Becoming Real: Christ's Call to Authenic Living

Rate this book
Most of us live in a state of unreality, afraid to show our true self. But deep inside, like the renowned Velveteen Rabbit, we long to become real.

Weary of masking true struggles, most of us long for transparency and ache for the embrace of a God who meets them amid the mess of life.

Award-winning author Steven James offers an open invitation for those daring enough to venture into a new realm of vulnerability, where it is admirable to be honest about shortcomings, genuine with love, and unguarded about motives.

Divided into sections on Embarking, Awakening, and Emerging, this book outlines a process that leads to a more abundant life as pretense and defensiveness are left behind.

I was interested in this book because it evoked the speech from "The Velveteen Rabbit" about "becoming real".

I'm not sure I found anything too much different from other books that have the same concepts. Those books are "The Ragamuffin Gospel" by Brennan Manning and "Mere Churchianity" by Michael Spencer.

I am unsure if or how this book influenced "Mere Churchianity" because it was written in 2010 and this book in 2005. I am also unsure if or how "The Ragamuffin Gospel" influenced this book as it was written in 1990.

The concepts that are the same are ruthless honesty and walking with God. This book seems to be more for people to introduce Christ to their friends, as the first part was more about Accepting Jesus.... which, if you've already done so, doesn't interest people unless they have backslidden or turned away (and even then, probably not an interest).

This book has lists, some checklists, some not - about various topics. It might be more organized than others.
