After a life of hiding and laying low so as not to end up trapped in the Underwold, that's exactly where Reagan finds herself.
It could be worse, though. She could've had a hostile father as her jailor instead of a man eager to teach her magic. She might've been trapped with someone other than the steadfast Druid.
She could've gone her whole life without riding a dragon!
When push comes to shove, maybe the Underworld isn't so bad.
Or maybe Lucifer is doing what he does best - deceiving her to get what he wants.
Reagan must walk a razor thin edge to keep her independence.
She must battle wills with the lord of the Underworld.

This aspect has NEVER failed! There are very few series that go this length and never falter with the storyline but this series for me is near flawless. This another week exciting and dare I say emotional adventure for Reagan. Finally coming face to face with her father only to be is prisoner. A very pampered prisoner however if you know Reagan any type of prisoner is unacceptable. She excepts his training to gain her full power. She shows us the power she has gained from Darius. She becomes what she was born to be….The Dark Princess.
Penny, Emory and Darius are there as well with a wonderful and exciting side story leading them to Reagan. Penny is just the right amount of goofy and catastrophic to really spice this up and cause SEVERAL laughs!
We do not see a lot of Reagan and Darius moments. This is all about Daddy Dearest and his heir. Let me tell you it was phenomenal! I did not put this down! It pains me to know the last of the series is up next. Literally 💔
I am hopeful the world will continue. There are so many interesting characters I would love to see come full circle.
I read this twice already! Ok hear me out, I was so caught up the first go round that I devoured it quickly. There is so much going on that I read it again to see the subtle nuances I missed the first time!
Reagan is in hell, well the underworld but same thing right?! She will have to play the long game with Daddy dearest or be a prized pet for life. This story arc fit amazingly into the overall series arc. It really helped continue the world building and I enjoyed the details about the underworld that we hadn’t seen before. It came alive in my head like a movie playing on the screen. I hated that I started to like Lucifer and my heart hurt for Reagan and also for Penny. There is battle in this book but the main battle was in the mind and I ate it all up. I found myself shocked and dismayed at some parts then equally whooping with fist shoved in the air at others. Not only is this a must read, this is a must read again and again!
I expected a lot from the second book of the last DDVN trilogy after how the previous one ended, but colour me surprised, because I didn't expect to be taken into an emotional ride encompassing all of my favourite characters, from Reagan, obviously, to Penny, just as obviously, to Cahal (seriously), to Darius, unsurprisingly, to everyone, really.
And. It. Was. Perfect.
I laughed, of course, but I also cried as I haven't cried much in that series so far. As in: I ugly cried. I'm not ashamed of it.
But now, I will only say this: bring on the final battle, Queen Breene! I'll be ready.
Copied from book 9 of the series because this trilogy feels like one book.
So. The rip roaring finale of this series caught me by surprise and as it turns out, probably a good thing. By the time I found it, this trilogy part of the series was complete. Honestly, this trilogy felt more like a single book than a trilogy, so I shall review it that way. The first book is laying the groundwork, the second book moves everything forward, and the third and final book finishes what began in the first book. Not one of these feels complete in and of itself and I am quite happy that I found them when I did - which was shortly after book 3 was released. So, I am treating this review as if the trilogy were one book.
I will admit, Reagan is not my favorite character in this series. Charity is. There is not enough Charity in this trilogy. In fact, it almost feels like why did we seriously waste 2 books of the series talking about Charity? Was it just filler?
Penny (and Emery) come shining through and the relationship between Penny and Reagan is priceless and relatable and believable. It was good to see her again.
Ultimately, to me, the story took far, FAR too long to conclude. And, Reagan spent too much time away from everyone else. To fill up the time there is tons and TONS of sex scenes, far more than either necessary or typical of the series. Many of these scenes between Darius and Reagan involve dialog that is necessary to move the plot, so they are hard to flip past.
The finale and ultimate solution of the world building was interesting and no, I did not see that coming. I am still waffling on my thoughts and feelings and its effect on me. I do really love these characters, and was disappointed that *all* the characters in the world building did not get a satisfying conclusion. I am disappointed in that I feel like there was too much filler and this could have been a duology at the most, and, more adequately, a single book. Typically in a series like this, I like to spread the books out to keep from the feeling of being overdone and just getting tired of the writing style, but did not feel able to do that.
