662 - Days since the dead rose up 413 - Days since I've spoken to another living human 4 - Men who have climbed my fence looking for safety 1 - Last chance for Love
Kelsey survived the start of the apocalypse and thrived in the new world with help from her friends but now they're gone. Alone for over a year and mentally broken with high anxiety, she pushes through every day trying to find the will to keep going. Until three sweet, sexy men and one hot a**hole climbs her fence looking for sanctuary.
Linc, Oliver, Grayson and Devin have been on the run from the dead and are at the end of their rope when a horde chases them straight into Kelsey's fences. When she lets them in they feel like they've hit the apocalypse jackpot with all the food, shelter and security they could want. It isn't long before they all realize that Kelsey's the real prize. They just have to convince her she doesn't have to choose. She can have them all. Kelsey needs to decide if she wants to keep dying a little bit day by day or if she can grab on to what these sexy men offer her and maybe find love. Also, zombies make a few cameos.
Reese Rivers is a RH romance author who lives in Alberta, Canada. She is addicted to coffee, inappropriate memes, dark humor and happy ever afters. Her happiest place on earth is at her camper in the forest where like Snow White, she attracts all the critters - mosquitoes instead of birds and skunks instead of bunnies. She would live there full time if not for the Canadian deepfreeze that is winter. Her latest RH novel, Burn Butterfly Burn was the #1 Book in Australia and #2 in the USA and Canada
*3.5* It’s been 662 days since the dead rose up to destroy the world as I knew it and 413 days since I last spoke to another living person.
A decent RH, post apocalyptic zombie story. Everyone falls in love in under two weeks, so that was a little silly. Has that YA feel to it, but with sex.
“I know this is fast, all of it, all of us - but in one short week, hell, in one day, you captured me, us. Your strength, kindness, your beauty, your adorable quirkiness. God, you’re the total package, Kelsey.
I’m too old and cynical for this 😂
Annoyances:
Lacking genuine intimacy between them, lots of telling rather than showing.
She’s a bad ass, the guys are morons trying to protect her.
The men had a previous HR, but that woman was mean, and wanted them to fight over her, and they never loved her, it was just about sex…blah blah
Heroine is not like the other girls cuz she knows about medicine, agriculture, raises chicken, has everything for survival, parties in the middle of the apocalypse, the hottest women pre and post apocalypse, the kindest person on earth.....she is fucking super women in the middle of zombie apocalypse and 4 boyfriends who fall for her instantly.
Ok i mean the whole reverse harem during zombie apocalypse is the most unrealistic thing and i was here for it but, BUT the whole insta love and heroine is not like the other girls just ruined it for me. She was basically superwomen and it felt like the guys wanted her cuz she had everything they need for surviving.
Reverse harem during the zombie apocalypse with a massive female lead halo? Check.
In a nutshell, I'd say this book is fun. It's not to be taken seriously and rather lacking on the plot part but for someone who enjoys apocalypse-themed novels, likable Mary Sue heroine and big plot armor, it works.
It's my second book by this author and I read both in a row. While both subjects are very different, the novels are both rather similar; insta-love, hot sex scenes, some inconsistencies, and a handful of plotholes. My biggest issue was the non-existent talk of birth control until the very last chapter, but I suppose having kids in the middle of zombies it's every girl's dream.
Kelsey, the heroine, is a lovely character. She has everything for her to be the perfect RH heroine: damaged, awkward, walking wet dream, kind, funny, with a plethora of incredibly useful skills, and tons of wax at her disposal to have perfectly smooth legs for her boys. I like the psycho part of her the most and I wish she had partied with her hens more than once.
The guys are also the basic RH stereotypes: damaged, overprotective, ready to share, with no hygiene issues despite the apocalypse, and mouth-watering abs. One is angry, one is gentle, one is a dom, one is the leader. They fell in love in short 48 hours with Kelsey and go cavemen on her like all heroes with some respect.
