tropes: friends to enemies to lovers

i've been craving a bully romance, even though I always get angry, I still love reading bully.

my problem with this book is that it had 55 chapters and i think 3 chapters were on the hero's pov during the present. the reason why he hates her is that he thinks she's the reason why his best friend killed himself, and since page one we know that, so why read about how he felt for her in the PAST?
i don't like flashbacks, especially when they are useless! i didn't care that he had a crush on her, i wanted to know how he was feeling as he was doing all the bad things to her.
another problem was that even though i couldn't put the book down, at 80% i was pretty much bored, the reveal about what really happened to the best friend was boring.

This is a well written book with a cast of strong characters centering on Andie and Gunner. The author does a terrific job building the story and had me glued to the pages with the dark ,intense story line. She brings a friends to lovers romance ,adds in a touch of mystery ,some very steamy scenes and tons of emotions throughout. She moves the story fluidly with her perfectly painted scenes and delivers a fantastic story. Highly recommend this book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

The execution on this one was pretty poor. It alternates POV from past and present and has h and H POV as well. So four different POVs. It was so choppy that it made it hard to settle into the story or to really connect with the characters.

This is a friends to enemies to lovers story. The problem with this trope when getting so many past POVs is that we get to see too much of the H and h as friends so by the time they get together it’s hard to see them as anything else. There was nothing different about their intimacy, connection, chemistry and the just overall feel of their relationship from when they were friends and now lovers aside from they now have sex. Their jokes all stayed the same, the way they talked to each other stayed the same, the way they touched each other (aside from the sex but the other physical stuff) etc etc. Not only that but the relationships the h and H had with their other friends was the exact same relationship that they had with each other. The author tried to tell us that things between the H and hs friendship was soooooooo different but we didn’t actually see that. If anything he was nicer to Aurelia and she was sweeter to Cole. With a bully romance I need a lot of chemistry and connection to make the angst and pain worth it and we didn’t get it here. They were too much like bros. It was gross actually but honestly I knew it would most likely have this problem as most fiends to lovers do but I kept reading because I was generally interested in the plot.

The stuff with the hs Mom really pissed me off too. It just didn’t make sense from what we knew about their mother/daughter relationship and that being the catalyst for when the H and hs relationship really changed just felt so unsatisfying. This was a mom who immediately moved her daughter away from the town after things got bad but then she starts hearing rumors from someone “trusted” and kicks her daughter out of the house. What?? I get the authors overall theme of we trust and not keeping secrets but I didn’t like it applied to this relationship after everything we were told and showed before. It just made everything feel so cheap and honestly made the author not trustworthy because it was pretty much at that point when I realized nothing we learned was really going to matter and the author was just going to do whatever she wanted to push the story along. So freaking annoying and unsatisfying and it just felt like so much of my time was wasted reading stuff that wasn’t even important.

I probably would have enjoyed everything plot related better, which could have bumped up the rating, had it been shorter and less draggy to find any information out. The whole book takes place over about a week and half-two weeks. The short timeline along with the plot stuff being revealed slowly made it feel very tedious. It felt like the author was writing from a checklist of what she knows “needs” to be in a bully book to make us forgive the H: a public calming scene, a public calling out the OW scene, a big old speech, the H saving the h, etc etc.

Blah, It was just so generic and uninspired. I won’t read book two.

Overall: 1.5 because I really am that annoyed with how bad the execution of this one was.

I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! I am WRECKED Y’ALL. “Broken Pretty Things” by Amber Faye was literally EVERYTHING I love in an enemies to lovers story and so much MORE. Personally, I’ve been in sort of a reading slump for awhile, and this was just the book I needed to change that. It honestly only took me 2 days (sleepless days, but so worth it though)to finish, since it was so HARD to book this book down. I was hooked instantly from the very first page. This story was just all around perfection, and just felt so real. Also the WRITING, my goodness!!! It was just so easy to effortlessly dive right in and engulf yourself in the story, and the world of these characters. Overall, this book has definitely become a new favorite of mine this year and one I would HIGHLY recommend for all to pick up and read. Absolutely a 10/10!