Don't get me wrong, I still love the series, but, ultimately, this could have been better.
I absolutely love this series but sadly, all good things must come to an end and the next book will be the last. This book gets you racing to find out what's going to happen, but at the same time you find yourself slowing down because you don’t want this to end. I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters yet, The snark, laughter fighting sex and the love and the feeling of family. Had been a real treat. And I do have to say and read from book 1 like I did I forgot a lot in those early books, and am glad I had re read them all now the final book is next… bring this bad boy to the end with a bang I hope…
If there was a way to sum this entire book up in 3 words, Mentored in Fire would be it! I have never read such an amazingly perfectly titled book before. I loved the return of heavy focus to Reagan in this book because I feel like this is mostly her story. Though, we do still get some of Darius, Penny, and Emery as they journey through hell, literally, to try to come to the rescue! Penny's reactions to her adventures are even better than Reagan's at some points! We really do get peak Reagan in this book though and I was loving every second! The ending was just mind-blowingly amazing! I can't wait for the next book, seriously, I need it now!
You can just feel the pacing and the energy all the way through this series so far. There's just this undertone of urgency that pushes you right along.
Reagan's trapped with Lucifer in the Underworld. The best part is I had no idea of where anyone was coming from the entire time. It was misleading in a variety of ways from a multitude of characters, and that made it so interesting and engaging.
This chapter in the DDVN series was really the moment I've been waiting for, with a hint a dread attached, but it surprised me and surpassed all my expectations. It was fun, almost whimsical, and had me slightly unsettled for most of it.
And I couldn't see the end completely coming. I was astounded, enthralled, and am very intrigued at what the finale holds. I've loved this series from the start, and it's finishing even stronger than it began, though I can't fathom how that's possible.
There was quite a bit of mind efferey up this book. Especially with big papa in the picture. Not quite sure if I like him or not, but I think he’s growing on me. Poor Penny, Underworld is far out of her comfort zone.
Revealed in Fire by KF Breene is a paranormal story that is fun and witty. KF is a go to author when you need something to take you out of a funk. Something to take away the tears although this one did make me tear up. Something to make you full belly laugh out loud at the end of a stressful day. The humour and banter KF infuses in her characters is just perfect and easy to imagine. This little gem is just one amongst the many she has written and is an easy read and a lot of sass and fun. It is an absolute delight to get lost in. I thought this would be the last in the series, but I was wrong. The day of reckoning is coming, and I can’t wait.
I loved seeing Reagan and Lucifer try to outmanuever each other in this one. I'm sad to see this series wrapping up, but have really enjoyed the storyline. Reagan has always been my favorite character in this series, so I am glad that we are ending this with where it all started.
This was an excellent novel. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Regan with Lucifer, as well as Penny, Emery and Darius' time in the underworld. I really hope Cahal gets his happy ending.
Although I’m still not into the wandering through other hallucinogen-like worlds for long periods of time, this installment had enough of a “real” (well fantasy-real) plotline that I actually enjoyed this story much more than the last time Reagan and her cohorts spent time in the underworld. Everything else we love about this series , the action, the amazing relationships, the snarky humor et al is here in spades! Now I’m counting the days until the last book in this series publishes. It has been a great ride - one I don’t really want to end.
* Hint to the author*. Cahal… we NEED him to have his own book, series, trilogy… I don’t care what - but PLEASE give us more of Cahal!!
This book had everything I needed. I couldn't decide how I wanted this book to go. It was a roller-coaster for sure. One thing I loved about this book....Dragons. The ending I could here K.F evil laugh as she wrote the last line. This book was amazing. I am going to be sad to see it end next book.
Deception is a dangerous game especially when your dealing with the devil. A fun series about magical creatures, shifters, mages, vampires, dragons and demons. A battle to overthrow the elves cruel reign and a reckless powerful MC bonded to a vampire who protects the people she loves. There is never a dull moment when Reagan is around.
I love that this isn't just wrapping out Reagan and Darius's arc, but also giving us more on Penny and Emery, who I also adore. (Also glad there was no Charity, because I'm just not a fan of her.)
This one made me hella nervous for a good stretch, but I'm so glad it worked out. Also: DRAGONS!
Can't wait to see how everything concludes in the last book!