But see, it works. It's a nice, entertaining read and a standalone. The page count is too small to have any sort of plot but we follow those guys going around in the apocalypse paradise Kelsey and her late friends built, while they fuck like bunnies. They have hot water, cellphones, power, cheese, bacon, and a game room, enough crops to feed an army, too many solar panels for just the five of them, and about everything I wish I had had during the pandemic. Where can I sign up for the next zombie apocalypse? Don't tell my husband but I would enjoy the fuck out of a solitary life with all the stuff needed to fight boredom.
> No MM > No FF > Four guys > Multiple POVs > Who falls first?
Trigger warning: Zombies (obviously), depression and suicidal thoughts, and an ugly backstory from one of the guys.
This was so cringey and terrible, but I couldn’t stop reading because I loved the idea of a reverse harem romance set during the zombie apocalypse 😭😭😭
The writing was straight up bad. It felt like a 16 year old fic writer who’s still in her “not like other girls” phase from 2006. The dialogue is cringey, the scenes are wooden and clunky, and I lost count of how many times I rolled my eyes.
The heroine is a dumbass whose only personality trait is running to the kitchen and jarring vegetables when she gets flustered. What even?! The heroes fall for her instantly and revere her as superwoman, though she has not a crumb of chemistry with any of them.
The guys aren’t much better; their only personality traits are Leader, Nice Man, ????, and Grumpy. I couldn’t tell you what a single one of them looks like, beyond Devin who is the typical dark-hair-and-ice-blue-eyes-brooding-bad-boy. They’re so impossibly bland that I could cry. The steamy scenes were fine, but there weren’t enough to compensate for how dull and long this book was.
The romance was lacking and so too were the zombies. Kelsey’s compound is the epitome in convenience: she has everything at her disposal from solar panels to video games, fields of vegetables, dehydrators and canning machines, along with a gun turret and fireworks to lure zombies away. She’s never wanting for anything, and the couple of encounters we get with zombies are conveniently handled in a flash. Sure, I don’t want to be too stressed during a romance, but I never felt that there were *any* stakes on the line here. Give me at least one quest or near miss where I think someone’s gonna die!
1 star. This had potential but was just so, so, so bad. 😭 I read better stories on Quizilla when I was 16.
Ms. Rivers just wow'd me with how much I enjoyed Dying to Love. I hadn't seen this book anywhere and then it was listed as a suggestion so I picked it up because I love trying new authors and wow. I'm so impressed with what I think is a debut RH.
This standalone has such a nice blend of humor, feelings, action, tension, and steam. I'd be laughing one minute and tearing up the next and fanning myself the next. Each of the main characters is relatable in their own way and each has their own unique personality and quirks. These characters are also surviving a major trauma in addition to some having some past traumas, so there's also healing that needs to happen. I loved how awesome, kind, and protective these guys were (one guy pokes and riles the FMC up but I didn't think of him as mean). The FMC is hilarious, but also vulnerable and compassionate, while still being able to kick ass when needed.
The focus of this book is the characters and their safety/survival, but not in a constant state of worry/terror kind of way. There's also no OW drama and even the zombies play a smaller overall part. The last chapter is a peek a little bit further into the future and left me with a huge smile on my face. I'm so excited to see what this author writes in the future, especially if her future characters are as wonderful as these. This was exactly what I needed to read right now.
this book is like if someone asked me what my dream scenario would be in a zombie apocalypse........and i'm not even talking about the four men being in love with you. i'm talking about the survival base.
the fmc's base in this book is like what i would daydream if there were a zombie apocalypse. electricity? cozy trailer home? crazy amount of food - including all kinds of CHEESES?! A GAME ROOM?!
one of em even had the time AND the ingredients to make japanese gyoza ✨FROM SCRATCH✨
not me staring at my kindle on that particular page thinking that these people actually live better than me because i currently cannot just go into my kitchen and have all the ingredients ready to make gyoza and im not the one living in the middle of the dead 🤨
this is a post apocalyptic reverse harem romance. the fmc is a very badass and very skillful survivor living alone in this very impressive base - until these hot men climb her fences.
because, of course. would not be a zombie apocalypse if a group of very attractive men does not climb your base's fences.
interesting premise. i extremely enjoyed the first 30% of the book - it was funny and engaging. i just kind of lost interest a little bit because of the insta lust and insta love. this is a pretty short book so i get that there's not a lot of time to slow build anything but still... maybe do a bigger time jump?
