The king is dying. Krome has been the leader of the Crow Blooded for years, but his reign is over if he can’t find a way to heal his wings after a war with the Bane brothers. He’s stuck in the in-between, not quite a crow, not quite a man, and unable to choose a form. When his crows break the rules and abduct a human woman they swear can fix him, he thinks they’ve lost their minds. She’s smart and beautiful, and she has his attention in an unsettling way. Her secrets for wanting to help him might just annihilate his defenses altogether, and on the verge of war, he can’t afford to go soft. The woman who is saving him could also be the broken king’s undoing.
Cora Peterson is just a regular girl working a unique job. She’s drawn to birds, and crows in particular because of her long history with them. On the day she discovers crow shifters exist, there is no time for shock. The man she’s thrown in with is dying, and she’s the only one who can help. And his Crow Blooded people have made her a promise. If Krome lives, she lives, too. What starts as a project for survival turns personal when Krome shows her surprising respect and care. All of the pieces of her past seem to be coming together, but there is danger in bonding to a man at the top of the food chain. If she lets him slip, she becomes the target in a war that the humans don’t even know about…and eventually, she will have to choose between his life, or hers.
The Oath of Bane was just the beginning. It’s the crows’ war now.

T.S. Joyce is devoted to bringing hot shifter romances to readers. Hungry alpha males are her calling card, and the wilder the men, the more she'll make them pour their hearts out. She werebear swears there'll be no swooning heroines in her books. It takes tough-as-nails women to handle the shifters of Bear Valley.
She lives in a tiny town, outside of a tiny city, and devotes her life to writing big stories. Foodie, bear whisperer, ninja, thief of tiny bottles of awesome smelling hotel shampoo, nap connoisseur, movie fanatic, and zombie slayer, and most of this bio is true.
Bear Shifters? Check Smoldering Alpha Hotness? Double Check Sexy Scenes? Fasten up your girdles, ladies and gents, it's gonna to be a wild ride.
He certainly has a different outlook now that he is with Cora. All of these women are strong and these men through the series definitely deserve them. At least they are teaching them how to get along with each other now that there is a truce. Krome lost his whole Murder except one.
How it is, is the next book in the Oath of Bane series and features our very own “muderdery” crow, Krome❣️Krome is injured by Moore, a Grizzly, when they go to war at the end of book three…but now his Crows are concerned as he doesn’t appear to be getting better, so they abduct a human woman who helps birds to heal😁
Cora has no idea that shifters exist, but when she’s kidnapped to help Krome, she realises there is more to him than being the King of his murder of Crows and she can’t help falling for him❤️ Awesome read and I can’t wait to read Bron next🤩
I really wasn't sure about this one as it started out. I felt bad for Cora and was ready to think the worst of the crows from their behavior in the past books. While I wasn't sure about the rest of the Murder, Krome quickly won me over with how kind he was to Cora and how he got to know her. I did find the drama at the end interesting, didn't expect Krome to be fighting who he did, nor who he went to for protection. I liked the outcome and look forward to seeing what Krome builds.
Y'all know how much I love T.S. Joyce, so it pains me to have to say I didn't love this. And maybe it was the anticipation, maybe I expected too much? Lord knows, I love a bad boy, and Krome is definitely a bad boy. I didn't care for the insta-love on Cora's part, nor the easy "acceptance" by Krome of their bond. I felt like there should have been more angst, more fighting the good fight to get to that HEA. 3 stars
This one is a bit more serious, a bit more Murdery (see what I did there?). The whole Crow thing gets explained but honestly- it feels a little weak. If the Father hadn't attacked the Banes, would they all have lived? The Crows don't see that that was a wrong choice. They just want all the bears dead.
Its unique, I will give TS that, this is the first shifter story I have read where if they kill humans they become man-eaters and out of control- more animal than human. Krome is a cool name for the Crow King, and his physical description is super cool as well as his line of work. Its all super cool.
His love interest, excuse me, Mate has a history with birds and is a Vet specializing in avians. So you see, it was fate :)
They turn to the bears as the Murder stages a coup and you know not killing their enemies will come back to bite them! Love scenes were a little blurred but adequate.
