Haaaach ....

Emma Grey's UNREQUITED: GIRL MEETS BOY BAND is a funny and fabulous YA romance with just enough fantasy to make it downright addictive. Kat Hartland is seventeen when her mum strong-arms her into taking her two twelve-year-old twin sisters to a concert - Annie and Jess are crazy fan girls who can't get enough of super-popular boy band Unrequited (and especially lead singer Angus Marsden), but Kat is horrified at the thought of sitting through two hours of music she considers totally processed and overly-merchandized. On the way to the concert, she meets a hot young medical student who ends up helping her and the twins get to the concert venue. And at the concert itself, Angus Marsden (who's pretty hot himself) actually seems to single her out during the show, as if he's really interested. Kat tells herself that she'll never see the med student again (she doesn't even know his name), and she's convinced that Angus was just doing his usual boy band thing. But she's totally wrong!

UNREQUITED is very much a Cinderella story - both Angus and the med student (whose name turns out to be Joel Isaacson) are determined to track down the girl neither of them can get out of their minds. Angus begins Tweeting about the girl in seat L26 (Kat's seat at the concert), and Joel tells his BFF Sarah that he just might have met "The One." Kat herself knows nothing about any of this . . . she thinks she's just a loner with dreams of her own music career, dreams she believes will never come true.

But Cinderella stories are all about dreams come true, aren't they? And dreams do come true here, even if they aren't necessarily the dreams we expect. Kat wishes she could see Joel again, but she has little interest in Angus (who she believes is a womanizing pop idol with little understanding of either music or real life). I wanted Kat and Joel to find each other, but I also wanted Kat to get to know Angus - who just might not be the airhead pop star she thinks he is (at one point, he compares Kat to Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennett, who was so prejudiced against Mr. Darcy that she couldn't see the man he really was). So what exactly is it that Kat really wants, and will she ever find it?

One of the best things about this novel is Kat Hartland, who is a totally believable twenty-first century teenager. She's a bit of an iconoclast (she wears vintage clothes, seldom uses make-up, and spends her free time writing music), but she's no Bella Swan (she's neither clumsy nor insecure, and in no way does she need a guy to take care of her). At the same time, she longs for romance - she's just not sure how to go about making it happen. Actually, Kat's inexperience with boys was the only aspect of her character that seemed a bit of a stretch to me - not only has she never kissed a boy before meeting Joel and Angus, but she's never even had a boy's arm around her. But what ultimately happens is actually very sweet and very poignant - and part of what makes that work is the kind of young woman Kat is (her inexperience actually makes it easier for her to respond to both Joel and Angus in a direct and open fashion that is both intriguing and endearing). I believed her totally, in spite of her inexperience.

The plot of UNREQUITED is full of delicious coincidences that make the story incredibly fast-paced. I was hooked from the first chapter! And nothing about any of it was predictable - I was never quite sure whether Kat would end up with Joel or Angus . . . or with neither of them. While this is most definitely a romance (and Kat spends a lot of time thinking about the two guys who might or might not be in her life), it's also a story about a young woman with very specific career goals of her own. She may dream of romance, but her ultimate fantasy is about being a star in her own right, singing for her own legion of fans. And that's part of what makes this novel more than just a "girl meets boy" fairy tale.

While reading UNREQUITED, I was reminded of two of my favorite films - "Singin' in the Rain" (1952) and "Notting Hill" (1999). All three, in some way, are about an average person whose life is changed by meeting someone very famous. And all three have fabulous endings - fairy tale endings with just enough reality to make them totally believable. I am decades older than Grey's target audience (I haven't been a teenager in over forty years!), and I'm no fan of romance novels. But UNREQUITED was just such a delightful read that I couldn't help getting swept up in Kat's dreams-come-true. This is a terrific novel - I totally recommend it.

My two teenaged daughters are going to LOVE this book. I read it first (buyer's prerogative) and stayed up way past my bedtime to find out how it ends. This is a great tale, told at a cracking pace but still managing to include all the essential (juicy, tantalising, unexpected) story-telling elements. The main character, Kat, is going to appeal to my jazz-singing, guitar-playing older daughter, while Angus, the lead singer of the boy band, is going to capture my One Direction-adoring, Harry Styles-obsessed younger girl's attention.

This is the first 'Young Adult' book that I have read since I was a young adult myself, and as a mother of teenaged girls it was great to see Kat with her feet on the the ground and her head screwed on pretty tight - she's a good role model.

But really, "Unrequited" is a bit of a fantasy, a bit of a fairy tale, and I'm not at all embarrassed to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed a few hours of YA escapism, not to mention reminiscing over my own slightly awkward teen obsessions (Nik Kershaw, anyone? No? Just me then?)

I can't wait for my girls to read it so we can talk about it and argue over which actor is going to play Angus Marsden in the movie, and whether they'll do open auditions for Kat.

