The Cult

Rate this book
New York Times bestselling author Penelope Sky pens another dark and suspenseful masterpiece.

Fender and Magnus have moved on from the camp. But someone else has moved in.

The Cult.

I see his wicked smile in the theatre. I see it in the apartment across from mine.

I see it everywhere.

Before I can run, I'm taken.

And when I wake up...I'm in the middle of nowhere.

The man who's taken me claims to be a demon.

And claims I'm his angel.

What happens when he finds out I don't have wings?

I'm not the only prisoner in this forest. There's a little girl too. Her name is Claire. She's beautiful, happy, wonderful. It's my responsibility to protect her--and I will give my life to accomplish that.

She says her father will save us both.

She says he's powerful, formidable, that he'll burn this entire forest to get to her.

I hope she's right.

*** Claire is unharmed throughout this story. There is no violence against children of any kind. ***

Told in dual POV, 1st person, it’s the first installment in the "Cult" series and it’s a bit cliffy. My major problem with this story is there was no romance its plot wasn’t something new or unique and I wish it was dark! Don’t get me wrong, it has some dark elements (cult stuff) but I can’t say it’s a dark story though. I hope in the next book there will be some romance between the MCs (if I decided to go for the book, that’s it) and hopefully, there will be some darkness lurking… All in all, it was an OK read, and hope you enjoy it!

Set in the world of The Chateau (France) and not the Buttons, Lingerie, Skull Kings world (Italy). These are dark, torturous books.

The Cult deals with exactly that - a cult - a freaking scary cult. Fender abandoned The Camp and The Cult moved in. The Cult with its hierarchy of demons and their legion of followers - the Malevolent - search out and kidnap women they view as angels. Beatrice, Claire, and Constance have been taken by the Cult. Their experiences will shape them. Some will show strength and some will crumble under the hands of the demons.

The characterization is excellent. Claire is innocent and a ray of sunshine. Benton is intense and serious but a fantastic father to Claire. Constance is strong and determined. Forneus - it's hard to find words for that delusional psychopath - let's just say he is totally unhinged. Amon - there are no words, just hope you never meet hiim.

This story was intense and it seemed that every turn of a page introduced another facet to the Cult. Never having any clue as to what was going to happen next, kept me excited to read on. It does not end in a cliffhanger but you know something crazy is going to happen in the next book.

I still say that you can not go wrong with reading a Penelope Sky story and this one is great but be warned that these last couple of books have been dark.

Review :
Another hit by one of my fav authors! I am such a huge fan of this author and am always jumping into everything she writes. The blurb of this one was a bit vague but I got the hint that it would be a dark mysterious thriller type book with a bit of a steam and romance.

I won't divulge much into the storyline because I think that you need to go into this one blind. The author has the best surprise for you in this one and I think she has outdone herself with this plotline! I am totally hooked! The ending had me gobsmacked and I can't wait for the next install because I need all the answers.

Definitely recommending this one to all the Dark Thrilling romance loving people out there. Trust me, just go into this one, the ride is worth it!

At 19 pages into this book, I ordered the sequel. On page 40, I was wishing I hadn't. By page 100, I was completely engrossed, sucked in, and glad I hadn't canceled my order. When I had finished reading, I was pulling my hair out in frustration that the sequel wouldn't be in my hands until i got home from work. (It's available for free on Kindle Unlimited. I downloaded it. I couldn't wait.)

I'm not exactly sure what about this tale that had me off to a slow start. It was definitely the writing, but I'm unable to put into words WHY it was the writing. I don't read a lot of YA, and the book did come off very young. Not like it was written for someone young but written by someone young. Think wattpad with perfect grammer and editing.

It's hard to put this tale into a genre. It's suspenful. It's YA horror. The ending turns into dark romance, taking a stride on the spicy side. (Only the last 30 pages have anything resembling zest and its mild.)

Against my apprehensions, I actually enjoyed this read. The plot is very reminiscent of The Butterfly Garden (by: Dot Hutchinson) only with angels instead of butterflies. Removable wings instead of tattoos.