I really liked Cora - she was very interesting with her avian background. While I grew to understand and like Krome, I’m still not sold on the crows yet. Time will tell - moving on to Bron’s book next.
When Krome initiated the battle with the Bane brothers who are bear shifters, he had no idea how much his life would change. His broken wings mean the crow shifter cannot fly, thus there is no way that he can remain king over anyone belonging to the Crow Blooded. Those who serve Krome make the decision to save him despite his extreme wishes, and their kidnapping a human woman will hopefully result in the once powerful shifter surviving. Cora Peterson enjoys helping birds at her clinic, but being taken because of her expertise in aiding these creatures is beyond anything she could have ever imagined, especially when the reason is to mend someone who looks like a man yet also has the features of a crow. Once Cora meets and talks with Krome, she realizes the being with terribly broken wings may not be human like her, but she feels compelled to save him if at all possible because of a bond had in her past.
Original ideas make the latest installment in the Oath of Bane series once again enthralling by capturing my every thought while reading HOW IT IS. When Krome was met in the earlier releases centered around bear shifters, he seemed bitter and vindictive. But as I came to know more about him in his own book, I came to understand there was much more to him than previously thought. He is definitely still a commanding ruler, yet there is a side to him that I was surprised to learn about, and discovering these facts made me come to truly care about this complicated individual. Cora is also someone whose life has not been normal at all times, and I came to really like this woman with a fiercely protective nature. What takes place once she and Krome start interacting is beautifully told with realistic responses and plenty of earnest emotions. When I first read how this crow shifter was to be the hero of the next book in the series, I wondered how T. S. Joyce would redeem him after some of his prior actions, but this talented author knew exactly how to pull this off and create an outstanding romance which I will long remember.
This Series Just Keeps Getting Better and Better!!!
After reading and loving Moore’s story in T.S Joyce’s “Oath of Bane” series I didn’t think it could get much better, but man-on-man was I wrong! Where the bear brothers are angst filled and struggling the Crow Blooded are vengeful and violent. Where Aux, Brick, and Moore are emotionally lost and fighting to find the right path, the Crows are angry and defiantly trying to force the prophecy into fruition by any means necessary. And where, at first glance, you might think this is a classic battle between right and wrong, good and evil, old world versus modern society, you would be just plain wrong as this story is so much more…
As I mentioned in my earlier reviews of this series, Joyce has been a much, much needed bright spot for me this year. The last fourteen months have been nothing short of a never ending emotional rollercoaster, and while things appear to be slowly returning to something akin to “normal” (although I fear nothing will ever be truly normal again), the Oath of Bane series has thankfully given me a proper punch in the soul and given me a much needed cerebral diversion to the daily bombardment of plague world this, and political crap world that. Additionally, The Oath of Bane is honestly one of the best shifter sagas I have read over the last three years and I cannot wait for it to continue! Each one has been better than the last and this forth installment of the series is certainly no exception as Krome’s story is the most eye opening, pivotal, suspenseful, and heartbreaking tale yet!
Here with, “How It Is” Joyce once again plunges you back deep into the prophecy to end the bear shifters line with a much needed glimpse at the other side of this extraordinary equation, the crow shifters. Beginning immediately where Moore’s story ended, with Krome seriously injured and possibly dying, we are pushed unwillingly into the plots of those around Krome who devise a plan to either save or exterminate their king and fulfill the larger mission of ending the bears. It is a sinister plan that sees Krome’s second in command defy the very rules of their existence and steal a human, Cora, an aviary surgeon, who they force to help Krome. From this action Joyce takes us step by painful step through the journey of why the crows hate the bears so viscerally, how their entire state of being has been molded to exist only for the fulfillment of the pact to end the bears, and the violent consequences when some start to question blindly following the edicts of generations before them without truly understanding why or acknowledging that the sins of the parents, grandparents, and generations before them, are not and should not be the sins of the children.