-Andie & Gunnar-
Oh my lord! The chemistry between these two was so H O T! Literally oozing out of the pages, and I ate it all up. Andie and Gunnar were childhood best friends, turned enemies and then lovers, that put me through the wringer with all their pain and heartbreak, but also fondness in their eventual healing, and love that they had for one another. These two were the definition of soulmates! They just got each other in ways no other could, and given their shared history they knew each other the best. Despite all they had to deal with to finally find their happiness with one another, I’m glad that they were able to work through it all to find their way back to each other in the end.

Now I definitely cherished Gunnar in all of his hotness glory(so no offense to him), but I really did LOVE Andie as the main heroine in this story. She really isn’t your typical heroine that can sometimes be a pushover. NO, this girl definitely had a backbone that kept Gunnar on his toes. I also thought she was such an AMAZING and STRONG female character given all that she endured in the past, as well as in the present. Andie’s strength, and resilience through it all was just so inspiring! I have tons of respect for her character as a whole, and the way she was written overall. I can definitely say she is one of my ALL TIME favorite female leads in any story I’ve read so far.

-Other things I LOVED-
Andie’s girl gang: Hero & Ulla
I loved the dynamic between Andie and her two new friends Hero and Ulla. These moments between all three of them was such a treat to read. I thought these two were the perfect support system Andie needed in certain moments, to help get her through the hardships when she had no one in her corner.

Shout out to my other favorite girl Hero! I LIVED for any scenes Hero was in. Especially her advice on special toys, and her HILARIOUS Halloween costume. Her character carried such a special quality that needed to be protected at all cost. Her innocence was absolutely so cute!!! Crossing my fingers that we get a book for Hero. I really hope that we see more in store for her future in the series, because I would ABSOLUTELY read it.

Also let’s not forget about Ulla. She too was also HILARIOUS. Her aggressiveness, and scheming was such entertainment in parts of the story. She truly balanced the group well, and fit right in with Andie and Hero like she always belonged there. I too also hope we see more of her story, as well in upcoming books in the series.

HONESTLY, there is so much more in the book that I could go on and on about, because there really is more to the story besides Andie and Gunnar, but to try and keep this short and simple at least, I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading this book. This is the first I’ve read by Amber Faye, and most definitely NOT my last. I can definitely say I am a huge fan, and am highly looking forward to her plans for the rest of the series and any other books she releases in the future. AGAIN, I highly recommend giving this book a read because you will not be disappointed. Anyways, happy reading to you all!

***Copy was given in exchange for an honest review***

Andi and Gunnar used to be best friends until Andi's boyfriend/other best friend, Cole, kills himself at a party. The blame is thrown at Andi's feet, accusations are thrown and hate is spewed. Andi moves away and after six months is back. Most people still hate her and are trying their hardest to get her to leave and though she doesn't want to be there she knows Cole's death is not on the up and up and is set on proving that it was not her fault maybe not even a suicide at all.
This story switches from the present to the past. It shows the friendships building to the tragic incident that changes everything.
I love a good friends to enemies to lover's story and I gotta say Broken Pretty Things is now officially in my top ten faves! Andi and Gunnar's story is full of happiness, sadness and sexiness. I loved it!

It’s a shame this has such a generic and forgettable title and cover, because it’s a standout book. In the overcrowded bully genre, this one is exceptionally well done. The biggest hurdle with the bully trope is that the guy has to have a reason for his behavior that he thinks is justified. But, if he’s too much of an idiot – usually, it’s that he blames the girl for something that’s obviously not her fault– then it’s hard for the reader to find a moron sexy.

