Maybe he could have been an artist, if it weren't for the fact that the dead can possess him and communicate through his drawings. He's spent his life avoiding idleness with pencil and paper. The sensation of possession is rarely pleasant.
But the spirits are persistent, and if they can't get him while he draws, they'll invade his dreams instead.

Again, 3.5 rounded up for creativity, emotion, and, in this case, a thrilling, fraught climax. I'm an aficionado of happy-ending paranormal and ghostly stories, and it added a brilliant element to Greg's dedication to justice for the victims, as well as giving him some too-plausible fears.

The romantic relationship builds tenderly, and I also liked the OC development among those few Mycroft trusts, whom Greg feels comfortable with.

The narrative voice did get just a little hokey in a few spots, and there were also a few bits where an explanation was repeated too nearly as if told for the first time (e.g., the Orpheus myth motif) — possibly an artifact of the story having originally been posted serially, chapter by chapter? I also saw a few things coming .

Nonetheless, by the lovely end, my feeling was far too positive to round down, and I don't want to give the impression that there were no twists along the way as to who was and wasn't involved and/or what happened that surprised me and made me go Oooh, because that would be an absolute lie.

Oh, also, there's a bonus post containing "Four scenes [that] were deleted from The Ghost in the Graphite in the interest of pacing": https://archiveofourown.org/works/307...

Reread note 9/2023: The author had been considering pro-publishing a "serial numbers filed off" version, and therefore hid the story on AO3, but decided not to, and rereleased it ... which generated a notification as a new post, and even once I realized it was actually something I'd already read, I couldn't resist diving in again.

Looking at my comments from my first reading, I'd call them a bit overly critical; this time my verdict is an easy 4★. Maybe it was the relaxation and goodwill of knowing I'd liked how it all came out, even if I didn't remember every detail — sometimes a reread can better, for all we tend to wish there were a way to "read something again for the first time."

Btw, apparently that edited-for-publication version is complete, and may itself be posted sometime. I'd definitely give it a read.