2 and a half stars.

I knew this book would be pretty bad from the first page. It was entirely reminiscent of the fanfic I wrote when I was 15, which is pretty damn bad. But as I kept going I definitely got swept into the story because it's pretty much a dream come true, despite how impossible it is! The entire Joel storyline was ridiculous and not solved satisfactorily whatsoever. Also was about to give this three stars but the last line almost ruined the entire book.

Sebenarnya agak lucu melihat ada orang-orang seperti Angus dan Joel ini, yang baru pertama ketemu seseorang dan langsung semacam "I'll do anything for you" 😄 Sangat mungkin ada sih, paling aku aja yang nggak pernah mengalami.

Im not really a fangirl, but I used to fangirl to the boy band called “Westlife” lol. So just imagine your boy band crush picked you out of million girls in a concert and broadcast it over tweeter? hahah sounds dreamy right. This book is not really about a fangirl, its actually the opposite of fangirling. Kat hates the boy band “unrequited”, but her sisters are such fangirls and they are going to one of the bands concert in Australia. Kat was asked by her mum to her twin sisters to the concert which she totally loathed.

I didn't expect to like this book, but yeh I totally found myself fangirling lol. Its a good book, its really entertaining and made me feel like I was still in high school. Its a cinderella story’ish and its like far fetched from reality, if you think something like this would happen to you. hahaha one can wish right?

This book was seriously fun. I legitimately had a ball reading it. It was all so funny, so silly, so unbelievable, and just like what probably most teenage girls have dreamed about at some point in their life, even if just fleetingly. And to top it off, the writing was so fast and dramatic and wild, it made it all the more fun.

It’s told in multiple perspectives, odd for a contemporary, and it’s third person present tense, which is something you don’t see often. But it worked here, made the story faster, made the characters funnier.

It follows Kat, an aspiring singer/songwriter, and her wild adventure with a stranger on a train, and also one-fifth of an internationally loved British boy band. It’s very-Cinderella-story-esque, with dreams coming true left, right, and centre. There are other characters besides the two love interests and Kat, which make it a more well-rounded story. We get lots of input from other characters, and how this wild ride is affecting them as well.

All in all, it’s completely unrealistic, but, like I said, it is a fantasy many teenage girls have dreamed about, so it was very enjoyable to see the way it played out. It wasn’t perfect - sometimes the silliness got a bit out of hand. Also, there’s extreme insta-love, and a love-triangle that becomes a love-quadrangle at one point. I also was not a fan of the way Joel kept wanting to ‘protect’ Kat. Kinda gross. Also, is it actually possible to hear anything through your earphones if you’re in the audience at the show of a boy band? Like, forget about the actual music being performed on stage, wouldn’t the screaming alone drown out whatever was coming out of your earphones??

Technical problems aside, it was fun and light, and super cute. There were cheesy moments, moments that made me roll my eyes, other moments where I had to stop and think for a second of what was happening was possible, but overall, the joy of reading this book trumped everything else.

If ever you’re looking for a cute contemporary, definitely pick this up. Highly highly recommend. It’s perfect for getting out of slumps, or just chilling with, whenever you want to read something that isn’t trying to make you think. Kinda like trashy tv, but less trashy, and more fun. I was in desperate need for exactly that, and this more than delivered.

How did this even get published????? It was SOOOO bad. I didn't expect award winning literature here but I've read better online fanfics. Why do all of the boys have such insane instalove for Kat? Why was the storyline with Joel and Sarah was completely unnecessary and just filler. Kat was an insufferable main character. It was a struggle to finish reading this. I'd avoid this at all costs; there are MUCH better boy band romance novels.

I didn't hate this story, but I didn't love it either. There were quite a few things that made me eye roll. For one, everything played out way too conveniently. All the meetings, how the characters fell into each other's laps, it was all so unbelievable.
I also feel like the Sarah-Joel story was unneeded, as well as the Cassidy one. I think the story would have been stronger if it focused on Kat's and Angus' back stories and them coming together.
All the characters felt immature for me. Especially Sarah and Joel who are supposed to be medical and law students, but I I feel like their voices and actions should make them fifteen.
The writing is telling most of the time too, and jumps perspectives too much. There are a tone of cliche's as well.
But aside from all this, it's a cute read. A One Direction type fanfic read. I'm sure tweens would enjoy this.

Unrequited is, without a doubt, the absolute worst book I have ever read. The plot is very silly but I could forgive that if literally every other part of the book didn’t suck so much. I’m all for a totally unrealistic meet-cute when it’s not executed as though it’s fan fiction on Wattpad written by a 12 year old. The writing was terrible, the characters and their developments (or lack thereof) were terrible, the pacing was terrible, the storylines were terrible. Jumping back and forth between four different perspectives meant that I didn’t get the opportunity to actually care about any of the characters, and it was all so ridiculously convoluted. The age gaps made me immensely uncomfortable. I can’t believe Unrequited was published. It’s just poorly executed tropes on poorly executed tropes.