however, i'm surprised that i actually didn't hate this as much as i expected considering i loathe insta love, i think the zombie apocalypse aspect of the book really helped.
idk i just enjoyed reading about them trying to survive i guess and there was no anxiety over it bc this is not that kind of survival book so it ended up being a good time!
also i hope this is not oversharing i just see a lot of rec questions with this prompt... this book would be perfect to read on your period lol
the mmcs DOTE on the fmc hard and in a way that i actually kind of like. one of the mmcs know when the fmc is on the verge of a break down just by her body language and he would instantly distract her or get her to talk about something else that she's interested in - i think that's kinda sweet.
the fmc has been by herself for a long time so she's been doing everything herself around the base & has a hard time adjusting to the guys helping but the guys are like "we're not going anywhere, let us help you" and it's a nice daydream where a woman who's been doing everything by herself finally gets a damn break & gets looked after for once - but it's RH so she gets to get looked after by ✨four hot men✨ who all want to bang her instead.
but dw, this has your classic RH trope where one of the men is kind of an ass so you get to have a little tension and banter and bickering!
anyways, great fun, short and sweet, but i think it would've been waaaaay better if there wasn't insta love.
my favorite part of the book is the story with the fmc's best friends though. i teared up a little at the ending because im afraid storylines like that will ALWAYS get me lol
This was hella entertaining and the perfect book to keep my attention while lying in bed sick!! I love myself some apocalypse books, and RH is always my guilty pleasure. Good fun.
I was so hyped when I saw this book contained zombies and was also a reverse harem. The book features a whacky heroine who was literally one step from going crazy before her future harem find themselves on her sanctuary. I loved that we got to see the mental struggles of the heroine (Kelsey), particularly since she’s been alone for so long and simply living on grieving and surviving.
The one thing I was expecting more of was zombies though. Guess I’m so used to being negative Nancy when reading apocalypse books since I kept expecting Kelsey’s place to be overrun by either other humans or zombies. Things just seem to good to be true at her place and honestly I’d like to stumble upon a place like hers should shit ever hit the fan. There are some zombie scenes and a mini battle or two but really the books main focus is on the relationship and mental health of the heroine.
At one time the heroine was not alone and it’s been quite some time since she’s even heard someone living say her name so suffice it to say she was nothing but eager to see the guys show up. Luckily for her they are genuine men who’ve been barely scraping by on the ‘outside’ and as eager to please her as they are to have a day to day purpose at her suped up home without being on the run for their lives. Personally the book was too short for me to differentiate between the four men sadly. It was nice to see how patient they were with the heroine as well as understanding of her thoughts and behaviors so I do wish I was able to get more of an individual sense of each of them.
Per my usual I wish there was a longer or more drawn out epilogue. I’m happy with the HEA the book has but I do wish we got to at least see the characters in the future because they live in a very dangerous world. Overall I have no complaints and really enjoyed the book. There were tons of funny moments and lots of bonding/romance and of course sexy times. The book is certainly something I’d love to see expanded upon as there’s so much possibility left to be explored.
Judge all you want, but I love RH They are my palette cleanser books the ones I always turn to after a hard read they can be extremely enjoyable, especially when it's done right and Reese Rivers knows how to deliver good Why-Choose romances not only that, but she delivers each book with a different setting or theme this time, it's a Zombie apocalypse
so imagine a woman who was living by herself for over 400 days, fighting zombies and tending to her safe haven suddenly, four, not only handsome but kind, men literally fall into her backyard
now you'd expect the spice to hit immediately but not with Reese, and that's what I love about her books she knows that sex and smut should come from intimacy and intimacy comes after trust
I loved how each character had a background story and something to bring to the table. Not just there to be there
I wish it was longer. I felt that the themes tackled here deserved more but still, this was a very good quick and enjoyable read
This book started out strong, and I got really invested, and then about 50% through it really got cheesy. Insta love is not for me. Liked the zombie end of the world aspect. Wish there had been more of the zombies.
