"Welcome, ladies, the next few weeks will decide your future. But before all that, let me introduce you to my son, Nicholas. To one of you, he'll be a future husband. To the rest, a nightmare who will haunt your dreams for whatever time you have left."
Victoria, born into a life of luxury, is about to discover that this will cost her a chance of freedom. She’s been hidden away to protect her virtue. Will the sheltered life leave her struggling in upcoming trials?
Nicholas is the son of a Duke. He’ll inherit the title on his thirtieth birthday. He's been prepared for this moment all his life, but he didn't count on falling for one of the girls he has to torture to choose a bride.
The 'Legacy of Succession' is a dark romantic suspense novel set in a corrupted aristocratic family. Nicholas is arrogant and driven; Victoria is the chaste rich girl. Together, can they free themselves of a society intent on corruption and inflicting pain that’ll destroy more than just their lives?
Let's build a better world together rather than just extinguish the fires of hate.
Nestled in the tranquil rural landscape near London, I'm a British author whose journey from the world of accounting to the realm of writing has been nothing short of transformative. While I occasionally revisit my numbers-oriented past, my days are predominantly filled with the harmonious dance between crafting compelling narratives and tending to my cherished family—my husband, two children, and a lively household of four cats and one dog . In those rare leisure moments, you'll find me lost in the enchanting world of poetry, delighting in the creation (and indulgence) of decadent cakes or fervently capturing moments through the lens of my camera.
Writing emerged as my beacon of hope in navigating the labyrinth of depression and anxiety. My insatiable love for literature and the boundless horizon of travel infuses my tales with the rich tapestry of my adventures. I strive to breathe life into my stories with an air of authenticity that resonates with readers.
Within the pages of my books, you'll encounter heroes exuding charisma and rugged allure, heroines embodying both grace and tenacity, all enveloped in the cloak of dramatic suspense.
~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~ I am not really sure how I feel about this book. On one hand, it had me hooked and turning the pages like a madwoman. On the other hand, there were things that were a bit too much for me. I struggled to believe Victoria would feel ANYTHING other than disgust and hatred towards Nicholas. I certainly didn't buy into her falling in love with him. That said, the writing was very good. It was well paced. The plot was actually super engaging despite it being a little over the top at times. A bit like a Victorian soap opera complete with a secret society (lol). Last, it was all wrapped up in a decent happy for now ending.
~HERO~ NICHOLAS...I could not stand Nicholas through the entirety of this book. He was nothing but a HUGE pussy that had NO backbone and did everything Daddy told him to do. I stopped giving a shit about him the minute he took part in Victoria be humiliated, whipped and tortured so badly she was kept in a coma for three days and almost died. Not to mention, he lets one of the other women suck him off after claiming to have feelings for Victoria. Nicholas is pretty much the sole reason this book didn't get a higher rating.
~HEROINE~ VICTORIA...Victoria was the complete opposite of Nicholas and I ADORED her character. She was strong. She was feisty. She was kicka$$. She held her own despite being repeatedly abused and humiliated. I didn't buy into her falling in love with Nicholas at all. Not after what he allows to be done to her. Nor after she finds out about the OW bj, but her character is what earned this book an extra half star.
~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~ There were actually quite a few interesting secondary characters in this one. A couple I loved and ended up being sad over. More than a few I hated and was ecstatic to see them get what was coming to them. The main secondary character being Nicholas's brother William, who is autistic and whose book is up next in this series.
~HEAT LEVEL~ Surprisingly low. There were just a couple mildly erotic sex scenes in this one. That said, the frequency felt organic to the story.
~ANGST LEVEL - SEXUAL HISTORIES~ High. This one was pretty angsty. Victoria is subjected to a lot of things. Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Verbal abuse. Normally I am not overly bothered by such things as I tend to read some pretty dark books, but I felt the whipping with humiliation scene was a bit too much. It is hard to believe a person would forgive (let alone fall in love) with someone that allows them to be almost beaten to death. There was also some OW drama in the form of the hero allowing another woman to give him a BJ while he was drunk. <--- completely unnecessary in my opinion and was another reason that stopped me from connecting fully with this couple. There was no OM drama. Victoria was a virgin which usually annoys the f-ck out of me, but worked in the context of this particular story. Nicholas was a manwhore and we get to hear the lovely details of his threesome the night before he meets the heroine at the start.
