Ritual: An Essential Grimoire

Rate this book
Damien Echols and Lorri Davis share a beginner-friendly treasury of their most valuable practices for weaving magick into your everyday life.

The promise of magick is both simple and it is that magick can support you in any aspect of life, from helping you succeed in everyday tasks to enabling you to achieve your most cherished dreams. What’s more, you don’t even have to believe in magick to make it work. The only thing that’s required is regular practice―and the easiest way to practice is to make magickal rituals part of your daily life.

With An Essential Grimoire , magicians Damien Echols and Lorri Davis share a broad selection of their most effective rituals, meditations, and prayers―presented in terms accessible to all. “You won’t find a lot of arcane terminology or lengthy ceremonies here,” says Damien. “What you will find are simple practices to develop your own connection to the energy and intelligence of the universe.” Here you’ll

• Essential breath and concentration techniques for working with subtle energy
• Grounding practices to cleanse your body and environment from stagnant energies or thoughts
• Everyday meditations for improving sleep and dreams, blessing food, inviting abundance, and more
• On-the-spot practices that include invoking protection, relieving pain and anxiety, and seeing goodness in difficult situations
• Methods to amplify and reinforce your ritual work with talismans, celestial forces, and angel magick
• How ritual work can advance your spiritual evolution and openness to divine guidance
• Moving stories from Damien and Lorri about how magick changed their lives―and how it can change yours

Damien and Lorri learned magick to help them get through the most trying times―to help free Damien from his wrongful incarceration, then to help both of them heal from the traumatic aftereffects of his imprisonment. “Many of these rituals are the very same we used to rebuild our lives,” Lorri says. “We share these practices in the hopes that you will use them to survive, thrive, and create the life you desire.”

Damien Wayne Echols, along with Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin, is one of the three men, known as the West Memphis Three, who were convicted in the killing of three eight-year-old boys Steve Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore at Robin Hood Hills, West Memphis, Arkansas, on May 5, 1993.

Damien Echols was convicted of murder by a jury and sentenced to death by lethal injection. He was on death row under 23 hours per day lockdown at the Varner Supermax. On August 19, 2011, Echols, along with the two others collectively known at the West Memphis Three, were released from prison after their attorneys and the judge handling the upcoming retrial agreed to a deal. Under the terms of the Alford guilty plea, Echols and his co-defendents pleaded guilty to three counts of first degree murder while maintaining their innocence. DNA evidence failed to connect Echols or his co-defendents to the crime.

Disclaimer; I received an online copy of this book through NetGallery.

Let me start with a note about my personal preference, which doubtlessly has influence over my review of this book.
I don't believe in a Christian god, not Christian morals - contrary to the authors of this book. This system of beliefs expressed by the authors penetrates the book a tad bit too much for my personal taste, which is why I removed a star.

If you are Christian, or otherwise aligned with monotheism and magic, you will undoubtedly find that this book offers an extension to your practice!

Aside from that, it is very well written and I like the design, overview and flow of this book. Some parts of this book read like a personal story, vividly enough for you to actually be there, while providing you with the means the authors used to escape such vile situations as being confronted with a loved one convicted & awaiting a lethal injection.

The practices described are really effectively. I picked a few basic ones and found them to be not just effective, but advancing. You know their methods are tried and tested, and this gives me the feeling that they would improve anyone's daily life.

That being said; grimoire to me refers so a different kind of book, and while I understand the authors approach after reading it, it might be a bit misleading to those who expect incantations, potions and rituals in the classical magical sense.

If you're looking for a book which contains a lot of practical methods alongside the means of energy work, visualisation, meditation and kinetic magic, this could be the addition you're looking for, for me it's a bit too close to general spiritualism than traditional methods of witchcraft.

Another drawback is a heavy focus on positive thinking, akin to manifestation gurus - with some of the same messaging. This, depending on the reader, might be positive and encouraging, yet to me it was more akin to toxic positivity and wishful thinking. Again, not saying it's bad, simply that this isn't my cup of tea.