I received this book for free from Story Cartel in exchange for an honest review.

This book targets the YA readers and is a perfect story for girls within that age group. Honestly, I am 21 and fell in love with the story! Even though the situation is one that is completely unbelievable, the point of reading is to allow yourself to be drawn in to a world where the unbelievable can be believed. This book definitely accomplished that! All in all, the characters were fun and easy to relate to, the story moved along without seeming rushed and/or dragged out, and in the end, we got the happy ending we all hoped for! I recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun, lighthearted break from the real world!

Really enjoyed this book - where was it when I was a teen???
Laughed out loud at some of Kat's inner dialogue "a girl can't survive on a mega flat white alone" and "the jacket acts like a force field and repels all negativity" were 2 of my favourites.
Thanks for a great read Emma!

Khas banget. 😁

Padahal aku selalu mengingatkan diri sendiri buat nggak terlalu berekspektasi tinggi sama buku, tapi kadang memang rencana tak sesuai realita, berharap banget tema anti-fan x idol ini sesuai harapan, ternyata ya... biasa aja.

YA ini bagiku terlalu fairy tale, too good to be true😄😃 entah karena terjemahan atau memang gaya penulisannya, rasanya kurang luwes/mengalir gitu ceritanya.. Karakter2nya kurang berkesan, malah ada yang annoying (Sarah, Cassidy, Zach) but it was a fun light read tho..

This book was so sweet and really made me feel like I was the one meeting a famous pop star. Reminded me so much of when I was into One Direction when I was younger. I found it so cool to see Kat grow throughout the story and the story had the right amount of humour and romance.

The first thought running through my head after finishing this book was how simple but cute the story was. It's cute not in a melt-you-into-a-gooey-puddle way but in an aww-who-can-resist-a-dream-come-true way. I was looking for a quick and fun read with Unrequited and that's exactly what I got. I do have to warn you that the story's not very realistic so for readers who are looking for a story that's believable, you might be disappointed.

Kat’s life was basically a fairy tale come true except she doesn’t really become a princess. I thought she would in a way but she turned out to be more than that. She was undeniably talented but extremely hesitant to show it because of a past tragedy. Whenever she talked to herself, I felt her struggle. It was legitimate but saddening to see how much she doubted herself. She also talked to herself quite often and while I think it's a very normal teenage behaviour, I did find it annoying at times. By the end of the book, I'm super glad she took control of herself and was able to represent herself properly.

I truly enjoyed Angus Marsden as a love interest. Despite his young age, he was thoughtful and had Kat's best interest at heart throughout the story. Even though there was insta-love, I found it tolerable seeing as they're so young. Unrequited sounded like an awesome band :) Since I don't follow the pop culture these days, I went into this book with an open mind about the boy band ideology which definitely resulted in my benefit. So my suggestion is to put aside any bias you have regarding boy bands if you are interested in picking this book up.

I was surprised by the multiple POVs but it was very easy to discern who was speaking so I had no problems with it. Although I really didn't care much for the other characters or their stories. They felt more like a distraction to the main story. Some of the characters felt like they were just thrown in to provide more story and to set up a love rectangle.

All the events that took place happened in a very short period of time but I think it gave a very accurate portrayal of how quickly the social media platforms work in today's world. It impacts our lives even if we're unaware of it. In many different ways.

I feel like this would be a great script for a teen movie! If you're looking for a whirlwind escape from reality then I think Unrequited will do the job! It's an easy and fun read that will leave you singing the words !

One of my favourite all-time stories is the tale of Cinderella , when the guy meets the girl and when midnight strikes the girl disappears and all the guy is left with is a piece of her clothing or accessories. He does not know her name , but he knows that he has to have her and will do anything to find her. In Unrequited , Kat has to take her two younger twin sisters to the "Unrequited" Concert , so when they board the train with all the other wannabes and concert fans. Kat can't help but think she is in pure hell , that is until she sees the cute guy opposite her , if only she had the guts to talk to him and find out his name. When the train breaks down and the girls are twenty minutes from the arena, Kat sees her day getting worst when the guy from the train steps in and calls and pays for a cab for her and her sisters. At the concert, Kat would rather listen to her Ipod filled with 5 Seconds of Summer than listen to Unrequited's version of music which Kat equals to One Direction. Kat without realising captures the attention of the lead singer Angus . From that moment , the world of Social Media is about to get exciting as he searches for the identity of the girl in Seat L-26 and of course the guy from the train needs to find Kat before he loses her to the celebrity singer. Who will Kat choose when they both find her and reveal their intentions ? Can Kat live with the public eye on her all the time ? Is Kat ready to play with the big leagues when it comes to her life ?