An apocalypse RH romance without any of the struggles on an apocalypse: they have cell phones, practically unlimited food, IV bags, hot showers, video games, a gym, and cheese. It felt boring.

For a zombie apocalypse why choose romance, this wasn’t half bad 🤣 I think I would have liked for things to be a little bit higher stakes when it came to the whole undead business, but otherwise this was fluffy, high steam, and enjoyable.
Only at 4% but already giving up on this story. What I‘m currently reading is not at all what I was promised. I thought I’d get the thrill and heartbreak of living through the apocalypse, paired with the resignation of having to fight this war alone because everyone you loved has died. Instead the story literally starts off with a self-description that would make a 16-year-old Wattpad author proud and then continues with misogyny of „how dare a woman have hair on her legs????“ because apparently even the fucking apocalypse is not enough of an excuse to not force women to shave their natural body hair. And do not forget that the rest of the 4% is the female lead putting on MAKEUP and a silver SEQUINS DRESS because again, she has to feel like a girl (which you obviously can‘t if you‘re not dressed prettily and have no makeup on) because when she inevitably meets the romantic interests then she‘ll be pretty because men would never love an unshaved, makeup free woman monster dressed in pants.
Oh and it is also funny how the author does not trust her writing to convey her mental image of what the trailer is supposed to look like and we get a PHOTO…. Truly giving Wattpad vibes.
I‘ll come back when I have fought through the apocalypse that is this novel.
edit: it didn‘t really get better
Edit 2: thank you for liking my review and bringing me back. In hindsight I believe I was too lenient. Looking back on the fact that I payed real-life money for this novel I can only say nah, this book truly only deserves one star. Sorry.
I don't know what I was expecting, more zombie killing, end of days stuff maybe? But this story ended up being almost fluffy for a zombie apocalypse book.
The story starts with our FMC who's already set up in a post-apocalyptic camp that has everything you could ever need, all the farming, fence building, solar panel laying, raiding, and stockpiling has already been done. The camp has everything, except people. The FMC had a group of friends who helped her build the perfect camp but they're all gone (no clue what happened to most of them and don't expect to learn that mystery).
She's all by herself until a group of guys show up at her fence and she has to learn to trust and let people in again. Both she and her men learn to love in this zombie apocalypse. There's still some adventure to be had while protecting their home base, but nothing too crazy.
It's a good easy read if you want something with less drama, but that also has a good plot to keep you interested.
It was a cute, light read. Kind of lame sometimes, but honestly, I don’t have anything bad to say about it. It was light and fun with very minimal action but in a good way. It’s an easy book to pick up and read when you don’t know what to read next.
It is 4 star worthy? Probably not, but who cares. It was enjoyable, so for that alone, it deserves it.
I love it whenever I read a new author and they surprise me. I wasn't expecting this to make me cry though. Excellent read. I'll definitely be reading future works by this author.
A fun reverse harem, zombie apocalysm romance with a little spice.
I enjoyed this book. The plot wasnt super deep, but sometimes a fun light read with good characters is just what you need. I think how Reese Rivers wrote the FMC was perfect. It makes sense. I loved her strength and humor. The men had diverse personalities as well, and they also had their own trauma.
It is a beautiful book about survival, healing and love.
Damn, that was a ride. Not a fan of zombies, but they were pretty minimal and it was like there was only the five of them in the world. Kel’s and Dev’s confessions made me choke up. A little humour, a lot of comfort and a lot of sex. I liked how the guys were called out on the damsel in distress stuff. Kel’s was taught well. Nice and well rounded, pretty typical ending. It’s a shame about the original group, they sounded awesome. Couldn’t put it down.

This was exactly the book I needed without even realizing it. It was my first time reading a Reese Rivers book, and it was an absolute delight. The writing is simple yet descriptive enough to immerse me in the story. The characters truly captivated me—Kelsey, the FMC, is just the kind of badass heroine I love, and the men were just as compelling (Linc, Devin, Oliver and Grayson 💕) The apocalyptic setting added an interesting layer without overshadowing the story and while the plot wasn’t overly complex, it didn’t feel empty or dull—it struck the perfect balance.
