JENNIFER writes stories that explore the human experience — searching for clarity in the chaos, meaning in the unexpected, and connection through the characters we come to love. Her work spans from lush fantasy romance to quirky speculative fiction, all rooted in emotional truth, hidden layers, and a touch of the unexpected. Whether she’s exploring love, death, or the weird magic in between, she’s here for readers who crave stories that surprise, resonate, and stay with you long after the final page.
When she’s not writing, you might find her whipping together her favorite dark chocolate mousse, lost in the minutia of one of her excel spreadsheets, or power walking a beach in front of her house in the Turks and Caicos.
If you like fantasy stories about powers, mysterious creatures, adventures and prophecies, this book is for you.
In this world, most people have lost their powers as they were banished. One of the realms think that Vera, who has a little more powers than others, will save them.
To do so, they need an old relic. They need Vera to steal it. When she realizes she was just a tool, things get messy...
I truly enjoyed the female characters of this book. They are strong and the male characters support them and make great sidekicks. They are not there to steal their place of leaders.
There is a short scene of sexual assault but it serves the story, it is not presented as something insignificant and the feelings of the character are not diminished. The male characters believe her when they learn about it.
The different creatures are interesting and can be both allies and enemies. Knowing how to distinguish them is part of the plot, even more so when you know that they too have been banished
I think it's the kind of book that requires concentration at first to be sure to understand the different regents, realms and powers at stake.
I had been following the author on Instagram for a while and loved seeing the development of this story! So when Jennifer put out a call for ARC readers I enthusiastically said yes!
Review in 10-ish words: Fantasy adventure for days. Kick ass characters in a whole new world. 3.5/5
In this book, I am: For sure I want to be Asha! I really loved her sass, and can't wait to see more of her in book two.
Synopsis: The Skyborn have been banished. Their powers have suffered and the regents may not agree about everything, but they do stand united in one goal; to return to their homeland.
The ember is the key to their return, and Vera is the one person who can get it back. Throw in some unlikely allies and a deadly forest in the middle of the continent and we have ourselves an adventurous fantasy read. (I appreciate the author has included CW in the synopsis and encourage you to check these out before reading).
My thoughts: If you love a fast paced fantasy book then this is the one for you. The world and the lore is super interesting, and like any unique fantasy read you may need a minute to get your head around who's who and what's what- to me that's half the fun.
I loved the main character! I loved her internal struggles especially around family, identity and purpose. Like any MC she made decisions I potentially disagreed with and had me torn. I love a character who is not perfect and I love that she was 'the chosen one' but it wasn't as clear cut/tropey as like other stories I have read.
The main ensemble of characters are well developed and this makes for some complex relationships within the story. This isn't a particular romantic/spicy read though there are a few scenes sprinkled through! The focus is definitely kept on fantasy/adventure and even to some extent politics so if you're into this then you'll have a ball!
The story itself was fast paced. I felt like things happened very quickly and at times I wish I had had more opportunity for relationships to develop more and to get my head around some of the backstory a little. I did find that the world was vividly painted and I could see the story happening in my head quite clearly.
The ending has me keen as a bean for book two! I can't wait to see what happens next.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a complementary copy in exchange for an honest review!
This book is definitely one of my top 15 reads of this year. A beautiful, dark yet hopeful fantasy with world building so beautiful I could cry and you bet I did. A protagonist that I am sure has become my girl crush everyday at this point. A sweet little godfly that is just so precious I can't even!! And a compelling story that won't let you put the book down midway. An amazing start to Skyborne series, Realm of the banished definitely is a very promising debut novel by Jennifer. More power to you, girl!
Wow. This book was so good! I got it as an ARC from the author, (which I am very grateful for). It’s set in a beautiful and intricate fantasy world that was so interesting with such and incredible magic system and complex array of creatures. I think that it’s perfect for fans of Red Queen because there is a Maven like villain and Crescent City because they’re is an adorable little creature who reminds me of Lehabah. I really like how the book gave you an idea of what each character’s personality is like despite the fact that it’s only from one character’s POV. I really liked the friendships and other relationships in this book. The reason I gave this books four stars because the beginning was a bit confusing and there was one very specific part of the book that I found… icky. Otherwise I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to find out what happens next in the sequel!