Well, this one shows how to do it. Gunner’s reasons for bullying Andie revolve around a misunderstanding, which I usually hate as a trope. But his reasons for blaming her are valid – why wouldn’t he believe Cole’s apparent note? He’s not a total idiot for believing it. And once he realizes that there’s more to the story, he adjusts his behavior quickly. Andie also makes him work for it. He probably could have groveled a bit more than he did, but she’s in no way a doormat and doesn’t let him get away with waving off his earlier behavior towards her.

The side characters are also stellar. Hero and Ulla are hilarious. In these kinds of books, often a random girl befriends the heroine and the girl just happens to have no other friends or a life, almost as if she exists solely to be the heroine’s new friend. But here, Hero and Ulla also have very valid reasons for not having other friends, and they are total scene-stealers.

The murder mystery element also gives this a dash of suspense and intrigue. All in all, if you’re looking for a bully read, this is an especially good one. I'll definitely keep an eye out for Amber Faye's future work.

I enjoyed this story. However the bullying can be triggering for some. The bullying at the beginning of the story was a bit intense but being a fan of dark, bully stories, it didn't phase me.

The story starts off with the death/suicide? of Cole, the best friend of the MC's. The plot being that the H blames the h for Cole's suicide because he believes the h, Andie was cheating on Cole and broke his heart. The plot becomes complicated because it turns out Andie wasn't really dating Cole and they had a fake relationship that they kept from everyone except Cole's boyfriend. Out of a great loyalty to Cole, Andie refuses to liberate herself by holding onto the secret that Cole is gay and that their relationship was fake. Thus begins the bullying by the H, Gunnar who turns the school and their best friends against Andie.

Andie - a beautiful teen and an avid dancer. She was part of the IT trio with Gunnar and Cole. It seems like this trio not only ruled the school but were also the untouchable, mean crowd. It isn't until Andie is on the outside looking in that she realizes how the IT crowd is arrogant, self centered, snooty behaviour. Unfortunately it is too little, too late and she doesn't really repent for her part in any past snooty behaviour. In fact she revels in her memories of being untouchable and having the attention and protection of both Gunnar and Cole. Her only regret is that she's no longer the center of Gunnar's orbit. She goes on to have several shallow moments including asking Gunnar if she's pretty as opposed to questioning his motives or trying to appeal to his sense of loyalty or decency. Although she's bullied, Andie has a backbone and survives without too much damage. Her lack of self awareness and her shallowness didn't really make her too likeable. She was ok.

Gunnar - hot, alphahole, arrogant, holier than thou. He thinks he's better than everyone because he listens to music that's not top 40...which is cool but not recognition worthy. Gunnar is one-track minded and not very observant. He's too butthurt about the fact that Andie chose Cole instead of him to notice that their relationship is fake, that they don't kiss or take part in any of the sex games that their group plays. Gunnar starts off as a strong bully but soon begins to falter not because he has doubts but because he lusts after Andie and gives in to his temptations.

This couple had a lot of chemistry and their physical interactions were steamy. I enjoyed the push-pull but it was annoying that they circled around and refused to acknowledge each other's truths. So I was a bit put off by Andie's bipolar efforts to be strong and then be a completely simpering, weak idiot who allows Gunnar to walk all over her, not in an alpha way. Gunnar just becomes a complete idiot who can't hold true to his convictions much less try to make sense of Andie's explanations.

So the plot unravels slowly until we discover what really happened in a very farfetched event. Then everything falls into place and everyone gets what they deserve.

There were a few things that irked me like how fast Andie, Hero and Ulla become BFFs...in Ulla's case, over 5 minutes after she literally meets Andie. Hero and Ulla put themselves out there, earning the wrath of the popular crowd, to save Andie while she's done nothing to ingratiate herself to them. Then there's the whole "this town sucks" and the stupid speeches about the town and how they have to do better etc....it felt like a 60's sitcom or something equally ridiculous that everyone in the town was blamed for the selfish actions of a few rich entitled idiots who manipulated everyone. Also there were a few minor consistency errors. I'm chalking it all up to the fact that this was the author's debut novel, the rest being novellas.