Unrequited by Emma Grey reminded me a cross between the Cinderella Story movies ( 1-3) and Music and Lyrics starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore especially with the release of the song at the concert part. So readers, if you are wanting a nice romantic teen heartthrob Cinderella Story, then check out "Unrequited" by Emma Grey.

I have to admit, I thought I knew what this this book was going to be like and how I'd feel about it. After all, it's a novel for teenaged girls, so it's going to be a pretty generic teen romance, right? Wrong. I was surprised by how quickly I got pulled into the plot, and how much I liked (or in one case, wanted to punch) the characters. I'm a 40 something woman who has never been on either end of a tweet and didn't know until last week that 5 Seconds of Summer is an actual band. For the first few chapters I had trouble getting my head into teen culture (will you put your phone down for a second please???) but I quickly got used to that and just wanted to see how the story unfolded. When you're at work and thinking about the book you're in the middle of, that says something.

I really like Kat and the respectful way she's treated by the male characters. I read Sweet Dreams and a Sweet Valley High as a young teen, and I hope that Emma Grey writes more books like Unrequited so my girls have a good stock to draw upon when they're a bit older. A Kat Hartland series will be a much better influence on them and their self esteem than those series were for my generation. And it's Australian!!!

My favourite quote: "Becky laughs and says 'YOLO'. What is this--2009?”
I had to think about what YOLO stands for (You Only Live Once, for my fellow old people) and it made me laugh. But reading Unrequited reminded me of what I felt like when I was 14, and we all need that once in a while.

I'm giving this 4 stars for me, and five for the target audience (me minus 30 years). Now, who can I lend it to? I've got a couple of nieces who are going to love it...

PS This was a Goodreads giveaway. Thanks, Goodreads.

When reading the summary I was questionable whether it was going to be a flop or not. This is such a cute story, and because of that I had to give it an A. I am aware that this is not a remarkable, world changing novel, however it is everything you want in a YA novel. It’s a very quick read, and the author does a great job of capturing the mind of a teenage girl, and made me very reminiscent of my high school days.

First of all, the characters are written perfectly in this book, and Kat is the perfect depiction of a girl in high school. The first kiss, the confusion about her feelings, her insecurities are all depicted perfectly so that she is 100% relatable. Every relationship in the book makes sense, and goes perfectly together to create a truly page turning novel. SPOILER ALERT: the two love triangles in this book could not have been more perfect, and made sense. I also like that although the characters were younger than I am, I could easily see them as one of my peers, and they were rather versatile, which is unusual for me in most YA novels.

The story is clearly a stretch to what would actually happen in real life, but a good YA book isn’t a good YA book without some reality stretching. The author progresses the story in a natural way, without feeling too over-embellished, and stretching from what could turn out to be a series of perfectly aligned coincidences. She knows exactly when to add in a twist or development to keep your attention.

Overall, this story is perfect for a beach read. The story has some romance, but nothing steamy so it is appropriate for yonger readers as well. I highly recommend it to any teen, YA, or someone looking to re-connect with their inner teenager.

I loved. loved, loved, this book!! I'm sad that this is a stand alone book, & that there isn't going to be anymore of Kat's story because I would sure love to experience/share her journey to fame, & through Love. I had to go back & read the ending twice, & as much as I would love to read the whole book over again right away, I have commitments to other author's that I must keep first. Don't get me wrong, the ending was great, & can hold the book as a standalone, & yet, it could also continue the story. Emma has done such an awesome job writing a story based on every fangirls fantasy, or even just most teenage/young adult woman's fantasy. She depicted the struggles, the fears, the insecurities, & the growth that every young woman on the cusp of becoming an adult faces. It's been many years since I was a teenager, but I am still able to, & did emapthized w/Kat on so many levels. I laughed, I cried, I was frustrated, I even cheered. The character's in Unrequited were all believable, each one dealing w/their own struggles, & desires as well as Kat. It was so much fun to follow them on their journey's & experience not only the tense moments but, the high of each character's triumph. If you're wondering whether to buy the book or not, then let me tell you that you should definitely buy it. You won't be diappointed.... Myself, I can't wait to read the future books that Emma Grey will publish.

This book was very enjoyable, even for an old girl like me. I work in a high school library, and this book looked like something the kids here might enjoy. I read it first, and even though I am a long way from when I was a 'fangirl' (think Beatles, Rolling Stones era...)I found the idea of teenagers meeting and performing with their idols quite exciting. The characters were believable, and positive role-models. No sex, no drugs, and a little bit of Rock 'n Roll. A light easy read, and a happy ending!
I have since had students borrow the book and I asked their opinion -The results:- 'fantastic', "I loved it', and 'Oh my God!'
