I'll admit, at first I was confused. When I think of King Arthur, I imagine a young, handsome boy pulling a sword from a stone. I imagine battles with dragons and mythical creatures. I imagine a hundred brave knights at a round table, dutifully serving Arthur, their righteous king.

Yet in the beginning, Arthur isn't a king. He's merely a Roman knight who was taken from his family when he was a boy. Taken to pay tribute to Rome, the conqueror of their country, Sarmatia. While he's a commander, he fights many battles and becomes a legendary warrior.

During this time, he chooses one hundred knights to serve under his command. And these knights join him at the round table.

At the time the story takes place, only seven knights remain of the original hundred and their fifteen-year terms of service for the Roman Empire have nearly come to an end. But before they are released, they are sent on their final, dangerous mission. A mission that will, when completed, either lead them to freedom or death.

Yes, I was confused, because this book differed from the actual story.

A few chapters in, I was finally clear with what was going on. I realized that the tales of King Arthur we know were only 'tales' in this story as well. I realized that this story was meant to be the real tale of the glorious king.

Don't let this minor confusion let you change your mind about this story, though. This book is amazing. No, it was much more than amazing. Words cannot describe how much I loved this book. It had me nodding, laughing, and on the verge of tears. (I'm sure I would have cried, had my brother, sister and mom been somewhere else. I don't cry in front of people.)

The story was so beautifully and wonderfully written. There was a perfect balance between action, romance and comedy in the book.

You know those books that change you? Those books that stick with you weeks, months, or even years after you've read them? One of those books that you not only remember, but you want to own? One you need to have in print and on your bookshelf to fully appreciate it?

Well then, you know how I feel about this book. Loved it. Just loved it.

Love the movie, which lead me to this book. Great author--he really did an amazing job adapting the screenplay. Hard to go wrong with this cast of characters, and I loved the way that they're used here. I'm really pleased with this take on the traditional legend; I find it both plausible and more historically possible/probable. Oh, and this is by far my favorite take on Guinevere.

As books based on movies go, this one wasn't too bad. There is some more character development. The editing at the end of the book, however, is bad, for characters who are alive after the battle are dead and then suddenly alive again. It is a little confusing.

Frank Thompson's adaptation of KING ARTHUR is a more than worthy complement to its cinematic inspiration. Characterization, plot, and atmosphere are all at least as well realized by Thompson's pen as they are in the film, and the author excels with the action scenes, infusing them with a nearly-tangible clash of steel, sinew, and bone. Lancelot's character is particularly better realized as compared to the film, and the relationship between he, Arthur, and Guinevere significantly fleshed out. As portrayed in the source movie, the Church of the day does not represent Christianity well, but the novel's Arthur is if anything more devout (the knights all remain thoroughly pagan). Historical inaccuracies are not really an issue--this is adventure, not history. Certainly not on par with the works of Malory, Tennyson, or White, but a worthy reimagining of the timeless legend, nonetheless.

If I could I would give this book more than 5 stars.
I waited for this book to be in my arms for more than 10 years. And let me tell you, it was worth all the waiting. I cried and laughed and fell in love with this brave knights of the Round Table.
Since I was a kid I was obsessed for tales and movies about King Arthur. This book portraits a life of a real legend, Arthur and his knights and Guinevere.
This book is based on a movie with Clive Owen and Keira Knightley. I watched that movie for so many times and know the lines so I was thrilled to find this book perfectly fallowing the story of a movie.
Must read for all fans of legends about King Arthur ♥️

This book was very enjoyable. Action packed and didn't drag details through the mud. Characters easily described and let your own imagination build them. Frank is my type of writer, let your audience use their imagination and instead of beating a dead horse with details. I saw the movie in theaters and liked it, but didn't think it was as brutal as the book. Until the director cut came out in homes and it ended up like the books brutality. I don't really say it that much, but I really enjoyed the movie more than the book.

The book was better than the movie. I loved Bors in the movie, but the author gives his character much more screen time in the book. This was a great movie novelization. I enjoyed the added info and insight that it gave.

This book tells a young Samartian male who was raised or more like kidnapped by the Roman Empire, and grew up to become a knight. In the end of the book, he was in command of a battle against Saxons. Personally I do not enjoy the book as much as I expected, mainly because of the confusing plot line and over extended battle scenes. Although the story is not so interesting in my perspective, I still enjoy most of the war scenes. This book contains very vivid war description; therefore I don’t recommend it to anyone who is sensitive to violence reading materials. But I would say that it’s still appropriate for school readings, since nothing too disturbing was described in the book. The vocabulary level of King Arthur is not too difficult, but some odd words are used since the story isn’t set in the modern days.

Enjoyed this nontraditional view of King Arthur who is highly romanticized in most of the books I have read. True, the historical timeline is warped but the story spun by Thompson is, in my opinion, about as creditable as many others. John Morris, historian, "suggests on the basis of archaeology that a period of Saxon advance was halted and turned back, before resuming again in the 570s." (Wikpedia - King Arthur) The existence of Arthur is questioned by many historians but Morris notes that a man named Arthur may have ruled temporarily as Emperor of Britain.

No, I have not seen the movie but I enjoyed this book very much. I found the rendering of the Battle of Mount Badon, at which the Saxons were routed, particularly interesting. And, I found the closeness of the knights engaging. In all, I would recommend this read. I liked it.

The world of King Arthur was introduced to me at a very young age and to this day enjoy reading fiction/non-fiction books on the subject. This book is based on the screenplay that stared Clive Owen and Keira Knightly. And have to say I like this version very much. More realistic than fantasy. Arthur is a Roman soldier and a Christian. He is Sarmation like his knights (originally from near the Black Sea) and Briton. The last Roman legionnaires are leaving Briton and Arthur has been commanded to bring Alecto, the nephew of the Pope, back to Rome. He encounters the Woads (or Celts) headed by Merlin and his daughter, Guinevere. The Saxons are invading Briton as well. Arthur must decide who are his people and where he belongs - Rome or Briton.

This book has many ways to keep you reading and Iknow them. One of the ways to keep you reading is that it is a great story teller and you never get lost.

If you like book's you will love this book,and if you love history like mievel time's you will love this book to.But if you dont like book's and you hate history than all you have to do is look on one page just one and you will love reading.And im not just telling you this I know from experince!!!!!!

I found this book very entertaining, and it read like a movie.
I've been in love with Arthur from a very young age and this might be my favorite account and (in my mind) the most historical accurate.
Though I found the battle scenes were unnecessarily extensive though it was necessarily for the ending battle vs. the not yet King Arthur, the Woads, the Knights of the Round Table and the Saxons.

A very different take on the Arthurian legend. A warrior Guinevere, no love triangle, no bastard child, and most of the Knights of the Round Table have died before the story begins. The writing style is very descriptive, even somewhat gory, but there is little emotion or passion behind it.