~IN THE END~ This one was a bit of a mixed bag for me. The plot itself was very good. I thought it was quite original, and it had a bit of a Victorian old-time atmospheric feel to it. I loved the setting (Britain). The secret society legacy. The writing itself was also very good. It had some well developed secondary characters. I ADORED the heroine. All very positive points, but I just never warmed up to Nicholas. He was way too weak for my liking, and he allowed horrible things to be done to Victoria. Add in the OW stuff, and I never felt a believable connection between these two characters. Still, I enjoyed it enough (and I loved William) so I am totally onboard with giving the next book a chance.
I have so little time to read anymore but when I do I love a good dark romance. Legacy of Succession was dark romance at its best. Anna Edwards gave us a chillingly twisted read that I couldn't stop thinking about even when I put the book down. The characters haunted me and had me questioning their fates all the way up until the very end.
I can't say much about Victoria and Nicholas without spoiling the story, and honestly I think this is one that is best to go in blind.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Stars ARC BOOK REVIEW Release Date-22/5/18
I was in a bit of a quandary with "Legacy Of Succession" because as much as I devoured this in one sitting; I also hated it as much as I loved it. I read some extremely dark depraved fiction; but for some reason, this story actually made me feel very uncomfortable and itchy at times within my own skin. I think maybe it was because it was some kind of psychological as well as physical torture and centre stage of this freak show stood Nicholas, the future Duke and supposed hero of the hour. I could never quite get my head around how he could participate; his good reasons aside; in the abuse and mishandling of these poor unfortunate women. I did get his reasonings; but to me, they really didn't make that much sense; blaming Victoria for not just accepting her fate blindly; so he could then save her; by choosing her; was frankly insulting to the poor girl. Especially as she had no idea going in what she had been preparing for all these many years. Victoria didn't have the luxury of hindsight; unlike Nicholas; no matter how abhorrent he found the circumstances he was now in; he had been groomed for his role and station from a young age;
"You may have known you would become a monster, but I had no idea I would become your victim."
The callous disregard for the collateral damage traumatised and broken along the way. People are not disposable even when held to a much higher purpose. It's that age-old argument; kill a few to save the many. And I stand firmly in Victoria's court here. So I did actually struggle with the actions of Nicholas; no matter how much he later redeemed himself; I couldn't quite let go of his previous participation in the depraved antics of the society he had been born into. Bit of a dilemma for me that one; one that I had a slight issue overcoming. Victoria; Oh my I adored this girl; sheltered and cosseted behind a persona of privilege and wealth. She is everything enviable to those that would covet her position. But the reality of her life is really just a gilded cage, and when Victoria discovers what she has been moving towards her entire life; well let's just say this girl is not prepared to lay down the good fight. Fiesty, opinionated and stubborn shes going to fight her fate till the bitter end; taking down any enemies that stand before her savagely. On the one hand, I was worried for her ultimate safety here; but on the other, I was screaming. YOU GO, GIRL, kick them where it hurts!!!! extremely vocally from the sidelines. She was one strong girl that was determined not to accept her fate meekly. "Legacy Of Succession" was told in dual POV and seems to be the start of a new series. I am very much interested in reading The next story as it involves Nicholas's autistic brother; William. A subject very much close to my heart as my own son is on the spectrum himself. As a character, I really adored William and can't wait to read more about him and his life. There was also a variety of diverse secondary characters here; the majority were evil personified. I can count on my own hands the people here; that were worth something significant in value. and that number never went into double figures; that's for sure. Got to say "Legacy of Succession was certainly chocked full of truly reprehensible individuals. So moving on, this was a story I raced through; in some ways, I was worried to put it down in case I was to chicken to pick it back up; so I finished in one readathon sitting. Please do be aware, before starting this; that this book deals with some extremely dark situations. If this is at all a trigger for you please do avoid; you have been warned. If you like a walk on the dark side occasionally; then this one should tick all your boxes. I ummed and awed as I said previously, but this was so well written and addictive I decided to push with my gut and go with a higher rating; despite my ill-ease at times within this narrative. This is a story that definitely pushes your boundaries to the extreme. Thank You to the Author for providing me with an ARC of "Legacy Of succession" of which I have reviewed voluntary. All opinions expressed are entirely my own. Reviewed By Beckie Bookworm https://www.facebook.com/beckiebookworm/ www.beckiebookworm.com
I thought this was a good book, it certainly kept me entertained. The depravity of it just had me captivated and waiting to see just how far this author would push the limits. I dont know if I would really say it was very romantic though. By the end I still didnt feel like there was much of a connection between Victoria and Nicholas.i guess the romantic inside of me was just a little disappointed with that.