Mentored in Fire, book 10 of K.F. Breene's Demon Days, Vampire Nights series is full of great characters and amazing world building. The Underworld is completely different than you would ever dream. Ms Breene's ability to take a known concept and make it uniquely her own is masterful. Lucifer and his domain are unlike what you'd imagine. The line between what should be evil and what should be good is not always clear. The battle is coming. The fallout should be spectacular.
So if you have read my reviews of this series, you know I hate Penny and Emory. They were a big part of this book but they didn’t annoy me half as much. This book read better than the last and I was glad to see Reagan as a constant main character again. I loved the little twist in the end and DRAGONS!!!! It has definitely got me hype for the last book. I am a little worried the last book is going to be choppy like the one before this as we will probably have all the storylines merge again and a ton of POVs but KF Breene’s endings usually leave me satisfied so I will trust in her ability to wrap things up!
Also Cahal and Roger need stand alone books. Is that happening?
Yowsa...Reagan is back and our Queen kept us in the dark until the very last chapters. It was intense and masterful and so good. We got lot's of action & the rest of the gang had their own adventures and we got Dragon's, squee. The end is near though and it's going to be epic as only Queen Breene can do, cant wait.
I’m an avid Breene fan, and I am well acquainted with her writing style; yet she had me hoodwinked with this one. We finally get to see Lucifer’s character, and he’s just as twisted and unexpected as Reagan can be. I absolutely looooove how she’s introduced him as a character with such depth yet completely ignores all religious aspects. He’s dark and twisted, yet funny and affectionate as time goes on. We get to see his version of manipulation, though I was a bit disappointed to learn he is nothing compared to the manipulation tactics of the vampires. And that another main villain has figuratively fallen off the face of the Earth.
Yet despite these slight misgivings, Breene still shines in her masterful storytelling. I really found myself dragging this out because I did not know how it would end. And I feared that what you perceived to be happening would really come to fruition. There are unexpected twists at the end that are just the cherry on top. And naturally, my favorite parts of the book included Reagan’s playful banter with Penny. And seeing Penny mature and develop into her own strong character in her own way.
There’s a touch of Eragon, splash of a heavy dose of crazy covered in the unexpected; making the next and final book in the entire DDVN series the most anticipated book yet. It will finally all come to a head, and I for one cannot wait to see how it ends. Though, I bet it will be bittersweet for me as a reader at least.
While this book had a slightly different feel to some of the others, maybe due to a fair chunk being from Penny's point of view, it still knocked it out of the park. Reagan is now in the Underworld with her dear old dad, learning more about her magic while shadowed by the druid, Cahal. Pretty much all of the book is set here as Reagan is trained by her father and gets to know him and his realm better. Oh, and there's dragons! YAS!
While there wasn't too much going on after the heart attack that was the last book, it certainly stands up on its own as Reagan develops more of a relationship with Lucifer, torn between wanting to leave him to have her freedom and being drawn to him and genuinely liking him and the quirkiness that is his kingdom. While Reagan is in the castle with Cahal and testing her magic, Darius, Penny and Emery are on Team Rescue, on a mission to save Reagan or risk losing her forever - there are several, longer chapters focussing on their story along the way. Darius' long-laid plans, networks and cunning laid out through the Edges in the Underworld may finally come to fruition as they attempt the unachievable: access to the Inner Kingdom. But of course, nothing can ever be that easy and as Penny unintentionally wreaks havoc, throwing a spanner into carefully laid plans, the trio are left running for their lives and desperate to save their friend/beloved. The sects from the Dark Kingdom crop up ranging from violence to pleasure and it was a great ride (excuse the pun) from beginning to end.
As per usual, the characters in this series were fantastic. Reagan was business as usual, being the perfect mix of strong female, kicking life goals (literally) while also showing a good amount of character development and some vulnerability, especially as she came to terms with losing her mother and actually liking her father. Penny's character showed massive growth and added so much to this book. I'm talking proper swear words and finding a backbone and her lady bone..er lol. I felt she went from being a bit scatty and naïve to coming more into her own as a powerhouse. Emery was as yummy as always, taking more of a backseat to Penny who moved to centre stage, but still great as per usual. And Darius? A firm all-time favourite of mine, he can do nothing wrong and while I would have liked more of him, particularly dialogue-wise, I ate up every page he was on, loving his continued devotion to Reagan. We finally get a teeny bit more of vulnerability from him and the lengths they went to to reunite was perfect.
