encounters made them opponents, but soon an easy friendship burgeons between them, nourished by their attraction. But Keniel fights it, not trusting himself to be enough.

Laura is such a gentle lady, but not so naïve to be blind to the Beau Monde many flaws, she knows the ton is very denouncing to those it labels as different. But she never covers, she stands strong and still. Keniel is a sweet and caring fellow, maybe too kind as he tends to looking to protect others before himself. He belittles himself by fear of rejection, all the while staying blind to those who accept him as he is, origins, skin color and parentage.
The author with this last in a series grants us a lively and moving tale of resilience and love beyond society’s expectations, with such a sweet epilogue to turn the pages of the Rose brothers tale.

I've read all the stories in the series and it can be a stand alone. But I think you would enjoy it more if you read the previous stories because you have cross over character's. It was nice to catch up with the other Rose brother's and their families.

The beginning dragged somewhat for me but improved over the 1/2 way mark through to the end. I wanted to know if the witch of a so called friend was ever found out what she put her 3 cohorts to do. Sad how some in Society looked upon orphans and servants.

The h was kind hearted and didn't care that the H's mother was part Jamaican and Indian and his father English. But, this bothered the H because he didn't feel worthy of the h and knew how Society would scorn their children. We are treated to an epilogue 6 years in the future which I loved, but how their children or themselves were treated we aren't told.

Lovemaking within marriage, heat level 2 out of 5 and only described once. I felt a connection to this couple so it was filled with love.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, nice epilogue, HEA, romantic and a small tad of spice. A few editing errors but nothing major.

I received an advanced copy. All opinions are my own and freely given. (ljb)

I enjoyed this historical romance story with two main characters that were Miss Laura Benson and Mr. Keniel Singh. And also the rest of the characters too.

Miss Laura Benson is looking for a new place to house the orphan that her and her friends are committee sponsor for. The former orphanage is being torn down because for old age and she only has a month to move out or  the children will be thrown out on the streets. While looking for a place she meets a another person that wants the same thing but for a house of his own.

Mr. Keniel Singh has found out that his father is a white English man that his mother had a fling with while his father was visiting his Jamaica plantation. But he didn't know this until his mother tells him about his father before her death. She didn't want his father to take him away from her so she did say anything. But now that she gone her final wish is that he meet his brother's that are in England. So he set off the England to see them.
But he doesn't have any intention of immediately making himself know to his new English family. Because he not sure they will expect him.

This was a fun to read story. It had me laughing a lot.

I received a complimentary copy via author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

Keniel Singh is looking for a townhouse. He’s the manager of The Rose Room, the gambling club of the Rose family, but he’s also a Rose brother and now that he’s been accepted into the family, it’s time to find a place to settle. But Miss Laura Benson is likewise looking for a place for her orphanage and why is the handsome Mr. Singh set to stealing the perfect place she found?
This book is without any doubt a very satisfying conclusion to the Rose Brothers’ saga.
I looked forward to seeing the last Rose brother find his place in the family and I wasn’t disappointed. He’s truly a wonderful man, very honorable and adorable. I’m happy he met his match in Laura, who’s a very capable, independent and equally adorable woman. I liked their interactions very much, from the slight animosity at the beginning to their growing love at the end. And of course, their difficult journey toward an HEA proves that men can be very dumb sometimes and it takes a smart woman to make them see some sense!

A fitting title for the final book in this series. The newest/final Rose brother makes himself known in this story. Keniel Singh is the manager of the Rose Room gambling parlour and the secret half brother of the three Rose brothers. Keniel's half Jamaican half Indian mother told him on her death bed who his father was and encouraged him to meet his brothers. Working for the Rose brothers has given him time to determine if they would accept a brother of mixed heritage which they did once they found out.

Kennel began looking for a house to buy where he meets Laura who is looking for a house to lease since the place currently housing her foundling orphans is being torn down. After several more run ins Kennel buys a house. Laura is livid with anger. This is their love story.

Keniel is a bi-racial and he has brothers that know not of him. Back in the day it was not uncommon for the upper to have affairs. His mother tells him of his birth father as she is dying. Ironically he gets employed at business his brothers own.
Laura is a champion of the children on the streets. She has managed to save to rent a house for a orphanage. Of all things though she finds out Keniel wants to buy it. Let the fun begin eh?
They both will have misconceptions of the other but you will find as we go along the truth will unravel. Keep turning the pages to see if they both succeed in obtaining their wants and desires.

I really enjoyed getting to know Laura and Keniel. It was great to see how the other Rose brothers were doing too. They meet competing for the same houses but soon learn they are drawn to each other. Laura an unconventional woman of her day helps run an orphanage and then even helps at the Rose brothers club when they need her. Some members of society don't want to see the orphanage work and do their best to interfere and when they fail there they try to interfere in other ways. Great to see how the Rose brothers and their ladies take on the Ton.

A growing rose (family)! The Rose brother's number has increased, with the addition of Keniel. He's looking to purchase a residence; as is Laura, for her sponsored orphans. This is where the story becomes more engrossing and fun. Enjoyed the character's wit, strength and humanity! Good ending to the series, which can be read as a standalone. 3 1/2 stars.

Very Very Good Story!

Rose Room Rogues comes to an end! Each book was very enjoyable. I absolutely loved the characters and storylines so much. Keniel and Laura were sweet. I’m glad it finished with the reunion. It cleared up all the children and the last pregnancy for Laura. I would have to say that she had a little girl finally. That’s it for my Callie Hutton stories. Off to start my new Alisa Adams book just released. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜

I enjoyed this book and I loved Keniel and Laura. They were perfect for each other and I liked how their relationship developed through out the book. I really liked the epilogue and fell in love with the children. Maybe they will make an appearance in future books.
I highly recommend this series but this was not the best book of this series, but well worth the read.

I was intrigued with the premise of an interracial Victorian romance and this book delivers. I liked that the author addressed the prejudices of the time, but the acceptance of the Rose brothers was heartwarming. The epilogue was a great way to end the series, and maybe begin a new one with those interesting children?

Two stubborn people who took a long time to acknowledge what they wanted. I liked them both. Although Keniel knew who he was, his relationship to the Rose brothers, they did not know. When they were finally told (not by Keniel) they accepted him wholeheartedly. Laura was kind and working to improving the future of orphans. Her father was a little too laid-back. So many of the characters were touched upon rather lightly. I would have liked a little more depth. Also insta-lust was ever present, with a lot of kissing. They did get their HEA, with the prerequiste steamy scene.

Lost a star for the steaminess.