This was my first book from Anna Edward's but it definitely won't be my last. I loved that she could keep me gripping my kindle harder with ever flip of the page so I can't wait to see what else she can create. Her dark and depraved creation gets a thumbs up from me.
I really liked it. I wish it wasn't so close to Pepper Winters Indebted series which I did Love. I feel like it was either written as either Fan Fiction or as ideas copied from that series. I will continue with the series as William's character was really cute!
Holy shot!!! I love that book. First my mind went in a twister because ohhh my goodness... The story takes place in London present time but I just started 3 times to make sure, that's not some ancient fairy tale... Victoria and Nicholas future Duke of Oakfield... And I was like wth🙄😲 since when does A. Edwards historical romance??? Nope no worries nothing historical 🤔🤨 okay there is some history and a contract that made my head spin, people that made me swear and my heart clench because holy hell... I wanted to hit them over the head repeatedly and scream at them and hit them some more...😱
I can't even explain what happened to me. I just raced through the book, paced from moment to moment, was looking for rescue for my heart and Victoria's existence and Nicholas' soul. Thank you Anna Edwards for the opportunity to read an advanced reader copy of this amazing story. I told Anna Edwards this book cost me my weekend sleep time and her response was kinda "sorry not sorry" 😂🤣😂🤣 what was pretty okay because this story well earned my sleep time. I wait for the next one unpatient to no end.😖🤪😬
Every now and then a book comes along that just blows you away. It's the kind that plays over and over in your mind, persisting long after that last page is read. This is the magic Anna Edwards has created.
Anna Edwards definitely brought the twisted and depraved that's like a sinful dark pleasure. Just the way I love it! The beauty of this dark read is it wasn't afraid to really embrace the darkness but used restraint, there was nothing unnecessarily added.
The depth of characters and overall storyline just staggers me. There were no one dimensional characters to be found in the book. It truly felt like I could walk right into the world she created.
Don't expect to put this book down. It kept me on the edge of my set the entire time with all of the suspense. It grabbed me from the first few pages and didn't let go until the book finished.
I'd been wondering whether to read this or not, so when it was chosen as a Book of the Month read over in the Dark Erotica group I hit the one-click button. I'd mistakenly thought this was a historical read from the blurb, but it's very much contemporary, though chock full of secret societies and their strictures.
I've not read anything by this author before, though I have heard positive things about her work, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I wanted an edge of the seat, anxiety inducing read where I hated the hero until he saved the day and made me love him instead. Whilst I didn't get quite as edgy a read as I'd hoped for, it still held my attention and I read this in one sitting (thank goodness for lazy Sunday afternoons!)
Victoria is the daughter of a Viscount, and whilst she's led a very privileged life, it's also been a very sheltered to the point of isolation existence. It comes as somewhat of a shock when she is taken to Oakfield and told she will have to partake in several trials. Trials that will decide her suitability to marry the Duke's heir, Nicholas. Even worse than failing the trials is what awaits her if she doesn't get chosen as the bride.
I liked Victoria's feisty nature, some reviewers found her immature and felt she threw tantrums, however she was 21 or 22 and had very little true life experience. Her actions and reactions felt believable given her age and upbringing. I did think she went from a very placid little girl at the start of the book, to a headstrong and sometimes foolhardy heroine once she was initiated into Oakfield. However, who knows how we would react in the same situation, if she has a temper like mine she would find it VERY difficult to hold her tongue, LOL!
Nicholas had some times when he was creepily evil and emotionally removed from what he was doing, but mainly he came across as being just as trapped as Victoria was. We saw far too much warmth and caring from him for me to find him dark or evil. In fact by the end of the book he was having to fight for freedom and life just as much as Victoria was.
The Duke and his faceless cronies were the truly evil characters in this and there were some very dark themes/situations that Victoria had to endure. For me the fact that it wasn't the hero/antihero abusing the heroine, and some of the darker scenes were from Nicholas' perspective, lessened the darkness. However that's not to take away from it being a really good read and I've read so much dark stuff lately that I think I'm almost becoming immune to it!
The only real criticism I have of the book is that there wasn't a lot of romance in it. I felt their chemistry but I struggled to believe that they had formed a bond or connection. There wasn't enough 'alone' time together, I appreciate the plot made this difficult but the declarations of love felt very rushed.
Despite the fact that the girls are treated almost as sexual objects, the steam level of the book was fairly low. However it was perfect for the story, which I would recommend to both lovers of dark romance and those looking to dip their toe in darker waters.