Overall, a good story that was interesting. Not a 5 star because there were a few things that didn't jive. But I'm looking forward to the next story by this author and hopefully it'll be a little more polished.

Don’t like tropes with weak girls and guys who don’t pay their debts

The problem with stories like these is that authors believe women are week, no matter what and they can never get over loss or pain or anything like that and from the very beginning when she’s in Gutters’s car and give them a smile goodbye after what he did, praying on her, worst fears, and then it just continues throughout the book. Stories like this need someone who believes in the strength of women to rewrite them and make them better.

My rating: 5/5
Hero: 4/5
Heroine: 5/5
POV: dual, although out of the 55 chapters Gunner has only like 5 chapters in it
Angst level: 4/5
Steam level: 4/5
Genre:best friend to enemies to lovers, high school bully romance
Trigger/Taboo: suicide/murder, bully to the extreme form

Andie killed her boyfriend. Or so they say. He hung himself, but nothing is what it seems. Andie gets blamed for everything although she’s the innocent in this story. All of her friends are against her & Andie & her mom need to flee the state because of all the hate threats & stares.

Things I liked:
-Andie’s new friends Hero & Ulla, they’re loyal to her & don’t care what gossip is going around about Andie
-Andie is such a strong girl. I really liked her, she didn’t let it get to her & tried to be the bigger person.

Things I didn’t like:
-It’s a dual story but we only get Andie’s side of the story, when we read something about Gunnar it’s always in the past. Why don’t we get to know what he’s thinking this whole time?
-Gunnar, man did I hate that fucker! In my opinion he really doesn’t deserve Andrea. He didn’t grovel or anything, Andie forgave him way to quickly in my opinion.

My opinion:
I didn’t expect this. I downloaded this book from Bookfunnel thinking it would be a short story but it turned out to be only this first 11 chapters. I was so intrigued with it I bought it right away. My heart broke for Andie, she’s so strong! She had to go through a lot for nothing really. I didn’t see the plot coming at all. It was so sad to discover Cole didn’t take his own life.

I’m already not a big fan of high school romances, and the characters in this one just… didn’t make any sense.

Gunnar treats Andie like dirt for 60% of this book, publicly humiliating her in every way he can think of, even making her mom turn against her a little bit. And she just… never does anything to him? Not even in a revenge kind of way, she just lets him do whatever he wants. He humiliated her in public and she let him fuck or do at least something sexual quite literally every time he showed the slightest interest. What???

She just doesn’t hold on to anger. Every time he does something horrible to her, she’s over it by the end of the chapter. Why does she keep being even cordial to this guy that literally doused her in fake blood???? What????? He Carrie’d you and then you met him ALONE without anyone knowing where you were, and when he tied you to a fence and abandoned you in the rain you… let him finger you??????? I don’t get it

And towards the end she’s all “I’m not sure I can forgive you…” and as the reader it’s like ??? Cause they’ve been having regular sex, hanging out, she jokes around with him, like she is literally treating him normally. There is no indication that she hasn’t forgiven him.

Also - NO grovel. Zero. The only “apology” I can remember is him being like “I’ll be sorry if it ends up you weren’t lying.” but hi hello yeah that’s not an apology :) There’s no big gesture that he planned, no real indication of changed behavior since he just directs his maliciousness other directions. This guy sucks.

Wow, what a captivating cross between dark bullying romance, friends to lovers and murder mystery! This book kept me up all night and I just can't believe it is Amber Faye's first full length novel. I read her two novellas previously ('Watched' and 'Break Me') and wondered if she could achieve the same quality of writing, plot and characters for a full novel. She absolutely did not disappoint.

'BPT' offers it all: drama, angst, steam and so much suspense. Every time one of my questions was answered, another one popped up, constantly keeping me on the edge of my seat. In a town with so many secrets, everyone becomes a suspect.