A creepy atmosphere with religious undertones had me reading on past my bedtime. What it lacks in writing sophistication it makes up for in storyline and pace. It's fast moving with easily digestible chapters.

Constance is the perfect FMC. Her strengths shine through the pages while still portraying her weaknesses, fear, and despair. She pulls out all the stops to protect those around her, only betraying her own struggles in private.

Even though the book is told in duel POVs, it was still hard to get a true grasp of Benton's character. He is stoic. Strong and cold. The only time he let down his guard was around Clair, his daughter. She was the only person he loved.

This book truly had a cult story that I've never heard before, I really love the idea! The story was amazing, and so were the characters, minus Beatrice (sns). The story was very fast-paced for me but I really enjoyed it! I love how Penelope incorporated the Catacombs as the location for the Chasseurs. I can't wait to read more in 'The Catacombs'.

The premise of this book seemed so enticing. A cult headed up by a man who claims to be a demon? I was sold. But the execution was so lackluster. I'll start with the obvious plot point —the cult. Forneus himself was pretty interesting, and the unanswered question of what he was remained compelling throughout. However, the lack of expansion on this left me pretty dissatisfied, and his absence throughout the last third of the book just seemed puzzling to me. The intention behind leaving him out was quite clear —to allow time for other characters to bond— but his impression barely seemed to linger on the characters which only negatively impacted the flow of the story for me.

Constance as the FMC did a disservice to the entirety of the story; she lacked depth and was only likable when she interacted with the kid, Claire. We learned nothing of her past, so her thought process seldom made sense. On one occasion, she suggests the angels (kidnapped women) build a boat to escape the demonic cult. As a reader, I immediately question how she knows how to build a boat and wondered if this were when we'd get some glimpse into her past and understand how she became so handy, but no. Even when questioned by other characters on how they'd do this, the only response she could come up with was "it just needs to float". When it came to recalling where the river was to escape via, she said she memorized the stars. Once again, we weren't given any indication as to how she knew how to do this.

There was also a brief moment where she referenced how hard it was to watch someone go through the same torture she'd gone through, but nothing had happened to her throughout the story that could be considered "torture" so again, I was left to wonder. Perhaps this was an easter egg to an assault prior to the beginning of the story? Who knows, I certainly didn't. There were so many missed opportunities that could've served to build a relationship between readers and Constance, who otherwise had all the charisma of a plank of wood.

As for Benton, our other main character, he started off being a character that was easy to empathize with. After all, he just wanted to find his child again and ensure her safety, something that was obviously easy to support. However, his treatment of trauma survivors —because let's call a spade a spade, that's what these women were after enduring the cult— was gross. I believe the author's intention was to eventually have this ice man open up to Constance and that it would show some sort of personal growth, but by the end of the book that had yet to happen and there weren't exactly any worthwhile crumbs that made me want to jump to book two to find said growth.

This leads to my next complaint regarding Benton and Constance's situationship. .

I doubt that I'll be moving on to book two. Yes, I want to know more about this cult and Forneus, but after what I just sat through I have zero trust I'll be satisfied.

Benton & Constance’s Story Sucks You Into Paris’s Dark Criminal Underground & A Demented Cult Encampment Near The Alps! There Is Gruesome Violence, So It Is Not For The Faint Of Heart. Fans Of The Silence Of The Lambs Might Appreciate Some Aspects Of This Story.

Trigger warning: contains gruesome violence, drug use, and captivity.

The story opens in Paris, probably in early September.

The Cult is a sophisticated and powerful criminal organization that has a broad reach in France. They deal acid. They took over an enormous camp near the alps, far from civilization, which has become a sort of headquarters from which they can worship as they please. Their workers are the Malevolent - zombie-like men who stand guard in cattle skull helmets. There are twelve demons in the encampment; each has his own angel. The angels are believed to provide a path to redemption. Through their forgiveness, the demons believe they will become men once again. Their goal is to eventually ascend to heaven with their angel. Forneus is one such demon. He believes that in Constance, he has found his long-awaited angel.

