While taking the first vacation of his retirement, former LAPD Detective Stan Kolinski helps the San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Department solve a series of murders that occurred on Moonstone Beach Drive in quaint Cambria, California.
A well written mystery I bought before a trip to Cambria. What I didn’t like was the typical Sheriff vs. CHP territorial bickering and withholding of information that I guess is pretty typical. What I liked was a clever whodunit with interesting investigative work. I would’ve liked more small community reactions being that Cambria is such a small idyllic community for something like this to happen. Overall a good read.
I devoured Bird's Max Springer series (six books) about a retired CIA agent who keeps getting dragged back in to help with situations on an ad-hoc basis. I can't recommend that series enough.
Bird has another series, the Stan Kolinski mysteries. I think that each book stands on its own, unlike that Max Springer books which are better read in sequence.
Stan K is a retired LAPD Homicide Detective. He and his wife visit Cambria, California just after several murders take place on Moonstone Beach Drive. Because local law enforcement have no experience with serial killers, they ask Stan to join their team as a Consultant.
This is one of the best books I've read! The way the author hides the identity of the killer from us, even as Stan interviews the witnesses / possible suspects including the killer. The way the author goes back in time and reveals each dastardly step taken by the killer as he works towards his ultimate goal of ... spoiler ... that's all I'm saying.
I've read the first three Stan K mysteries. Total departure from the Max Springer books but alike in that the characters are likeable. So far, both of the Stan mysteries take place in California.
If you're a fan of murder mysteries, you gotta read the Stan Kolinski books by novice author D. Wayne Bird. As far as I know, his books are only available at Amazon. I've never seen them in a bookstore, or any store for that matter.
After getting through the part where Stan Kolinski introduces himself to the reader (which I thought could have been done in about two paragraphs instead of several pages), the book is a page-turner. I couldn't put it down.
Five people are murdered in quiet Cambria, California along Moonstone Beach Drive. The local law enforcement has no experience solving serial murders so ask Stan Kolinski, who is on vacation there, to help them because he is a retired LAPD Homicide Detective.
As a frequent visitor to Cambria, I delighted in reading about the places I've eaten, slept or visited.
The Stan Kolinski mysteries are fun reading but my favorite series by this author is the Max Springer series which, IMHO, should be purchased by someone in Hollywood and put on the silver screen. Big screen bromance action-filled franchise of five (so far) movies OR turned into episodic TV, maybe by a Dick Wolfe-type of exec.