This is an excellent book for relaxing and enjoying a good story without being overwhelmed by intense emotions or anxieties. I loved it for exactly that reason!
Dying to Love: 1.5 ★ | DNF | Easy to follow writing style | Hard to connect characters | Underdeveloped plot | Intriguing premise | Frustrating reading experience
I loved the FMC, she’s silly and funny. But I didn’t see the potential for it to go anywhere satisfying. Which is a shame, because it’s so rare to find a reverse harem set in a post apocalyptic world.
Awesome... This book was funny, entertaining and sweet despite the zombies LOL 😂 very likeable characters with great character development. Kept me laughing. Got me in the feels too all in all a sweet book about love in times of despair 💗 plus a good few spicy 🥵🔥 scenes
Hooked from the start! Not your typical post apocalyptic novel! While it does take place during a “zombie apocalypse” zombies only make a small cameo! No blood and guts! It’s an rh novel- 4 hot dudes and 1 hilarious and kickass fmc! It’s a HEA that had me reading into the wee hours of the morning! Very good read!
This is completely over the top, insta love, convenient zombie apocalypse perfect shelter, filth, filth and some more filth but I really enjoyed it! I want to marry Dev and strip off my clothes for Greyson 😂🥵
DNF @ 43% Zombie Apocalypse meets Dora the Explorer. Hey everyone, look! It’s Mary Sue, our perfect FMC with perfect hair, a perfect face, and of course, a perfectly kind heart 💚🥺 But for short, you can call her Kelsey ✨ Be careful with the spelling, okay? Because Kelsey isn’t like other girls. She’s DIFFERENT! Even when the world ends, she smells nice, looks pretty, and remains absolutely gorgeous—all thanks to the cosmetics and hair products in her perfect little camper. Naturally, because Kelsey is an ✨ angel ✨, she decides to help five boys who just happen to climb over her fence looking for protection. Because it’s B O Y S, alright? 🤤 And it doesn’t even matter that one of them was previously mean to her. Kelsey is a total badass 🗡️ Knife? Gun? Bring it on! They wouldn’t dare rob her. I mean, why would they, right? ☺️ Handsome guys = good guys. Also, the second they see her, they all fall in love with Kelsey. Yay! 😍 Who needs chemistry when you can just get eaten by a zombie who’s probably there as a glorified prop for worldbuilding, hmm? 😌 Who cares about character development when Kelsey looks like a whole snack, can cook, grow plants, stitch wounds, and probably collect Dragon Balls too if she weren’t so busy drooling over strangers 🥰 Honestly? Fuck Kelsey. 🙂 I couldn’t connect with Goddess Kelsey and her divine perfection. This girl literally has no flaws, except for her bland personality. There’s independent, and then there’s too-perfect-it’s-laughable. Making your character good at everything just makes them boring. Also, I struggled to believe how this fluffy-hearted queen survived two whole years in a zombie apocalypse. One minute she’s throwing knives like a trained assassin, the next she’s sobbing because one of her boys didn’t pass her little emotional test, omg 🥺 You’d think someone who’d lived through hell would be a little tougher. But I guess Kelsey just blows kisses at zombies and they vanish. That’s why her delicate heart can’t handle actual violence. The worldbuilding also had me confused as hell. Like … did the author ever watch The Walking Dead, the 28 Days Later franchise, Dawn of the Dead, or literally ANY zombie media? I’m not saying every author has to binge TWD (honestly, I dropped it after they killed my booboo Glenn 😭), but a little research never hurt anyone??? Kelsey’s camper feels less like an apocalypse shelter and more like a three-star hotel. This girl has everything: food (they cooked a fucking spaghetti with cheese!!), electricity, even a working phone. Are you seriously telling me that Kelsey and her four besties could build and maintain all this when Rick and his entire squad couldn’t even sleep three nights straight without Walkers or other groups breathing down their necks? Really? Sure, maybe that’s unfair. The book clearly focuses more on romance than realism. But last I checked, romance doesn’t mean “unbelievable setup". It’s supposed to be dystopia, not homeless dreamland with a spa. And the cherry on top? The boys were boring. Standard RH fare; the good guy, the asshole, the quiet one, and the “ooooh, he’s so mysterious" type. And surprise! They immediately become obsessed with Kelsey. STOP. This is not what I meant when I said I didn’t want bullying in my harem reads. Insta-love/lust just doesn’t work here. It felt like they fell for her simply because she was the only woman they’d seen in ages and happened to live in a little utopia. No. Just no. I couldn’t bring myself to suffer through the remaining 57%. Dying to Love? More like dying readers.