NOTE FROM THE FUTURE (AFTER REVIEW WAS POSTED): Hello! Wanted to update the author is super sweet (sent me a message and everything, which is honestly super touching, got me emotional gotta be honest) and that there will be TW for future readers in the description to book sellers and such. I wanted to point that out since it is amazing news and very lovely of her to do so (shows what an amazing person she is)! I wanted to publicly point it out since it is a wonderful thing and wanted to also thank her (you) publicly. Wish more people in the author realm (puns!) were like you 👏🥰. Thanks from the bottom of my heart 💜!
Disclaimer: I received an ARC, which thank you, but it in no way affects my review. My thoughts are my own.
TW: sexual assault (which is not mentioned anywhere at the beginning or end of the ARC it is short and validated by the male characters in the book when adressed, don't be me and read it at night)
This was okay, nothing I have never read before and Nayla was annoying to me. She kept making choices, especially towards the end, that made less and less sense to me. I thought that as the book progressed it would have been better and better choices as she learns more. The opposite happened. At least in my eyes.
A lot of information is also thrown at you about the politics in such a short book, had it been longer it may have felt different. It felt a lot like info dumping in certain parts or rather throwing words around that mean nothing because they are invented for the fantasy world (or giving a two - three sentences of explanation that with all of the information some will get lost at the speed it is being given). It was hard to keep track of things, and I say this as a high fantasy reader who loves political and character driven books. I really enjoyed Conall, but we see a medium amount of them and of him overall even though he's the most interesting in my opinion. Malik was also nice to read, he was just that character with that banter and those sentences that made you smirk and he is just amazing.
The magic is interesting as it is lost when people are banished so there is this whole belief that because our MC has more powers than others she will save them somehow. I liked parts of it and some were boring to me because I kept having to re-read due to the fact that so much information is thrown at us at such a speed. The women characters are strong and opiniated which I really liked (YAY women).
--PSA--
should not be the job of the reviewer to put TW
--
Anyhow, there is a lot of good that was made in this book, the world is interesting as a whole and I think there is a lot of potential in this story and with this author. It is her debut novel and I think there is a lot that could happen in the next one that will make this great. Unfortunately this one was just alright for me.
The first half of the book stood at a 2 - 2.5 star, slow and too much information given at once, while the second half was a 3 star, good but not amazing with a somewhat better pacing. Not a book I will remember the details of in a couple of days or weeks unfortunately.
Overall 3/5 stars.
Won't pick up the sequel, but maybe a future book by her.
Realm of the Banished is a well written, fast paced fantasy. The realm consists of six territories with an intimidating and deadly middle section known as the Swath. The world building is excellent. Creating a world is difficult but creating one that has been banished from another is even more so. The ember and every territory's desire to keep this connection to their past was really fascinating! I really enjoyed learning about the Crossover and the history of how the Skyborne settled in the new realm. I also enjoyed the glimpses of Idia. I'm excited to see the world they left behind explored further in the next book. The characters were well developed. Vera is a strong female lead who endures so much but still has an incredible resolve. She does makes some questionable decisions. I loved her disbelief regarding being the Chosen one. She attempts to rationalize it but at the same time desires the power. Meethra was a unique and loveable sidekick. I was intrigued by Malik from the prologue. He has such a dynamic personality. Uden and the monsters were terrifying! The first scene in the Swath was so intense. The sibling bond between Vera and Conall was amazing! I loved how close they were even after several major revelations. This book has several shocking twists. Although I picked up on several hints, I was not expecting the biggest revelation. It certainly explained a lot about what I had read and kept me wanting more! There is very little romance in this book and it was not what I expected. My "ship" crashed and burned so that was disappointing for me. Readers should go into this one simply for a well told fantasy with lots of adventure. I will read the next one!
Trigger Warnings: This book contains sexual assault and violence that may be difficult for some readers.

I’m one of those people that would rather listen to an audio book about business or psychology, but Realm of the Banished was one I actually enjoyed sitting down and reading every page!
It was only after reading other reviews did I understand one of my favorite elements of this book, “world building”. The way the different territories are described and how authentically they encompass the characters who live there. This adventure has a lot of characters which I thought would be hard to keep track of, but they’re all so unique and have specific personalities; they each contribute something crucial to the MCs journey.
Now… the MC. Where do I start 😂 In books/movies I’ve seen before, the MC is someone who I relate to on an outwardly level. However, *THIS* MC is someone who I relate to on a whole other ‘realm’ (see what I did there 😉). She wasn’t written in a way where we would agree with everything she did, she is truly an individual; with her own set of issues, she makes decisions that she decides - not what us readers would wish she’d do. She feels more real than any other character I’ve ever read - this makes me like her regardless of if we see eye to eye on everything.