Having read the blurb, and seeing it up as botm,i expected a real dark gem. What i got was a good attempt, but not as dark as i thought. Victoria has been raised sheltered from the world. When her father finally takes her out, she’s not prepared for where he takes her and what happens. Nicholas is raised with the knowledge of what his future holds. When the time comes to take his rightful place by choosing a bride, his father takes charge of procedures. Things quickly go downhill from there as Victoria doens’t agree with what happens and Nicholas is forced to “correct” her behaviour. A decent read, one with a few twists. A read i liked, but not truelly loved.....
Anna Edwards has always captured me with her interesting and dynamic books. Her writing always draws me near and end up devouring and falling love with her plots and characters. I have read every single book from her and I never grow tired of her books because I am seriously addicted to them. I have been a fan of her books since I was introduced to her. But Legacy of Succession truly gave me reasons why I am a fan of her books. Legacy of Succession was truly different. I was amazed by the original and thrilling story line that held my attention. It was emanating all kinds of scintillating and nail biting action to give me chills. Anna Edwards wrote a unique story for which I could not keep my eyes away. I was a captive to the words and situations that struck me. Legacy of Succession is a jam packed book that make you quiver and your heart pump.
Legacy of Succession is the first book in the Dark Sovereignty series and it offers all sorts of sinister and mysterious situations. This book is dark. If you are looking for a hearts and flowers book, this is not for you. But if you love all things dark, then this totally the book to read and obsess over. I was pretty much addicted to this story. Legacy of Succession got me on the edge of my seat. I really felt I was in the book. I was definitely reliving a thriller movie right now. How incredible. Compelling. Dark. Wicked. Suspenseful. Legacy of Succession was a riveting dark romance of traditions, history, obligations, aristocracy and love. It was deep. It was revolving. It was intense. Ir was past meets present with a perfect twist to mess with your mind. Legacy of Succession was a intriguing erotic romance with a delicious storyline. Anna Edwards writing keeps getting better. I soaked every single word. Stunning prose and brilliant writing that truly engaged. I loved every single moment of it.
In Legacy of Succession, I was introduced to Nicholas and Victoria both who come from affluent and regal families. They had chemistry and intensity between them. Victoria was brash and strong, She was defiant and did not submit to no one. Victoria truly stole the show. I hated Nicholas. He was a player and an asshole. I would have wanted more interaction between Nicholas and Victoria, I just was not sold on their love to be honest. Their relationship was too rushed. The characters were written well but I wanted more. I am also intrigued by the secondary characters especially William. I can't wait for his book.
All in all Legacy of Succession was a really good book. it was fascinating and different. If you love dark romances, you should definitely give this one a chance.
ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review.
Legacy of Succession is an extremely dark romance. I urge readers who do not enjoy a dark erotica to read the book description carefully before picking up this book. That being said, let’s jump into my review.
Nicholas has been prepared his entire life for the legacy of succession that would take place on his 30th birthday. His mother had been a victim of the trials as has many before her. While Nicholas wants no part of what’s to come, he doesn’t see a way out of playing his part.
Victoria was born into a life of luxury, but kept extremely sheltered by her father never knowing why . . . until he hands her over to the Oakfield Society. She’s thrust into rituals hundreds of years old meant to keep women subservient and the ruling class completely in control. While she may have been sheltered, however, she is not pushover. She’s fierce, willful, stubborn and extremely intelligent. And, she’s not going to bow down to anyone no matter what the cost.
As Nicholas is forced to do things against everything he believes in, he falls more and more for Victoria. It’s up to him to make she wins the trials so together they can try to change the Society once he is in control . . . if only they can survive!
This book . . . it’s a book I hated to love. I struggled with just how dark the content was. The trials are truly corrupt and cringe-worthy. Most of the male characters in the book feel women hold no worth other than to be used to sate their sexual needs. I also couldn’t stop reading because I was compelled to find out how things played out. This was read in one sitting because I couldn’t find a place I felt comfortable stopping at. There were also some characters, that while trapped by their position, were not dark and wanted to end what was happening, including Nicholas, his brother, and their faithful butler.
I was amazed at VIctoria’s strength and determination throughout . . . it was easy to see why Nicholas would choose her. I had a bit of a harder time with Nicholas who played along with what was happening . . . I understood his reasons, but wanted him to act more and quicker. Brother William was a brilliant surprise and I am thrilled to know his story continues with the next book.
Legacy of Succession is truly a dark read, but the suspense and characters will enthrall you if this is your type of book. 4 stars.
i definitely fall in the minority league with this book..