It is an extraordinary tale, one that will have you contemplating your own family biases and questioning why you believe them to be so. It is a violently poignant tale that will tear at your soul and make your heart ache deeply for Krome and the bear brothers. And just like the first three, Krome and Cora’s story, from their forced beginning, through their shared journey of discover, will leave you begging for more. Theirs is an explosive connection, and through this connection spawns even more powerful threads of understanding, all weaving themselves into a story world that unapologetically delves into the binds of generational actions, how the prejudices of our elders poison the generations yet to be born, and how these lies ultimately taint the adults the children after them become, as well as, the actions and connections needed to break the cycle of pain and narrow-mindedness. And how true, unadulterated love truly can conquer all. It is a surprisingly affecting story, one that will hold your attention prisoner from start to finish.
Never before have I been so thoroughly invested in a set of characters. I am almost rabid with the need for the next book, the next set of perspectives, the next glimpse of how and why this oath strangled universe came to be and how the beings of the present with the help of their women, are changing the face of all they are and will be. What a stunning and unparalleled level of development and emotional depth Joyce brings to her characters, and to this hauntingly beautiful story world overall. I simply cannot wait for book five!!!
Krome, the King of the Crow Blooded has been in a war with the Bane brothers Moore Bane (HOW IT’S MEANT TO BE), Auxor (HOW IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE) and Brick (HOW IT HAS TO BE) for years. They're triplets who were taught to fear their lineage, after their parents deaths, they make a path to let their legacy die with them. But they all found their mates and became stronger than him and his people. They also had one of his own living with them, a little crow named Tucker.
He went up against them and lost more than he expected. Now he was stuck between being a man and a Crow yet he was neither. And his people were trying to find a way to fix him. In they minds they thought they found the solution so they kidnapped a woman with a secret.
Cora Peterson, a human woman working at an avian medical center as a surgeon. She was drawn to birds especially Crows because of her history with them. She found out about Crow shifters existence but she didn't had time to react cause the man in front of her was dying. And she needed to do what was necessary to save his life.
Despite what his people did to her, she found herself liking Krome's company. There was more to him than beneath the eyes and vice versa. She really saw the man underneath the tough exterior. He was a softie, he just wanted what was best for the Crow Blooded.
I liked how Bron came to like and respect Cora. The things he did for his King went beyond his role as the third. He fought for him as a family. To have Krome reach out to those he'd once considered as his enemies was a game changer.
Seeing the Banes again a a delightful treat. Gwen and Cora's interaction was beautifully done. Loved all the twists and turns.
HOW IT IS is the fourth novella in T. S. Joyce's OATH OF BANE series. It was fast-paced, heartwarming, alluring and a breathtaking ride. T. S. Joyce had me hooked for the first sentence until the last one. Another masterpiece. I can’t wait for what comes next. 5🌟🌟🌟🌟
Ahhh I seen t.s.joyce released a book on Instagram half 11 at night... so though Oww I have a read for a bit... 3am! I finished the book 🤣 didn’t Evan notice how long I’d been reading.
I love this book! When I seen this was going be the next book was like erm don’t think it be that good! Boy was I wrong. Krome was a amazing character really wasn’t that I thought he would be. Leading crow blooded for years with a hatred for the bears waiting one day to the next for the bears to fuck up.after getting his wings crushed after fighting with the bears. His craw do everything that can to help save there kings little do they know that are about to kidnap someone who will bring great power to krome!
Cora! The girl who had her world ripped apart when she was young after her dad sacrifice his self so his little girl could live. But after 3 years of not walking the most unexpected bird get her talking again. She does everything she can from that day forward to save the birds becoming a specialist vet working with birds. This exact thing that one saves her from lonely and not being able to talk is about to change her life again.. leading her to get kidnapped
For any one who enjoys paranorms with heart and story. I would recommend anything this author writes but this story really is well written and though reading the series of books in order will give you a good idea of background it is possible to pick this book up and enjoy it alone. I just promise that if you do read this one you are going to go back and read the rest and not be disappointed. As always, Joyce wrote her characters with well rounded and interesting personality. This brings you closer to the characters. Makes you cheer for them as they make choices and develops the plot. You know going into the book there will always be a HEA ending and yet you will still be gripped. Which also means that when you find out that you have to wait a whole month for the next book(because you're favorite P.R novelist just couldn't keep up with your ravenous need to read her books) you sit shuddering in your feening, hungrily waiting for your next hit of perfectly amazing paranormal character's HEA!