Benton is desperate to find his daughter, Claire. She went missing with her mother, Beatrice, but the police have been no help at all. He runs a successful contracting business in Paris which has fallen to neglect since Claire’s disappearance. He drinks scotch to forget as the days drag by. His brother, Bleu, tries to comfort him, but it is hopeless. Benton lives only for Claire, which is ironic because he had once taken an oath to another and had promised never to have children. He gladly left that life behind, though, when Claire was born just seven years ago. Yet as the days pass, he realizes he might need to ask for help – even if help comes with a steep price.

Constance’s life revolves around ballet. She has no family left, so ballet is everything to her. She is now the starring ballerina in her company – and her character is worshipped as an angel. When a clearly insane man begins appearing in her life, she knows instinctively that she is in real danger. She takes matters to the police, but nobody believes her story. She is gaslighted and eventually begins to question her own sanity.

Forneus’s obsession with Constance drives him to be bold, but with the authorities in his pockets, he knows there are no consequences. He desperately wants absolution for his sins – of which there are many. Constance finds herself in a strange new world, surrounded by insanity. Forneus is absolutely crazy, so she must watch her every move. Escape for her and her fellow angels seems an impossibility, but she knows better than to give up hope.

The Chasseurs are ruthless. The criminal organization makes their base in the Catacombs beneath Paris. Bartholomew sits on one of two thrones. He rules the empire and is emotionless in all he does. The Chasseurs have their fair share of enemies, but he doesn’t want to invite more. That is why Bartholomew is a man of his word, and he expects others to keep their word as well.

As the characters and organizations begin to intersect, the story builds. With so much insanity, it is impossible to predict what comes next. This book ends in a cliffhanger. It continues in book two, the Catacombs.

Wow! This book is dark. It is not a romance, although it might conceivably lead to some version of a happy ending after all is said and done. Some chemistry does begin to build, but ever so slowly. These characters are hard to crack, so opening up to feelings beyond lust really is a process. The men in this story are all sociopaths in various forms. Bartholomew, Forneus, and Benton are all bad news. As evil as Bartholomew and Forneus are, they are helpful at times, too. In comparison, though, Benton is an angel. He has a dark past that he reluctantly left behind once Claire was born, but her birth gave him a reason to climb out of the darkness that he had been living in. He still doesn’t know how to relate to others and is emotionally stunted, but his love for his daughter guides him like the north star. Although he is a sociopath, too, it is all relative, and here he proves to be the hero. But again, the same could be said of the other men to some degree. Constance’s survival thus far has really depended upon them all.

Constance is naturally empathic. She felt Benton’s pain when she first met him at the ballet; she marveled at his deep love for his daughter and his absolute desperation to find her. It is perhaps her empathy for others that helped give her such strength in captivity. The angels lacked leadership, and her bold steps began to change things at the camp, even if just a little. While others felt the hopelessness of their situation, Constance felt intuitively that giving up hope would spell their doom. Although she hoped to be rescued, she knew she must plan for an escape. She wasn’t only concerned about her own safety, though. She planned for the safety of all the angels – Claire’s in particular. She sensed the power she held over her own demon and used it when necessary. As this book closes, though, she has reason to feel guilty. She also has reason to fear.

Benton and Constance’s story sucks you into Paris’s dark criminal underground and a demented cult encampment near the alps. There is gruesome violence, so it is not for the faint of heart. Fans of The Silence of the Lambs might appreciate some aspects of this story. It is vaguely reminiscent in the sense that Jodi Foster’s character must work closely with a madman, and here Constance must learn how to navigate safely around Forneus and his obsession. But this story is more complex, involving other players. There remains a bit of mystery at this point in the series. The story is very well written. It is plot-driven. It is complex. The characters are mostly written of in the present tense, yet they feel real. They are carefully crafted and unique. The story is written in first person. The POV alternates between Constance and Benton. I rate this book five stars.

[Audible Review] The performance is poor but more to the fault of the writing than the actors, the excessive child dialogue and a severely slow talking demon were not enjoyable. The lack of French accents took a lot away from the experience, there was no atmosphere sounding so American.

As for the story, it was underwhelming on the dark/horror/thriller side. The cult part was corny and felt like the author wrote a cult based on having seen a movie or two with a cult in it. It wasn’t believable or well developed.