Contents include;
- a diverse array of meditations, visualisations, energy cycling and grounding exercises
- Sigil magic
- a course in manifestation
- affirmations
- a few pages of correspondences (!)

Sadly no bibliography to lead you to other books, besides the author's prior works.

All in all; a solid book, nothing too fancy, but I kinda like it.

As a spiritual person I've read quite a few books that's been described as a grimoire and this one... was a one of a kind. I was super excited about reading this but it's honestly not my cup of tea. There is probably someone out there who might enjoy it but mixing magic with the christian God and angels is simply not my thing. I really wanted to like this book but I just didn't. Its well written and everything but as I said, its just not my cup of tea.

This is a amazing book. I kind of think it's a little ahead of it's time. This powerhouse couple really has brought Western tradition together with ancien believes in rituals. After all the whole point of all of us is to find our way to the garden. I've been reading some of the other reviews from the other witches in the community. They say they're advanced witches but I don't think in their spiritual darma they're ready to hear these truths. The practices in this book, are in fact ancient wisdom filled with wonderful techniques, For a modern time I'm the mother of a toddler and I don't have time to sit for hours and meditate and ritualize and communicate with the gods as much as I'd like to. This book is filled with power this book will bring you closer to your brothers and sisters of humanity. This couple has only given us a path to love ourselves ourselves others and this beautiful world full of ancient in your wisdom. I personally I wish I could think Damien and Lorri. For all of my study on Hinduism religion witchcraft norse and all the other pantheons this book brings them together. Remember love everyone and love yourself you are an aspect of God, And this book will give you that power in that sense of love.

I don't know how this stands as a magick book but there certainly are very good rituals here for grounding, meditation and druid type practice.

I received this copy from NetGalley in exchange for my review. I am not a beginner witch by any means but I like to scout around for beginner-friendly books for friends that are interested in getting into the craft. This is not the first book I've read from Damien Echols. I was a little underwhelmed by his book High Magick, but wanted to give him another chance.

First off, this book is heavily religious. For beginners who don't know, witchcraft is not inherently religious. I have met Catholic and Christian witches. I am personally not a fan as I have had a bad experience with both religions. I do wish there was more of a disclaimer that let people know they could separate the two. Not only that, they randomly have spells or rituals involving other gods. While I am all for eclectic information, it felt very out of context since they mentioned how their practice brought them closer to God and angels. While it is a grimoire that shares both Damien and Lorrie's experiences (though this felt like it was only written in Lorrie's voice) they added in a lot of extras that did not need to be there.

The spells and exercises were pretty decent. They went over a lot of good basics that I have used and some I still use regularly. In my opinion, I felt they included some spells that are more advanced and would not give to a beginner. That was one of my main issues with the other book I read. For example, I would not say cord-cutting is a beginner ritual. That is just my opinion as others would disagree, but feel that it is important to say.

Overall, I would recommend that if you are not of the Christian faith or similar religions, to just borrow this from the library and only read the exercises and spells. I also would recommend to all readers to do your research on the cultures behind some of these practices and make sure you aren't accidentally appropriating or practicing from a closed practice. If you're a Christian witch looking to start out, this is the perfect book for you.

Eddie Munson on the latest (american military industrial complex sponsored <3)season of Stranger Things was my unknowing introduction to Damien Echols, followed quickly by his appearance as a floating space fish in the superb limited series Midnight Gospel.

I had a look at all of his books, and decided (stupidly) that this one was the one to begin with. My interest in magic as a spiritual path or sort of underpinning project has increased in my current state of rest and relaxation (sponsored by the German welfare state—it’s honestly been one of the best times of my life so far!). I use art as a spiritual practice already, and it’s not hard to imagine adding some occult methodologies to my already ritualised life. I thought Ritual Life might be an easy sort of appetiser, before I tackle the much more difficult ‘canon’ of magickal works.

This is book is not that.