This book is a thinker and you have to stay sharp for all the Easter eggs hidden in the first couple chapters. All will be revealed in due time, 🦗… I think the # of plot twists scattered throughout the book made it was a blast to read - I kept going, “What the h3ll? I thought ‘X’ but now ‘Y’?!?! Ahhh! I didn’t see that coming! I LOVE THIS STORY!”
This isn’t a lazy or mindless read - it’s fun, exciting, really engaging, thoughtful and the ending cliffhanger left me going to the authors website to see when book 2 in this series would be out!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Note: I received and ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
Or at least hints of such things. Vera, or is it Nayla… is the Regent of Eastdow’s only daughter, and one of the Skyborne. Her powers are more than the typical Skyborne and there are even rumors that she may be the “chosen one” of prophesy. She knows it isn't true.
A citizen of the Realm of the Banished, and born into a ruling family of one of the six Provences oath sworn to the Covenant. Each Provence and Regent sworn to pass the sacred ember from one to the other in an endless cycle until the Seer's prophesied end-times when the Skyborne’s banishment from Idia can be revoked with its power in the chosen one's hands. A millennium has passed and that time is now and some Regents are more determined then others to control the ember’s power. The intrigue has begun.
Twists and turns and mixed bloodlines rule in this awesome start to a Fantasy series sure to delight. Characters with real life needs and desires pull the story here and there and keep you reading to discover the next surprise development. Rich in fantasy world vibe mixed with a little ‘heat’ to keep readers of any sexual persuasion interested. But that's just a side note to the real show. It’s one of those books where if its midnight and you are at 85% complete, you keep turning the pages. I know.
Realm of the Banished is an intriguing new adult fantasy novel that kept me hooked ✨
The story follows Vera, a kickass protagonist who was prophesized to be the chosen one but has since been deemed expendable. Until she takes her destiny into her own hands🔥🗡
The storyworld is very well-thought-out and Vera’s magic was intriguing from the start. I could picture everything vividly. Because the world is quite detailed, it was a bit hard to follow everything at first. But once I was in, I was in it to stay for sure 💫
I'd say this is one of the shorter fantasy novels I’ve read recently but there are a lot of twists and turns packed into this one. I appreciate a good surprise and it definitely delivered✨
I also really liked the main characters and how their relationships shifted throughout the story. There was a complexity there that made me want to see more. Although I did enjoy being in Vera’s head, I did get a bit annoyed with her at some points. But that’s what keeps it interesting!
Although the relationships were great, there was not that much romance. There were hints and tension and again, complex relations - which I loved 😍 – but I love romance so I was craving more I guess you could say haha 💕
Then again, there’s plenty of room for more of that in the next one - I hope, I definitely have a ship 😏 The ending was great and left me wanting more of everything for sure.
Realm of the Banished is Jennifer M. Waldrop's debut novel and she’s done an amazing job with it.
I first want to say Congratulations to Jennifer Waldrop on her Novel and thank you for allowing me to have an advanced copy.
This story was very creative and unique with a few surprises through out that will keep you on your toes. The world building was very detailed to where I could picture myself walking in the different realms. The characters were all portrayed well and created a closeness feel to a few of them. My favorite character was Malik who could find humor while being in danger but also had a side that was protective to the ones he cared about. The main character, Nayla in the beginning I liked but as it went on and the decisions she made, made me want to knock her across the head. She had a horrible judge of character and at times questioned her motives. I wished Conall was more in the book and continually rooted for him. I kept waiting for some spice between Nayla and Conall.
Meethera the godfly, absolutely loved her!
I'm excited for the next book and hoping to find out more about the realms as well as the ember and what power it truly holds.
This was an interesting start to a promising series! I very much enjoyed the cast of characters being adults rather than teenagers like we see in many of these types of books. Of course they also live longer but that’s beside the point. The characters are my age or older - and I appreciate that.
The beginning of this book was slow. I understand why as there was a lot of backstory that was important and needed to be included. It became quicker paced until the ending when it was definitely fast paced and hard to put down. I’m definitely interested to see what happens next - and I’m glad that I have the second book as well so I can continue!
Shout out to the author for a copy of this one! I definitely enjoyed it and I’m invested!
I have been following the author on Instagram and enjoyed seeing her journey through the writing/publishing process. When she announced she was looking for ARC readers, I jumped at the opportunity and am so thankful I was given the chance to read this book early.