It offers absolutely zero spice or romance. The lead man couldn’t be more dull and unappealing. At least 70% of this book is from the POV of a babysitter/parent interacting with a 1-dimensional child. And it has so many forced metaphors they start to sound computer generated.

“Rules are meant to be broken. Vows shattered. Sins committed. Don’t assume you’re safe because they say you’re safe. There is no truth to this place, not when you’re in Hell.”

I love that this wasn’t your typical Penelope Sky book, the romance didn’t happen till the end of the book but I didn’t care,i really liked it.
soo good but that cliffhanger!!! I need book 2!!

WOW – that’s all I can say about this one – it’s a sick and twisted version of all that we love from Penelope Sky and i’m here for it. If you remember back to the Chateau series – we were in the Alps in a camp that was used to package and distribute drugs. Women were kidnapped and kept there to do the dirty work because they came at no cost- and their lives were held solely in the hands Fender and his brother.

Once they abandoned the camp, someone came in to take the land over. Someone who believed in all that was good and perfect and beautiful in the world – Angels. Because they themselves were demons. The worst form of Hell and they needed Angels for redemption. And so, the history of kidnapping women and bringing them to the camp continues, in a new form, because Forneus and his men kidnap women that they believe are angels who can help get them forgiveness for all they’ve done.

We start this story with our leading lady Constance – she’s a ballerina and she’s just finished a performance when a man, Benton, walks in – holding up a picture of another ballerina who has gone missing. We don’t know the story there – but we know that he’s in despair. This is the night that Constance’s life changes forever.

Benton’s ex-lover has been kidnapped along with his daughter Claire and he’s trying to hunt them down. No one can help him find her and while he wants to find Beatrice, he wants his daughter more. Constance has this memory in her mind when she performs the next night and discovers a man, all in black, staring at her with a smile that is so creepy that she’s scared out of her mind. She goes home and discovers him in the apartment across the way staring at her, and then when the police won’t take her seriously, we know her moment is about to come. The next night at her performance, the man is there again, with an entire team of men dressed in black, with horns on their heads. The police won’t help her so she tries to find Benton, knowing that he knows she’s not lying.

She goes to him to try to get protection and that’s not enough – she’s captured and we now have no idea what her fate will be or the fate of Beatrice and Claire.

We then learn that Benton is connected to a man from The Chateau. Bartholemew and the Chaussers. The group that tried to overthrow Fender and Magnus and destroyed the camp in entirety. He’s able to find out about The Cult and what they are doing, and where they are. Be barters to get Beatrice and Claire’s freedom, by trading distribution help for Forneus and his team. (they deal in LSD). When Benton goes to retrieve his daughter, he’s told that she’s dead and handed a bag of bones. Once they realize that they’ve been crossed, the story takes another turn.

On the inside of the camp, the women learn that the cult, the demons believe that they are truly angels who will help save them from hell. Each demon has an angel and each demon has their own method of getting forgiven for their sins. Constance has Forneus who’s the leader – and he’s not resorted to harming her in any way which is a plus, but we haven’t figured him out yet. He’s terrifying and he even gives her the pill (LSD) in the hopes that she can lead him to being saved, but that doesn’t work.

Beatrice’s demon on the other hand is dark and mean. He gets angry when she’s not able to make her true wings come out and he cuts her back open to force them to come out. He allows another demon to try to do the same with Beatrice’s young daughter and Constance comes to her defense and kills the demon that goes after her.

we watch a transfer of power and authority here – the men are afraid of the angels, but they are even more afraid of Constance. She has a knife and she’s killed a demon, and for that, they cower. She’s not afraid of them and she protects Claire in that sense because she knows that she can’t be hurt. The question now becomes how can they break out and how can they get their freedom. We know that Benton tried and failed since he believes they are dead, but the tide will turn once he knows they are alive.

The story for the back half is a roller coaster. Benton some how manages to get Beatrice and Claire free and Claire won’t leave without Constance. Beatrice is on the brink of death after being tortured some more by her demon, and yet Constance has managed to keep Claire alive, happy and protected. So Benton has no choice but to bring her with them but he wants nothing to do with her once they are back in Paris.

