Jason Dalgliesh was born on the south coast of England and grew up in Hampshire, UK. He has worked in the power transmission industry, the retail sector, call centres and as a night-owl in a bakery. His greatest challenge of all is ongoing, as a stay at home parent.
He is presently writing the Dark Yorkshire crime-series, featuring DI Nathaniel Caslin.
The novels are set in Yorkshire, England. The medieval City of York is Caslin's home town and the plot lines take in some of the UK's most rugged and beautiful landscapes, from the windswept North Sea coastline and across the stunning North York Moors.
Penned in the style of the Crime Noir genre, Caslin is a deep character, as flawed as he is brilliant, battling his own demons as much as those he is pitted against. Readers who enjoy gritty, atmospheric thrillers will find the series a must read.
Having spent time abroad, Jason has lived and worked in various parts of England as well as the Scottish Highlands. He currently resides in the East Riding, with his wife and two young children.
Kindle Unlimited choice...now have read 5 books in this series as they are mostly interesting and easily read, but the crimes are never easily resolved and the main dude is forever getting himself in harm's way. There are some pretty gnarly family revelations that play a part in the featured crime in this book...No spoilers. I don't think #6 will be published before my Unlimited subscription expires, but will try to remember it when next I sign up. Yes, I have definitely gotten my money's worth for a month.
Fear the Past is not a novel of red herrings a'plenty. Those novels have their place, but Mr. Dalgliesh's approach is subtle and when various findings are at last revealed, one is inclined to take in a soft breath and softly sigh. This is a plot driven story and, while not character driven, each character is perfectly "cast." The lead character is definitely not free of faults, those faults largely understandable to the reader. However, those faults do create tension and are realistic. The story itself is very good, with the reader trying to make connections as the constabulary seeks to do likewise,. This process is almost an interactive process. The developments, complicated though they seem, are surprising in the basic humanity ultimately unmasked. Waiting for Book 6 as there is much still to be learned about our DI Nate Caslin.
Another excellent read from JM Dalgleish. It is a real puzzle because there are so many suspects to choose from. Caslin and his team begin to form a picture but cannot get it into clear focus. When things do start to reveal themselves to Caslin he finds himself in an impossible situation. Any action he takes could be the wrong one.
It would seem that the author has done a lot of specialised research for this, particularly in the field of forensic pathology, managing to give sufficient detail to fit his purpose without straying into the realms of gratuitous gore. There is just one small, non-technical detail which I could have wished he had got right but it is arguable that it was necessary in order to move the story along so it just may be forgivable.
This book was a hand sticker, not that I wanted to put it down, there was too much going on for that! I am sad that I only have one more in this series to read, I will miss them when they are all finished.
I was midway through this book when I got a message from the author saying that he is hopeful a production company will take up the option to film the Dark Yorkshire books. I can't wait. They will make a great TV series in my opinion. The flawed DI Caslin is a complex character and the plot matches that complex nature perfectly. Even when things are going well there is always problems elsewhere in Caslin's life. Well written as always I just found that too much of the story was revealed by DC Terry Holts investigations on the station computer (hence the 4 stars). That said a well thought through plot and a great deal going on.
Detective Caslin becomes embroiled in a case that leads him back to a significant financial heist that occurred in the 1980s.
The narrative is set against the picturesque backdrop of the city of York and its surrounding landscapes, and it features a cast of characters that includes UK gangs, corrupt police officers, and expatriates living lavishly in Spain.
As Caslin navigates this complex web of intrigue, he faces the most significant personal dilemma of his career, which ultimately concludes in an unforeseen manner.
Fear in the Past is another solid detective story from J.M.Dalglish set in Yorkshire and involving turf wars between gangs whose disputes date back to a major heist thirty or more years previously. Inspector Nate Carlin, still based in Fulford, York, despite transferring jobs to head up a new squad, tackles a number of murders linked to the local strife and uncovers a can of worms which includes bent coppers. An easy-to-read interesting yarn.
David Lowther. Author of The Blue Pencil, Liberating Belsen, Two Families at War and The Summer of’39, all published by Sacristy Press.
Again Caslin gets embroiled in a complex plot involving a set of crimes, some which go back 30 years. And again, the solution is hard to follow. However, until the end, the story is interesting and the author's penchant for including local landmarks makes the settings more realistic. The plots do not have to be so complex to still involve us. In addition, Caslin's hairbreadth escapes from almost certain death are not believable. In other words, the story progresses nicely until the final chapters when everything explodes. A little less drama can still make for an interesting story!