Wow..I knew this was going to be epic, stubborn, strong headed and loyal to his Murder crew Krome found his mate in Cora. Oh sweet Cora, so innocent and loyal herself fell head over heels in love with this Crow Shifter who she came to realized reminds her so much of the first crow she helped all those years ago. But Krome's Murder crew is restless, not getting to end the Bane Brothers has made his Murder crew think twice about his leadership to the crew. Due to him caring too much about not eliminating Cora who selfishly gave of her time to take care of him..and now his first in command wants to take over. But due to the bond Krome and Cora formed the take over didn't happened and all their effort yo get rid of their king failed..I am happy that Krome formed an alliance with the Bane Brother, now everyone will live in peace for now..cause I feel Laken will be back some how to get his revenge.. Love Krome and Cora story, looking forward to Bron's story...big fan as always Winzie19 🤗💞.
I went from hating Krome in Moore's story to falling in love with him in this story. When Krome went after Moore's mate, Moore broke his wings. Unable to change and his massive wings crippled, Krome is in agony and dying. Cora is a vet who specializes in birds. In desperation two of Krome's murder kidnap her and bring her back to help him. In spite of his pain Krome reams them out and demands they take care of her. Cora didn't know shifters existed and now she's expected to fix his wings. After hours of surgery where she had to rebreak bones and set them so they can heal properly it looks like Krome has a chance of regaining his ability to fly. He and Cora form a bond and when Cora's life is threatened by traitors in his murder he finds he will do anything to save her. I couldn't stop reading. Another awesome book by T.S. Joyce.
This series is a total different format from her usual writing style. I find all the books in this series very dark in content. She still makes the dominant, strong willed women amazing as always. Her normal humor does pop in but not as much as all her other series. I loved that this book took a total 180 to the Series storyline. I love the new characters and of course you can’t help but love the quirky mates that encourage others to snuggle her 27 chickens and her baby piglets! I’m looking forward to the next book! I’m excited to see where the new Alliance between the Bears & Crows go. As well as how Krome rebuilds his Murder with his Queen by his side goes and especially how Brom will hopefully find his mate and become a stronger Second for his King & Queen! I hope we see baby bear triplets! Fingers crossed!
Enjoyable read. I didn't love it though. This was definitely an oddly written series by her. First book was meh but I really liked 2 and 3. This one was I don't even know how to describe it. It was fast. Too fast. A lot happening....it was just too easy at least as far as the mate thing goes. Not just this book I noticed it in others in the series. The human women just kinda fell in line? I guess that's how you describe it. So, I'm not a big fan of this series. I'm used to her gritty emotional and funny style but you don't really get that this time. I'm not mad at her. Even authors have things in their lives they deal with and maybe she didn't put everything into this series because of that. I could be wrong. It doesn't matter though really. I love her stuff and not everyone does. We can't love it all. I still have one book to go.
Krome, King of the Crow Blooded has been watching and waiting to kill the Bane brothers, but the tides turned on him when he kidnapped Moore's mate to get to them. Now he is dying as a consequence, Moore shredded his wings and what good is a crow without the shy?
Cora is an avian surgeon who is kidnapped and when she is taken to Krome her world is turned upside down, or up rather. The bird shifter, or Crow Blooded whatever they are called is what her life has revolved around all her life, saving birds. Well now's her chance to save one that is half man and what a man!
Krome has always tried to keep up his father's legacy, he could never figure out why those bears would want to mate with a human until Cora that is.
Will this change the war between the bears and the Crow Blooded, or will it only get worse as Krome seeks vengeance?
