Better story, but I absolutely hate the romance in this one. Alice and Boris are AlWAYS fighting and Boris is ALWAYS getting jealous and thinking she wants to be with someone else. I mean you're seriously going to be jealous over her petting a CAT??

Much heartbreak because I love the main series so much, but I can't read more of this series with how much I dislike the constant back-and-forth of "I thought you were mine and you need to do X thing to prove you are."

The one thing I DID like though is the battle/tension between Boris and Ace! THAT was really good and appreciated how this spin-off made Ace unhinged, but not so unhinged that it was extremely disturbing like what I've seen in Knight's Knowledge. *shivers*

Despite I ordered volume three a while back and it should be here soon, I don't have any plans to read it. I'm just going to stick with the fun Boris in the main series and call it a day.

A great romance story, if you love: zero chemistry; dick measuring contests; attempted assault explained away as "I just love you so much I can't control myself!"; the girl who was almost assaulted deciding her lack of consent was ok because she likes the guy, overall; the bf getting jealous for because his gf talked to another dude; and being forced to imagine a cat-boy with an erection.

I bought the first 3 out of 7 in this series and I'd just be hate-reading the 3rd volume at this point, so I'm calling it quits.

Ah, yes. More problematic drama and borderline erm.... unhealthy relationships. Another day in Wonderland! (At least, this version of it) I do hope this spin-off series will go deeper into Alice's psyche and reveal the truth of her sister and past, because MY GODS, this damn series teases it a lot!!

Review for complete series

The Cheshire Cat's spin off in this series sadly has a very weak start, although it does catch itself and turns into a reasonably well thought out series - surprisingly longer than than the main series at that. I think one of the biggest issues is that Boris' personality is quite different from what he is like in the original series and he is arguably one of the more loveable characters. In this spin off, he is pushy and possessive, borderline arrogant and strangely flirtatious. In the original, he seems a lot more innocent and perhaps more oblivious to love, he is clearly affectionate toward Alice but it is never really shown in an obvious romantic way whereas here it is sexual from the start. I also found Boris' nicknames for Alice rather off putting. As the story progresses, Boris luckily becomes a bit more mellow. While he still uses the nicknames for Alice, he shifts back a bit closer to his original personality.

The story also has a strangely slow start, I found the first few volumes quite hard to get through. That might be because the entire focus is on the back and forth between Alice and Boris. Unlike most of the other spin off series, though, this one actually has a plot besides the relationship running in the background, and it's a more than decent one that could have easily been part of the main series. It adds more depth to Alice's character and background, has some good tension and mysteries going on and also lets us get to know some of the other characters better. Ace is handled much better in this instalment than he was in his own spin off and also Peter is a much more compelling character than he was in the original series.

The series as a whole isn't as good as the main series, and I am a little sad that they didn't do Boris justice. But I do think that it is one of the better spin offs and it does add value to the franchise over all. It has a rocky start but if you can get past the first volumes it's a worthwhile read. It's also worth noting that each volume has some bonus stories at the end that also focus on Alice and Boris but follow an entirely different plot line - these are not highlighted well enough can it can easily happen that one continues reading without realising one has left the main story and moved on into the bonus which can really be confusing at times. I always flipped through the book to mark there the bonus story starts before starting to read to avoid just that.

So far, this has proven an interesting continuation. There's certainly a lot of focus on explaining aspects of the world and the shifts that occur within it, and I feel like the way this story is being drawn out over seven volumes is really allowing for that to be crafted organically. Typically a lot of these Clover stories tend to just give you the basics and leave it be, but I enjoy actually getting to see the way the world shifting has impacted the various characters.

Ace being in here has proven especially interesting; he seems to be the most impacted by the "move" and I really would like to see this story bring more of his character's mysteries to bear. That's really kind of a side thing (I think) but I've struggled with his character from the beginning and I really want to see him explored and explained in a way that will allow me to appreciate his character depth. I'm really hoping that'll prove to be the case with this side series but we'll see.

Alice and Boris's tendencies to miss each other like ships passing in the night can be a little frustrating, but at least it makes a degree of sense here. They're both giving off mixed signals, and it takes most of this volume for them to get to a point where they communicate more clearly. Again, still not the biggest fan of them as a couple but being able to at least understand how they could end up as a couple without feeling like tearing my hair out in the process is something I'm willing to settle for.