Initially when i read the blurb, all i could think of was the Acquisition trilogy by Celia Aaron (which in as far as i'm concerned defines dark romance) which has a few similarities.. so i was inclined to skip this book (not because of any faults of the Acquisition which was a great trilogy that just didn't end the way i would have preferred, unfortunately). however, because this was the "book of the month" in one of the Groups i'm a member of, i decided:
The Book Legacy of Succession is a book about the aristocrat society, where there are certain rules that govern the society, and as the title says, a succession framework for the next "heir'. the Duke is the "leader" of some sort of this society, and his successor, Nicholas, (his son) takes over the reigns when he turns 30, on condition that he has a wife. the wife is selected through a certain process that entails kidnapping and belittling a selected group of women. basically, this wife's role is to then bear the next Duke to succeed after 30 years.. in comes the heroine, Victoria, unknowingly, this is the world she is born to, and despising it all the way..
My True Thoughts... the plot seemed awesome.. the first few chapters were great, and the story was building... but then, at around 50% Mind you, these two haven't really shown much interest in each other worth noting.. of-course, Victoria and he has commented on how beautiful he thinks she is, but nothing outside of a man admiring a beautiful women amongst other beautiful women.. On top of that, at this same point, Nicholas stops the sexual interaction because he thinks he is falling in love with Victoria.. PLUS, they had only had ONE normal conversation, which didn't leave either of them enlightened in anyway of how good the other could possible be. Is it normal for people to have some explosive sexual tension, sure, but these two didn't have even that. So at this point, that sudden burst of emotions and actions had me like...
i LITERALLY had to go back one chapter and re-read cause i thought i skipped something important in conjuring the plot. but nope! i had not left anything out. so in simple words, my view is that there was ZERO romance. the two main characters had potential to blossom but their story was not developed.. the relationship was just...lacking/non-existent/undeveloped..for lack of better words.
there were some parts in there that irked me too, like ... okay... like WTF? this is supposedly a high network of aristocrats in a heavily guarded room and the heir suddenly runs out with one of the acquisitions, almost escaping, and no one stops him???? and what about the autistic brother, William..? that's like a 5+ hour train ride away and i doubt he had access to a helicopter/plane..even if he did.. HOW THE FUCK when he has never left the house before???
there are a lot of things that just didn't add up for me..i'm not one for logic when it comes to the "novel world" but yho:
HOWEVER i must say despite these shortcomings, the Author kept me interested. i didn't even skim once through my read. i couldn't put the book down cause i was too interested in what would happen.. there's even a second book coming out in November about Nicholas' brother, William and Tamara. You best believe i will definitely be reading that.. i love story's for characters who have issues and have been looked down upon..damaged alphas like William are always the best and i already love him. everyone deserves love, so looking forward to this one!!!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
This is the first book in the Dark Sovereignty series by Anna Edwards. This book is indeed dark and twisted but it was also highly entertaining and very imaginative. Victoria is 21 years old and she’s been living in a gilded cage her whole life. She wasn’t even allowed to attend regular school like her older brother Theo, she was homeschooled by a governess. Her best and only friend, Tammy is the daughter of her mother’s lady’s maid who she grew up with. Victoria has no idea that all these precautions were taken for a reason - to keep her a virgin. One night her father tells her he’s taking her out and she’s so excited to finally be going somewhere. She has no clue it will be the end of her life as she knows it and that she will miss living in her gilded cage she once hated. Nicholas Cavendish is 29 years old and even though he’s been told and prepared his whole life he’s still not fully ready to go through with what is expected of him. His father is a vile, evil man who insists his own son call him “your grace”, he’s currently the Duke of Oakfield and the leader of a secret society. Nicholas must be married and take over as Duke by his thirtieth birthday and then he will become the head of the society. His future bride is among society’s top women who must compete with one another and the winner gets to be his wife. Most of the women like Victoria have no idea what is going to happen to them once they arrive at Oakfield Hall. Some of the women won’t make it out alive and others will pray for death before the competition is over. I don’t want to say much more about the book and give anything away. I will say one thing and that is that I didn’t think anyone could even come close to being as despicable as Joseph Carmichael (from the Estate series by Lily White) but Nicholas’ dad definitely comes close.
Here’s a quote from Nicholas’ awesome father :
“ You just need to marry her, fuck her, and stick a male heir in her belly. Then, once she has given birth, she can go up in the rafters of the house and descend into the kind of obscurity that is only found at the sharp end of a heroin needle - just like your mother. “
FATHER OF THE YEAR ! If ever there was one. Lol.