It’s not bad, it’s just not terribly good either. It’s co-written by Damien and his wife, who I’m sure is a lovely person and vital to him in many ways. It’s just she also reads as a bit basic, and everything I dislike in het cis white women. She appears to cling to him, angels, her own unsure personality and I started skipping whole sections where she talks about her life and rituals. (Just to be clear: this critique says more about me than it does about her. I know I despise her type, because I’ve never allowed myself a single minute of limply holding on to another person, especially a man—and that’s a result of my life and circumstances. But it also makes her a terrible teacher for me.)

Damien’s sections were fascinating, especially his recollections from prison. I love the highly personal aspect of magic, and by his limiting circumstances, he’s a great example of how to be creative with what you have.

Anyway, probably not the worst book, but also if you hate basic bitches like I do, skip this one.

Very practical and natural magical techniques are presented in this book. Since all can't be explained in one ritual, notes bellow which leads you other similar ritual in the book would be welcomed. But there is no any. Great book for occult students to learn and develop their own systems or just to explore and practice from this one.

Interesting ideas and good explanations. Would've liked a bit more about what types of "results" the authors saw from their practices, and bit less of Lorri's Damien worship.

Quite complete, very practical, and with different versions of the exercises so that each reader can choose the one they prefer. It is quite simple, direct, and with a light style, although it doesn't neglect the details in terms of explanations. No prior knowledge is required either, and I would go so far as to say that it's a practical course in ritual magic that, although useful for new readers, complements Damien's previous books.

I was surprised to see how few reviews there are, as I think of this book as one of the best in the genre. Many authors on the subject tend to get a little squirrelly, and this was one of the few that I felt comfortable with. Some of the reviews here point out that there are Christian prayers, etc. included here, but the book was also largely non-dogmatic. The authors are clearly RHP, but regardless of one's personal beliefs, there are many that could gain a lot from this book. A huge portion of the book is some variant of visual meditations, which were quite well done.

For any type of magickal practitioner or anyone drawn to high magick dive in to the book. This is the second book written by Damien and Lorri but, you will see they both have different styles. The book comes together and is extremely user friendly. Unfortunately the early reviewers, we’re completely lost with the material. I find it strange as you can tell the early reviewers, weren’t the target audience. The book is on the smaller side but, can easily be added to one’s daily practice.

This is a sweet little book, a collection of many rituals and small practices that people could use to develop or deepen their spirituality. I was surprised at the number of references to God but less surprised about references to angels and archangels, having read Damien's book about his time on death row. I know that may be off putting for some but if that's not a concern for you then you might enjoy the book.

Super accessible little book with practical rituals. I found most of the rituals to be a lot like guided visualization meditations with the most exotic occult practice being the LBRP and Cabalistic cross. I really like how Damien and Lorri focus on rituals that require very little tools and set up so that you can do it on the go. If you are curious in pursuing a magical practice, I think it is a very good beginner’s book.

I'm not a Christian Witch but I think that different people walk different Paths and this book about the rituals of a specific couple of persons.
I don't share their path but there were some interesting idea and I appreciated the spirituality behind what I read.
It's not a book for beginners.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

inspiring and practical

Love how they make high magick accessible and practical for every day while keeping the essence of the teaching being spiritual evolution at the core at all times. Can’t wait to put it all into practice and saturate my life with magic as I do my great work.

I picked up this book at the library because I liked the cover. When I realized Damien Echols was the author I decided to borrow it because I am familiar with the case that he is associated with and I wanted to see how he is doing rebuilding his life after prison. I was happy to read that he is thriving in his marriage and finding meaning in his spiritual practices. Like other reviews have said, this book is more christen themed then expected and I wasn't into that aspect of it, but it does have some nice visualization practices in it and overall, I was just happy to read that Damien is doing okay after everything that happened to him.

3.5 stars, rounded down

I have no prior experience with Magick or witchcraft, so I took this book at face value. I grabbed it because I liked the cover, and when I saw Damien Echols was the author (Paradise Lost was a turning point in my worldview), I knew I should give it a chance.