Forneus believes that Benton has something that’s his – Constance. And he’s not willing to give it up. He finds her in Paris, hunts her down, and scares her even more. The only safe place for Constance to go is Benton’s house but he wants nothing to do with her. We are left at a point in this story where we know that Constance means quite a bit to a lot of people, but will she mean enough to the people who can save her. We just don’t know yet

"The Cult" by Penelope Sky is a chilling journey set in the eerie landscape of The Chateau, France, far removed from the familiar territories of Buttons, Lingerie, and Skull Kings in Italy. This book is not for the faint-hearted; it's a dark and torturous tale that will keep you on edge. The story revolves around a terrifying cult that has taken over what was once Fender's Camp. With its demonic hierarchy and its army of followers dubbed the Malevolent, this cult kidnaps women they perceive as angels. Among their captives are Beatrice, Claire, and Constance - three women whose harrowing experiences within the Cult will shape their destinies. Sky's character development is top-notch. Claire's innocence shines like a beacon amidst the darkness while Benton's intense seriousness is tempered by his commendable role as a devoted father to Claire. Constance embodies strength and determination in every sense of these words. The antagonists are equally compelling with Forneus being an unhinged psychopath whose madness defies description. And then there's Amon - meeting him would be your worst nightmare come true.

The narrative is grippingly intense; each page turned unveils another layer of the Cult's disturbing practices. The unpredictability keeps you eager to read on, constantly wondering what comes next. While it doesn't end on a cliffhanger per se, it leaves you with an irrefutable sense that something insanely unexpected awaits in the next installment. In my opinion, "The Cult" by Penelope Sky is an excellent read - but be warned: these last few books have delved into darker territories than before. I am eagerly waiting for the audiobook version of book 2 to continue this thrilling saga! You simply can't go wrong with a Penelope Sky novel; she never fails to deliver an unforgettable reading experience.

I will say that this was definitely different from the author previous book. This book took some time to get used to. I couldn't make head or tails about the cult leader Forneus, and why his followers are just following his lead. Even after I finishing the book things still didn't make sense to me I'm still kinda confused. I need more backstory as to how and why they came to be and what's their purposes. Also what's the deal with the LSD. I will say this was definitely a page-turner that played with my emotions poor Constance who had to constantly hold it together when all she wanted to do was breakdown. Having a be strong to protected Claire. Overall a intriguing in interesting read can't wait to see how the next book is going to play out. As always my reviews are totally voluntarily and no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are completely my own.

If this book hadn’t told me it was set in France I would have had no idea. There weren’t a lot of French references or cultural standouts for me. The cult seemed kind of like the author watched a made for tv crime show where a weird cult had been made up. It just didn’t feel realistic to me. The visuals are creepy and I still wanted to know where the story went. Overall it was an okay book but I wish it had given me more. It seemed long for what it was. Would still recommend.

Loved reading the engaging, exciting, captivating, and amazing story. When Constance is kidnapped, she can't believe the bizarre cult she finds herself in. A mother, Beatrice, and her daughter, Claire, are also both trapped and Constance discovers a protectiveness toward the young girl, Claire. The women captured are thought to be angels and each angel has her own evil demon man. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, full of suspense and mystery, and riveting story engaging the reader from the first page of the story until the last page of the story full of anticipation for the next story in the series. Can't wait to read the next story in the Cult series by the incredibly phenomenal author, Penelope Sky!

Really enjoyed this read. It’s more plot heavy than the, so if you are looking for smut this might not be a book for you.
I found the plot very interesting and was super mesmerized by the visuals and the vibe of it. The heroine is a total badass and I loved that about her- no whining at all- she’s a total fighter. Benton is so grumpy and I was eating it up 🤣

I do wish some parts went a further, deeper and darker. This is one of those rarer readers where I wish it was longer to give us more content.

Out with the old and in with the new - but this time the danger gets a little to close. Penelope Sky once again keep the readers on the edge of their seats while at the same time creating a world of dark suspense that shines brighter than the rest. Benton and Constance are thrown together out of guilt and appreciation - but there is a fine line between good and evil. I cannot wait to see where this story goes next.
