Trapped in a galaxy three billion light years from home.
Man-about-town Jannigan Beck had no business leading an archaeological expedition through an alien wormhole. After all, he’d always been more at home in an exclusive pleasure emporium than on the bridge of a Barnes LV-900 Lamprey-class scout.
But when Jannigan agreed to lead the ill-fated mission through the Fountain, everything in his life changed.
Now, with the wormhole closed and half his crew gone, Jannigan finds himself hunted by the ruthlessly fanatical Mayir who are hell-bent on recovering an ancient alien artifact with the power to destroy worlds.
You’ll love this second installment in the Star Rim Empire series of swashbuckling space opera adventure, because the tension never lets up and even more mysteries are revealed.
R.A. (Randy) Nargi is the author of the classic Bander sword & sorcery fantasy series and the sci-fi series Star Rim Empire. He lives in Oregon with several rescued dogs, a herd of alpacas, and the occasional mysterious owl.
Randy grew up in New York and has lived in London, Seattle, and New Mexico. He received his BA in Literary Writing from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Nargi is the author of the BANDER ADVENTURES series of “hardboiled fantasy” adventures (a term he coined), the STAR RIM EMPIRE space fantasy series, and the OMNIWORLD ADVENTURES.
Before delving into the world of independent film and publishing, Randy pursued a career in marketing and advertising.
Our hero was not exactly the best candidate for the job, although he pretended otherwise. Now he is in the thick of it and wishing for a career change. But help is a long way away.
This is book two of the series, but it does just fine as a standalone. All the essential bits are covered early on.
This is a science fiction adventure book in the classic sense with alien races, far flung mysteries and lots of space. The story is well written with a vast setting that is both intriguing and mysterious. The characters make a diverse cast and are generally rather intriguing. Our hero gets plenty of opportunities to grow in this book as he faces lots of challenges. As to whether he steps up or not, you will have to read to find out. The plot is the best part as it contains plenty of action, mystery and intrigue which definitely keeps things interesting. Overall, a highly enjoyable story and I look forward to seeing more.
Highly recommended.

As the book's title says, this is book two of the series. However, don't think you'll get all characters reintroduced and presented. There's no such thing as wasted space in this rim-to-rim action tornado. It's definitely worth reading book one just before, as there is a clear and direct continuity in the story.
I hope the cliffhanger for book three gets the same treatment, and can't wait to get my hands on it!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The world building continues to be excellent, the treachery was unexpected, the mysteries are increasing, and I'm extremely glad book 3 is already available. The first two books are well-written page turners, so I'm hoping I have enough will power to stop reading and go to sleep.
What happened to the review I took so much effort to write? I found my review ins Amazon books! I failed to distinguish Amazon review pages from Goodreads, how sloppy can I get?
It was a good story. "The Well of Forever" is a book that I enjoyed. I came to it by the review of one of my former shipmates. This is a much better story and adventure than what I was finding in the 'Best of the Best: 20 Years of the Year's Best Science Fiction' covering 20 years from the 80s to the 2000s.*
This story is adventure and action in space dealing with ships, other beings and potential conflicts.
* Most of the "Best of the Best" stories do with social changes in either the future, or a different version of history. Changes in the ways that women can live and select their clothing! Not much fun, but I will finish reading this collection. At least two of the stories are really good. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_of...