Redemption arc, very nice. Some of my favorite lines:
“I’m not a bird. I’m one of the Crow Blooded.” “Well, that sounds way more majestic than what I’ve been calling you.” He winced and sat up slowly. His wings stayed limp behind him, and he swayed. “What do you call me?” “Bird-man.”
Summing up the resolution of the last three books very simply,
“Hey, hey,” Gwen said between laughs. “Krome, remember that time when you tried to kill us all because bears and humans were pairing up? And then…hahaha…and then! And then you did it yourself?”
As always, with all these grumpy dudes, it's the women who pull them all together.
“She likes margaritas, Aux. Trinity and Aurora hate tequila. They said no when I invite them over for margarita book club. I want her. Make it happen.”
I didn't want to like Krome...I really didn't. But after what happened at the end of the third book and the settling of what it meant to him...welp it was hard not to at least feel for him. (It also doesn't hurt that I have, like Cora, a bit of a soft spot for crows.) I love how she wheedles into him and changes him in this gentle way that's hard for even a stubborn ass Crow Blooded to fight...and just wow how it worked out...and the fact that there is a book that follows. O_O Cora is wonderful and Krome is so much better with here in his life. Even though when I started this series I wasn't sure I'd much like the whole novella set up and the thing between the crows & the bears...but it's really grown on me and I can't wait for the next book!!!! #TeamBron
What a surprise for Krome. After all the terrorizing that he had done in the previous books, who would have thought that his story and romance would be sentimental. Krome is in bad shape. Bron did some research and found Cora, an avian surgeon, to help Krome. Okay let’s say kidnapped for a good reason. Krome and Cora are thrown together without thoughts but soon something builds up and surprises both of them. Cora is as sweet as pie. The other Crows are starting to get jealous and restless. The only thing that they can think to do is to hurt Cora just because she is human. It’s a sweet romantic story. . . . Read On!
Very enjoyable and I liked getting Krome’s story. He showed a side that was strong, compassionate and kingly. Cora was great and I liked her reasons, even though they were sad, for becoming an avian specialist vet. Good that an alliance has been reached with the Bane bear brothers and that Krome dealt with his Murder so well. But one very confusing plot factor seems to be wrong. It is implied that her first pet crow ATLAS, was KROME, but Atlas was the wing shot injured bird and couldn’t ever fly. I believe Ruger, the wild crow, was the crow that was Krome as a youngster. It’s been a while since I read the bears stories and I wasn’t sure that I wanted to read Krome’s story as the crows really were not a very nice bunch, but fault was on both sides to some degree. Read through Kindle Unlimited.
After Moore's book, I thought the series was over. Krome was defeated. In this book, Krome is healed by an avian surgeon.
Cora has had her share of tragedy in her life, and already has a special connection to crows when the boys show up to kidnap her. She forges a special connection to Krome despite the crappy way his people treated her. It wasn't really his fault.
Cora brings a new perspective to the bear/crow war that lends a depth to this book the others lacked. Now I'm really looking forward to Bron's book!
The worst part about reading any of T. S. Joyce's books is that they are just too short! She is such an amazing story teller and I never want the books to end. In the first 3 books of this series you have a villain that you just HAVE to hate but then when you get to Krome's book, she explains his background and makes you finally understand why he has such a vendetta against the Bane brothers. I'm super excited for the next book to come out in June bc the next chapter for the Crow Blooded is just beginning.
Wow I didn’t expect this! Krome gets a story! I have to say I didn’t feel sorry for him at the end of the last one..well maybe a little but he was evil! Now I see a different side of him. Cora is a delight! I love her job and how unafraid she is once this gets going. I felt their relationship was a bit rushed. I really wasn’t feeling any connection between them until it happened.
I was impressed with Krome at the end and this author always drops the coolest surprises in her stories. No exception here. Not only that but Bron gets a book!
T. S. Joyce never disappoints with her vivid stories. Her books illicit strong feelings from laughing out loud to ugly crying. It's always been an adventure and fun reading one of her books and How it is does just that. Filled with giant bears and murderous crows but also heartfelt moments that brings a smile. A quick easy read with a happily ever after about crow shifters finding a mate against the rules and new friendships with bear shifter