All the characters are very well developed and very complex, full of conflicting emotions, heartbreak, desire and jealousy, all while going through some of the hardest time in their lives. Gunner is the perfect example of that, simultaneously inspiring hate, compassion and empathy (and love of course!), torn between blaming Andie and loving her, as well as dealing with the loss of one of his best friends.

The story takes us back and forth in time during their 4 years of high school, but is not at all confusing. The past plays like memories, filling in gaps in the story and truly transporting the reader into the world of Torrent Bay Academy.

I would highly recommend this book and this author generally, and I cannot wait for the next instalment of this series to be released!

A very strong story that is well developed and with an unexpected ending.

Cole's suicide appears to have resulted from Andrea's actions making her responsible for his death. The whole town believes the lies being spread about Andie that keep her from even being welcome at Cole's funeral. But no one knows the truth of their relationship except Barkley and he asks her to keep it secret.

Andie has been gone for half a year when she returns to high school. All kinds of stories circulate about her and people try to bully her away from school. Gunnar, her former best friend, the loudest of all. No one believes her and no one believes that Cole's suicide might have been murder!
Andie will do anything to show Gunnar that she is not guilty as he believes. But can she prove her innocence if there is no perpetrator for a murder?

I think the relationships that are described and the actions of young adults at school are well used. A bully story that goes far but not too far. Andie who doesn't just let herself be bullied is portrayed as a strong young woman despite her insecurities. The retrospectives from both POV's complete the story.
The slumbering love that can be felt between Andie and Gunnar and that blossoms, beautifully constructed. The denouement that you didn't see coming was great. A happy ending with a lot of feeling

Gonna check out the second book

It's a looong winding deceiving road from the " it girl" to the town pariah with Andie.
And it's been far too long and far too hurting for Gunnar to believe all the lies told about her.
But what if the man she love him self is involve ?

First part pf the book, when Gunnar so easily point his finger to blame her, was shocking. I mean, what in the small town of ever fuging Duck was that! Just because his family is super rich, so his word rules the town?! That's sick!
Then when Andie is back to town, all those bullying is classic high school bullying stupidity followers teenage mentality.

I love when Andie meet her new bestie. The nerdy Hero and fun Ulla, their time together were suprisingly light and funny.

The mystery surrounding Cole's death, was predictable on who was starting the rumour and why. His secret that lead to his and Andie's relationship, also predictable. The villain in his death was subtly hinted but slowly unravel.

The conclusion of bullying, town stupidity for rumours, Andie and Gunnar conflict even how the Rayne's scandal, was easily told after long winding road of plot line. I felt bit of slack jaw at those moment. I mean, that's it?! 😱

The steamy scenes was so good. Love how the author take time for Gunnar and Andie to get together finally. From friend to secret love to enemy to finding their attraction are mutually lusting😂 was so good.

Overall, gonna check out the second book.

A girl is blamed for her boyfriend’s death and faces relentless bullying from her classmates, led by Gunnar, her former best friend. Convinced her boyfriend was murdered, she must unravel a web of lies to uncover the truth and clear her name.

This book was so well written, with a fast-paced, exciting plot that felt like Mean Girls meets murder mystery. The story truly captures the atmosphere of high school with a wide cast of interesting characters and social politics.

I absolutely LOVED Andie, the heroine. The bullying starts early, but she is sharp, witty and courageous and has no problem fighting back and recruiting allies. There’s also a realistic and tender side to her character as she deeply mourns her best friend/boyfriend Cole, as well as her prior friendship with Gunnar.

The author’s choice to present most of Gunnar’s POV chapters as flashbacks worked well, giving glimpses into the friendship dynamic of him, Cole and Andie before tragedy tore them apart, without slowing down the story’s pace. Meanwhile, Andie’s POV chapters focus on the present as she navigates an increasingly intense relationship with Gunnar and works to solve the mystery of Cole’s death. The author skillfully sprinkles context clues about what really happened, leading to a fantastic surprise ending. I’m excited to read more books by this author.