The secondary characters were, as always, wonderful. Just as Lucifer was a standout in the brief cameos readers were given in previous books in this series, Mentored in Fire was no different. He was manipulative, funny, diabolical, charismatic, enigmatic and just an all-round big cup of deliciousness. The reader gets to meet various demons of the Dark Kingdom, particularly those close to Lucifer, which added some great dimension to the story. Having the dragons show their own personality was a brilliant touch that made them stand out from some other paranormal books and they will be a fantastic addition to the next book as well, I'm sure. One of the best characters, however, was Cahal. We get to see even more of him in Book 10 and he's just fabulous, both as a support to Reagan and as the kick-butt killer. Pleeease let him have his own book.
While the book did have a different feel to it due to the focus of the story being on Reagan's development of her magic and her relationship with her dad, it still managed to shine in all the areas this author does so well and what makes this series one of my all-time favourites. It was laugh out loud funny in parts without being over the top and as per usual, the dry sarcasm, witty banter and both light-hearted and serious dialogue were balanced perfectly. Reagan demanding to be called 'Her heinous' was a particular stand out. I flipping love Reagan - she's what I want to be when I grow up. There was action, particularly towards the end where my heart was in my throat, only for the author to try to tear it out. The book had some really lovely, heartfelt moments that you don't always get in this series but were highly appreciated here, as several characters had moments of reflection. As Reagan's loyalties started to twist as she realised how much she actually does belong in and love the Underworld, the author had me guessing right up to the end (hook, line and sinker, may I add). I should have remembered that with K. F. Breene, things aren't always what you expect before she kicks you in the guts and takes off running in a different direction. Much like Penny would lol.
My only slightly negative thing to say so it doesn't seem like I'm gushing too much adoration at the author is the same thing I've said for some of the other books - there was a fairly large chunk of the story told from Penny's point of view. While I loved it and appreciated that the other characters' story was being told and it let me hang with Darius for a bit...I'm just greedy for Reagan. I want allllll the Reagan, alllllll the time. While necessary, sometimes I felt like I was pushing through the Penny chapters just to get to Reagan...which I probably was. This is only a minor thing, though, and if Penny's point of view wasn't in there, I'd probably be writing that here instead lololol. Reader problems - le sigh.
One of the things I always mention with this author's books is how the women support other women. This really shone here as Penny and Reagan's friendship flourished even though they were apart. The connection between all of the main and secondary characters was a beautiful thing to read. This author has a gift for taking similar themes that are woven throughout her books and making them radiate and become part of the story rather than having them seem tired, overdone and no longer funny. The worst thing about these books is having to wait for the next one. The fact that the next book is the final installment for Reagan is already giving me anxiety lol. This was another outstanding read in one of my favourite series. Now how many times will I get to reread it before the last book is out? Probably a few :)
Soooo good! Cahal is so sneaky, they sure did have me so confused! And Dragons, whooooa, so cool the type of dragons that they bonded with. Perfect matches, all around. Reagan has a lot of decisions to make, but I think she has made the best move, and I love how she never has a plan. Never. Just wings it, so much more entertaining! And Penny really shined in this book! I love who she’s become with the help of Reagan and her shenanigans!