A quote from Victoria to Nicholas :
“ You may have known you would become a monster, but I had no idea I would become your victim. “
4.5 stars Review by Amy W. Late Night Reviewer for Up All Night w/ Books Blog
I have no doubt my gravestone will read, 'Here lies, the honorable Victoria Hamilton. She died of boredom, but at least, her reputation was intact.'
I had never read any of Anna Edwards work prior to this, but I just had to get my hands on this book. The synopsis, the cover, I was drawn in. Legacy of Succession promised to be my kind of read, and it did not disappoint.
No man will dare go against the society. Nobody of rank within it ever has, and nobody ever will. Money, it's the one thing we all crave, and we'd even sell our daughters just to get it or, in this case, to keep it.
Victoria was raised in seclusion. Her only friend has been away at university and is due to come back soon. Victoria has just turned 21 and can't wait to, with daddy's permission, have a little fun. But all her dreams go up in smoke when she arrives at Oakfield Hall and realizes joining society may be the death of her.
"You may have known you would become a monster, but I had no idea I would become your victim."
Lord above, this is one dark and twisted book. I absolutely love the idea of the society, I do not love the society calm your tits! I just like the idea behind it. This story was unique and I enjoyed meeting each character along the way. There were a few unexpected moments where I was surprised so and so did what they did, but also greatly relieved because yeah it needed to happen. Victoria was not a shy and meek character like you would expect from her background, she was unapologetic and stood up for what she believed in. Nicholas, what to say about Nicholas. He is a grade A a hole to the highest degree. But oh so hot! Plus, he can be sweet when he wants.
I was a fool to believe he might have kindness in him. He's lost--lost to the devil that is his father. I'm going to die. I'm twenty-one years old, a baby, and my life's over.
I fell in love with a few of these characters, Nicholas of course, Victoria most definitely, but also Reggie and William. I am hoping that at some point we get to know what happened to Joanna and get to finally meet Theo. But before any of that we get book two and it is William's book and OMG I am so excited!!! From the first mention of William I was praying that he would be a character I would get more of, but really Anna, December???? I don't know if I can wait that long!
If you like dark and dirty romances then you need to pick this one up!!
OMG. This may not be the twistiest of twisted stories I've ever read, but it has plenty of twists and turns of its own. It's really just wow. It was surprising and really got under my skin.
Nicholas is the heir to the Duke of Oakfield. He's got to follow a tradition in choosing his wife, whether he wants to or not. It's a terrible tradition, but he's trapped.
Victoria has spent her 21 years stuck languishing in her father's house. She's rarely left the house and her only friend is the maid's daughter. When her father suddenly appears and tells her it's time for her to take her place in society. Victoria is very excited to finally get a chance to experience life, right until she finds out exactly what's going to happen.
I LOVE Victoria. I can't even emphasize how much I love her. She's strong, feisty, brave, and really not afraid to fight for anything. She has no problem with telling everyone exactly what she thinks of them and their actions. There are going to be some very sorry people when Victoria is done, I think. I went back and forth on Nicholas. Sometimes I liked him, sometimes I didn't. He struggled a lot, and I enjoyed seeing what was going on in his head while he struggled with what was going on. This book really needed the dual POV, I can't see how it would've worked with just a single POV, and I'm glad I didn't have to.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes next.
DNF skimmed this was a bad cliche of every secret society book I’ve ever read.it wasn’t dark to me… it didn’t draw me in or make me feel. The H was weak and tstl and the fmc had to rescue him… WTH? She was the one whipped to Alma’s dead and sold into sexual slavery to be murdered.
And what a legacy the main characters of this dark and shocking tale have to encounter and endure.... this was a deliciously wicked book, which managed to perfectly balance - cruelty, avarice and depravity with humour, selflessness and an unexpected love story..
The author has a wonderful imagination, creating a diverse mix of characters: some kind and generous, some despicable and murderous; mostly they are flawed; and all are multifaceted and believable... the protagonists are the worthy stars: she is a strong willed but naive young woman and he is a powerful and driven man...both are frustrating at times and both show courage and loyalty, but neither has control over their destiny, and their future, and that of the others caught up in their world, is a precarious and an uncertain one...
This is an unnerving and suspenseful romance; I was captivated by the the main characters’ stories and whilst the book ends without a cliffhanger there are clearly many more individuals who will be faced with equally daunting and deadly challenges in the coming instalments..I look forward to reading more...I received an advanced copy of this book from the author.