I loveeed this, up to 50% it was exactly my cuppa tea. Bonus points, the POV was 80% heroine's. Then it went into more of a murder mystery territory and they were just together.

I knew who the murderer was from the beginning, solely by thinking who the odd man out was. Who was the random character introduced for seemingly no purpose at all? Unless you're Agatha Christie, this is always the recipe for figuring out the murderer.
I really felt the whole secrecy was dumb af too. Because a deranged psychotic stuck-on-revenge little brother trumps a gay closet 500%. The love of your life hating you trumps a gay closet 600%. They could've been the only two people to know if the gay closet really had horrible consequences. I doubt they were worse than hers though.
Not to mention the other dude (Barkley) was selfish as fuck to let literally everyone ostracise her AT A FUNERAL, drive her away from town, bully her in school, be a target of a deranged psychotic little brother... for what?? His own selfish reasons. Would his getting kicked out of his home really be worse than what she faced?

Another thing I thought was dumb but.. hero's brother OD'd and was in a hospital fighting for his life and he doesn't cancel the Halloween party??? It's like he forgot his brother and was all about the party lol. So weird.

Broken Pretty Things is the first instalment in the new Torrent Bay Academy series by Amber Faye. It is a standalone, best friends to enemies to lovers romance. It explores a cruel world with a cruel conniving alpha hero and dark themes. The characters are all flawed in their own unique ways which the author has written in an effective way to assist in giving the storyline meaning and be able to relate it to realistic situations in some way. Although the story isn't that realistic all the time as it is a piece of fiction. It doesn't end on a cliffhanger and has a HEA.

The story revolves around Andie and Gunnar as they take a twisted journey from friends to enemies and consequently like any good romance ends in love. But their journey isn't so straight forwards as each character is faced with numerous challenges and must come to terms with their past to have a future worth living. I love a high school bully romance and this certainly didn't disappoint!

I've read a lot of books in this genre, and Broken Pretty Things stood out immediately. The writing is excellent, well planned, and attention grabbing from the first chapter. The use of flashbacks is also really well managed. What mainly caught and kept my attention, though, was just how *believable* the whole book was. Without spoiling anything, the conflict, secrets and misunderstanding between characters (teens and adults) are just... very realistic. This isn't a bully romance where a bunch of high schoolers have unrealistic amounts of tattoos, mafia levels of money, or completely absent parents- it's a story set in school where the characters actually act the age that they are. That said, I still didn't see the twist coming! There are enough turns and red herrings that I was gripped all the way to the conclusion. I'm really looking forward to reading more from this author.

Broken Pretty Things is a cross between a high school bully romance and a murder mystery. After being run out if town by her best friend following the suicide of her boyfriend, Andie is back for senior year. Bring on the bullying by her former group of friends led by her former best friend and secret crush, Gunner. The bullying was pretty intense in this one. There are many secrets and a suspenseful "who done it" plot. The chemistry between Gunner and Andie was great, though I wanted both more fight from her and more bulldozing alpha behavior from him. There’s some OW drama and a rich cast of secondary characters. Ulla was probably my favorite of the bunch and provided much needed comic relief. The mystery kept me glued to the pages and I will admit that, for once, I was surprised by the resolution. Definitely and enjoyable bully romance with a solid plot.

Holy wow and then oh my my!
I loved this book and completely devoured it! I was up until 3am reading it and picked it up the moment I woke up to finish it. This book had everything I crave in a book. Bully romance, steamy scenes...kindle melting ones...and a friends to lovers aspect. the underlying mystery in this story kept me guessing, flipping the pages as I tried to figure it out with Andie and Gunner. Gunner was the best book boyfriend...I loved him even when I hated him, and his twisted words had my heart pounding and questioning his character the entire time. And that plot twist...holy heck...I didn't see that coming and it was so perfect. The ending was tied up nicely and I'm still thinking about this book. Get it and devour it! You won't regret it.