I am a total sucker for all things fantasy but especially ones that are in the New Adult genre. This new series does not disappoint! I loved the pacing, world building and character development—not to mention the surprise twists and turns. I also felt this story had a unique take on magic systems, which is always appreciated. Sometimes, I admit I wish the pacing could have slowed down while I was catching up with the lore but ultimately didn’t feel it detracted from the story.
I will absolutely be picking up book two when it is released!
First the cover caught my eye. Then the summary. And also looking for arc readers. I was on top of that! And boy was I glad I did!
I gave this book 4 stars. I was on a stand still with a 3.5. But man did it turn around on me. I loved all the characters. The storyline for awhile caught me off guard for a bit. But then got right on track with the action and the magic!
The author, as I was reading, seems very intelligent. I was blown away by how well written it was!
I loved the world and characters that Jennifer Waldrop created. I love the concepts and beings, My favorite is Malik because he's cheeky. The story is very intense, well-written and flows very nicely. I don't want to give anything away about this book so I leave my review at that.
This is by far one of my favorite books this year, Jennifer Waldrop did such a phenomenal job with this book and I eagerly await book 2! Thank you for letting me read an ARC of Realm of the Banished.
TW/CW: Cutting, almost rape, descriptive sexual content (consensual), violence.
I read this book for the arc readings of the second books release. Which any reason to get a free book or two I’m alway on board with 😂 (Disclaimer I have had a lot of things happen when I was supposed to be reading these books so I didn’t finish them on time for the release date of book 2)
Trigger warnings for the book: There is some fowl language Attempted rape Consentual sex (between man and women and another time woman and woman) Incest (it isn’t known at the time) Fantasy violence and killing
This book is full of twists and turns while you are discovering the wonders and horrors of the Realm of the banished. I gave it three stars because the story is great but I think it needed more time in the editing/finalizing aspect of writing this book. There were just a few confusing parts. Like when Malik and seeley’s relationship was revealed I thought there was a page or two missing because there was no. “Yeah we’re in a relationship” kind of thing just oh you two look comfortable around each other you must be in a relationship. There was also a lot of typos and the writing at some points reminded me of how teens write in fan-fiction. Specifically some of the dialogue and there were times when the author assumed the reader knew a lot more about the story when they really didn’t know much.
At the end when they were at the inn preparing to leave to Idia I was a bit surprised when Nayla decided it was a good idea to bring a stranger they had just met along with them to an unknown realm. It I were going on a crazy adventure like that I would want to take the people I know and trust the most. Maybe Nayla saw something in Asha that I haven’t yet and she will become a vital part of the group I’m not sure I’m excited to see more of Asha though!
Other than these few things the book is great. I always say as long as I’m entertained love the book. The story is great I just mentioned these things because I am an arc reader and I felt the need to be 100% honest about all aspects of reading this book.
So to break it down a bit more The story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The writing:⭐️⭐️ The editing:⭐️⭐️
My favorite character has to be Malik I love how dark humored he is and just how grounded he seems.
I love this story and I’m so excited to see where it goes in book 2 Realm of the Skyborne!
Ps even more excited to finally meet Rhijn outside of the dream realm!

Realm of the Banished is a young adult paranormal/fantasy mystery by author Jennifer M. Waldrop. This book had such an interesting premise that I couldn't wait to dive into it. Part, fantasy/paranormal, part quest, part mystery and a whole lot of adventure. Yes, please...sign me up! And I have to say, I really enjoyed the adventure Realm of the Banished took me on. I loved the characters and once I picked up this book, I was easily able to finish it in one sitting because I was totally engrossed in the story.
In Realm of the Banished, we meet our main character Vera. What I loved most about her was her fierce sense of independence. She really is a strong young woman, who though I didn't agree with her choices from time to time, I appreciated that she always owned her decisions. She is a skyborne, but she has some strange abilities that most skybornes do not possess. Because of her special abilities she is sent out to retrieve an artifact, which would allow her people to end their long banishment from the realm. That is really only the starting point of her quest and along the way she meets all kinds of characters. I really enjoyed the cast of characters in this story and I can't wait to get to know them all a little better in the next book. Realm of the Banished clipped along at a fairly fast pace, which I loved, but it didn't really allow me to get to know the characters in the level of depth that I typically enjoy. I'm hoping that is fleshed out a little in the next book.