Damn!! I was interested in this spinoff, but certainly not interested enough to buy five more volumes!!!

The "Alice in the Country of..." manga series is an interesting concept, but good god, nothing truly ever happens, the plot does not progress, so the number of volumes absolutely does not need to be this high. 💀
HOWEVER, all the online Tumblr/Wordpress essays are keeping me entertained. Thank you so much to all the Kuni no Alice girlies, I appreciate your passion and hard work. 🙇‍♀️

A FUIR !

I give this book 3.5 ⭐️ I think that the book was ok I was honestly surprised when Alice agreed to date borris. I also think that it’s cute how borris is so protective over Alice as well as territorial.

I love at the end the author wrote that they're allergic to cats so they're not actually sure how cats react. Me too, man. Me too.

omg! That ending! I enjoyed volume 1 & was already planning to continue on with the whole "Chershire Cat Waltz" series to the end. Then it ended with such a cliffhanger that I have to read on, :) (even though I already know she has to live cause there's 5 more of these, but still. XD)

Anyway! "Alice in the country of clover Cheshire Cat Waltz"

This is a manga based off a video game. It's sort of a 2nd follow up series to the "Alice and the country of hearts" books. But here Alice decided to stay in wonderland but is just friends with all the characters. Each different book or mini series within the world of clover follows Alice's relationship with different characters development from friendship into a romantic relationship. "Chershire cat Waltz" focuses on her with Boris, a boy with cat ears, tails, and a wicked punk look. He,ca long with Julius, are my favorite characters, so right off, I was sure I'd enjoy these, at least a little.

But I've Been pleasantly surprised this go around. :) I'm liking this whole 7 books thing. It's giving us much more time to learn about and enjoy, not only the growth of the characters & their relationships, but also the world itself. :) the whale in the woods was neat. A bigger plot also seems to be developing as Boris & ace keep butting heads over roles. Poor ace. I think he's going a bit crazier with out his buddy Juluis around to keep him together. :'(

Alice seems to be getting a bit more of a backbone here to, making her boundaries clear. & Boris, while wanting to moved quicker, is actually respectful of her boundaries. I always liked that about him. That he really listens and has always been the most willing of the bunch to think about how his actions effect Alice, & to even try and better himself for her. *swoon* not really swooning, cause I'm not overly romantic, but it is really sweet. (Also like him cause he comes across as least rapey. Like blood. The dude gives off creepy stalker vibes, I shit you not.)

Really loving that I've got time to really get to know these guys and really enjoy the story.

& now, since I liked this so much, I think I'll show a few quotes I liked. :)
"You're definitely not perfect. But you don't have to be." - Boris
"I could never start hating you after one lousy fight." - Boris

"Guys get reactions and it sucks, okay." - Boris. So freaking funny! I love this bit! Especially Alice's face when she finally gets his meaning. :D

The art is so pretty too!

I think my least favorite thing was this: "I'll leave & never come back." -Alice. -_- I think it was meant to be cute & funny. You know, a joke. But it's really not. It's cruel. & definitely not something you should threaten. Not even as a joke. Not part of a healthy relationship, people! Especially if ur partner has self esteem issues. (Not that Boris has that problem but that's no my point.) it could be really damaging to them. :(

Over all though, I really enjoyed it. :) recommend for manga fans & anyone who has read and enjoyed the books in "alice in the country of hearts."

Starting off with Boris walking away from Alice, I am wondering how she will make it up to him, however, the question is answered when all role holders are to attend the annual meeting.

28-6-2022:
I've read this series so many times, but it's still just as amazing. See my review for Alice in the Country of Clover: Cheshire Cat Waltz, Vol. 1 for more details.

The characters are so loveable. They are all complex and different. This world is so interesting too. The rules, the game, I want to learn more and more about it which is why I keep reading more and more of these kuni no Alice books.

This volume is the start of Boris and Alice's story, as they are starting to realise how they feel. Their romance is pretty slow burn for a romance story, especially considering they are already good friends when the story begins. Alice has a lot of bagage. Boris has no idea how to love someone. They're some couple, but that makes it funny.

Do I think this romance is healthy? Not really. But nothing in this "wonderland" is what we would consider normal/healthy, and I feel like that, following the rules of their world, it's pretty healthy. unhealthy/creepy would be Peter, Ace and Blood, imo.