I opened this book without reading the blurb or knowing the author. I love doing that because I have no expectations of the book. I have been reading dark romance for close to two decades now and I can say without a doubt that this book was one of the most beautiful I've ever read. It has everything you could want to keep you up until 3am... Saying just one more page, just one more. The mystery, the bullying, the angst, the desire, the intimacy, the story... It all felt so real that I am honestly going to have a book hangover for a while now because these characters just felt so real. Highly recommend this book.

Good read

It is my first read from the author. In the beginning, it is slow, and the bully is too aggressive. The bully starts with Gunner, the male character’s speech that is accusatory towards Angie. Gunner's accusatory speech causes the entire town to believe a lie resulting in Angie leaving her hometown. The plot revolves around the mysterious death of Gunner’s and Angie's best friend and boyfriend. The story also contains a background history of friendship and high school memories before their friend’s death and POV from both characters. The story and plot are pretty excellent but questionable with the facts and past events and memories. The book was enjoyable, and I will read more of the author’s book in the future.

Love Love Loved this book

I absolutely fell in love with this book. The bully aspect was written so perfectly and I could not put it down! Most bully romance books have a weird explanation as to why all the sudden the guy doesn’t hate the female mc anymore and it doesn’t make much sense. This book however exceeded all my expectations for Gunnar and Andies connection. This book made me feel every emotion the characters felt. I laughed. I cried and I probably looked a little crazy to all the people who watched me read it lol. This book I will recommend again and again and will probably end up reading over and over. Overall it was a great book and I can’t wait to see what other books Amber Faye writes!

'Broken Pretty Things' constantly switches back and forth from past and present. I did think the book could have been condensed slightly as it felt like parts of each tense was sort of drawn out. There isn't much action in terms of the mystery to who killed Cole. It doesn't really balance out all of the teenage angst and lust, just seemed like it was served on a platter towards the end. At least there was a little bit of a standoff for justice. It's the first in the series but is read as a standalone. I'm a bit more curious now to the rest of the series.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

First book by this author

I love y.a. bully romances. That being said they mostly all have the same pattern. This one was so different. It had a bit of a mystery to solve and usually I'm pretty good at predicting those as well. Although I slowly figured out the who done it part, I kept second guessing it because I couldn't figure out the why! And there is no way to figure it out. It was awesome. So awesome! Also other things in the book didn't follow the usual and the part about ppl getting away with stuff. It was really very good! I hope this author writes more bully romances. Maybe one with Hero would be great!

Oooww this slow burn was way more satisfying than a lot of other slow burn romances. It wasn't necessarily the brutality of the bullying, but the extent of the his unwillingness to see her truth, felt more intense. Thing seem to to get better and you the regular progression of romances where the couple gets togther, but the author hits with the conclusion of the real conflict of the book. The ending wraps the story up kind of quickly, but that was okay because it was thrilling and I felt satisfied after reading. There were some plot devices that seemed a bit convenient and wish the would have just explained those points better and not just save time.

I got so mad in the beginning of this book. Who [the hell] says in a funeral that a girl is to blame for someone's suicide?
Gunnar was so mean in the beginning that I almost stopped reading. Later, he grew on me because we could see that he was trying to be better, but I still think he should have groveled more.
I love that Andie was fierce and she didn't give in to Gunnar's attempts. She knew that something wasn't right and she tried to prove it. Also, she kept her friend's secret even when it didn't do her good.
To be honest I wasn't expecting the ending, and it made me love the book even more.

Gunner and Andie made quite a pair. She was no doormat by any means and he wasn't a milk-sop bully. Neither was over the top, both were "likable" as characters. The mystery had me staying up late as I just had to find out who dunnit, I guessed and I won't say if I was right or not.
The secondary characters and enough life of their own to sustain them as players in the book ( a rare occurrence) and I enjoyed them. Will read more from this author.
I received an ARC from Booksprout and it did not affect my review.