Bottom line: If you are a fan of the chosen one trope and you love a good adventure in your fantasy books, then Realm of the Banished is a fantastic book for you to check out. This was a fast paced read, and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
“Ream of the Banished (Skyborne Series, Book One)” is about a war of two sects in the realm of Idia. The two sects (six Sol Ros houses united against the one sect, known as the Dar Kepler) engage in battle and the losing sect is banished to another realm. This losing sect sets up territories and establishes new regents from the surviving members and drafts a new covenant. All along believing that someday they will return to Idia with the help of an element stone; which has unknown mythical magic powers wield by someone able to communicate with the stone’s powers.
I have always been a fan of paranormal books; so I was intrigued by the story and I also liked the cover. The book started out confusing for me because I didn’t get a clear view of who the protagonist was and started rooting for someone who was not mentioned again after the first few chapters. This put me off right away , but the author got me back with a plot twist I didn’t see coming.
I stayed with the book because there were more twists to come. And although one of my favorite characters was not the love interest (a plot twist which dashed my hopes) I still enjoyed the book.
I recommend reading this story because of the emotional roller coaster ride of plot twists and the mystery of the Skybornes. Although I didn’t not give the book the highest rating (because the author needs to work on the transition between chapters and character development and resolution); I still think reading this book is worth the time and effort. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.
Jennifer M. Waldrop set up a rich story that was action packed, full of unique magic, and a great cast of characters. The pacing in this one is a bit faster than I normally like, as I like a bit of more world building. Somehow, even with the mad-dash pacing, there was still well constructed character development, even if the characters did develop in to knuckleheads who make questionable choices...still well done development. Now, there is world building and it is cool (probably why I want more of it!). Not only how detailed the territories alone were but also the people who inhabited those territories.
If you're looking for an "excuse me, WHAT!?!” read, this is it.
I devoured this book! 😍The plot was fast paced and it flowed easily meaning I was never bored, I was so intrigued as to what will happen, the twists were well placed in the story and I was not expecting them at all! I could picture everything that was described and I loved the main character, she is independent, strong and clever which was a pleasure to read! I would have liked to see her relationships with other characters, especially Conall and Malik, develop more but I guess we will see that in book 2 which I am so eager to get reading, thank you Jennifer for sending me an arc copy of this, I loved it and highly recommend for a new modern fantasy story.
First, I love Vera. Others might see her as an expendable tool, but she's strong, smart, and not easy to push aside. The world is richly developed, and Waldrop does as an amazing job of bringing it to life. There were some scenes that were a little difficult to read, but they fit in with the story, and I would recommend readers heed the content warning. The pacing was perfect, and there was enough tension you just couldn't help but keep turning pages. Overall, this was an engaging story, and I hope we get to explore more of the world in the next book!
This book has everything you need in a fantasy world! It has the complex history, the magic systems, the fun characters, the villains, world traveling, many types creatures, and many twists and turns!
I loved being in Nayla’s head, she was the most interesting and most complex character of them all, in my opinion. She herself kept the story interesting and brought some of the surprises herself.
In the beginning, the magic system and complexity of relationships between characters was a bit confusing and a bit much. But once I understood what was going on and who was who, then I was totally hooked into the story.
I haven't enjoyed a fantasy book from a new author this much in a long time. Realm of the Banished is great if you like adult epic fantasy with a lot of cool worldbuilding that doesn't hold your hand.
I say "adult" because there are a couple of steamy scenes and a bit of strong language, but it's not too much in my opinion. Trigger warning, there is a scene where one character almost assaults another character but doesn't actually do it, but it was handled well, I just felt like it's worth mentioning since it could trigger some readers who are more sensitive than me.
The story is pretty interesting, with a lot of twists and honestly a few moments where the characters make really stupid decisions. But what really grabbed me is the worldbuilding. There's some really interesting ideas here, where the whole race of people were banished from their home world and have an uneasy alliance while they try to get back. I can't go too much more into it without spoilers, but I'll say the magic and science in this world are really interesting and I can't wait to read the next book to see where this story is headed.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Great world building and interesting characters that I quickly grew to like made this a hard to put down book. The story was original and I look forward to more
The first chapter had me confused but it straightened out after that. Vera started out as a minor character and then became the story.
Her adventures and slowing evolving back story for her and the Realm were helpful as they went along.
I liked the entire story and it really set up the next book. Not a cliffhanger but a good lead-in for the future. The author has set herself up to write a prequel to tell the full back story. Worth the read and I hope it gets the recognition that it is worth. 👍👏👌😘