I finished this book last night and can honestly say it was one of those I simply could not put down! I wanted to read it every chance I got! I am a fan of Anna Edwards, having read all of her work so far, and I believe Legacy of Succession is now my favorite of her books! I went into this one blind- not reading the blurb- and was pulled in right from the very first few chapters. Nicholas comes across as a playboy at the very beginning. He's celebrating his birthday and seems happy, but there's an underlying sadness to the joyous occasion. Then we meet Victoria, a sheltered young woman who longs to get out from under her father's thumb and see the world. I was on the edge of my seat as this story progressed, anxious to see what would happen between these two characters and how they would handle the life that was chosen for them. The plot is completely original, with characters you love and despise, and each chapter leaves you begging for more! I'm so glad I got the chance to read this book - it's definitely going on my all-time favorites list!!
Anna Edwards’s latest “Legacy of Succession” is a deliciously dark erotic romance. This book will seriously blow your mind. The story takes place in London present time. Legacy of Succession is the first book in the Dark Sovereignty series and it offers all sorts of sinister and intriguing situations. Let me start by saying this is one dark romance read. It is Intense, Erotic, Wicked, Compelling, Horrifying and Suspenseful. Victoria has been groomed all her 21 years. She has been given the best of everything materially but she hasn’t been allowed freedom- freedom to leave, freedom to have friends, freedom to move around as she likes. She is a prisoner in her home. Nicholas has been prepared his entire life for the legacy of succession that would take place on his 30th birthday. Nicholas is a man who doesn’t want any part of whats coming up because of what his mother went thru, but he knows of no way out. What Nicholas must do is participate in the selection process of his wife, and assume leadership of the "Society" on his 30th birthday. Victoria was handed over by her father to the Oakfield Society. She is completely confused and doesn’t understand what is going on. Soon she finds out that she has been thrust into rituals that are hundreds of years old which are meant to keep women subservient and the ruling class of men completely in control. Victoria is not about to let them do this to her. She is strong, independent, and very intelligent. She will never bow to anyone. Neither of them like what is happening. Problems are soon happening for Victoria because she cannot keep her mouth shut. Nicholas tells Victoria she needs to cooperate or else things will get worse for her. He does try to protect her and to explain things to help her understand. A bond is forming between these two and the chemistry is electric. Oh the tests that the women are made to go thru, the trials…Do any of the women survive? Will Nicholas admit how deep his feelings run for Victoria and save her? Will Victoria survive her trials to end up with Nicholas ? What else is hiding in the dark that can come and rear its ugly head? This is a story that will get you angry, will have you in tears, will have you needing a cold glass of something icy, will have you rooting for the main characters. This is one awesome dark and erotic romance that will take you on a delicious emotional roller coaster.
My Rating: 4.6 stars ***** “I received an advanced copy of this book from the author at no cost to me."
This is a very well written tale about the depravities of the well-to-do elite socialites of the UK. A "Society" was established many, many generations prior to this story. This "Society" was dedicated to the debauchery of the coming-of-age young women within their ranks. When the "Society" leader's eldest son reaches the age of 29, he must participate in the selection process of his wife, and assume leadership of the "Society" on his 30th birthday. The main characters, Nicholas and Victoria are very well developed with an engrossing storyline following the dictates of the "Society". Neither of them like what is happening. Victoria cannot keep her mouth shut, which causes severe repercussions. Nicholas tries to make her see reason and to protect her, much to her chagrin. Each potential wife is faced with several trials to complete. The trials test the meddle of the women. Not every test is the same for all of them. Will any of the women survive the trials they are put through? Do they want to survive the trials? Not all women do. Can the feelings that Nicholas is developing for Victoria reign supreme and save her? Will Victoria survive her trials to be with Nicholas, whom she is starting to care for? What other secrets are hiding in the dark? Be sure to add this book to your must-read list.
Legacy of Succession should be the #1 read of the year! Anna Edwards an Excellent story teller already, has topped herself and blown it out of stratosphere! Set in England, where past meets present! Victoria has been groomed all her 21 years. The best education clothes environment. What she hasn't had is freedom, to leave the house no dates friends, shopping, college. Nicholas has all the freedom of the rich man he has women booze, fast cars. Then on his 29th birthday, it's time to take his place, step into his role. The Duke of Oakfield, and the head of the Oakfield Society. You will cry for the characters, you will get angry for them, you will cheer them on, and you will be Thankful it's not you! And you will be sad at that end, that there's not more!
