Rate this book
From the bestselling author of the Gideon Johann Western Series and the Wild Horse Westerns Series comes the captivating new Western novel, Loose Ends!

Little does the reclusive Jake Mason know that his life is about to take a dramatic turn when he catches the tomato stealing Nicolette Amar sleeping in his shed. After years of living alone with only his dog, Cronus, Jake finds himself unable to turn his back on the runaway orphan once he learns of the girl’s plight, even if getting involved in another’s affairs clashes with every fiber of his being. The quest to find Nicolette a new home will cause Jake to revisit his past life as an outlaw and to face his daughter, Stacey, which he abandoned years ago. Will the hard-luck Nicolette find the home she so desperately wants? Can Jake make peace with his past and his daughter, and in the turn, provide Stacey the opportunity to forgive her father and be healed of her own demons? Loose Ends is a frolicking western that delves into how life choices can have consequences for decades on not only the person making those decisions, but those that they love.

Duane Boehm has written another western novel with enough humor, heartbreak, love, and outlaws to keep you turning the page.

Duane Boehm grew up on a farm outside of Petersburg, Illinois. All the time spent driving a tractor gave him plenty of opportunity to let his imagination run wild and not tear up too much equipment. The two passions he developed early in life were the love of playing guitar and reading books.

He eventually moved to a mini-farm outside of Murfreesboro, Tennessee with his wife and replaced planting corn with trees and raising dogs. For a number of years he worked as an IT consultant and continued with being a part-time musician and songwriter. He dabbled in writing short stories with the idea in the back of his mind that someday he would write a novel. One Christmas after watching "A Christmas Carol", he was inspired to begin his journey as a novelist.

Oh yeh! Definitely five stars worthy, and more if I was permissible! This tear jerker will definitely keep you turning pages so fast your fingers will tire out! I was impressed with the old outlaw Jake's immediate reaction to the young girl's (Nivolette) demise! Nobody writes a better Western!

I have been a Duane Boehm fan for some time. I have enjoyed his colorful storytelling filled with love, action, and every sort of human condition. Duane does not require pages and pages to set up a scene. He quickly causes you to become entwined with his characters. We the readers find ourselves laughing, hoping, and getting watery eyes as we feel and identity with each of his creative personalities. This is a story of a man's redemptive journey back to the scene of the greatest mistake of his life. It is a story but it feels like reality on so many levels. Duane does not gloss over be abrasive parts of our human nature. If you're looking for a Hallmark kind of story then you should keep looking. Duane's stories are raw and real. His Western settings are a bonus. I encourage you to mount your own imaginary horse and take a ride through this wonderful yarn that just might press all sorts of personal buttons and.. enjoy the ride.

Love after the storms of life bring rain

Forgiveness among the thorns and heart scars from mistakes earlier In learning how to live your life in spite of them. Jake has a change of heart in his older years and found out family is everything and they do not have to be by blood relationship. You have to forgive yourself and accept yourself before you can ask it of others. It takes courage and admitting your mistakes is part of being free to grow in your life in the present to the future. Happiness comes with that self acceptance and knowing you tried to do the right thing even if late in your life realizing what that might mean. It is never to late to try to make amends and to find love again.

This has to be the cutest book I have read in a long time. Ex outlaw Jake Mason takes in an abused orphan girl and that motivates him not only find a permanent home for the orphan, Nicolette, but to try to reconcile with his daughter whom he had abandoned years earlier. He and Nicolette make the journey to his daughters and what happens changes all their lives. This story has humor, sadness and a hint of romance near the end. It manages to have a somewhat feel good ending despite the circumstances. You definitely will not go wrong in buying and reading this book.

Great book

The beginning of this book was with Jake fussing to his dog about eating all his breakfast and not giving the last biscuit to the dog.The dog was sulking because of it. When he found his first ripe tomatoes had disappeared from his garden he discovered a young girl in his tool shed. I had trouble putting this book down and enjoyed it immensely. Duane Boehm is a author I watch for as his new books come out.

From Hermit to Hero

Diane Boehm is easily one of my favorite authors. His masterful telling of this story of an old codger of a man rescuing a vulnerable young girl who in turn rescues him from himself is an uplifting tale full of interesting and contrasting characters that are entertaining and well worth one's time. I prefer stand alone novels and look forward to Duane's next effort.

Forgiving and reconciling

It seems that the farther we sometimes try to run away from ourselves and our problems we never get anywhere. Jake Mason (Lange) has his hermit life turned upside down when an abused runaway shows up at his cabin. Her openness challenges Jake to try and right the biggest wrong he has ever committed. Tragic surprise leads to some positive life changes and lessons to be contemplated by the reader. Good book!

A story of redemption, love, and forgiveness

So far, I haven't read a story by this author I didn't like! And this one didn't disappoint. This is a story about a old outlaw full of regrets over his past life only to have a runaway girl needing help to set him off on an adventure to find redemption and forgiveness.

Outstanding as always! Spoiler alert....

Outstanding story that delivers on the synopsis.....a bit sad to have Jake die and don't necessarily agree it was needed to complete the storyline of forgiveness. Style of writing superb as usual. Would love to see western books by Duane more often!

Loved the book

With the exception of the over use of the modern phrase, "back in the day", I found the story very good. Some use of, " at the end of the day ", another modern day phrase, was distracting for me. I grew up with OLD cowboys and they didn't talk in today's vernacular.

Still liked the story!!

Excellent Western Character Study

Mr Boehm is excellent at developing interesting characters, and weaving them into a compelling storyline. His stories can be both heartwarming and heart wrenching, sometimes simultaneously, but are always entertaining top quality reads. He is at his best with "Loose Ends."

Should become a classic.

A very engaging story .
Undecided about the stry's end. C.J. Petit once said sometimes the character o story just writes itself. But once I started it I could not put it down.

WOW WHAT A GREAT BOOK.

Beautifully written. The characters seemed real and they were developed with feeling. The introspection was concise and not overly wordy. Make sure you have a box of tissues nearby for the ending.

It's very sad, but very funny...

Such a riveting tale. Gritty, but gorgeous. The characters are slap your face and in your face. Unpredictable and occasionally using more than one of their nine lives. Just had to keep reading. Left me wanting more.