I like the style it’s written in, and I like how practical and descriptive the rituals are. Though Damien and Lorri use a lot of Christian imagery, I imagine that most of their rituals can be implemented regardless of your faith. In particular, I liked the fourfold breath, sinking into the earth, and the vacuum, all of which I’ve tried since reading and have felt spiritual improvement. I also like several of the sections that aren’t explicit rituals, where Damien and Lorri talk more about Magickal philosophy and their own experiences. I related less to the second half of the book, which were more explicitly about Magick and not just visualization or mindfulness, but I liked the ideas of many of these rituals, especially blessing food, directing energy for pain relief, and plant magick. I can see myself doing these practices in the future, should I find Magick to be my path (or not; again most of these rituals are religiously flexible, in my opinion).

As much as I like the practicality in this book, I need to learn more about Magick before I can call it truly helpful. I’m more familiar with Yoga, which (according to this book) is the eastern equivalent of Magick. I’m on a spiritual journey and I have Christian roots, so I don’t know if I believe in Magick, or if these practices are just very specialized mindfulness techniques. If they are, great! I still find them useful. But I will need to do more research before I can declare this an essential grimoire. Other reviews have said that these techniques are more akin to positive thinking and manifestation than they are to real witchcraft, and I’ll take their word for it. If I decided to study Magick further, I’ll keep this book in mind, and maybe I’ll be ready to implement more of the rituals by then.

In all, I liked this book. It was easy to read, and I think people of different faith backgrounds can find practices in here that will help on their journeys. But based on more informed reviews, it may not be the Magickal text that it’s selling itself as.

I feel like a lot of my fellow reviewers reviews are a bit misleading so allow me to take the time to address some of the common complaints I see and then give my personal opinion on the book. When you see this book you may think the word ritual means ceremonial magick. You may think that there are several intricate rituals of calling the elements or working with Angels and so forth. This is not that, if you are looking for that this book is not for you. Ritual can be those things but it can also be brushing your teeth every night, having coffee in the morning, praying before bed, blowing candles out on a Birthday cake. The kind of ritual this book is talking about is more along the lines of habit. The author who was wrongfully arrested and in jail writes about the rituals he did that helped him im that situation. There were no athames, magick wands, incense, and an altar of candles at his disposal. What he had was his mind and body and soul. Another common complaint I’ve seen is the authors faith. The author as far as I can tell is heavily influenced by Abrahamic religion and calls upon primarily Arch Angels though there is a Ritual that evolves a Sumerian deity. This isn’t really shoved down the readers throat and if one wanted to any number of deities or lack of could be replaced at a readers own discretion. The way the author uses God is synonymous with how some would use the Universe as a cosmic power that provides order. I can understand some reactions people have with Church hurt but all I can say is if you read this book don’t dismiss rituals or chapters based on the Christian tilt of the Authors.

Now I have been studying the Occult and Magick since I was a young teen. There are a lot of books that give you ceremonial spells and others that consider a spell to be as simple as having rosemary under your window to protect against psychic disturbance with no real ritual of any kind taking part. This book does neither. This book gets to the core of what makes magick work. Energy manipulation and visualization. A lot of people in the occult sphere learn about this early on and then go on to use those skills to cast spells to meet their end goal while this provides a much more in depth and nuanced view in how to utilize your energy in a way that helps you in a practical manner. For instance there is grounding but also how to cleanse a space or object. How to use energy to help obscure an object, how to use these tools to help you sleep and so on. These tools in my opinion are vital to master for anyone who wants to grow further into magick and realizes it is highly impractical to rely on a large assortment of tools or sources of energy.

Seems a bit more toned-down and diluted than Echols’ earlier book ‘High Magick’ (I assume to make it seem less scary to the normies), but it’s still full of useful knowledge and practices. Would recommend to anyone.

A really nice book of foundational practices, most of which you could do at any time, out and about. Energy work, shielding, grounding, centering, etc.