Mentored in Fire is the 10th book in Breene’s Demon Days and Vampire Nights (DDVN) series. It is intended to be able to be read as a standalone and in some regards it certainly can be. But as someone who has followed this series from the start I really think if this is the first book in the series you read, you’ll be missing out on an awful lot. Now the good news is this story does an excellent job of displaying all the facets to Reagan’s complicated personality. She’s part angel from her late mother’s side and part demon from her father’s side. This story focuses on Reagan the character that is the glue that holds the rest of the series together. Her vampire lover Darius and her friend Penny and Penny’s lover and partner in the dual mage team Emery. There’s also Cahall the Druid assassin that helps guide Reagan and of course Reagan’s father Lucifer, Lord of the Underworld, the person Reagan has spent this entire series trying to hide her identity as his daughter from. This book is as much Penny’s as it is Reagan’s. This story picks up where Revealed in Fire left off. After being captured and tortured by the elves and then rescued by her father Reagan is now Lucifer’s guest/prisoner in the Underworld. Lucifer helps heal her and offers to train her. Reagan has the potential to perhaps be the most powerful magical creature in the world thanks to her dual heritage. She’s come a long way from the earliest books when she was just realizing her power and accepting it. But she still has a ways to go to learn how to harness and use all of it. So she is happy for the opportunity to learn from her father whom until he rescued her, she’d never met. The trick is for her to spend time with her father and not allow him and the natural pull the Underworld has on her to be seduced into wanting to remain there and take her place as Princess and second in command. Lucifer wants an heir to share the burden of leadership and fill in for him when he wants to leave for a while. Reagan has no interest in living permanently in the Underworld. But despite her refusal to acknowledge it she feels a growing affection for the father she never knew and always feared. She also feels a powerful pull, a sense of home living in the Underworld. Breene leaves us wondering for much of the story whether Reagan will choose to remain in the Underworld or return to Darius and her friends and help lead the revolt against the elves. Lucifer after watching several potential heirs fail to survive emotionally distances himself by referring to them as heirs rather than his son or daughter. But he is so enamored with Reagan, her spirit, her intelligence and her powerful magic that he begins calling her his daughter. He feels a true affection for and a bond with Reagan. Will he leave the decision whether to stay or leave the Underworld up to her or will he try to force her or seduce her into take a throne by his side? Darius leads an expedition into the deadly Underworld with Penny and Emery to free Reagan before as he fears Lucifer succeeds in seducing her into wanting to take her place as his heir We see the rescue attempt through Penny’s eyes. Although Penny and Reagan have had a close relationship since she was introduced in the book Natural Mage, she has always denied they were friends. Still, she knows Reagan would do anything, go to any length to protect her. And in Revealed in Fire Reagan does just that sacrificing herself to allow Penny and Emery to escape the elves who want to hang them. Penny is the most powerful mage in the world blessed with godly magic. With Emery she forms the Dual Mage team making them incredibly powerful. Add Reagan’s magic and they have the Triangle of Power which is prophesized to lead the overthrow of the evil elves rule. But she is far from confident in her powers. As Reagan says, “Penny is at her best and most dangerous when she’s throwing spells over her shoulder as she runs away from danger. In this story, determined to rescue her friend Penny steals her spine and runs towards danger instead of trying to run away from it. And there is plenty of danger for her to face. As well as a stop at a demon sect that pushes her to put aside her normally conservative nature. Penny’s version of swearing is one of the few light hearted moments in this story which despite not much real action until towards the end seemed to me to have a darker tone than the previous story even with Reagan’s eventual capture and torture. I know I’m biased because Breene is my go to paranormal romance author but despite a slow start I think this book is another great addition to the series. I’ll be sad when the series is over with the final book Battle with Fire is released in mid-September. But I have a feeling Breene isn’t completely done with our heroes. A certain Druid and an Alpha shifter still need to find their mates.
This pains me to say but DNF at about 50%. Revealed in Fire was decent even though it took me a bit to get into and I still had to deal with Penny. This installment however just isn't working for me. It is boring me and irritating me in equal measure. I know it really isn't but it feels like a filler book and that is really disappointing.