A very dark, raw and disturbing read. There is a lot of pain and drama in this book. It features very intense scenes of abuse, humiliation and torture. So be warned if these are triggers for you or just a huge turn off. Nicholas and Victoria must survive archaic family traditions, rules of a barbarous secret society and horrifying situations. It is a page turning, jaw dropper of a book. This book stuns with its complexities, shocks you with it's rawness, and moves you with hope because if love can blossom in these conditions, it proves that there is always hope for love. I can't wait for William's story! This is my totally honest, voluntary review.
Holy moly. Just wow. Seriously this book sucks you in like no other. The dark and twisted ways of the English nobility will keep you glued to the pages. I so don't want to give too much away with this one. It's sooooooooooo good. Victoria is awesome. She's feisty and headstrong. Never backs down or breaks no matter what happens. I love the strength she has. At first you when you Nicholas you think he's somewhat of a dick. But he is doing what he too needs to do survive his father the Duke. You feel for Nicholas and Victoria through the whole trial. You see the attraction build and hope for the best. I love these two. Ugh the twists and the Duke. THIS IS A MUST READ. This one blew me away. I'm now left patiently waiting until the next book to come because I can't wait for Williams story.
Wow what a story. I seriously cannot believe this is my first read by this author. I can’t wait to read more of her previous books.
Nicholas and Victoria. Wow. Their story captivated me from start to finish. Their fathers had their lives planned out for them since birth. Neither was happy with what was to become of them. I loved how strong Victoria was. She showed so much strength and spirit that although it wasn’t in her best interest to be vocal she couldn’t help it. I loved when Nicholas true feelings would come out. He wanted to get away from his family but he knew he couldn’t. That didn’t stop him from fighting though.
This is a fabulous read. I went outside to sit in the sun to read a few chapters and ended up reading the whole book.
I may have squealed when I saw that William was getting his own story. I’m really looking forward to reading that.
Legacy of Succession by Anna Edwards will blow your socks off especially if you love your romance a little dark and twisted! Nicholas and Victoria's story is not your usual boy meets girl and they fall in love, no this is more like girl falls in love with her captor while trying to change what has always been her inevitable destiny, it's not quite a stockholm syndrome scenario but as close to it as you can get while still fighting for your human rights. As passion and lust flares between them it becomes a battle of wills, with Victoria never quite learning her place as Nicholas becomes her tormentor. This book is based around a secret society of men that only the rich and powerful join. They hand over their daughters willingly, hoping that she will be chosen as the wife of the next Duke and head of the society. Having now read a few books with a similar dark theme as this i've become a little unshockable or so I thought until I read this! Anna Edwards has not only written a book full of sex, depravity and mind boggling insanity she has done it with so much more finesse than so many others in this genre. I was utterly captivated by this book from start to finish, it's the kind of story that sucks you in and keeps you wanting to know what happens next while peeping through the gaps between your fingers. This truly is a masterpiece of dark/horror erotic romantic fiction. A massively well deserved 5 Stars!
I usually write reviews right after reading, but this story was something more, that I needed to rethink about. Victoria is a girl that was hidden from the world in the manor of her father, for 21 years. She ha no friends, beside daughter of a maid. She knows nothing of her fate. One day her father came and told her to prepare. What for? A testing to become some Duchess that will be in sub position to her husband - future Duke. She is feisty, strong-willed, powerful in her mouth an made me fall in love with her. She knows that she can't break that easily. I LOVE HER! Nicolas, he was also something that I needed to think about... a son of a monster, that needs to choose his wife from the trials. How will he react to them, will he be ok with everything that will happen to the women? Will he indulge in this power manifest done by his father and secret society? Join them in this dark hidden life that is so foul that will leave you speechless and in so much ANGER! I enjoyed every second of this read du to well-builded characters and background that was masterfully created. This book is one of the best 9ad the darkest) books I have read this year! For sure, I will read book 2 in this series!!
This book was amazing! It was dark and twisted, a non stop roller coaster....I literally stayed up all night to read it, I didn't put it down once! Nicholas is the heir to a secret society, a society with rules and guidelines for everything, including deciding who he will marry. Its not that simple though, because the process of picking a bride is dark and depraved, brutal at times. Victoria is one of the women presented to him as a possible bride, and she wants nothing to do with the society...unfortunately she already belongs to them. She's a strong, smart and determined woman though, who refuses to give up. There are so many secrets and betrayals, twists and turns, it's a deliciously twisted story! I recommend it to anyone who likes their romances on the darker side!
Loved, this, amazing intense emotional dark sad loving story of Nicholas and Victoria. Started this book and couldn't put it down.Looking forward to the next one.