Didn’t disappoint! JM Dalgleish just gets better and better with every book. Pacey and with that “don’t want to put this down” ingredient, loved the story lines threaded through .... one minute on the edge of your seat and emotionally charged the next. Surprised to find myself tearful towards the end and love that I’ve never guessed where the story is going! Ooh and excited to hear the next one is already cooking and promises to be a cracking serial killer job.... way to go Jason!
As always Mr. Dalgliesh delivers a story that is compelling and keeps your interest until the end. This time around he has woven a plotline that involves gangsters, private eyes and the old stand by "the red haired mysterious woman". Using the backdrop of the county and city of York our intrepid inspectors try to solve multiple murders and how and if they are connected. Throw in some personal family matters and you have a great story.
A satisfying crime novel with a good story and many twists and stings in the tail. Caslin is now growing on me , he seemed a bit sorry for himself in earlier books . Although he is a bit of a loose cannon at times and seems to have nine lives ,the novel in the main rings fairly true .This book does give some more background to Nathaniel which is quite interesting. I also like these books as I know a lot of the areas mentioned . I look forward to the next one .
Fear The Past - There’s a surprise round every corner!!
Another enthralling book by J M Dalgliesh. I love reading these books because the author takes great pride in getting all their facts right at the same time as giving the reader a fantastic book. This really is a superbly written series of books and I’m about to embark on the final one, Book 6. I really hope there’s another book or series of books for me to get my teeth into.
An excellent fifth book in the series and Caslin keeps going from strength to strength. Even though DI Caslin keeps getting beaten up and putting himself at danger, often not telling his colleagues what he's doing or where he's going, he's still a great character.
Looking forward to the next in the series.
I received a free copy of this audiobook either from the author or a promotion or giveaway and am voluntarily writing an honest and unbiased review.
I wouldn't say J M Dalgliesh is on a par with authors like Stuart MacBride but I enjoy this writer's style and I slot him in the middleweight division of crime fiction in terms of plot complexity and violence. There are a few niggles that should have been picked up during the editing process but it seems my attitude towards such things makes me something of a dinosaur.
Caslin and his team are involved with families that are at war with each other, and which started with an airport raid 30 years or so previously. But this particular case is far closer to home in more ways than one, than Caslin could ever have thought. This is a great read like all the others in the Dark Yorkshire series.
Caslin investigates a number of crimes and murders that get intertwined as a result of the fencing of gains from a good bullion robbery involving the police and currently jailed criminals. The pieces of the jigsaw are slotted together and result in most perpetrators losing their lives before being brought to justice.
As always, well written and plotted out - hence the four stars. The reason for not five stars is my personal disappointment, basically, almost all the bad guys get away. Too many good guys are killed and/or get their honor smeared. I have the sinking feeling the top bad guy will get away Scott free and that there is another one embedded in the hierarchy.
This story starts with a bomb explosion in a taxi office owned by local villains. When Caslin and Hunter go to investigate they soon realise this is a gang warfare thing, and the trail leads to a big robbery in Manchester many years before. The fallout from this robbery ends up nearer to home than Caslin would like. A enjoyable story set in York and the North York moors.
This detective would be sort of impressive for an everyman, a mechanic or something, but he's sometimes a bit slow for a lead detective. And above average rash. That's not inherently terrible, but I'm coming to the conclusion that it's just not my favorite sort. I like some of the books in this series better than others though, so I'll still read the next book.
Another superb story in this series. A bombing and a murder pull the team into a possible gang war and reveal past secrets and conspiracies that push the team to the limit. A cracking dark and twisted police procedural with excellent strong real characters. I really like this authors work and this is a,good one. Highly recommended.
Once again J M Dalgliesh has written a really gripping story. The book is well thought out and well written. There were a few surprises that I did not expect. Highly recommended for anyone who really enjoys a great crime thriller.
This starts with a murder and a bombing . An event from 30 years prior leads to multiple other murders and a puzzling mystery. DI Caslin is good at this , pulling threads and finding potential suspects .
The 5th book in the Dark Yorkshire series is the best so far. Nathaniel Caslin seems to have more control over his demons (far less drinking than previous books), his career is back on track, and yet his life is still in turmoil.
Another excellent outing for D I Caslin in beautiful Yorkshire. There was a large cast of characters involved in dreadful crimes. A sensational twist heralded the dramatic ending. Can’t wait to read the next one!
Book 5 in the Dark Yorkshire series did not disappoint! There was a lot of action and the characters really came to life in this one. Caslin is in top form, and his dad is back for the ride. I would read these in order, as the character development is a big part of the story.
Well I didn't see that one coming. I thought Caslins father was above reproach and why he was always so hard on Caslin . With each book this series just gets better.
Convoluted story, hard to keep all the characters straight. In spite of that, it was an interesting, well-written story about an honorable officer who struggled with the prospect oh having to have his father arrested. Enjoyable!