Kelsey hasn't had a good time since the dead started walking. Part of a very small group, they did everything right...until everything went wrong. Now the last one possibly alive, it's been a year since she's seen anyone, she's contemplating the end. And then the fence sensors go off and she finds 5 guys laying inside the perimeter.
Spoilers ahead. I know that eventually they're going to come across other survivors. They've also got a really good system set up- if she lets some of those eggs hatch, enough for more eggs and for meat. But, ending this with a pregnancy seems wrong. What kind of world is she bringing this child into? The compound can only expand so much with this design. New fence lines and sensors will have to be cobbled together, and hordes will be attracted to the increased noise levels. I did like that the original group were geeks at heart and had a zombie plan. The zombie herding ideas were brilliant. The hen party was hysterical and adorable. Many of us do tend to sing to our chickens, and mine were named after the Golden Girls lol. Kelsey was close to a Mary Sue but not because she was perfect, but because she had to learn and adapt to this new world. And then to do it all alone. I think if we had witnessed the transition, even in a prologue, it would have left less of that impression on other readers. Show us the stressed med student learning about farming, fence sensors, canning, solar panels, and shooting. Those struggles make her more relatable. The guys are little too easy to blend together. Linc is the leader and Dev is the standoffish jerk, but Oliver and Greyson sort of blend until sexy time scenes. But, the thing that gets me most is, the ones who set this all up, they died without any real closure. Never spotted a zombie that looked like them, never found shredded clothes, a tent, their weapons, nothing to let her know for sure they were gone. And then the guys just wander in and reap all the benefits already established. The one was at least an IT genius so they can maintain and boost that area. They're also willing to farm and defend. But mostly they're just sliding into something established, that she maintained, and then the rest of the world disappeared. It's just interactions, no searches for other survivors. They could have set them up at the other location she mentioned until they were vetted to come to the campsite. It's like she holed up, the guys came to her, and then nothing else mattered. Which, I guess, is why her being pregnant bothers me so much. What a lonely future that child will have. There are a lot of great ideas in this book. The emotional pull, the camp set up, the herding, the rules. But some misses, too. Like everything starts off perfect, without those hardships, no finding their feet moments- except in relationships. There's room for expansion, a series starter. I'd be curious to see if they come across others, explore ideas of increasing the campsite, or creating a safe travel zone between the alternate and their home. I'm enjoying the new ideas and writing styles, though. New concepts on established tropes.
Kelsey had been alone for more than a year following the loss of her friends after the dead rose up. She's depressed with suicidal thoughts when she decides to clean up her home and have herself a hen party to lift her flagging spirits. In the middle of twerking in the chicken pen (yes really), her alarms go off and she finds five men at her fence with a horde of zombies trailing after them. Despite the real risk of them turning out to be rapey, abusive bastards, she decides to help them. They all struggle to relate to each other in a world gone to shit.
Can't believe how much I enjoyed this story. What I liked most was that I had no favorites this time around. I genuinely liked everyone. I've seen reviews call Kelsey a Mary-Sue but I think that's because we don't often read about FMCs who aren't hot messes that make TSTL choices and require strong men to rescue them. Kelsey wasn't like that, she was capable. Damaged, awkward, crazy (she talks to the ghost of her bf) but she's capable. She worked alongside her friends (who were bloody brilliant, btw) to set up their dreamlike compound and she followed their rules and advice even after they were gone. Wish we could've known what happened to them. I loved each other the guys and loved the way they stuck together and brought different things to the relationship. They weren't above admitting when they screwed up and that Kelsey could protect herself. There were a few plot holes but I honestly don't care since they didn't hurt the story and I was entertained.