I am also dropping it because so much of this story revolves around Penny and I hate her character more than almost any other character I have ever read about. There isn't anything I like about her or her magic or how she uses her magic. I guess I just feel like I already suffered through a full trilogy of Penny's nonsense, why do I have to be subjected to her POV in this trilogy? I had to suffer through Penny and Emery in a fucking lust sect in hell. No fucking thank you. Get back to my girl Reagan please. Penny and Emery can fuck off to the other side of the world for all I care. See a list of things I hate about Penny below. (Emery would be ok if half his personality wasn't being in love with Penny)
1. Her nickname is Turdswallop and Emery calls her that at the same time he is expressing sexual interest in her (multiple times) which is just awful. 2. She is somehow simultaneously a genius and an idiot with her magic. She frequently pulls off amazing feats of magic people gush over but also accidentally does magic all the time especially when she is startled. It is irritating as fuck especially when she fights people. 3.The fake cussing. If it was used less this probably wouldn't bother me all that much but it gets used ALL THE TIME and it makes me want to shove a pen into my eyeball. 4. The fact that she stole god touched magic and shared it with Emery. Honestly Penny was already an overpowered speshul Mary Sue character and then she gets the additional boost of being god touched. I really didn't understand why it was necessary. The other Mary Sue leading ladies (Reagan and Charity) were that way because of their bloodlines nothing extra involved except training to understand and use their inherent magic. The extra boost for one character feels ridiculous. 5. The fact that she has a cloud of organized magic over her head at all times. This isn't necessarily specific to Penny if any character was always reaching into an ever present cloud of magic to form spells it would irritate me. 6. She is always so self righteous especially the way she talks about magic and the magical community. I understand that this was meant to be used to differentiate her as a natural mage but it comes off as incredibly condescending. This is especially present in her trilogy and it makes me hate her even more. Her judgey fucking comments always make me wish she would die. 7. She seems to feel like her feelings and judgement about Reagan and Darius's relationship actually matter. She questions whether Darius actually loves Reagan and that pisses me off to no end. 9. The constant references to her being sheltered or naive or innocent. That got OLD fast. 10. She cries and whines and gets all wide eyed and surprised all the time. This is especially at times when her magic does something she wasn't expecting it to do. It is not endearing it's irritating and makes me hate her even more.
Making this list kind of solidified for me that I probably won't finish this series although I will re-read Reagan's original trilogy and Charity's books. This continues my hit or miss relationship with K.F. Breene's books.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Oh, the action comes thick and fast in this one!!! Picking up just days after Reagan get captured by the elves, Daddy Dearest 'Lucifer' turns up to rescue her and take her back to the Underworld to get to know her and train his Heir.
Cahal is with her in an attempt to keep her on the designated path, ie, let Lucifer train her up and then get the hell out of there.
But Lucifer turns out to be quite nice and Reagan starts to enjoy her time spent in the Underworld, especially when she gets to meet the Dragons!
Penny and Emery go find Darius and they form a team and set off to the Underworld in an attempt to rescue Reagan from Daddy's clutches. Penny is very much out of her comfort zone in the Underworld, especially with the illusions, she's easily spooked at the best of times! But their rescue attempt does not go to plan and the party are at breaking point, their fear for Reagan palpable at all times. There are so many different parts to the Underworld, all different in how the look and their occupants and how they behave, this was brilliantly and descriptively written!
Told from different POV's, I especially liked the odd chapter from Lucifer when you get to see things from his perspective. He is quite amazed at his Heir and at just how powerful she is, and how quickly she learns from him and he just can't help thinking more of her, as a daughter rather than an Heir.
It's quite astounding at just how powerful Reagan has gotten in this one, able to match Lucifer and take down the most difficult of his spells. Full of emotions as well as Reagan battles with herself and others are battling for her. There's still plenty of humour thrown in there to break everything up, I love how Darius pushing Penny's buttons with her awkwardness. But Emery is there for her through everything.
Brilliant from start to finish, I can't get enough of this series and the DDVN family, there is only one book left to go and whilst I am very much looking forward to seeing how everything plays out, I am not looking forward to leaving this world behind!!
Wow. I don’t know how to review this book without spoilers, but here goes. Reagan has met Daddy Dearest, who has taken her to the Underworld. Lucifer has also allowed Cahal, the druid, to come with her; with the stipulation that he be eliminated when his usefulness has run out. Lucifer is pulling out all the stops to induce Reagan into staying with him to rule – and Reagan realizes that she truly feels at home there. She can express her emotions, destroy things, learn how to control and expand her magic, and possibly meet a dragon! Meanwhile, Darius, Emery, and Penny are following a plan to extract Reagan, a plan that Darius has had in place, knowing there was a possibility that Reagan would be found and abducted into the Underworld. This story was fantastic, with a totally unexpected twist. The tension was so high, that halfway through the book I was fighting myself not to peek ahead and see who survived and where Reagan ended up. We get demons and dragons, an unexpectedly likeable Lucifer, Reagan at her cleverest, Darius at his most adroit, and Penny and Emery struggling to navigate the incredibly dangerous and emotionally draining Underworld. Will Reagan be able to resist a beguiling and loving Lucifer and his world? Will Cahal, Darius, Emery, and Penny manage to survive? This is KF Breene at her absolute best! Do not wait another minute to start reading this book.
