"Is there a reason why you have chosen my unit for this particular mission, Colonel?" Thomas asked. "Do I need a reason?" "No, sir, I-..." Thomas trailed off and a still silence fell between them before he spoke up again. "You're troubled, sir... I can sense it. There's something about this mission that you're not telling me." Kyden turned around, his steely grey eyes locked with the blue ones of his curious protege. "It is because of that intuition alone that I chose you for this mission..." Kyden approached Thomas and lowered his head. Placing a hand on his shoulder he spoke softly. "You will see things that you won't be able to comprehend. Have questions that don't have answers. Be forced to make decisions that will risk the lives of your unit... if you don't decide carefully..." "Yes, sir." Thomas adjusted the cap on his head and headed towards the door. "I will prepare my unit immediately." "Captain Thomas." Thomas looked back at Colonel Kyden. "People fear what they do not understand. Fear leads to hate. Hate leads to violence. Do not give into fear. Use that brilliant mind of yours to see past the surface." Thomas considered his Colonel's curious words and nodded respectfully before exiting. ~ "Captain, if I may," Merrick said suddenly, snapping Thomas out of his thoughts. "Were you aware that Weapon 86... was a woman?" *** This is a Cyberpunk fantasy story set in a post-apocalyptic world. After "The Event" that wiped out nearly half of the earth's population, The Omery Army, based in Australia, has taken on the task of protecting the remaining civilians and fighting back against mutated enemies like the Xree. On the brink of war with the Xree, General Commander Richard Rockwell has tasked Colonel Kyden's Unit X with retrieving the one weapon that could save them Weapon 86. But what's the truth behind Weapon 86? What is General Commander Rockwell hiding from the very people he claims to be protecting? *** Unlike all my other books, this is not a reverse-harem story.<
I really enjoyed this book. The fantasy/ sci-fi element is well written, I felt I was transported to that universe. Loved all the characters. I love anything with dark skin fmc, we definitely need more black fmc fantasy/ scifi books. I’ve had a look at the authors books and can see that they are mostly reverse harem- I don’t particularly enjoy or read books with multiple love interests but the potential relationship between 3 characters in this book piqued my interest.
First, let me say it took some time to get used to the author’s writing style. This is my second book by this author, and it clicked about a fourth of the way through. There’s a lot of POV switching with no real separation. You could be reading Thomas’ POV, and then all of a sudden, it switches to someone else’s. Several times I would have to go back because things wouldn’t be making sense, and I’d realize that a viewpoint switch had taken place even with the divisions added, but that could be due to the way Amazon interpreted the file (mine were squished together)
Thomas and his squad are sent to retrieve a weapon, Weapon 86, and they’ve been given a substantial amount of money for the times to bid on it. Imagine all of their surprises when they discover the weapon they’ve been sent to get is a woman. However, ever dutiful, Thomas does what he’s been instructed to do, and as the highest bidder, they prepare to leave with Weapon 86, whose name we later learn is Naya.
Before they can leave, she needs to retrieve Milo, who is extremely important and dear to her, and then they’re on their way. However, Jonathan makes a discovery about who she is, and it lands him and Thomas on opposite sides of what they think they should do. A tense moment between the siblings, but they eventually get it worked out and try to come to a decision, which is soon taken out of their hands altogether.
There are a few twists that you don’t see coming, but once they’re known, you realize that one of them makes so much sense, and there was a subtle hint given before.
The book is a bit of an instalove since it takes place over the span of three to four days, I believe. The timeframe was a bit hard to keep up with. But I don’t think the book takes place over the course of more than a week until the epilogue.
I enjoyed the ending of this book and how everyone seemed to get a HEA. I want to read more of these types of books from this author.
Great start to what I will become a series. I am so into the world the author created. The words reached out and grabbed you and made.you feel like you were actually in that world. I cannot wait to read how the relationships built play out and how things evolve and change. This is truly the start of something different. I'm glad I discovered this author and I will be reading more of her work. I highly recommend this book.
I'm not a big sci-fi fan and, to be honest, I got this book based solely on the cover art and blurb. I am so glad I did. The world building was fantastic. The characters ( the good, the not quite good, the bad and the evil) were nicely developed for such a short book. I'm the author continues to show us more of this post-event world. Highly recommend. Little to no editing errors. Ill be reading more from this author.
Good book. Very quick to read, only 15 chapters but filled with so much thriller and military action. My only thing was Thomas and Naya aren’t my favorite pairing but this was a good love story and this entire story definitely had elements of Malevolence borrowed. I’m not sure which book she wrote first. Anywho, this was a good standalone read
This book was different some some of the other books written by this author but it is full of action. The characters are very well written and in the end I can tell without there being any more books in this series how the other characters are going to fit together. I highly recommend this book.
Although the story line was not surprising, I liked the story overall. It had some dragging moments as the foundation of the story was established. But still a good story to read.
Even though this wasn't a reverse harem romance ( which I love, by the way) This way a good change from reverse norm. It was a great read.and left room for more in terms of a series, which would be great.
Not sure I understand most of what was happening in this book. Too many characters to get to know. The storyline is great for a concept but I kind of got lost in some parts of the book.
This story was a journey in different aspects of being human the best and the worst of us . The story was had me crying for the redemption of one of the main characters. It was a well written visual story.
I loved it!!! It was well written and the characters were very enjoyable. I am new to the universe but I have enjoyed all of the books so far. Thank you
The themes of power mad men and use of black bodies to fuel their desires read well and are so much like current times. I look forward to morr books and series.