I like how this book doesn't end when they get together, but instead focuses on them getting used to their relationship. And while the main focus of this series is the relationship, it's not all that happens, as we have a whole subplot with the mafia (which isn't as crazy as it sounds if you know this series).

I really like how this delves into the relationship between Borris and Alice once they start dating. Not many series focus on the "after" so much as they do "how they became a couple." This goes for both manga and other media.

This is certainly an enjoyable read and I honestly am having a ton of fun with this spin off. If you're hesitant about this, please take a look at my review for the first volume, which will explain more on what Clover is vs Hearts and otome games in general.

I was a little shocked by how daring the dialogue became. Borris and Alice make out and after he goes into a kind of detailed rant on how stuff like that "excites" men and stuff when Alice falls asleep lol so I was pretty surprised.

Ace gets developed and a huge conflict sparks at the end of the volume with Alice's life in danger. Though we all know she can't die yet since there's 7 volumes in this. Still, it was really surprising.

"You don't know yet...how comfortable I feel in your arms...and how important you are in my life. But maybe someday you will."

Hmmm. I don't fucking know, Alice. Maybe he has no idea because you treat him like actual garbage. Seriously, every time Boris tries to kiss her, she acts like he's trying to rape her saying stuff like "NO WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU'RE FORCING ME." Hahahahah ok. Sure, Alice, sure. Also, when is she going to learn that literally everyone in Wonderland is in love with her? She always acts so surprised. Bitch, this is nothing new.

Honestly, why am I still reading this? I've already requested volume 3 from the library but I know it's just going to make me angry.

The subtitle for this book should be, Alice: a real dumb bitch.

The more Alice starts to fall for Boris, the more she guilt she feels in relation to the world she came from. Instead of helping Alice want to stay in Wonderland, her love for Boris may instead be pulling her back to her former life. Ace only further complicates matters as he wants Alice to continue to feel as lost as he does.

I must say, the Cheshire Cat cleans up nicely in the dress clothes all characters wear for the requisite Assembly. I like his character design in general, except his usual clothes. I know he's supposed to be a bit of a punk, but...yeah, the dress clothes are better.

Volume 2: A lot of this volume deals with Alice and Boris. Boris is definitely in love with Alice and Alice seems to be falling for him. He wants to go faster than she does, though, and that ends up leading to some arguments between the two.

One of the unusual things is her watching a whale swimming through the forest.

Ace and Boris end up fighting and Ace ends up murdering a waitress which apparently is not something that draws the ire of law enforcement in Wonderland. This Wonderland is without doubt a violent place. There are also still some problems with the movement of the land.

I LOVE AITCOC!!!!!!!!!
I know I said this before, but Boris is my fav! He is just so...awesome.
However, I liked him better in AITCOH.
He seems more forceful now. But, still, he is amazing.
Btw, Elliot!!!!!!!!!!! You're my second fav. Again, I hope you're featured more in the third manga.
Anyway,
This awesome manga is not for you.
It is mine. Only mine.
You can not have it.

I jumped into this series at vol. 2 since my library no longer carries vol. 1! Not knowing what to expect beyond a traditional looking girl's manga, i found myself quickly lost. at first I thought it was because i missed the first volume, but i've now come to realize after having read no.'s 3 and 4, that there's not much point to this series (I'm being generous with the 2 stars because i like the artwork).

CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate the way Peter rhymes when he talks in these side stories... so annoying. I loved Alice in Boris’s clothes. It is so sassy and adorable. I wish Alice would be more into Boris and just let him be affectionate. She is so weird and backwards I wanna smack her! I want more kiss love in this series!!!

"I was never a fan of Alice in Wonderland even if I watched the Disney version when I was a kid. I also didn’t appreciate the condensed classic version of it. However, this second volume of Alice in the Country of Clover - Cheshire Cat Waltz convinced me to love its retelling."

I think I might just be getting tired of this manga series. This volume was a bit confusing, didn't spend much time with scenes that might have been interesting (like the interior of the inn where Alice works) and didn't seem to cover much new ground.

I must say I enjoyed the original Alice in the Country of Hearts series a lot better than this one. There is not much story development, nor is there much growth of character.
I will continue to read the series, as I like the character of Boris (he's a kitty cat!)

Story line is ok. Art is different but nice, just too much Boris and Alice. I want something different. But I can't condemn a piece of work based on the fact I don't agree with the drug out story line.
